Brain-computer interface (BCI) has high application value in the field of healthcare. However, in practical clinical applications, convenience and system performance should be considered in the use of BCI. Wearable BCIs are generally with high convenience, but their performance in real-life scenario needs to be evaluated. This study proposed a wearable steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI system equipped with a small-sized electroencephalogram (EEG) collector and a high-performance training-free decoding algorithm. Ten healthy subjects participated in the test of BCI system under simplified experimental preparation. The results showed that the average classification accuracy of this BCI was 94.10% for 40 targets, and there was no significant difference compared to the dataset collected under the laboratory condition. The system achieved a maximum information transfer rate (ITR) of 115.25 bit/min with 8-channel signal and 98.49 bit/min with 4-channel signal, indicating that the 4-channel solution can be used as an option for the few-channel BCI. Overall, this wearable SSVEP-BCI can achieve good performance in real-life scenario, which helps to promote BCI technology in clinical practice.

Objective:To investigate the dosimetric characteristics of intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) and photon volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in typical head and neck malignant tumors. Methods:Three types of typical head and neck tumors (nasopharyngeal carcinoma, parotid gland carcinoma, laryngeal carcinoma) treated at Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute from December 2023 to December 2024 were taken as research subjects. IMPT and VMAT radiotherapy plans were created according to clinical prescription requirements of target and organs at risk limits respectively. The conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI) and gradient index (GI) for target coverage of two radiotherapy plans were evaluated for 3 patients, as well as the dosimetric indicators of organs at risk. Results:The CI of IMPT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, parotid gland carcinoma and laryngeal carcinoma were 0.70, 0.72 and 0.67, respectively. The HI were 0.11, 0.08 and 0.08, respectively. The GI were 3.08, 2.49 and 3.75, respectively. The CI of VMAT plans were 0.77, 0.82 and 0.91, respectively. The HI were 0.12, 0.10 and 0.04, respectively. The GI were 3.67, 2.63 and 3.45, respectively. The results showed that CI of IMPT plan was slightly lower than that of VMAT plan, and HI of IMPT plan was comparable to that of VMAT plan, the GI of the IMPT plan for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and parotid gland carcinoma was lower than that of the VMAT plan, and the GI of the IMPT plan for patient with laryngeal carcinoma was higher than that of the VMAT plan, and all were within the clinically acceptable range. The IMPT plan has demonstrated significant dose advantages in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, parotid gland carcinoma and laryngeal carcinoma. For patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the IMPT plan reduced the D max of the left and right crystals by 54.1% and 50.4%, respectively, compared to VMAT plan, and reduced the D mean of the oral and laryngeal tissues by 40.5% and 49.6%, respectively. For patient with parotid gland carcinoma, IMPT plan reduced the D max of the brainstem and spinal cord by 66.2% and 40.5%, respectively, compared to VMAT plan. For patient with laryngeal carcinoma, IMPT reduced spinal cord D max by 77.0%, while thyroid cartilage D mean increased by 8.0% compared to VMAT plan. For the additional dose in the patients' body, taking the absolute volumes occupied by the prescribed dose areas of 10%, 30%, and 50% in the patients' body as examples, IMPT plan of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patient decreased by 29.7%, 29.6%, and 34.9% compared to VMAT plan, respectively. IMPT plan of parotid gland carcinoma patient decreased by 61.0%, 39.7%, and 17.4% compared to VMAT plan, respectively. IMPT plan of laryngeal carcinoma patient decreased by 63.9%, 31.7%, and 4.1% compared to VMAT plan, respectively. Conclusions:Compared with VMAT plan, IMPT plan can effectively reduce the irradiation dose of most organs at risk near the target of head and neck tumors, but the dose of string organs close to the target area may be higher, which needs attention.

The use of nitrification inhibitors has been suggested as a strategy to decrease cadmium(Cd)accumulation in crops. However, the most efficient nitrification inhibitor for mitigating crop Cd accumulation remains to be elucidated, and whether and how changes in soil microbial structure are involved in this process also remains unclear. To address these questions, this study applied three commercial nitrification inhibitors,namely,dicyandiamide(DCD),3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate(DMPP),and nitrapyrin(NP),to pakchoi. The results showed that both DCD and DMPP(but not NP)could efficiently decrease Cd concentrations in pakchoi in urea-and ammonium-fertilized soils. In addition, among the three tested nitrification inhibitors,DMPP was the most efficient in decreasing the Cd concentration in pakchoi. The nitrification inhibitors decreased pakchoi Cd concentrations by suppressing acidification-induced Cd availability and reshaping the soil microbial structure;the most effective nitrification inhibitor was DMPP.Ammonia oxidation generates the most protons during nitrification and is inhibited by nitrification inhibitors.Changes in environmental factors and predatory bacterial abundance caused by the nitrification inhibitors changed the soil microbial structure and increased the potential participants in plant Cd accumulation. In summary, our study identified DMPP as the most efficient nitrification inhibitor for mitigating crop Cd contamination and observed that the soil microbial structural changes caused by the nitrification inhibitors contributed to decreasing Cd concentration in pakchoi.

