1.Parents' perceptions and experiences of physical activity in childhood cancer survivors in Singapore: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION:
The survival rate for childhood cancer has increased with advances in medical care. Along with this comes the growing burden of long-term side effects of cancer treatment and cancer survivorship. Childhood cancer survivors are more likely to be sedentary and have a lower quality of life. Physical activity (PA) can promote health and well-being in childhood cancer survivors, but few studies have explored the role of parents of childhood cancer survivors (PCCS) in promoting PA. This qualitative study aims to explore the perceptions of PCCS in Singapore and the role they may have with regard to PA.
METHODS:
Participants were recruited through a local charity via email, social media and posters. One-hour semi-structured interviews were conducted online with seven parents. With consent, the interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis.
RESULTS:
Our study discussed thematically parents' accounts on (1) the barriers and enablers of PA and (2) the complications of cancer that potentially affect the levels of PA in childhood cancer survivors. Parents reported that childhood cancer negatively affects the quality of life and participation in PA. The determinants of participation in PA were multifaceted, and socioecological and health belief models were used to demonstrate how these factors were interlinked.
CONCLUSION
Participation in PA is influenced at an individual, family, community and societal level. The improved understanding facilitated by this research can be used to shape paediatric cancer care practices in Singapore and guide institutional or national policy interventions.

2.Socioeconomic inequalities in health behaviours pre- and post-COVID-19 among Japanese school-aged adolescents: a nationally representative three-wave repeated cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND:
Changes in socioeconomic inequalities in health behaviours following the COVID-19 pandemic remain unknown, particularly among Japanese school-aged adolescents. Therefore, in this study, we examined changes in socioeconomic inequalities in school-aged adolescents' health behaviours, including physical activity (PA), screen time (ST), sleep duration, breakfast consumption, and bowel movement frequency, before and after the pandemic.
METHODS:
This three-wave repeated cross-sectional study utilised data from the 2019, 2021, and 2023 National Sports-Life Survey of Children and Young People in Japan, analysing data from 766, 725, and 604 participants aged 12-18 years, respectively. Favourable health behaviours were defined as moderate-to-vigorous PA of ≥60 min/day, ST <2 h/day, sleep duration of 8-10 h, daily breakfast consumption, and bowel movements at least every 3 days. Absolute and relative socioeconomic inequalities were quantified using the slope index of inequality (SII) and the relative index of inequality (RII). Temporal changes were analysed using quadratic trend analyses, employing interaction terms between socioeconomic status and survey year.
RESULTS:
Significant quadratic trends indicated that socioeconomic inequalities in breakfast consumption decreased substantially from 2019 (SII: 20.7%, RII: 5.09) to 2021 (SII: -0.1%, RII: 0.95) but resurged in 2023 (SII: 16.2%, RII: 3.70). This resurgence may have been primarily driven by changes among those in the moderately low-income (poverty level II) and higher-income groups, which had a breakfast consumption rate of 81.0, 87.0, and 76.4% in 2019, 2021, and 2023, and 88.7, 82.1, and 87.5%, respectively. Among low-income households, adherence to PA recommendations significantly declined from 18.6% to 5.3%, and ST adherence worsened over the study period. No significant inequalities or trends were observed for sleep duration or bowel movement frequency across survey years.
CONCLUSIONS
Socioeconomic disparities in breakfast consumption among Japanese school-aged adolescents resurfaced after initially narrowing during the pandemic, likely driven by changes in moderately low-income and higher-income groups. Among low-income households, adherence to PA and ST guidelines declined over time. However, at the population level, socioeconomic inequalities in PA did not exhibit a consistent trend of widening or narrowing. This study highlights the need for sustained public health initiatives to address these socioeconomic disparities.

3.Family eating and activity habits: a comparison of nutrition among nurses and non-health professionals in the Arab ethnic minority in Israel.

