To investigate the effects of phosphorus fertilizer on the morphological traits, active ingredients and rhizosphere soil microbial community of Polygala tenuifolia. The phosphorus fertilizer was calculated in terms of P_2O_5. Five treatments were set up: 0(CK), 17(P1), 34(P2), 51(P3), and 68(P4) kg per Mu(1 Mu≈667 m~2). A randomized block design was adopted. Samples of P. tenuifolia and its rhizosphere soil were collected under different superphosphate fertilizer treatments. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the rhizosphere soil microbial community, 9 morphological traits were measured and the content of 11 active ingredients were determined. The results showed that the whole plant weight, shoot fresh weight, root weight, and root peel thickness were the highest under P1 treatment, increasing by 34.41%, 38.80%, 39.21%, and 3.17% respectively compared to CK. Under P2 treatment, the plant height, stem diameter, root thickness, and core thickness were significantly higher than CK. Phosphorus fertilizer had a significant impact on the content of tenuifolin, sibiricose A5, sibiricose A6, arillanin A, 3,6'-disinapoyl sucrose, and polygalaxanthone Ⅲ. Correlation analysis results showed that the relative abundance of Arthrobacter, Bacillus, norank_f_Vicinamibacteraceae, norank_o_Vicinamibacterales, MND1 and other bacteria, as well as the relative abundance of Neocosmospora, Paraphoma and other fungi were positively correlated with root diameter, wood core diameter, the whole plant weight, root weight, shoot fresh weight of P. tenuifolia. Bacillus, Neocosmospora, Subulicystidium were significantly positively correlated with oligosaccharides such as 3,6'-disinapoyl sucrose, sibiricose A5、sibiricose A6、glomeratose A、arillanin A and tenuifoliside C. Arthrobacter, Humicola, Aspergillus, Paraphoma were positively correlated with tenuifolin and norank_f_Vicinamibacteraceae, norank_o_Vicinamibacterales, Fusarium were positively correlated with polygalaxanthone Ⅲ. Evidently, appropriate phosphorus application is conducive to the growth and quality improvement of P. tenuifolia, and can increase the abundance of beneficial microorganisms in the soil.

Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) is a critical endocrine mediator implicated in male reproductive physiology. To investigate the correlation between IGF2 protein levels and various aspects of male infertility, specifically focusing on sperm quality, inflammation, and DNA damage, a cohort of 320 male participants was recruited from the Women's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Hangzhou, China) between 1 st January 2024 and 1 st March 2024. The relationship between IGF2 protein concentrations and sperm parameters was assessed, and Spearman correlation and linear regression analysis were employed to evaluate the independent associations between IGF2 protein levels and risk factors for infertility. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure IGF2 protein levels in seminal plasma, alongside markers of inflammation (tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α] and interleukin-1β [IL-1β]). The relationship between seminal plasma IGF2 protein levels and DNA damage marker phosphorylated histone H2AX (γ-H2AX) was also explored. Our findings reveal that IGF2 protein expression decreased notably in patients with asthenospermia and teratospermia. Correlation analysis revealed nuanced associations between IGF2 protein levels and specific sperm parameters, and low IGF2 protein concentrations correlated with increased inflammation and DNA damage in sperm. The observed correlations between IGF2 protein levels and specific sperm parameters, along with its connection to inflammation and DNA damage, underscore the importance of IGF2 in the broader context of male reproductive health. These findings lay the groundwork for future research and potential therapeutic interventions targeting IGF2-related pathways to enhance male fertility.

