Purpose: Although the prevalence of a discoid lateral meniscus is relatively rare, estimated at approximately 0.4% to 5.0% in the Western world, studies have shown that the incidence is significantly higher in Asia, particularly in South Korea and Japan, ranging from 10.5% to 16.6%. On the other hand, previous studies that reported the incidence of discoid lateral meniscus mainly relied on patients who underwent arthroscopic or open surgery. This study examined the incidence of discoid lateral meniscus using a magnetic resonance imaging-based diagnostic approach. Materials and Methods: This study conducted a retrospective review of the prevalence of discoid lateral meniscus in 10,810 male patients with knee pain who underwent magnetic resonance imaging at the author’s single institution between January 2013 and January 2023. The mean age of the patients was 42.55±15.93 years old (range: 12 to 82). The patient demographics, including age, were analyzed.The characteristics of the discoid lateral meniscus were also analyzed, including the subtype and presence of a combined lateral meniscus tear. Results: This study identified 1,025 patients (9.5%) with a discoid lateral meniscus, including 129 with the complete subtype, 893 with the incomplete subtype, and 3 with the Wrisberg-type subtype. Although there was no significant difference in prevalence between sexes, the highest diagnosis rate of discoid lateral meniscus was observed in the 41–60-year-old (10.1%) age group, which was statistically significant (p=0.025). Among the 164 patients with a concurrent lateral meniscus tear, the horizontal type (80 patients, 48.8%) was the most frequently observed. Conclusion While the incidence in the present study was slightly lower than that reported in previous arthroscopic-based studies, the findings still suggest a relatively high prevalence of discoid lateral meniscus in Korea compared to other countries. In contrast to earlier research that suggested a decline in incidence with age, this study found that the incidence of discoid lateral meniscus was highest among individuals aged 41–60 years.

Background: This study aimed to identify the relationship between gait parameters and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods: The study group comprised 134 patients with AS and 124 patients were enrolled as controls. All study participants underwent instrumented gait analysis and completed clinical questionnaires. The kinematic parameters of gait were walking speed, step length, cadence, stance phase, single support, double support, phase coordination index (PCI), and gait asymmetry (GA). For each patient, a visual analog scale (VAS; 0–10) score was used to assess back pain, 36-item short form survey (SF-36) questionnaire was administered to evaluate the HRQOL, and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) was calculated.Using kinematic parameters and questionnaires, statistical analyses were done to investigate significant differences between the groups. Relationship of gait kinematic data and questionnaires of clinical outcome was also evaluated. Results: Among the 134 patients with AS, 34 were women and 100 were men. In the control group, 26 were women and 98 were men. The patients with AS and control group patients had significant differences in terms of walking speed, step length, single support, PCI, and GA. However, such differences were not observed in cadence, stance phase, and double support (p > 0.05). In correlation analyses, gait kinematic parameters and clinical outcomes were significantly related with each other. In multiple regression analysis performed to identify predictive factors for clinical outcome, walking speed was found to predict VAS, and walking speed and step length were found to predict the BASDAI and SF-36 scores. Conclusions Patients with and without AS had significant differences in the gait parameters. Correlation analysis showed significant correlation between the gait kinematic data and clinical outcomes. In particular, walking speed and step length successfully predicted clinical outcomes in patients with AS.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the influence of different sizes of spoons (normal spoon, 8.3 cc vs small spoon, 4 cc) on eating rate, energy intake and the satiety levels of female college students. METHODS: Twenty four healthy female college students participated in this study once a week for 2 weeks. Two hundred ten grams of cooked rice and 250 g of beef shank soup with a normal spoon and same amount of rice and soup with a small size spoon were served to the same participants over two consecutive weeks. After each lunch, the eating rate, energy intake, and the satiety levels were measured. RESULTS: Results showed that the subjects who were using a small spoon ate less beef shank soup (149.0 kcal) (p < 0.01) and had lower total energy intake (423.3 kcal) (p < 0.05) than using a normal spoon (178.7 and 461.1 kcal, respectively). Also, the meal time (15.7 min) (p < 0.01), a serving per one spoon (8.6 g) (p < 0.001), and eating rate (27.9 g/min) (p < 0.001) of those who used a small spoon were significantly different than that of those who used a normal spoon (13.6 min, 12.5 g and 35.7 g/min, respectively). However, despite consuming less energy at lunch, the level of satiety after eating from the small spoon was not significantly different from the normal spoon immediately after, 1 hour after and 2 hour after lunch. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that students were able to control their eating rate by using a small spoon and they could feel full enough even though they eat less. In conclusion, eating rate decrease by using a small spoon may play an important role in food intake.