BACKGROUND:
Obesity and diabetes constitute significant health concerns within the Arab population in Israel. The study examines food literacy and self-assessed nutritional variables, which may explain family eating and activity habits among the Arab ethnic minority in Israel. The study examines these variables among professional nurses, who are expected to advocate for healthy behaviors within the population, compared to non-health professionals.
METHODS:
A cross-sectional study compared two groups: professional nurses and non-health professionals. A closed, structured self-report questionnaire (with five sub-sections) assessed food literacy, self-assessed nutrition, and family eating and activity habits. Data was collected between January and May 2022. A MANCOVA was used to compare the research variables among nurses and non-health professionals, and η2 was calculated as the effect size. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the variables explaining families' eating and activity habits. The model's significance and variance explained (R2) were calculated.
RESULTS:
The study included 213 Israeli Arab participants (103 nurses and 110 non-health professionals). Nurses showed poorer self-assessed nutrition and family eating/activity habits than non-health professionals. Regression analysis identified profession (β = -0.39, p < 0.001), gender (β = 0.22, p < 0.001), BMI (β = -0.22, p < 0.001), food literacy (β = 0.20 p < 0.001), and self-assessed nutrition (β = 0.30, p < 0.001) as significant predictors of family eating and activity habits. The model was significant (p < 0.001) and explained 38.0% of the variance.
CONCLUSION
Despite their health education background, Arab nurses reported suboptimal nutritional behaviors and unhealthy lifestyles that impact their family lifestyle practices, potentially hindering their health and limiting their effectiveness as health role models. Policymakers should develop ongoing nutrition health promotion programs tailored to the Arab nurses and Arab ethnic minority communities in Israel.

4.Association between 24-hour movement behaviors and psychological well-being in overweight and obese children.

OBJECTIVES:
The 24-hour movement behaviors, comprising physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep, are crucial factors affecting children's mental health. This study aims to explore the longitudinal association between 24-hour movement behaviors and psychological well-being in overweight and obese children, providing empirical evidence for mental health promotion in this population.
METHODS:
A total of 445 overweight and obese children were recruited via stratified cluster random sampling from a provincial capital city in China and followed up for one year. Measures included objectively assessed physical activity and sleep duration using triaxial accelerometers (ActiGraph GT3X+), parent-reported sedentary screen-based time (SST), and self-reported psychological well-being.
RESULTS:
After one year, the proportion of children meeting all 3 movement guidelines increased from 10.11% to 11.68%, while those meeting none increased from 11.24% to 15.06%. After adjusting for relevant covariates, children who met individual guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (β=0.377, 95% CI 0.209 to 0.545), sleep (β=0.187, 95% CI 0.042 to 0.332), or guideline combinations of MVPA+SST (β=0.545, 95% CI 0.377 to 0.713) and MVPA+sleep (β=0.602, 95% CI 0.449 to 0.755) showed significant improvements in psychological well-being after one year. Additionally, an increase in the number of guidelines met was significantly associated with improved well-being (β=0.113, 95% CI 0.011 to 0.214).
CONCLUSIONS
Adherence to any single movement guideline, especially MVPA or sleep, and combinations such as MVPA+SST or MVPA+sleep is significantly associated with enhanced psychological well-being in overweight and obese children. Integrated behaviors may be an effective strategy to improve mental well-being in this population.

5.Additional benefits of pelvic floor proprioceptive training combined with conventional therapy in the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVES:
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common condition among women that severely impairs quality of life. Pelvic floor proprioceptive training (PFPT) has attracted increasing attention for its potential to enhance pelvic floor muscle function and alleviate SUI symptoms. This study aims to observe and compare the clinical efficacy of PFPT combined with electroacupuncture, electrical stimulation, and biofeedback therapy versus conventional therapy consisting of electroacupuncture, electrical stimulation, and biofeedback alone in women with SUI, and to explore the role of PFPT in improving symptom and functional outcomes.
METHODS:
In this randomized controlled trial, 72 women with mild to moderate SUI were recruited from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, between December 2021 and October 2023. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=36) or a control group (n=36). Both groups received health education. The control group underwent electroacupuncture combined with electrical stimulation and biofeedback therapy, while the experimental group additionally received PFPT 3 times per week for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was assessed using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Secondary outcomes included pelvic floor muscle strength, bladder neck mobility, and balance ability. The ICIQ-SF was reassessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment.
RESULTS:
Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in all parameters after treatment (all P<0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences between groups in most measures (all P>0.05). The experimental group demonstrated longer single-leg stance duration with eyes closed than the control group (left leg: P=0.026; right leg: P=0.006), with a significant increase from baseline (P<0.001). At 6 months post-treatment, the cure rate in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P=0.037).
CONCLUSIONS
Conventional therapy effectively improves SUI symptoms, but adding PFPT provides notable additional benefits, including enhanced balance ability and sustained mid-term cure rates. These findings suggest that PFPT is a valuable adjunct to standard SUI management strategies.