Objective To investigate the causal associations between components of metabolic syndrome(MetS)and endometrial carcinoma using Mendelian randomization(MR).Methods Data mining of the Genome-Wide Association Studies(GWAS)database was performed, with the exposure factors being MetS components(lipids, blood pressure, blood glucose, and obesity)and the outcome factor being endometrial carcinoma.MR analyses were performed with the help of regression models, including MR-Egger method, weighted median method, and inverse variance weighted(IVW)method, and the causal relationship between MetS components and endometrial carcinoma was evaluated by odds ratio(OR).Reverse MR analysis was performed for the MetS components found to have a causal relationship with endometrial carcinoma in the forward MR analysis. Results After applying Benjamini-Hochberg correction,IVW results showed a causal relationship between multiple MetS components(obesity, lipids, blood pressure, and blood glucose)and endometrial carcinoma.Specifically, the three components of obesity, including body mass index, overweight, and percentage of body fat, were causally associated with an increased risk of endometrial carcinoma(P<0.001,OR>1).In blood lipids, high cholesterol levels(P<0.001,OR<1),high triglyceride levels, and high phospholipid levels were causally associated with a reduced risk of endometrial carcinoma(P<0.05,OR<1).Regarding blood pressure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, and stroke were causally associated with a reduced risk of endometrial carcinoma(P<0.05,OR<1).Regarding blood glucose, low fasting insulin levels, type 1 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, and high glycated hemoglobin levels were causally associated with a reduced risk of endometrial carcinoma(P<0.05,OR<1),while type 2 diabetes mellitus and high fasting insulin levels were causally associated with an increased risk of endometrial carcinoma(P<0.05,OR>1).Reverse MR analysis did not produce any evidence for a reverse causality between the above positive MetS components and endometrial carcinoma. Conclusion The MR study suggests that obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus are risk factors for endometrial carcinoma, while other MetS components, including hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance, and complications of diabetes mellitus, are protective factors for endometrial carcinoma.Further research is needed to clarify the association between MetS and endometrial carcinoma and to further explore the underlying mechanisms involved.

BACKGROUND:
Islet transplantation is currently considered the most promising method for treating insulin-dependent diabetes. The two most-studied artificial islets are alginate-encapsulated b cells or b cell spheroids. As three-dimensional (3D) models, both artificial islets have better insulin secretory functions and transplantation efficiencies than cells in twodimensional (2D) monolayer culture. However, the effects of these two methods have not been compared yet. Therefore, in this study, cells from the mouse islet b cell line Min6 were constructed as scaffold-free spheroids or alginate-encapsulated dispersed cells.
METHODS:
MIN6 cell spheroids were prepared by using Agarose-base microwell arrays. The insulin secretion level was determined by mouse insulin ELISA kit, and the gene and protein expression status of the MIN6 were performed by Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunoblot, respectively.
RESULTS:
Both 3D cultures effectively promoted the proliferation and glucose-stimulated insulin release (GSIS) of MIN6 cells compared to 2D adherent cells. Furthermore, 1% alginate-encapsulated MIN6 cells demonstrated more significant effects than the spheroids. In general, three pancreatic genes were expressed at higher levels in response to the 3D culture than to the 2D culture, and pancreatic/duodenal homeobox-1 (PDX1) expression was higher in the cells encapsulated in 1% alginate than that in the spheroids. A western blot analysis showed that 1% alginate-encapsulated MIN6 cells activated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/serine/threonine protein kinase (AKT)/forkhead transcription factor FKHR (FoxO1) pathway more than the spheroids, 0.5% alginate-, or 2% alginate-encapsulated cells did. The 3D MIN6 culture, therefore, showed improved effects compared to the 2D culture, and the 1% alginate-encapsulated MIN6 cells exhibited better effects than the spheroids. The upregulation of PDX1 expression through the activation of the PI3K/AKT/FoxO1 pathway may mediate the improved cell proliferation and GSIS in 1% alginate-encapsulated MIN6 cells.
CONCLUSION
This study may contribute to the construction of in vitro culture systems for pancreatic islets to meet clinical requirements.
