1.Eradication of Aspiculuris tetraptera in various immunodeficient mouse models using ivermectin: a case report

Background:
Despite advancements in laboratory animal facility management, pinworm infections remain a persistent issue in immunodeficient mouse colonies. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are crucial to mitigating potential scientific and economic consequences. Effective control requires both the administration of anthelmintic agents and rigorous environmental decontamination. However, the safety and efficacy of these treatments in genetically modified mouse models remains uncertain.Case presentation Aspiculuris tetraptera infestation was identified in multiple immunodeficient mouse models housed in a laboratory facility. Diagnosis was confirmed through fecal flotation for egg detection and necropsy for adult worm examination in the large intestines. Mice received three subcutaneous ivermectin injections at two-week intervals, coupled with environmental decontamination using ivermectin spray for four consecutive weeks. Following treatment, all colonies tested negative for A. tetraptera without any mortality.
Conclusions
A combination of subcutaneous ivermectin injection and environmental spray application effectively eradicated A. tetraptera infestation in immunodeficient mouse colonies. The treatment protocol led to the complete elimination of eggs and adult worms, offering a practical strategy for managing pinworm infections in genetically modified mouse models. Limitations include the small sample size, and the lack of a comprehensive evaluation of physiological and metabolic safety in immunodeficient mice. Further validation will be required to confirm the broader applicability of this approach.
2.Thermal modulation and airflow distribution determine hair drying efficiency, moisture behavior in human hair in Republic of Korea: an ex vivo study

Background:
Hair drying is a routine cosmetic practice; however, excessive heat exposure and non-uniform airflow can compromise cuticle integrity, degrade hair sensory properties, and induce scalp discomfort. This study aimed to (i) identify a practical thermal window that minimizes perturbation of hair fiber surface and quantify late-stage thermal amplification during the drying process using percentage-based analysis.
Methods:
Temperature-dependent hair fiber surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after controlled exposure to 41°C, 60°C, 80°C, and 90°C using virgin and chemically damaged hair. The drying efficacy was assessed using the surface and internal moisture indices under airflow shaping (test) and uniform airflow (control) conditions. Hair fluttering (maximum angular displacement) was evaluated before and after drying under warm-cool alternating (60°C-80°C) versus constant hot airflow (80°C).
Results:
SEM revealed temperature-dependent cuticle disruption, with markedly greater surface perturbation at 90°C than at 80°C. Infrared thermography demonstrated pronounced late-stage thermal amplification: at 150 seconds, the surface temperature increased by 295% (from 24.2°C to 72.0°C) at 90°C, compared with 207% (from 24.2°C to 50.7°C) at 80°C. Airflow shaping promoted preferential surface moisture removal (–13.6%) while limiting internal dehydration (–9.4%), whereas the control condition exhibited minimal surface drying (–4.6%) but substantial internal moisture loss (–22.2%). Warm-cool modulation increased hair fluttering by +11.0%, whereas constant hot airflow reduced it (–3.7%).
Conclusion
These findings indicate that spatial and temporal control of heat delivery represents a clinically relevant design strategy beyond the nominal temperature specification in hair-drying devices.
3.Risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 transmission during a movie theater outbreak in Incheon in the Republic of Korea, November 2021: a retrospective study

Objectives:
We examined factors contributing to the transmission of an acute respiratory virus within multi-use facilities, focusing on an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a movie theater in the Republic of Korea.
Methods:
This retrospective cohort study involved a descriptive analysis of 48 confirmed cases. Logistic regression was applied to a cohort of 80 theater attendees to identify risk factors for infection. The infection source and transmission route were determined through gene sequencing data analysis.
Results:
Of the 48 confirmed cases, 35 were theater attendees (72.9%), 10 were family members of attendees (20.8%), 2 were friends (4.2%), and 1 was an employee (2.1%). Among the 80 individuals who attended the 3rd to 5th screenings of the day, 35 became infected, representing a 43.8% attack rate. Specifically, 28 of the 33 third-screening attendees developed confirmed SARS-CoV-2, constituting an 84.8% attack rate. Furthermore, 11 of the 12 cases epidemiologically linked to the theater outbreak were clustered monophyletically within the AY.69 lineage. At the time of the screening, 35 individuals (72.9%) had received 2 vaccine doses. However, vaccination status did not significantly influence infection risk. Multivariate analysis revealed that close contacts had a 15.9-fold higher risk of infection (95% confidence interval, 4.37–78.39) than casual contacts.
Conclusion
SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurred within the theater, and extended into the community, via a moviegoer who attended the 3rd screening during the viral incubation period after contracting the virus from a family member. This study emphasizes the importance of adequate ventilation in theaters.
4.The prevention and response to infectious diseases in long-term care facilities in Korea: a nationwide survey