6.Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Relationship Between Bedtime Procrastination and Fear of Missing Out and the Effect of Exercise Intervention.

Objective To explore the relationship between bedtime procrastination and fear of missing out and the intervention effect of aerobic exercise on bedtime procrastination,so as to provide a theoretical basis and practical reference for remedying bedtime procrastination.Methods Totally 988 students were selected through random sampling and then surveyed with the bedtime procrastination scale and the fear of missing out scale.Correlation and regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship between bedtime procrastination and fear of missing out.A total of 36 students were recruited from the 988 students to participate in the exercise intervention and they were assigned into an exercise group and a control group by the random number table method,with 18 students in each group.The exercise group performed aerobic exercise for 12 weeks,while the control group maintained daily activities.The participants' scores on the bedtime procrastination scale and the fear of missing out scale were recorded before and after the intervention and compared.Results The fear of missing out was positively correlated with bedtime procrastination among college students(r=0.214,P<0.001),and it was an important predictive factor for bedtime procrastination(β=0.241,P<0.001).After the intervention,the scores of bedtime procrastination scale decreased in the exercise group(t=2.277,P=0.036),while there was no significant difference in the scores of the control group before and after intervention(t=-0.787,P=0.442).Conclusions A high level of fear of missing out indicates severe bedtime procrastination.And 12-week exercise intervention could remedy bedtime procrastination.

7.Effects of Standard Tai Chi on Exercise Capacity and Mental Health in Exercise-Deprived Overweight/Obese Adults and Assessment of Participant Adherence.

OBJECTIVE:
To explore the effects of Tai Chi on body mass index (BMI), exercise capacity, and mental health of overweight/obese adults, and investigate factors influencing adherence to enhance adherence of Tai Chi as a sustainable exercise method.
METHODS:
A randomized, controlled, exploratory clinical trial was conducted paired with a qualitative study of adherence management. A total of 20 overweight/obese participants were randomly assigned to a standard Tai Chi group (experimental) and a simplified Tai Chi group (control) for an 8-week intervention, 10 patients in each group, with a 12-month follow-up. BMI was calculated and exercise capacity including an isokinetic muscle strength and balance ability test were evaluated. Mental health was assessed using the General Well-Being Schedule (GWB), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Coping Self Efficacy Scale (CSES) at baseline, 4th week, and 8th week, respectively. The qualitative research included open-interviews with Tai Chi practitioners and semi-structured interviews with subjects.
RESULTS:
The intervention was conducted in Haidian Park, Beijing, China from October 6, 2022, to January 1, 2023, without dropouts. After an 8-week intervention, the participants in the experimental group exhibited a significant decrease in BMI (P<0.05). Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in exercise capacity (P<0.05). The experimental group exhibited a significant enhancement in the GWB, PSQI and CSES (P<0.05). Only GWB had significant difference in the control group (P<0.05). The experimental group surpassed the control group in GWB and CSES (P<0.05). The adherence rate was 87.5% in the experimental group and 57.9% in the control group after 8 weeks intervention. Analysis on adherence identified 15 themes, the top 3 themes mentioned were as follows: mind-body effects, online and on-site guidance, training schedule (for subjects); mind-body effects, difficulties in practicing, and understanding of Tai Chi (for practitioners).
CONCLUSIONS
Both interventions were effective in improving exercise capacity. Tai Chi, integrating both physical and mental conditioning, reduced weight, improved exercise capacity and mental happiness, and increased adherence, providing a sustainable exercise program (ChiCTR2200063599).

8.When physical activity meets the physical environment: precision health insights from the intersection.

