The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the mental health of the global population. This study aimed to assess the acute and persistent symptoms of depression, as well as factors related to their manifestation, through a longitudinal study design. A total of 1,492 community-dwelling adults from an online public panel across three regions were evaluated at baseline, with 908 adults (60.9%) followed up after six months. Depression symptoms were evaluated using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Participants also completed self-administered questionnaires on sociodemographic information, psychosocial experiences related to COVID-19, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Korean version of the Gratitude Questionnaire (K-GQ-6).The prevalence of acute and persistent depression symptoms was 8.4% and 12.0%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified changes in predictors of depression over time, with younger age and self-isolation experience found to be associated with acute depression. Factors such as underlying mental illness, eating and sleeping disturbances, loneliness, and COVID-19-related stress emerged as significant risk factors for persistent depression. A disposition toward gratitude was identified as a protective factor for persistent depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that during any long-term pandemic crisis such as COVID-19, timely support and attention are essential for vulnerable populations, including young people and individuals with mental health conditions, to prevent depression. Specifically, promoting daily routines such as regular eating and sleeping patterns, and managing COVID-19-related stress may be critical in preventing persistent depression. Additionally, psychological support that reduces loneliness and fosters gratitude may help mitigate depression risk.

Background:
This study evaluated the practicability of the suicide rate reduction target set by the current national suicide prevention policy in Korea, the fifth Master Plan for Suicide Prevention (2023–2027). This policy aims to lower the suicide rate from 26/100,000 in 2021 to 18.2/100,000 by 2027.
Methods:
We utilized monthly suicide statistics data from 2011 onwards. Using Bayesian regression and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models, we conducted interrupted time series analyses to estimate the effect of the previous policy, the National Action Plan for Suicide Prevention (2018–2022), on suicide rates. We assumed this as the additional suicide reduction expected from the current policy. We generated point predictions and simulations for suicide rates from 2023 to 2027 using Bayesian regression and ARIMA models.
Results:
The interrupted time series analyses did not reveal a significant reduction in suicides attributable to the previous policy. Point predictions from the two models indicated that the suicide rate would remain approximately 24/100,000 in 2027. Almost all of the simulations of the 2027 suicide rate did not meet the policy target of 18.2/100,000.
Conclusion
The findings suggest that the Korean government’s suicide rate reduction target for 2027 is likely unattainable based on current trends and the limited effectiveness of previous policies. The objectives of suicide prevention policies should be evidence-based, attainable, and accountable.

Objective:
This study aimed to explore treatment outcomes and pharmacological treatment intensities across major depressive disorder (MDD) subtypes over a 24-month period in a naturalistic clinical setting.
Methods:
A total of 1,079 MDD patients were classified into melancholic (n = 182; 16.9%), atypical (n = 68; 6.3%), and unspecified (n = 829; 76.8%) subtypes and followed in a longitudinal cohort study. Treatment intensity and outcomes, including 12-week and 12-month remission and 24-month relapse rates, were measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale.
Results:
There were no significant differences in remission or relapse rates across subtypes at 12 weeks, 12 months, or 24 months. However, melancholic and atypical subtypes received more intensive pharmacological treatments compared to the unspecified subtype, particularly during the initial 12-week treatment phase. This increased treatment intensity was associated with equivalent outcomes across subtypes.
Conclusion
Despite similar long-term outcomes across MDD subtypes, variations in treatment intensity were crucial for achieving these results. Our findings suggest that tailoring treatment plans according to depressive subtype severity and characteristics is essential for effective management. Future research should investigate the genetic and biomolecular bases of these subtypes to further optimize treatment strategies.

Objective:
Increased fast food consumption can have adverse effects on health and well-being among adolescents, posing a significant public health concern. The school closures due to the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have led to changes in eating patterns and disrupted a balance diet among adolescents. This study explored the factors associated with fast food consumption among adolescents during school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods:
A total of 1,710 middle and high school students in Gwangju, South Korea participated in a cross-sectional survey. The self-administered questionnaire included items assessing dietary intake, physical activity, sleep, media use, and sociodemographic information. The Patient Health Questonnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and three item version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale were also administered. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with increased fast food consumption.
Results:
Approximately 34.6% of the surveyed adolescents reported increased fast food consumption during school closures, as well as increased sleep duration, increased sedentary behaviors including watching TV and using the internet, and reduced physical activity. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that fast food consumption during school closures was associated with irregular patterns of main meals and sleep, decreased physical activity, increased internet use, and a lack of daytime adult supervision.
Conclusion
Our results highlight the need for dietary and lifestyle monitoring and guidelines to promote health among adolescents, especially during school closures. In conclusion, nutrition intervention programs aiming to limit fast food consumption and enhance healthy dietary habits among adolescents during long-term school closures are warranted.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2024;63(4):237-245
Objectives:
This study examined the shifts in the suicide trends in Korea during the initial phase of the Fifth Master Plan for Suicide Prevention, using interrupted time series analyses.
Methods:
Interrupted time series analyses were performed using the monthly suicide data from January 2011 to April 2024. Quasi-Poisson regression models were applied to evaluate the changes in the level and slope of the suicide trend before and after policy implementation. The Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Prophet models were used to compare the actual and predicted counterfactual numbers of suicides during the policy period.
Results:
The quasi-Poisson regression model revealed a significant change in the trend of suicides among men, with an increasing slope during the policy period. For total suicides, the ARIMA and Prophet models suggested that the actual number of suicides was significantly higher than the counterfactual number during the policy period, with excess suicides averaging between 113 and 150 per month. The actual number of suicides among men was significantly higher than the counterfactual number during the policy period, with excess suicides averaging between 86 and 92 per month. No significant changes in the suicide trends among women were observed.
Conclusion
These findings suggest that the initial effects of the Fifth Master Plan for Suicide Prevention were inadequate to curb the rising suicide trends, particularly among men. This study underscores the need for timely policy responses to reverse the current increasing trend in suicides, with particular focus on the male population.

Journal of the Korean Society of Biological Therapies in Psychiatry 2024;30(3):61-68
Objectives:
This study was performed to identify factors associated with self-perceived depression among Korean adolescents during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Methods:
A total of 1,710 middle and high school students (54.7% boys, 45.3% girls) participated in a cross-sectional survey. The self-administered questionnaire included items assessing the changes in perceived depression and daily life patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other questionnaires included sociodemographic data, three item version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Gratitude Questionnaire-6, and Big Five Inventory-10. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with increased perceived depression during COVID-19 pandemic.
Results:
The prevalence rate of perceived depression was 18.4%. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that high loneliness, neuroticism, decreased social relationships, increased familial conflict, increased internet using time, irregular meal pattern, and high perceived academic stress were significantly associated with perceived depression.
Conclusions
Our findings suggest that interventions aimed at coping with stress and regulate perceived depression due to sudden life style changes are necessary for adolescents, as such a global situation like COVID-19 pandemic could be prolonged or repeated.