ObjectiveFunctional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a novel non-invasive technique for monitoring cerebral activity, can be integrated with upper limb rehabilitation robots to facilitate the real-time assessment of neurological rehabilitation outcomes. The rehabilitation robot is designed with 3 training modes: passive, active, and resistance. Among these, the resistance mode has been demonstrated to yield superior rehabilitative outcomes for patients with a certain level of muscle strength. The control modes in the resistance mode can be categorized into dynamic and static control. However, the effects of different control modes in the resistance mode on the motor function of patients with upper limb hemiplegia in stroke remain unclear. Furthermore, the effects of force, an important parameter of different control modes, on the activation of brain regions have rarely been reported. This study investigates the effects of dynamic and static resistance modes under varying resistance levels on cerebral functional alterations during motor rehabilitation in post-stroke patients. MethodsA cohort of 20 stroke patients with upper limb dysfunction was enrolled in the study, completing preparatory adaptive training followed by 3 intensity-level tasks across 2 motor paradigms. The bilateral prefrontal cortices (PFC), bilateral primary motor cortices (M1), bilateral primary somatosensory cortices (S1), and bilateral premotor and supplementary motor cortices (PM) were examined in both the resting and motor training states. The lateralization index (LI), phase locking value (PLV), network metrics were employed to examine cortical activation patterns and topological properties of brain connectivity. ResultsThe data indicated that both dynamic and static modes resulted in significantly greater activation of the contralateral M1 area and the ipsilateral PM area when compared to the resting state. The static patterns demonstrated a more pronounced activation in the contralateral M1 in comparison to the dynamic patterns. The results of brain network analysis revealed significant differences between the dynamic and resting states in the contralateral PFC area and contralateral M1 area (F=4.709, P=0.038), as well as in the contralateral PM area and ipsilateral M1 area (F=4.218, P=0.049). Moreover, the findings indicated a positive correlation between the activation of the M1 region and the increase in force in the dynamic mode, which was reversed in the static mode. ConclusionBoth dynamic and static resistance training modes have been demonstrated to activate the corresponding brain functional regions. Dynamic resistance modes elicit greater oxygen changes and connectivity to the region of interest (ROI) than static resistance modes. Furthermore, the effects of increasing force differ between the two modes. In patients who have suffered a stroke, dynamic modes may have a more pronounced effect on the activation of exercise-related functional brain regions.

OBJECTIVE:
To compare the efficacy of percutaneous pedicle screw combined with unilateral nail placement combined with bone cement strengthening and bilateral nail placement in the treatment of osteoporotic thoracic and lumbar fractures.
METHODS:
A retrospective case-control study was used to analyze the clinical data of 78 patients with osteoporotic thoracic and lumbar fractures admitted from October 2017 to May 2019. According to the surgical method, it was divided into percutaneous pedicle screw combined with unilateral nail placement combined with unilateral bone cement strengthening group(bone cement group) and percutaneous pedicle screw combined with bilateral nail placement(screw group). In the bone cement group, 40 patients included 16 males and 24 females, with a mean age of (62.1±8.1) years old. In the screw group, 38 patients included 18 males and 20 females with a mean age of (65.1±9.3) years old. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay and postoperative complications were compared between two groups. The kyphosis Cobb angle, anterior edge height ratio, central height ratio and pain visual analogue score(VAS) were compared.
RESULTS:
All patients were followed up for 25 to 36 months. The operation time (70.1±17.3) min of the cement group was shorter than that of the screw group (78.6±18.2) min(P<0.05). There were no significant differences in intraoperative blood loss and length of hospital stay(P>0.05). The VAS in the cement group 1 year 1.5±0.5 and the latest follow-up 0.5±0.3 after operation were lower than 1 year 1.8±0.3 and the latest follow-up 0.8±0.4 in the screw group(P<0.05). The kyphosis Cobb angle, anterior edge height ratio, central height ratio in bone cement group, 1 year (6.2±1.2)°, (86.6±3.5)%, (91.1±2.5)%, the last follow-up (6.4±0.7)°, (85.5±3.3)%, (90.5±6.3)% were better than that of the screw group 1 year (6.8±1.4)°, (83.1±2.4)%, (89.9±3.4)% and the latest follow-up (7.1±1.1)°, (82.6±4.1)%, (87.6±5.9)%(P<0.05). There were 3 cases of bone cement leakage in the cement group, all of which had no clinical symptoms;and 2 cases of pedicle screws were extracted in the screw group, and the screws were removed at the last follow-up.