BACKGROUND:
The physical environment can facilitate or hinder physical activity. A challenge in promoting physical activity is ensuring that the physical environment is supportive and that these supports are appropriately tailored to the individual or group in question. Ideally, aspects of the environment that impact physical activity would be enhanced, but environmental changes take time, and identifying ways to provide more precision to physical activity recommendations might be helpful for specific individuals or groups. Therefore, moving beyond a "one size fits all" to a precision-based approach is critical.
MAIN BODY:
To this end, we considered 4 critical aspects of the physical environment that influence physical activity (walkability, green space, traffic-related air pollution, and heat) and how these aspects could enhance our ability to precisely guide physical activity. Strategies to increase physical activity could include optimizing design of the built environment or mitigating of some of the environmental impediments to activity through personalized or population-wide interventions.
CONCLUSIONS
Although at present non-personalized approaches may be more widespread than those tailored to one person's physical environment, targeting intrinsic personal elements (e.g., medical conditions, sex, age, socioeconomic status) has interesting potential to enhance the likelihood and ability of individuals to participate in physical activity.

9.Prehabilitation for gastrointestinal cancer patients.

Gastrointestinal cancer and related treatments (surgery and chemoradiotherapy) are associated with declined functional status (FS) that has impact on quality of life, clinical outcome and continuum of care. Psychological distress drives an impressive burden of physiological and psychiatric conditions in oncologic care. Cancer patients often experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and fears of recurrence and death. Cancer prehabilitation is a process from cancer diagnosis to the beginning of treatment, which includes psychological, physical and nutritional assessments for a baseline functional level, identification of comorbidity, and targeted interventions that improve patient's health and functional capacity to reduce the incidence and the severity of current and future impairments with cancer, chemoradiotherapy and surgery. Multimodal prehabilitation program encompasses a series of planned, structured, repeatable and purposive interventions including comprehensive physical exercise, nutritional therapy, and relieving anxiety and depression, which integrates into best perioperative management ERAS pathway and aims at using the preoperative period to prevent or attenuate the surgery-related functional decline, to cope with surgical stress and to improve the consequences. However, a number of questions remain in regards to prehabilitation in gastrointestinal cancer surgery, which consists of the optimal makeup of training programs, the timing and approach of the intervention, how to improve compliance, how to measure functional capacity, and how to make cost-effective analysis. Therefore, more high-level evidence-based studies are expected to evaluate the value of implementation of prehabilitation into standard practice.

10.Associations between screen time, physical activity, and depressive symptoms during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak among Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND:
The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) emerges in China, which spreads rapidly and becomes a public health emergency of international concern. Chinese government has promptly taken quarantine measures to block the transmission of the COVID-19, which may cause deleterious consequences on everyone's behaviors and psychological health. Few studies have examined the associations between behavioral and mental health in different endemic areas. This study aimed to describe screen time (ST), physical activity (PA), and depressive symptoms, as well as their associations among Chinese college students according to different epidemic areas.
METHODS:
The study design is cross-sectional using online survey, from 4 to 12 February 2020, 14,789 college students accomplished this online study, participants who did not complete the questionnaire were excluded, and finally this study included 11,787 college students from China.
RESULTS:
The average age of participants was 20.51 ± 1.88 years. 57.1% of the college students were male. In total, 25.9% of college students reported depression symptoms. ST > 4 h/day was positively correlated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.48, 95%CI 0.37-0.59). COVID-19ST > 1 h/day was positively correlated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.54, 95%CI 0.43-0.65), compared with COVID-19ST ≤ 0.5 h/day. Compared with PA ≥ 3 day/week, PA < 3 day/week was positively associated with depression symptoms (β = 0.01, 95%CI 0.008-0.012). Compared with low ST and high PA, there was an interaction association between high ST and low PA on depression (β = 0.31, 95%CI 0.26-0.36). Compared with low COVID-19ST and high PA, there was an interaction association between high COVID-19ST and low PA on depression (β = 0.37, 95%CI 0.32-0.43). There were also current residence areas differences.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings identified that high ST or low PA was positively associated with depressive symptoms independently, and there was also an interactive effect between ST and PA on depressive symptoms.
