Pediatric Emergency Medicine Journal 2026;13(1):19-28
Purpose:
Toy guns are popular among children but can pose serious risks of eye injury. This study analyzed toy gun-related ocular injuries (TGOIs) in pediatric patients over 20 years using the United States national data.
Methods:
A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was performed using the U.S. National Electronic Injury Surveillance System data from 2005 through 2024. We studied cases of pediatric patients presenting to emergency departments with TGOIs. Descriptive and comparative analyses were performed, and trends were analyzed across the study period, using chi-square test and analysis of variance.
Results:
A total of 695 pediatric cases of TGOI were identified, corresponding to an estimated 16,325 national cases in the U.S. Most injuries occurred in males (77.4%) and age of 7-12 years (54.0%). Common diagnoses included corneal abrasion (33.5%) and hyphema (22.2%), with severe cases also reported such as ruptured globe (1.0%) and corneal laceration (0.3%). Injuries were most frequent during winter (32.1%). Over the study period, there were increases in mean age (from 8.9 years [2005-2009] to 9.6 years [2020-2024]), overall reported number of cases (from 47 to 341), and diagnosis of hyphema (from 8.5% to 25.2%).
Conclusions
Pediatric TGOI is increasing in frequency, with shifting demographic and clinical patterns. These findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety regulations and public health interventions to prevent vision-threatening trauma in children.

Journal of Korean Critical Care Nursing 2024;17(3):87-98
Purpose:
: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of end-of-life care debriefing as an intervention to reduce moral distress among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses after end-of-life care.
Methods:
: This quasiexperimental study included 104 nurses (46 in the control group and 58 in the intervention group) working in three medical ICUs and two surgical ICUs. The data collection period was from September 1, 2017, to January 31, 2018, and end-of-life care debriefing in the intervention group was implemented over three months. Debriefings were conducted in groups or individually, with eight people participating in three or more debriefings. Comparisons of end-of-life care stress, end-of-life care attitudes, and wellness between the two groups were performed using an ANCOVA. Satisfaction with the debriefing was analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results:
: End-of-life care stress and wellness did not differ between the groups, but there was a significant difference in end-of-life care attitudes. Overall, 50% of the participants were satisfied with the debriefing.
Conclusion
: Based on the finding that end-of-life care debriefing has a positive impact on ICU nurses’ attitudes toward end-of-life care, it can be used as an effective measure to reduce nurses’ moral distress. An institutional debriefing system should be established and operationalized.
3.Analysis of difference in body fluid composition and dietary intake between Korean adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus

Journal of Nutrition and Health 2023;56(4):377-390
Purpose:
Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes body fluid imbalance because of hyperglycemia, but there is a lack of research on the relationship between DM and body fluid imbalance in the Korean population. This study compared the differences in body fluid composition and dietary intake between individuals with type 2 DM (T2DM) and a normal control (NC) group without the disease.
Methods:
In this study, 36 subjects with T2DM and 21 without diabetes were divided into the T2DM and NC groups. The subjects were divided into four subgroups to assess differences in body fluid volume according to sex: men T2DM group (n = 24), men NC group (n = 9), women T2DM group (n = 12), and women NC group (n = 12). The body fluid composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis, including intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), total body water (TBW), ECW/ICW, and ECW/TBW. Nutrient intake was evaluated using their dietary records.
Results:
The results showed that the ECW/ICW and the ECW/TBW were significantly higher in the T2DM group compared to the NC group. Both men and women in the T2DM group showed significantly higher ECW/ICW and ECW/TBW than the respective NC group. The T2DM group had a higher carbohydrate, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, sodium, and potassium intake per 1,000 kcal and lower total daily energy, fat, and cholesterol intake per 1,000 kcal than the NC group.
Conclusion
These results suggest a positive association between T2DM and body fluid imbalance. This study can be used widely as basic data for the evaluation and diagnosis of diabetic complications in the future.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of gastric banding surgery on the improvement of glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) of morbidly obese (MO) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with the consideration that obesity was associated with insulin resistance and T2DM. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 38 MO with T2DM patients and 50 MO patients. Pre-surgery and post-surgery data were analyzed a year later. The medical data from these patients, including sex, age, height, weight, body composition, HbA(1c), triglyceride, total cholesterol, aspartate transaminase (AST), and alanine transaminase (ALT) were measured. There were significant reductions of body weight and body mass index (BMI), body fat, body fat percentage, waist-hip ratio, visceral fat, and obesity in each group before and after gastric banding surgery. Results of AST, ALT, and HbA(1c) had significant reductions in each group. For HbA(1c), treatment rate was 71% in the MO group with T2DM with significant reduction of 22.8%. It is thought that a gastric banding surgery is one of the breakthrough methods not only for weight loss but also for the prevention of complication of the obese patients with T2DM. Thus, gastric banding surgery could be effective in controlling HbA(1c) in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Journal of Nutrition and Health 2016;49(3):144-152
PURPOSE: This study was conducted in order to develop morning bread using powdered citrus peels and to examine the effect of its several biological activities for 12 weeks in overweight adults (BMI ≧ 23) living in dormitories of Chonbuk National University. METHODS: Control bread was prepared using the same formula except for replacing the wheat flour with 3% citrus peel powder. Subjects were classified according to two groups: Intake group of 3% citrus peel powder fortified morning bread (n = 30) and general morning bread (n = 30). RESULTS: The results of our study showed no significant effects of citrus peel powdered morning bread on anthropometric indices and biochemical characteristics among overweight adults. Despite the slight reduction in total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, GOT, and GPT (p < 0.05), no significant differences in changes of these values were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The short duration of our intervention might have resulted in the lack of any significant effect. Therefore, conduct of further studies with longer duration is warranted in order that the results from this study can be utilized as a basis for the development of food products with citrus peel powder.
