AIM: To investigate variation patterns of corneal biomechanical parameters and binocular symmetry among children of different genders aged 8-16 years.METHODS:A retrospective study was conducted, and children who underwent optometric examinations at the ophthalmology department of our hospital were enrolled between January 2022 and December 2024. Measurements included the flat keratometry(K1), steep keratometry(K2), and mean curvature(Km)of the anterior corneal surface, horizontal visible iris diameter(HVID), central corneal thickness(CCT), corneal endothelial cell density(CECD), average cell size(ACS), coefficient of variation(CV), and hexagonality(HEX). Corneal parameters and binocular differences were compared between genders and across age groups.RESULTS:A total of 621 children(1 242 eyes)were enrolled in this study, including 284 males(568 eyes), 337 females(674 eyes), 528 children aged 8-12 years(1 056 eyes), and 93 children aged 13-16 years(186 eyes). In children aged 8-16 years, the K1, K2, Km and CV of both eyes, as well as the interocular CCT differences in boys were significantly lower than those in girls(all P<0.05), while the HVID and HEX of both eyes, as well as the CCT of the left eye in boys were significantly higher than those in girls(all P<0.05). Children aged 8-12 years had significantly higher K1, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes, and significantly lower ACS in both eyes than those aged 13-16 years(all P<0.05). K1, K2, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes were negatively correlated with age(P<0.05); ACS in both eyes was positively correlated with age(P<0.001); K1 and Km of the right eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the right eye(P<0.05), and K1 and CCT of the left eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the left eye(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Significant gender differences exist in corneal parameters among children aged 8 to 16 years, while binocular symmetry remained stable.

Objective To investigate the prevalence and related factors of sarcopenia among non–bedridden older adults in the community of Baoshan District using the China mini sarcopenia risk assessment 7 (C-MSRA-7) combined with Ishii scoring system. Methods The older individuals consulting at 20 community health stations in Baoshan District between April 2025 and June 2025 were enrolled. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a dietary and lifestyle habits survey, the C-MSRA-7, and the mini nutritional assessment-short form (MNA-SF). Handgrip strength and anthropometric measurements were also obtained. Individuals with both Ishii score and C-MSRA-7 results positive were classified into the sarcopenia risk group, while the remaining participants were assigned to the non–sarcopenia risk group. Differences in lifestyle habits, dietary patterns, and nutritional status between the two groups were compared. Results A total of 2 611 valid questionnaires were retrieved. Univariate analysis showed statistically significant differences in alcohol consumption, physical activity frequency, body mass index (BMI), nutritional status, activities of daily living, and regularity of three meals in sarcopenia risk group (n=486) and non–sarcopenia risk group (n=2 125, P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that advanced age (75–84 years: OR=2.55, 95%CI 2.03–3.21; ≥85 years: OR=3.98, 95%CI 2.24–7.07), underweight status (OR=2.19, 95%CI 1.50–3.19), weight loss>2 kg (OR=4.52, 95%CI 2.68–7.64) past 3 months, lack of regular physical activity (OR=1.77, 95%CI 1.24–2.52) , and alcohol consumption (OR=1.48, 95%CI 1.07–2.05) were independent risk factors for sarcopenia (P<0.05). Behaviors related to healthy diet, including daily milk consumption (OR=0.40, 95%CI 0.30–0.52), regular three meals (OR=0.56, 95%CI 0.41–0.78), and high-quality protein intake (OR=0.70, 95%CI 0.52–0.94), were protective factors (P<0.05). Conclusions Sarcopenia among community–dwelling, non–bedridden older adults is closely associated with physical activity levels, dietary habits, and nutritional status. Early identification of individuals at risk, enhanced nutritional education, and timely implementation of nutritional interventions and exercise programs are recommended for this population.

