BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
Lutein, a dietary carotenoid, plays a crucial role in protecting eye health as an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. Green leafy vegetables constitute a major source of lutein; however, comparative studies on different consumption methods are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the bioavailability of lutein from lutein-rich foods, namely, raw vegetables and raw vegetable juice.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
In this study, 18 adults were recruited. They were randomly divided into three groups: commercial lutein supplement (LUT, 20 mg), raw vegetable (RV), and raw vegetable juice (RVJ) groups. Blood was collected at 0-, 4-, 6-, 8-, 12-, 24-, and 30-h intervals after the consumption of each test meal. Participants’ serum lutein levels were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Considering lutein’s wellestablished anti-inflammatory properties, changes in inflammatory status were assessed by measuring serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. Furthermore, urinary metabolomic profiling was conducted using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to evaluate metabolic alterations.
RESULTS:
After consuming each lutein-rich food, participants’ blood lutein levels were analyzed, and the serum concentration peaked at 12 h (0.37 ± 0.13 μg/mL), 24 h (0.61 ± 0.18 μg/mL), and 30 h (0.42 ± 0.16 μg/mL) after RV, LUT, and RVJ consumption, respectively.Additionally, hs-CRP levels decreased following lutein-rich food consumption. Twelve hours after consumption, hs-CRP levels decreased to 0.81 and 0.83 mg/L in the RV and RVJ groups, respectively. Twenty-four hours after consumption, they further decreased to 0.68 and 0.74 mg/L in the LUT and RVJ groups, respectively. Thirty hours after consumption, a reduction to 0.61 mg/L was observed in the RVJ group. Furthermore, after consuming each luteinrich food, N-acetyl glycoprotein levels decreased at 24 h, reflecting metabolic alterations potentially associated with lutein metabolism.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that the short-term consumption of lutein-rich foods, regardless of their type or source, potentially yields health benefits.
2.Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S17 Silencing Inhibits Proliferation and Invasiveness of Lung Cancer Cells
Journal of Cancer Prevention 2025;30(1):47-55
Chromosomal alterations are frequent events in lung cancer progression. Although gains and losses of chromosomal position have been reported, the association between copy number alteration and lung cancer patient survival has not been extensively investigated. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis of public cBioPortal datasets spanning 25 lung cancer studies to identify putative cancer driver genes with copy number alterations associated with overall patient survival. Ten copy-number altered genes enriched in deceased lung cancer patients were identified. Seven of these putative driver genes were located in the 7p11.2 chromosomal location, and two were in the 9p21.3 cytoband. Among these genes, the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S17 (MRPS17) amplification was significantly associated with a lower patient survival rate (P = 1.47e-7). To investigate the functional role of MRPS17, small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown was performed in two non-small cell lung cancer cell lines, A549 and NCI-H460. MRPS17 knockdown significantly reduced cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and anchorage-independent growth in both cell lines. Furthermore, knockdown of MRPS17 decreased the activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B signaling pathway, suggesting its role in driving lung cancer progression through this critical oncogenic pathway. Our findings highlight MRPS17 as a potential cancer therapy target and a prognostic biomarker that may improve the survival rates of lung cancer patients. Future studies should explore its inhibition as a therapeutic strategy as well as elucidate its molecular mechanisms in cancer progression.

Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2024;24(4):391-399
Background:
This study aimed to investigate the erosive potential of powdered vitamin C on the bovine enamel tooth surface.
Methods:
The experiment included five groups: Lemona, Vitagran, Korea Eundan, Coca-Cola (positive controls), and artificialsaliva (negative controls). The pH and titratable acidity were measured. Bovine enamel specimens were immersed in the experimental solutions for 15 minutes each day for 7 days. The surface microhardness was measured using the Vickers hardness number before immersion and on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th days. The surfaces of the bovine enamel specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Results:
The pH of the experimental groups was as follows: Lemona (2.04±0.04) had the lowest pH, followed by Vitagran(2.56±0.01), the positive control group Coca-Cola (2.60±0.03), Korea Eundan (3.14±0.02), and the negative control group artificial saliva (7.06±0.05). Surface microhardness decreased significantly during the immersion period (p<0.001). The largest surface microhardness reduction value was shown in Lemona (–201.22±20.60), followed by Vitagran (–190.02±14.73), Korea Eundan (–189.27±27.14), Coca-Cola (–99.28±17.21), artificial saliva (–10.99±9.94). According to the SEM findings, the experimental and positive control groups exhibited rough surfaces with micropores, whereas the negative control group exhibited smooth surfaces before specimen immersion.
Conclusion
Consuming powdered vitamin C at a low pH may degrade the enamel surface. To reduce the erosive effect, it isrecommended to rinse the mouth with water and brush the teeth after an hour.

Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2024;24(3):146-151
Background:
Research is continuously being conducted on the relationship between the airway and malocclusion. The nose, asthe upper part of the respiratory pathway, plays a critical role. While various international studies employ the Nasal Index classification for nasal morphology, domestic research remains scarce. This research investigates the proportions of nasal morphology in malocclusion patients utilizing a 3D software.
Methods:
The study evaluated 100 malocclusion patients in their 20s (40 Class I, 34 Class II, 26 Class III). Cone-beam computedtomography was used with the Mimics (ver. 22; Materialise) 3D program to model the skull and soft tissues of the patients in three views: coronal, sagittal, and frontal.
Results:
The results showed that in Class I, there were 5 leptorrhine (long and narrow) cases, 30 mesorrhine (moderate shape)cases, and 5 platyrrhine (broad and short) cases. In Class II, there were 3 leptorrhine, 25 mesorrhine, and 6 platyrrhine cases. In Class III, there were 2 leptorrhine, 21 mesorrhine, and 3 platyrrhine cases.
Conclusion
The findings of this study indicate that there is no significant correlation between the size of the nose and malocclusionin patients. Additionally, additional research related to this study is expected to be necessary.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 2024;62(3):129-135
Background:
Warts are benign hyperkeratotic proliferative skin lesions caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).Traditional destructive treatments, such as cryotherapy, have limited effectiveness and can lead to substantial adverse effects. Acyclovir, an antiviral agent against human herpes viruses, may be effective in the treatment of warts, as HPV is also a DNA virus.
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intralesional acyclovir for the treatment of warts.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective study of 21 patients diagnosed with periungual or palmoplantar warts who were treated with intralesional acyclovir (25 mg/mL) injections between January 2022 and December 2022. The treatment was repeated at 3- to 4-week intervals, and the therapeutic effect was evaluated one month after the final treatment session.
Results:
Complete resolution of warts was observed in nine patients (42.9%), partial response in seven patients (33.3%), and no response in five patients (23.8%). Injection-related transient pain and hemorrhage were reported by all patients, with a hemorrhagic crust observed in one patient (4.76%) and transient onycholysis noted in another patient (4.76%). No permanent nail deformities have been reported.
Conclusion
Intralesional acyclovir is a potentially effective and safe treatment modality for periungual and palmoplantar warts.

The Ewha Medical Journal 2024;47(2):e28-
We report a rare case of gastric adenocarcinoma with enteroblastic differentiation (GAED) that was treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection followed by additional distal gastrectomy with lymph node dissection. A 67-year-old man underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for a gastric lesion, which was diagnosed as GAED with submucosal and lymphatic invasion. Histologically, GAED is characterized by a tubulopapillary growth pattern and clear cells that resemble those of the primitive fetal gut. Immunohistochemically, GAED variably expresses oncofetal proteins such as glypican-3, alpha-fetoprotein, and spalt-like transcription factor 4. Despite negative margins, additional gastrectomy with lymph node dissection was performed due to submucosal and lymphatic invasion. No residual tumor or metastasis was detected, and the patient remained disease-free for 2 years before dying from causes unrelated to GAED. Given its aggressive nature, frequent lymphovascular invasion, and high metastatic potential, clinicians should recognize the histopathological diagnosis of this rare tumor and its propensity for aggressiveness.