OBJECTIVES:
Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are communal environments for patients with chronic diseases or older adults, making them particularly susceptible to significant harm during infectious disease outbreaks. Nonetheless, LTCFs have historically been subject to less stringent infection prevention and control (IPC) mandates. This study aimed to assess the current state of LTCFs and to develop an IPC system tailored for these facilities following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
METHODS:
We conducted an online survey of 11,366 LTCFs in Korea from December 30, 2022 to January 20, 2023, to evaluate the components of IPC in LTCFs. The infectious diseases targeted for IPC included COVID-19, influenza, and scabies. Additionally, we compared institution-based and home-based long-term care insurance facilities.
RESULTS:
Overall, 3,537 (31.1%) LTCFs responded to the survey, comprising 1,819 (51.4%) institution-based and 1,718 (48.6%) home-based facilities. A majority (87.4%, 2,376/2,720) of these facilities experienced COVID-19 outbreaks. However, only 42.2% of home-based facilities, in contrast to 90.6% of institution-based facilities, were equipped to manage concurrent COVID-19 cases. Similarly, while 92.1% of institution-based facilities were capable of managing influenza, only 50.5% of home-based facilities could do the same. The incidence of scabies was significantly higher in institution-based facilities than in home-based ones (26.1 vs. 4.3%). Additionally, 88.7% of institution-based facilities managed scabies cases effectively, compared to only 42.1% of home-based facilities.
CONCLUSIONS
Approximately half of the LTCFs had a basic capacity to respond to infectious diseases. However, there were differences in response capabilities between institution-based facilities and home-based facilities.
5.Comparison of Monthly Characteristics of Adolescent Suicide Attempts Before, During and After COVID-19

:This study aimed to investigate the monthly characteristics of suicide attempts among adolescents considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods:
:From 2018 to 2023, patients who arrived at Korea University Ansan Hospital’s emergency depart-ment following a suicide attempt were categorized by age, with adolescents defined as those aged 18 and below.These patients were then compared across three periods: pre COVID-19, COVID-19 period, and post COVID-19 periods.
Results:
:From January 2018 to December 2023, a total of 3,008 patients who attempted suicide visited the emergency room. Among them, 333 (11.1%) were adolescents. In the overall sample, the proportion of suicide attempts in January increased during the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, while the proportion in September decreased. Among adolescents, the proportion of suicide attempts in August decreased after COVID-19 compared to before.
Conclusions
:Our findings highlight a concerning increase in suicide attempts among teenagers, showing a cor-relation with the academic semester after COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding and addressing this trend are paramount for effective suicide risk management strategies moving forward.

In recent years, next-generation sequencing (NGS)–based genetic testing has become crucial in cancer care. While its primary objective is to identify actionable genetic alterations to guide treatment decisions, its scope has broadened to encompass aiding in pathological diagnosis and exploring resistance mechanisms. With the ongoing expansion in NGS application and reliance, a compelling necessity arises for expert consensus on its application in solid cancers. To address this demand, the forthcoming recommendations not only provide pragmatic guidance for the clinical use of NGS but also systematically classify actionable genes based on specific cancer types. 10.Impact of Infection Prevention Programs on Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections Analyzed in Multicenter Study

Background:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for a large proportion of healthcare-associated infections and have a significant impact on morbidity, length of hospital stay, and mortality. Adherence to the recommended infection prevention practices can effectively reduce the incidence of CAUTIs. This study aimed to assess the characteristics of CAUTIs and the efficacy of prevention programs across hospitals of various sizes.
Methods:
Intervention programs, including training, surveillance, and monitoring, were implemented. Data on the microorganisms responsible for CAUTIs, urinary catheter utilization ratio, rate of CAUTIs per 1,000 device days, and factors associated with the use of indwelling catheters were collected from 2017 to 2019. The incidence of CAUTIs and associated data were compared between university hospitals and small- and medium-sized hospitals.
Results:
Thirty-two hospitals participated in the study, including 21 university hospitals and 11 small- and medium-sized hospitals. The microorganisms responsible for CAUTIs and their resistance rates did not differ between the two groups. In the first quarter of 2018, the incidence rate was 2.05 infections/1,000 device-days in university hospitals and 1.44 infections/1,000 device-days in small- and medium-sized hospitals. After implementing interventions, the rate gradually decreased in the first quarter of 2019, with 1.18 infections/1,000 device-days in university hospitals and 0.79 infections/1,000 device-days in small- and medium-sized hospitals. However, by the end of the study, the infection rate increased to 1.74 infections/1,000 device-days in university hospitals and 1.80 infections/1,000 device-days in small- and medium-sized hospitals.
Conclusion
We implemented interventions to prevent CAUTIs and evaluated their outcomes. The incidence of these infections decreased in the initial phases of the intervention when adequate support and personnel were present. The rate of these infections may be reduced by implementing active interventions such as consistent monitoring and adherence to guidelines for preventing infections.
