1.Digital Monitoring of Micro- and Macro-Movement Regularity in Psychiatric Inpatients With Depression

Objective:
Depression involves mood-related behavioral changes typically monitored through subjective reports, which are limited by recall bias and low temporal resolution. Digital mental health tools offer objective, continuous monitoring, but prior studies have focused on outpatients subject to environmental variability. In this preliminary feasibility study, we examined psychiatric inpatients in a controlled setting to assess associations between behavioral regularity and depression severity, highlighting the clinical potential of digital phenotyping.
Methods:
Thirty-five adults from a closed psychiatric ward were recruited, and data from 10 inpatients with ≥7 days of valid monitoring were analyzed. Depression severity was assessed weekly using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and Dysfunctional Self-focus Attributes Scale, yielding 18 samples. Hourly accelerometer and location data from wearable devices and ward sensors were processed to generate digital phenotypes—interdaily stability (IS), intradaily variability (IV), ratio of IS to IV (ISV), entropy (EN), and normalized entropy (NE)—segmented into daytime and nighttime. Linear mixed models assessed group differences, and correlation and multiple regression examined associations with depression.
Results:
Patients with asymptomatic/mild depression showed significantly higher IS_day and ISV_day, and lower EN_night, and NE_night (all p<0.05). These four features correlated with HAMD after false discovery rate (all p<0.05) correction. A regression model including IS_day and NE_night explained 60.6% of HAMD variance (p<0.05).
Conclusion
Digital monitoring provides an objective and continuous method to assess depression severity. By capturing macro- and micro-level movement regularity across day and night in an inpatient environment, this approach offers practical relevance for psychiatric care. However, results should be considered preliminary due to the limited sample size.
2.Effects of Information and Communication Technology Use on the Executive Function of Older Adults without Dementia: A Longitudinal Fixed-Effect Analysis

Background:
Impaired executive function is common in older adults. This study examined the causal relationship between the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and executive function in older adults over time.Method: This study performed a secondary analysis of data from four waves (2016–2019) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study. A fixed-effect analysis was conducted to examine the effects of ICT on the executive function of older adults without dementia aged ≥65 years. This study analyzed data from 3,334 respondents.
Results:
We observed significant positive effects of ICT use on executive function over time (standardized β=0.043–0.045; 95% confidence interval, 0.001–0.043; p<0.05).
Conclusion
The current findings support the use of ICT as a protective approach to prevent decline in executive function in community-dwelling older adults.

The Korean Atomic Bomb Survivor Cohort (K-ABC) study was designed to investigate the health impacts of atomic bomb exposure on Korean survivors and to explore whether these effects are passed down genetically to their descendants. This paper outlines the study’s design, data collection methods, baseline socio-demographic characteristics, exposure status, and disease prevalence among the participants, based on survey responses and health examinations. From 2020 to 2024, a total of 2,544 individuals, comprising 1,109 atomic bomb survivors (G1), 1,193 children of G1 (G2), and 242 grandchildren of G1 (G3), consented to participate in the study. Of these, 1,828 participants (659 in G1, 927 in G2, and 242 in G3) completed the survey and underwent health examinations, representing a participation rate of 71.9%. Exposure information was gathered using a questionnaire and verified through records from the Korean Red Cross and a handbook issued by the Japanese government. Disease prevalence was determined based on participants’ self-reported physician diagnoses. This study presents details about the K-ABC study and provides baseline data on the participants recruited. These data will be valuable for interpreting the results of future K-ABC studies.

8.Social Network Typologies and Digital Literacy Differences among Korean Older Adults: A Latent Class Analysis

Background:
This study categorized older Korean adults’ social networks and analyzed their characteristics and digital literacy differences based on type.
Methods:
We analyzed data from 9,377 Korean older adult participants of the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans, and performed latent class analysis (LCA) chi-square and Welch’s F analyses to understand the characteristics of each social network type. The Games–Howell post-hoc test was applied to determine the significance of differences between groups.
Results:
The three social network types derived using LCA were “child-centered,” “child-friend,” and “friend-centered.” The digital literacy levels differed significantly according to social network type.
Conclusion
The results of this study can be used to propose intervention programs and services associated with older adults’ social networks by examining their social network types and the corresponding differences in digital literacy.

10.Radiologic Assessment of Lung Edema Score as a Predictor of Clinical Outcome in Children with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Purpose:
The radiographic assessment of lung edema (RALE) score enables objective quantification of lung edema and is a valuable prognostic marker of adult acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to evaluate the validity of RALE score in children with ARDS.
Materials and Methods:
The RALE score was measured for its reliability and correlation to other ARDS severity indices. ARDSspecific mortality was defined as death from severe pulmonary dysfunction or the need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy. The C-index of the RALE score and other ARDS severity indices were compared via survival analyses.
Results:
Among 296 children with ARDS, 88 did not survive, and there were 70 ARDS-specific non-survivors. The RALE score showed good reliability with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.809 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.760–0.848]. In univariable analysis, the RALE score had a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.19 (95% CI, 1.18–3.11), and the significance was maintained in multivariable analysis adjusting with age, ARDS etiology, and comorbidity, with an HR of 1.77 (95% CI, 1.05–2.91). The RALE score was a good predictor of ARDS-specific mortality, with a C-index of 0.607 (95% CI, 0.519–0.695).
Conclusion
The RALE score is a reliable measure for ARDS severity and a useful prognostic marker of mortality in children, especially for ARDS-specific mortality. This score provides information that clinicians can use to decide the proper time of aggressive therapy targeting severe lung injury and to appropriately manage the fluid balance of children with ARDS.
