1.Assessing Laser Safety in Dermatology:Eye Protection and Infection Control Practices Among Board-Certified Korean Dermatologists

Background:
Laser procedures are integral to dermatologic practice, yet safety measures- particularly regarding ocular protection and plume control- are poorly studied in real-world settings.
Objective:
To evaluate current practices in eye protection, infection control, and occupational risk awareness among Korean dermatologists performing laser treatments.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted among board-certified dermatologists at the 2024 Korean Society for Dermatologic Laser Surgery meeting. The questionnaire covered demographics, laser frequency, use of goggles and masks, infection control strategies, ophthalmologic monitoring, and history of warts or cancer.
Results:
Seventy-nine respondents completed the survey. All reported using protective goggles, but only 26.6% and 22.8% did so for CO 2 and erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet lasers, respectively. Only 24.1% underwent regular eye exams, and 13.9% reported eye conditions after starting laser practice. While 89.9% used masks, 40.8% used dental masks, which are inadequate for plume protection. Suction devices were used by 94.9%, though performance specifications were unclear. Warts were reported by 46.8% of respondents; two reported cancer diagnoses after initiating laser work.
Conclusion
Despite high overall adherence to basic safety practices, critical gaps remain. Our findings highlight the need for standardized guidelines and long-term occupational health monitoring to ensure safe laser practice.
2.Exploring the Association Between Physical Fitness Components and Cognitive Function in Older Korean Adults: The SUPERBRAIN Exploratory Sub-study

Background:
and Purpose: Tailored physical exercise interventions have the potential to promote cognitive health in older adults and offer significant advantages for those more vulnerable to decline. The specific relationship between physical fitness and cognition among the elderly has not been clearly established. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the relationship between physical fitness and cognitive function in older Korean adults.
Methods:
Eighty-four community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 70.7±5.3 years; 81.0% female) completed a standardized physical fitness battery assessing handgrip strength, sit-and-reach, 30-second sit-to-stand, 2-minute stationary march, 3-m sit-walk-and-return, figure-8-walk, and T-wall response time. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Descriptive statistics, partial correlation analyses, and stepwise multiple linear regression were conducted.
Results:
Slower T-wall response time was significantly correlated with lower RBANS total index, immediate memory, and delayed memory scores. In regression models, slower T-wall response time was independently associated with lower RBANS total index (β=−0.234, p=0.026) and delayed memory scores (β=−0.295, p=0.029). The regression model for immediate memory was not statistically significant overall; therefore, no predictive conclusion was drawn for this domain. Higher education showed a significant positive association with cognitive performance.
Conclusions
Coordination, as measured by T-wall response time, emerged as the only physical fitness component consistently associated with cognitive performance in older adults. Coordination-related fitness may be an important correlate of cognitive function in older adults and a promising target for future exercise interventions.
3.Current Controversies and Insights Surrounding Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome: A Narrative Review

Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) is a type of chorioretinal inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the outer retina and/or choroid and is categorized under the group of conditions known as ‘white dot syndrome.’ This affliction predominantly occurs in otherwise healthy young-to-middle-aged females and generally follows a benign course with spontaneous recovery. The exact pathogenesis remains unclear, and there is ongoing debate regarding the primary site of inflammation. Associations with systemic conditions, including COVID-19 infection and vaccination, have also been proposed. Additionally, the presence of overlapping or coexisting chorioretinal disorders has led to the concept of ‘secondary MEWDS.’ The recent development of optical coherence tomography angiography provides new imaging features of MEWDS, though its precise role in white dot syndromes remains a topic of discussion. In this review, we focus on these current controversies and insights surrounding MEWDS.
4.Trends in Changes of Cognition, Depression, Physical Performance, and Activities of Daily Living among People with Dementia Attending Dementia Specific Day Care