In a paleo-parasitological analysis of soil samples obtained from V-shaped pits dating to the ancient Baekje period in Korean history, we discovered Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Clonorchis sinensis eggs. In light of the samples' seriously contaminated state, the V-shaped pits might have served as toilets, cesspits, or dung heaps. For a long period of time, researchers scouring archaeological sites in Korea have had difficulties locating such structures. In this context then, the present report is unique because similar kind of the ancient ruins must become an ideal resource for successful sampling in our forthcoming paleoparasitological studies.

Neutrophils play a key role in innate immunity, and the identification of new stimuli that stimulate neutrophil activity is a very important issue. In this study, we identified three novel peptides by screening a synthetic hexapeptide combinatorial library. The identified peptides GMMWAI, MMHWAM, and MMHWFM caused an increase in intracellular Ca2+ in a concentration-dependent manner via phospholipase C activity in human neutrophils. The three peptides acted specifically on neutrophils and monocytes and not on other non-leukocytic cells. As a physiological characteristic of the peptides, we observed that the three peptides induced chemotactic migration of neutrophils as well as stimulated superoxide anion production. Studying receptor specificity, we observed that two of the peptides (GMMWAI and MMHWFM) acted on formyl peptide receptor (FPR)1 while the other peptide (MMHWAM) acted on FPR2. Since the three novel peptides were specific agonists for FPR1 or FPR2, they might be useful tools to study FPR1- or FPR2-mediated immune response and signaling.

PURPOSE: We wanted to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of overactive bladder(OAB) in Korean children who were 5-13 years of age, according to the definition of OAB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomly selected cross-sectional study was conducted on 26 kindergartens and 27 elementary schools nationwide in Korea. There were 19,240 children; a parent was asked to complete the questionnaires, which included items about OAB and the children's voiding and defecating habits. OAB was defined as urgency with or without urge incontinence, and usually with an increased daytime frequency and nocturia(ICCS 2006, group A) or an increased daytime frequency(>8 times/day) and/or urge urinary incontinence with or without urgency (group B); its prevalence and associated factors were investigated. RESULTS: The response rate for the questionnaires was 85.84%. The overall prevalence of OAB was 16.59%(group A) and 18.79%(group B). For groups A and B, the prevalence of OAB decreased with age from 22.89% to 12.16% and from 40.44% to 9.60%, respectively(p=0.0001). The overall rate of wet and dry OAB was 26.97% and 73.03%, respectively. Compared to the normal group, the children with OAB had a higher prevalence of nocturnal enuresis(NE), constipation, fecal incontinence, a history of urinary tract infection and delayed bladder control in both groups A and B(p<0.05). The rate of increased daytime frequency and urge incontinence were 3.69% and 2.31%(p=0.009), and 26.97% and 14.78%(p=0.0001) in group A and for the non-OAB children, respectively; their prevalence in group A decreased with age from 5.04% to 3.06% and from 45.74% to 18.50%, respectively(p=0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence of OAB in group A for Korean children 5-13 years of age was similar to that in group B. However, the range of prevalence in group B was much more variable than that in group A. NE, constipation, fecal incontinence, a history of urinary tract infection and delayed bladder control may be risk factors for OAB in children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the short- and long-term clinical outcomes and valvular changes after percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty (PMV) in Sejong Hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Four hundred sixty-seven patients received PMV (Ed-already defined above) using the Inoue Balloon at Sejong hospital from 1990 to 2002. Short and long-term results, restenosis-free survival rate and prognostic factors for each result were analyzed by Chi-square, Cox regression analysis, Life table method and Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: After PMV, mitral valve area increased from 0.94+/-0.21 cm2 to 1.76+/-0.37 cm2 and the success rate (MVA>1.5 cm2 or increased by at least 50% without the development of moderate to severe mitral regurgitation) was 78.9%. Age (< or =50 years, p=0.018), echo score (< or =9, p=0.05) and pre-procedural mitral valve area (MVA, > or =1.1 cm2, p=0.001) were independent favorable prognostic factors for short-term result. As for the development of moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, pre-procedural MVA (< or =1.0 cm2, p=0.031) and echo score (>9, p=0.043) were independent predictive factors. Median restenosis-free survival was 82.98 months and the restenosis-free survival rate was 70.9% at 3 years post-PMV, 48.1% at 6 years and 29.6% at 10 years. The independent prognostic factor for restenosis-free survival rate was left atrial dimension (LAD< or =60 mm, p=0.015). In addition, echo score (< or =8, p=0.412), pre-procedural MVA (> or =1.0 cm2, p=0.24) and ejection fraction (EF> or =55%, p=0.146) had an effect on the good long-term results of PMV from multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: PMV was a very successful treatment method for mitral stenosis. Pre-procedural MVA was a representative predictive factor for short and long-term outcomes and the development of mitral regurgitation.