Journal of China Pharmaceutical University 2025;56(5):583-591
To investigate the impact and underlying mechanism of NOP2/Sun RNA methyltransferase 2 (NSUN2) on gastric cancer progression, TCGA database was used and revealed a significant upregulation of NSUN2 expression in gastric cancer tissues. Western blot analysis revealed that NSUN2 was upregulated in gastric cancer cells compared with gastric mucosal epithelial cells. Colony formation assays demonstrated an enhanced colony-forming capacity in NSUN2-overexpressing cells. Furthermore, Transwell assays showed a marked increase in cell migration and invasion upon high NSUN2 expression. Moreover, TCGA database analysis suggested ARMC9 as a potential downstream target of NSUN2. Subsequently, MeRIP-qPCR analysis revealed that NSUN2 overexpression could increase m5C modification of ARMC9 mRNA, and reduce its degradation rate, thus enhancing protein expression. Additionally, ARMC9 overexpression augmented cellular colony formation and migratory and invasive capabilities. These findings indicate that NSUN2 promotes gastric cancer progression by elevating m5C modification of ARMC9 mRNA, increasing its stability and enhancing its expression, therefore, NSUN2 and ARMC9 may serve as potential therapeutic targets for gastric cancer.

Ferric oxide/nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterials(Fe2O3/N-C)with high oxidase-like activity were successfully synthesized via the wet chemistry and pyrolysis method using pyrrole and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid as raw materials and ferric chloride as the oxidant. The structure and morphology of Fe2O3/N-C were characterized by the techniques including scanning electron microscopy, surface scanning elemental analysis,X-ray diffraction,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was revealed that Fe2O3/N-C could efficiently catalyze the conversion of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB)into blue-colored oxidized TMB(oxTMB).Based on the principle that ascorbic acid(AA)could inhibit the catalytic color-development reaction of Fe2O3/N-C on TMB,resulting in a paler color and a reduction in the absorbance of the system,a colorimetric sensor for sensitive and accurate detection of AA was constructed. The linear range of the sensor for AA detection was 0.25-30.0 μmol/L,and the detection limit was 0.1 μmol/L.Moreover,it was successfully applied to determination of AA in beverage and tablet samples with satisfactory results.

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture combined with low-frequency electrical pulse in the treatment of neurogenic bladder (NB) caused by spinal cord injury (SCI); To explore its effects on urodynamics. Methods:A randomized controlled trial study was conducted. A total of 116 patients with NB caused by SCI in the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine from January 2022 to June 2024 were selected as the observation objects and divided into 2 groups with random number table method, with 58 cases in each group. On the basis of conventional bladder function training, the control group was given low-frequency electronic pulse therapy, while the observation group was treated with the Tongdu Tiaoshen method on the basis of the control group. Both groups were treated continuously for 3 months. The urination conditions of the patients were observed before and after the treatment respectively, and the residual urine volume, single urine volume within 24 hours, the number of urine leaks within 24 hours, and the number of urinations within 24 hours were recorded; urodynamic parameters such as bladder volume, urine flow rate, detrusor pressure, bladder compliance, and detrusor contractility were measured using a urodynamic analyzer; the severity of NB symptoms was evaluated using the Chinese version of the Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Scale (NBSS), and the quality of life was evaluated using the Chinese version of the Short Form Health Assessment Scale (SF-Qualiveen). The levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by ELISA. Adverse reactions were recorded during the treatment period and the clinical efficacy was evaluated. Results:The total effective rate was 91.38% (53/58) in the observation group and 75.86% (44/58) in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups ( χ2=5.10, P=0.024). After treatment, the residual urine volume, single urine volume within 24 hours, frequency of urine leakage within 24 hours, and frequency of urination within 24 hours in the observation group were lower than those in the control group ( t values were -15.68, 3.75, -3.81, and -7.54 respectively, P<0.01). The bladder capacity, urine flow rate, detrusor pressure, bladder compliance and detrusor contractility were higher than those of the control group ( t values were 11.04, 7.49, 9.76, 5.65 and 4.36 respectively, P<0.01), while the NBSS score and SF-Qualiveen score were lower than those of the control group ( t values were -10.82 and -9.83 respectively, P<0.01). No obvious adverse reactions occurred in either group during the treatment period. Conclusion:Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture combined with low-frequency electrical pulses can improve the bladder function of NB caused by SCI, restore urodynamics, and improve the quality of life.
