Background: In August 2021, three female semiconductor workers applied for occupational disease compensation due to congenital diseases diagnosed in their children: patient A (immunoglobulin A nephropathy, vesicoureteral reflux, renal agenesis), patient B (renal agenesis, esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula), and patient C (congenital megacolon). The Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI) initially assessed the relatedness of these conditions to occupational exposure as low. However, the Occupational Disease Adjudication Committee of the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service (KWCWS) overturned this assessment, officially recognizing these cases as occupational diseases in March 2024—the first such recognition in South Korea.Case presentation: The mother of Patient A worked in optical processes for 9 years, the mother of patient B worked in diffusion processes for 10 years, and the mother of patient C worked in molding and inspection processes for 7 years. Their jobs involved exposure to benzene, organic solvents, pyrolysis products, ionizing radiation, and X-rays. All three women continued working during pregnancy, and none had a family history of related illnesses. Conclusions OSHRI estimated that the occupational exposure levels of these workers were low and noted insufficient reproductive research focused on congenital anomalies in the Korean semiconductor industry before 2010. However, KWCWS cited frequent miscarriages among female semiconductor workers as indirect evidence of an increased risk of congenital anomalies. KWCWS ultimately concluded that substantial evidence supports an association between occupational exposure and congenital diseases in the children of female semiconductor workers. This case series highlights a landmark recognition of occupational disease related to congenital anomalies in the semiconductor industry, emphasizing the need for further reproductive health research and improved worker protections.

Background: The aims of this study are to examine how occupation-related data and information for health (ODH) are collected and managed from census-based surveys and potential occupational illness and injuries (POIS) statistics, and to propose a national strategy for the systematic collection, analysis, and management of ODH by building on the Korean Standard Classification of Occupation (KSCO) and using a job exposure matrix (JEM). Methods: The status of the collection and management of ODH registered as national statistics, drawn not only from the census-based general population and workforce, but also from POIS statistics was reviewed and evaluated. Results: ODH from the Republic of Korea's Census of Population and Labor Force are collected and classified according to the KSCO. In contrast, national statistics on POIS are not systematically collected for KSCO coding, reflecting the lack of an KSCO and related guidelines on how to collect ODH. Key frameworks for the construction of both an KSCO and a reference JEM for public health surveillance are proposed. Conclusions Further research is needed to develop a national system for collecting and managing ODH, which will ultimately contribute to the use of a national KSCO and the construction of JEM for public health surveillance.

Background: Lead, which is widely used in various industrial settings, is a major health hazard for manufacturing workers. Therefore, control of lead exposure has been implemented in an effort to prevent lead-related health problems. In this study, our aim was to evaluate temporal trends in occupational lead exposure in Korean lead workers using data from monitoring of workplace exposure. Methods: A nationwide work environment monitoring database, data from a work environment monitoring institution, and data extracted from a review paper were utilized. Different versions of standard industrial classification codes were aligned with the 10th Korean Standard Industrial Classification, which is generally consistent with the 4th revision of the International Standard Industrial Classification. The multiple data sources were combined and temporal trends over the period from 1994–2021 were estimated. In addition, separate estimation of temporal trends in the storage battery manufacturing industry over the period from 1987–2021 was also performed. Results: A total of 444,296 personal airborne lead measurements were used for the estimation process. The temporal trends in occupational exposure to lead declined by −6% annually over the study period. In particular, levels of lead exposure in the storage battery manufacturing industry showed a steeper decline of −12% annually. Conclusions Findings of our study showed that occupational exposure to lead declined over the period from 1994 to 2021 in Korea. However, adverse effects of exposure to lead on health should be regarded with caution. The results will be useful in conduct of epidemiological studies examining lead-related effects on health.