Purpose:
This study aimed to identify trends in changes of cognitive function, physical function, depression, and activities of daily living (ADL) among people with dementia who had used day care centers for at least 12 months, through the analysis of data collected from day care center records.
Methods:
The participants in this descriptive survey were 63 older people with dementia. Data were collected from two dementia day care centers located in Incheon city. General characteristics and disease related characteristics were analyzed in terms of the frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Correlations between major variables were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Cognitive function, depression, physical performance, and ADL were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Friedman test.
Results:
The mean age of the participants was 77.33±6.73 years (range, 58 to 91 years) when they began attending the centers. Cognitive function significantly increased at 3 months (18.63±5.06), 6 months (18.73±5.20), and 12 months (18.63±5.43) compared to baseline (17.41±4.77). Depression significantly decreased at 3 months(2.94±2.96), 6 months (3.13±3.14), and 12 months (2.81±3.27) compared to baseline (5.20±3.87). At 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months, the physical function score (respectively 10.19±2.90, 10.33±2.84, 10.11±2.55) increased significantly compared to baseline (9.13±3.01). ADLs decreased at 3 months (8.51±1.92), 6 months (8.67±2.12), and 12 months (8.89±2.19) compared to baseline (8.41±1.88).
Conclusion
Without receiving customized day care service for dementia, cognitive function and physical function will decline and depressive feelings will increase. Therefore, delaying cognitive decline, reducing depression, and improving physical function through the use of day care services, especially at an early stage are essential to strengthen and maintain aging in place.

Background:
Primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA) is a rare disease that causes irreversible destruction of hair follicles and affects the quality of life (QOL).
Objective:
We aimed to investigate the disease awareness, medical use behavior, QOL, and real-world diagnosis and treatment status of patients with PCA.
Methods:
A self-administered questionnaire was administered to patients with PCA and their dermatologists. Patients aged between 19 and 75 years who visited one of 27 dermatology departments between September 2021 and September 2022 were included.
Results:
In total, 274 patients were included. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.47, with a mean age of 45.7 years. Patients with neutrophilic and mixed PCA were predominantly male and younger than those with lymphocytic PCA. Among patients with lymphocytic PCA, lichen planopilaris was the most common type, and among those with neutrophilic PCA, folliculitis decalvans was the most common type. Among the total patients, 28.8% were previously diagnosed with PCA, 47.0% were diagnosed with PCA at least 6 months after their first hospital visit, 20.0% received early treatment within 3 months of disease onset, and 54.4% received steady treatment. More than half of the patients had a moderate to severe impairment in QOL. Topical/intralesional steroid injections were the most common treatment. Systemic immunosuppressants were frequently prescribed to patients with lymphocytic PCA, and antibiotics were mostly prescribed to patients with neutrophilic PCA.
Conclusion
This study provides information on the disease awareness, medical use behavior, QOL, diagnosis, and treatment status of Korean patients with PCA. This can help dermatologists educate patients with PCA to understand the necessity for early diagnosis and steady treatment.

Background:
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a serious pathogen causing various infections in humans. We evaluated the serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of S. pneumoniae causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) after introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)13 in Korea and investigated the epidemiological characteristics of multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates.
Methods:
S. pneumoniae isolates causing IPD were collected from 16 hospitals in Korea between 2017 and 2019. Serotyping was performed using modified sequential multiplex PCR and the Quellung reaction. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the broth microdilution method. Multilocus sequence typing was performed on MDR isolates for epidemiological investigations.
Results:
Among the 411 S. pneumoniae isolates analyzed, the most prevalent serotype was 3 (12.2%), followed by 10A (9.5%), 34 (7.3%), 19A (6.8%), 23A (6.3%), 22F (6.1%), 35B (5.8%), 11A (5.1%), and others (40.9%). The coverage rates of PCV7, PCV10, PCV13, and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV)23 were 7.8%, 7.8%, 28.7%, and 59.4%, respectively. Resistance rates to penicillin, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, and levofloxacin were 13.1%, 9.2%, 80.3%, and 4.1%, respectively. MDR isolates accounted for 23.4% of all isolates. Serotypes 23A, 11A, 19A, and 15B accounted for the highest proportions of total isolates at 18.8%, 16.7%, 14.6%, and 8.3%, respectively. Sequence type (ST)166 (43.8%) and ST320 (12.5%) were common among MDR isolates.
Conclusions
Non-PCV13 serotypes are increasing among invasive S. pneumoniae strains causing IPD. Differences in antimicrobial resistance were found according to the specific serotype. Continuous monitoring of serotypes and antimicrobial resistance is necessary for the appropriate management of S. pneumoniae infections.
