Purpose: Methacholine bronchial provocation tests (MBPTs) are commonly used to assess airway hyperresponsiveness, but some patients show no significant response. This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of asthmatic patients based on their sensitivity to MBPTs. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study involving adult asthmatic patients from 6 university hospitals in South Korea. Patients were categorized into 2 groups: those with MBPT sensitivity (the provocative concentration of methacholine that leads to a 20% reduction in forced expiratory volume in 1 second [PC20]≤ 16 mg/mL) and those with lower sensitivity (PC 20 > 16 mg/mL). Clinical characteristics were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Among 346 patients, 213 had PC 20 ≤ 16 mg/mL and 133 had PC 20 > 16 mg/mL. The PC20> 16 mg/mL group had a higher prevalence of late-onset asthma (P= 0.024) and obesity (P= 0.045). While no significant differences in immunoglobulin E (≥ 200 IU/mL) were found, the PC 20 ≤ 16 mg/mL group had greater T2-high inflammation, such as elevated eosinophil counts and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (P< 0.001 and P= 0.004, respectively). Asthma exacerbations requiring emergency visits or hospitalizations were more frequent in the PC 20 > 16 mg/mL group, despite a lower proportion of patients on higher-step treatments according to Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines. Conclusion Asthmatic patients with PC 20 > 16 mg/mL tend to present with late-onset asthma, less T2-high inflammation, and higher rates of asthma exacerbations. Further studies are needed to clarify the clinical features of asthma patients with PC 20 > 16 mg/mL and assess the long-term significance of these findings.

This study investigated the plaque removal efficacy of a suction-type sonic toothbrush compared to a conventional manual toothbrush in preschool children aged 30 to 59 months. Using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design with a 2-week washout period, 20 pediatric participants were allocated to two study phases, each using either the suction-type sonic toothbrush or the manual toothbrush with caregiver assistance. The plaque removal effectiveness was assessed through the Silness and Löe plaque index and quantitative light-induced fluorescence values, including ΔR30 and ΔR120 indicators of plaque index. The result showed no statistically significant differences in plaque removal efficacy between the two toothbrushes, although both showed similar improvements. Caregiver feedback revealed high acceptability of the suction-type sonic toothbrush due to its convenience and engaging features, such as a light and suction function, which enhanced the tooth brushing experience. Although limited by the short follow-up period and small sample size, the findings suggest that suction-type sonic toothbrushes may offer practical benefits for young children requiring caregiver assistance.

Background: The life expectancy of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) has significantly improved with advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, aging PLWH face a growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), polypharmacy, and drug-drug interactions (DDIs), which pose challenges in their management. This study investigates the prevalence of NCDs, polypharmacy, and DDIs among PLWH aged ≥50 years in Korea and their impact on quality of life (QOL). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 243 PLWH aged ≥50 years receiving ART for at least three months at three university hospitals in Korea between January and July 2022. Data were collected through electronic medical records and personal interviews, assessing demographics, comorbidities, polypharmacy, ART adherence, and QOL using the Korean version of WHOQOL-HIV BREF scale. Potential DDIs were analyzed using the University of Liverpool HIV Drug Interaction Database, and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) were identified using the 2023 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria. We classified participants into three age groups:50–<65 years, 65–<75 years, and ≥75 years. Results: The prevalence of comorbidities was 71.6%, with older participants (≥75 years) showing a significantly higher burden, including bone diseases, osteoarthritis, and dementia (P<0.001). Polypharmacy was observed in 28.4% of participants and increased with age, with 53.3% of those aged ≥75 years taking ≥10 pills daily.Polypharmacy was associated with poorer QOL (71.6 vs. 76.6, P=0.010). Amber-flag DDIs were found in 81 participants (33.3%), most commonly involving metformin and divalent cations. No red-flag DDIs were identified.PIMs were observed in 6.6% of participants aged ≥65 years. Conclusion Aging PLWH in Korea face significant challenges from comorbidities, polypharmacy, and DDIs, which negatively impact QOL. Integrated, age-specific, and multidisciplinary care strategies are urgently needed to improve outcomes and ensure the well-being of older PLWH.

Following the previous study, which investigated the pharmacological properties of the Technekitty injection (Tc-99m), the toxicity of a single intravenous administration of the Technekittyinjection (Tc-99m) and the side effects that may occur at the diagnostic dose were confirmed.The Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) was administered intravenously once at a dose of 0, 0.67, 2.0, and 6.0 mCi/kg to 5 male and female rats per group. Mortality, general symptom obser-vation, and weight measurement were performed for 2 weeks, followed by observation of autopsy findings. There were no deaths, and no statistically significant weight change was observed. No abnormal systemic signs related to the Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) were observed. These results confirmed that Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) can be safely admin-istered intravenously at doses up to 6.0 mCi/kg. Additionally, technetium-99m at an average dose of 2 mCi (74 MBq) has been verified as a diagnostic dose without adverse effects, al-lowing the Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) to be used safely without side effects at this dosage.This study demonstrates that the Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) has a wide safety margin, supporting its potential for clinical application. Moreover, these findings align with the nonclin-ical safety standards for radiopharmaceuticals, reinforcing its utility in veterinary medicine.The Technekitty injection (Tc-99m) is expected to be applicable for clinical diagnosis as a vet-erinary drug in Korea.