CONCLUSION
Percutaneous pedicle screw combined with unilateral nail placement combined with bone cement strengthening and bilateral nail placement in the treatment of osteoporotic thoracic and lumbar compression fractures in the elderly can achieve satisfactory efficacy and effectively relieve the pain of patients, but the former internal fixation system is more stable, and the long-term follow-up can effectively maintain the height of the anterior middle column and the correction of kyphosis deformity, and the incidence of chronic low back pain is lower.

BACKGROUND:Induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous is a minimally invasive,non-invasive and innovative method for the treatment of cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. After induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous, the research about whether cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc can maintain the original biomechanical strength has not been reported.OBJECTIVE:To measure the height of adjacent vertebral centroid of cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc before and after induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous operation to analyze the changes of the biomechanical strength of the intervertebral disc after reclining and to provide a new basis for induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous treatment of cervical and lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.METHODS:A retrospective analysis was performed on 140 patients with cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc herniation who received induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous surgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2013 to January 2023.Related software was used to measure the height of adjacent vertebral centroid of cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc of patients at each follow-up time point before and after induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous surgery in Magnetic Resonance Imaging image data under Artificial Intelligence-assisted calibration.Unoperated T1/T2 and T12/L1 segments were taken respectively as controls. Those with preoperative height of adjacent vertebral centroid less than 8%of the corresponding T1/T2 or T12/L1 control segment were in the"height reduction group"(hereafter referred to as group A)and the rest were in the"height unchanged group"(hereafter referred to as group B).The difference of height of adjacent vertebral centroid before and after operation between the group A and the group B was statistically analyzed.Simultaneously, the correlation between the volume of cervical and lumbar herniated discs and the changes of height of adjacent vertebral centroid was analyzed according to the result measured by artificial intelligence.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The study maintained a total of 140 patients, including 60 cases of cervical disc herniation and 80 cases of lumbar disc herniation. The postoperative follow-up period was 7 days to 12 months.(2)A total of 281 discs were measured in the cervical vertebra group, including 60 intervertebral discs in the control group. The mean value of height of adjacent vertebral centroid before and at the last postoperative follow-up was about 20.46 mm and 20.17 mm,respectively, with no statistical difference(P>0.05).There were 162 cervical discs in group A.The average height of adjacent vertebral centroid before and after operation was 16.65 mm and 15.92 mm,respectively, with no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).The mean cervical disc herniation volume before and after surgery was 510.28 mm3 and 364.76 mm3,respectively,which was not significantly correlated with height of adjacent vertebral centroid change(P>0.05).There were 64 discs in the group B,with average of 20.15 mm before operation and 19.09 mm at the last follow-up,and there was no significant difference(P>0.05).The mean volume of cervical disc herniation before and after surgery was 515.32 mm3 and 361.98 mm3,respectively,and there was no significant correlation with the change of height of adjacent vertebral centroid(P>0.05).(3)A total of 258 discs were measured in the lumbar spine group,of which 80 intervertebral discs in the control group, the average height of adjacent vertebral centroid was 33.03 mm before operation and 32.40 mm at the last follow-up,and there was no significant difference. There were 59 discs in the group A,and the average height of adjacent vertebral centroid before and after operation was 30.08 mm and 31.67 mm,respectively, with no statistically significant difference. The mean volume of lumbar disc herniation before and after operation was 690.51 mm3 and 496.58 mm3,respectively,and there was no significant correlation with the change of height of adjacent vertebral centroid(P>0.05).There were 119 discs in the group B,with an average height of adjacent vertebral centroid of 35.91 mm before surgery and 34.12 mm at the last follow-up.The mean volume of lumbar disc herniation before and after operation was 698.70 mm3 and 535.99 mm3,respectively,and there was no significant correlation with the change of height of adjacent vertebral centroid.(4)It is concluded that patients with cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc herniation can maintain the same intervertebral height level after induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous regardless of whether the intervertebral height has decreased before operation. It can be inferred that the resorption of the herniated disc does not affect its biomechanical strength. It suggests that induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous surgery should be performed before the intervertebral height of the degenerate segment has decreased. The induced resorption of herniated nucleus pulpous is more valuable to maintain the biomechanical strength of the resorptive disc.
