Purpose: In this case report, we examined the effects of an aquatic exercise program on respiratory and knee extensor muscle strength in a 72-year-old female patient with knee osteoarthritis and reduced respiratory muscle strength. Decreased respiratory muscle strength is linked to a diminished coughing capacity, which increases the risk of atelectasis and pneumonia, particularly in older individuals with limited physical activity. This study reports the effects of aquatic exercise on a patient with knee osteoarthritis and decreased respiratory muscle strength.  Methods: The patient participated in an 8-week aquatic exercise regimen, including walking in water at a depth above the fourth intercostal level, to achieve 60% of the predicted maximum heart rate. The pre- and post-intervention measurements included knee extension strength, grip strength, respiratory muscle pressure, vital capacity, and 6-meter walking speed.  Results: Improvements in expiratory muscle strength, bilateral knee extension strength, and walking speed were observed after the intervention.   Conclusions: Buoyancy of the aquatic environment minimizes joint load, whereas water viscosity provides resistance and enhances muscle strength without adverse effects. The increase in expiratory muscle strength suggests a potential training effect on the respiratory muscles owing to hydrostatic pressure resistance. These findings underscore the value of aquatic exercise in patients with musculoskeletal limitations and suggest its utility in maintaining respiratory function in older populations. Future research should explore long-term effects and include broader sample sizes to validate these outcomes.

Purpose: This study was performed to assess and describe the imaging features of 40 cases of Stafne bone defects (SBDs) on computed tomographic (CT) examinations. Materials and Methods: This study collected data, including age and sex, from 40 patients with SBDs who underwent CT exams. The imaging features of the SBDs were assessed in terms of their location, average size, the relationship of their contour with the cortical plate of the lingual mandible, bone margins, degree of internal density, shape, topographic relationship between the defect and the mandibular edge, the distance from the SBD to the base of the mandible, and the Ariji classification (type I, II, and III). Results: The average age was 57.3 years (range, 28-78 years), and the patients were predominantly male (70%). In all cases (100%), the posterior unilateral lingual SBD variant was observed. Within the Ariji classification, type I was the most common (60%). Among the most frequently observed radiographic characteristics were thick sclerotic bone margin across the entire defect contour, completely hypointense internal content, an oval shape, and continuity with the mandibular base with discontinuity of the mandibular edge. Conclusion This study showed that posterior SBDs could present with an oval or rounded shape, complete hypodensity, and thick sclerotic margins. Likewise, SBDs could appear almost anywhere, with minor differences from the classic SBD appearance. It is fundamental for dental practitioners to know the imaging features of SBDs, since they are diagnosed primarily based on imaging.

We examined the relationship between masticatory ability and bone mineral density (BMD) and the role of muscle strength in those relationships in 156 female university students. Masticatory ability was assessed using a color-changeable chewing gum method. The BMD of the calcaneus was measured using quantitative ultrasonography and represented by a T-score, the standard deviation (SD) from the mean BMD of young adults. Body composition, grip strength, physical activity level, and daily nutrient intake were also assessed. Osteopenia, defined as the T-score < ‒1.0 SD, was present in 43 participants (27.6%). There was no significant relationship between masticatory ability (ΔE) and T-score in all participants. In participants with normal BMD (T-score ≧ ‒1.0 SD: the normal BMD group), masticatory ability significantly correlated to BMD (r = 0.289, p = 0.002). There was significant correlation between ΔE and grip strength neither in all participants nor in either group, although the grip strength in the normal BMD group was greater than that in the participants with osteopenia (the low BMD group) (p = 0.039). Physical activity level was positively correlated to the total daily energy intake (r = 0.193, p = 0.041) only in the normal BMD group. The present results suggest that masticatory ability is associated with BMD in young females with normal BMD, but the role of muscle strength in those relationships remains unclear. Meanwhile, there was no relationship between masticatory ability and BMD in young individuals with lower BMD.
