AIM: To investigate variation patterns of corneal biomechanical parameters and binocular symmetry among children of different genders aged 8-16 years.METHODS:A retrospective study was conducted, and children who underwent optometric examinations at the ophthalmology department of our hospital were enrolled between January 2022 and December 2024. Measurements included the flat keratometry(K1), steep keratometry(K2), and mean curvature(Km)of the anterior corneal surface, horizontal visible iris diameter(HVID), central corneal thickness(CCT), corneal endothelial cell density(CECD), average cell size(ACS), coefficient of variation(CV), and hexagonality(HEX). Corneal parameters and binocular differences were compared between genders and across age groups.RESULTS:A total of 621 children(1 242 eyes)were enrolled in this study, including 284 males(568 eyes), 337 females(674 eyes), 528 children aged 8-12 years(1 056 eyes), and 93 children aged 13-16 years(186 eyes). In children aged 8-16 years, the K1, K2, Km and CV of both eyes, as well as the interocular CCT differences in boys were significantly lower than those in girls(all P<0.05), while the HVID and HEX of both eyes, as well as the CCT of the left eye in boys were significantly higher than those in girls(all P<0.05). Children aged 8-12 years had significantly higher K1, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes, and significantly lower ACS in both eyes than those aged 13-16 years(all P<0.05). K1, K2, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes were negatively correlated with age(P<0.05); ACS in both eyes was positively correlated with age(P<0.001); K1 and Km of the right eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the right eye(P<0.05), and K1 and CCT of the left eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the left eye(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Significant gender differences exist in corneal parameters among children aged 8 to 16 years, while binocular symmetry remained stable.

Mandibular reconstruction refers to the restoration of the continuity of the mandible through techniques such as autologous bone grafting, thereby restoring the patient's basic appearance, reconstructing the occlusal relationship, and restoring functions such as opening the mouth, chewing, and swallowing,in order to achieve a unity of oral and maxillofacial forms and functions.Due to the fact that mastication necessitates the coordinated efforts of the masticatory muscles, mandible, dental arch, and tongue, the recovery of masticatory function not only serves as a robust indicator for the success of surgery but also enhances the patients'quality of life, facilitating an early return to normal life.Currently, for the rehabilitation of oral function in patients after mandibular reconstruction surgery, standardized tools have been established in the fields of swallowing, occlusion, and speech assessment, and targeted training has been implemented, yielding significant therapeutic outcomes. However, research related to masticatory function faces two major challenges.First, existing assessment tools primarily focus on a single dimension, such as masticatory efficiency or subjective perception, and an integrated assessment system that encompasses multiple dimensions, including bite force distribution and oral sensory perception, has not yet been established.Second, although individual studies have explored factors affecting postoperative masticatory function,a systematic consensus has not been veached, leading to a lack of precision and individualization in clinical interventions, which significantly prolongs the patients'rehabilitation period. This paper reviews the scope and limitations of existing assessment tools for masticatory function in patients after mandibular reconstruction and systematically analyzes the key factors affecting postoperative masticatory function, aiming to promote a shift in clinical practice from"structural reconstruction"to a"function-perception collaborative rehabilitation"approach, and to provide a theoretical framework for constructing evidence-based,personalized masticatory rehabilitation programs.

Objective:To investigate the detection status of serological markers for hepatitis B virus (HBV) among Tibetan college students and their relationship with HBV- deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) load. Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out to retrospectively analyze data from 1 514 Tibetan college students who visited the Affiliated Hospital of Xizang Minzu University for consultations or health examinations between June 1, 2021 and June 1, 2022. The prevalence of HBV infection among these students was analyzed, the primary epidemiological patterns of HBV markers were identified, and their relationship with HBV-DNA load was determined. Results:The positive rate of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among the 1 514 Tibetan college students was 6.7% (101/1 514), while the positive rate for Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) was 42.2% (639/1 514). The primary serological pattern of HBV infection consisted of positive results for HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBcAb, which accounted for 48.5% of cases. This pattern showed significantly higher rates of HBV-DNA positivity and elevated viral load compared with other serological patterns ( χ2 = 8.70, P < 0.05). Conclusions:The HBV infection rate among Tibetan college students is 6.7%. The primary infection pattern is characterized by positive tests for HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBcAb, with an HBV-DNA positivity rate as high as 87.0% and elevated viral loads.

BACKGROUND:The cryopreservation technology enables tissues/cells to be stored for a long time in a low-temperature environment while maintaining the integrity of their activity and function, which is of great significance for the construction of cell therapy, tissue engineering and biological sample banks.Cryoprotective agents often contain dimethyl sulfoxide and serum. To avoid the toxic side effects of dimethyl sulfoxide, the complexity of serum components and immune responses, although some finished cryoprotective agents have been marketed, they are faced with many difficulties such as high cost and limited application. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a cryoprotective agent with clear components and the ability to solve the above problems.OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of a novel cryoprotectant on cryopreservation efficiency of different tissue and cell sources.METHODS:By applying the novel cryoprotectant as an experimental group with the commercially available and widely used cryoprotectant(control group)to umbilical cord Wharton's jelly tissue, umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells, umbilical cord blood/peripheral blood mononuclear cells,NK and CIK cells, comparative analyses were conducted in terms of cell morphology, number, viability, surface markers, differentiation potential, and cell-killing toxicity assay before cryopreservation and after resuscitation thawing. We confirmed the cryopreservation effect of the new cryoprotectant and its potential application value.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The novel cryoprotectant facilitated the normal growth of cryopreserved Wharton's jelly tissue upon recovery, exhibiting mesenchymal stem cell morphology. No significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups in terms of cell recovery rate, surface markers, and differentiation potential.(2)There was no significant difference in the number and viability of cells between the experimental group and the control group after cryopreservation of cord blood/peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and the cryo-resuscitated cell numbers and viability of derived NK cells/CIK cells did not show significant difference between the experimental and control groups.(3)For NK cells derived and differentiated from cord blood/peripheral blood mononuclear cells, there was no significant difference in the proportion of CD56+CD16+cell subpopulations between the experimental group and the control group. For CIK cells derived and differentiated from cord blood/peripheral blood mononuclear cells, there was no significant difference in the proportions of CD3+CD8+and CD3+CD56+cell subpopulations between the experimental group and the control group.(4)In terms of cytotoxicity testing, when the effective-target ratio of immune cells and melanoma cell line Mel624 was 20:1,whether it was NK cells/CIK cells derived from cord blood or peripheral blood mononuclear cells, there was no significant difference in the tumoricidal activity of cells between the experimental group and the control group. These findings suggest that the novel cryoprotectant can replace existing commercially available and widely used cryoprotectants, and is applicable to Wharton's jelly tissue, umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells, umbilical cord blood/peripheral blood mononuclear cells,as well as NK and CIK cells, providing a solid technical foundation for the scaling, standardization, and commercialization of universal cryoprotectants.
