ObjectiveTo investigate the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) in the spatial pattern of Pseudostellaria heterophylla production regions and reveal the impact of statistical scales on the spatial distribution characteristics of this medicinal plant species. MethodsUsing multi-source data (literature records, field surveys, and statistical data), we systematically analyzed the spatial patterns across three administrative levels (provincial, prefectural, and county scales). Spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) analysis, high-low clustering (Getis-Ord General G), and hot/cold spot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi*) were employed. ResultsThe literature-based analysis showed that the production regions of P. heterophylla presented random distribution on the provincial scale and significant aggregation on the prefectural scale. The field survey data showed that the production regions displayed random distribution on the provincial scale but significant aggregation on both prefectural and county scales. The statistical data revealed that the production regions lacked spatial autocorrelation on the provincial scale but demonstrated significant aggregation on prefectural and county scales. ConclusionMAUP effects have substantive implications for understanding and decision-making in the arrangement of medicinal plant production regions. The county scale proves to be the most sensitive and explanatory level for analyzing the spatial pattern of P. heterophylla production regions, providing a critical foundation for habitat modeling, suitability evaluation, and ecological cultivation planning of medicinal plants.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2025;38(10):1179-1193
OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to explore the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality based on the 10-year population-based multicenter prospective study.
METHODS:
A general population-based multicenter prospective study was conducted at four sites in rural China between 2013 and 2023. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to assess the association between BMI and mortality. Stratified analyses were performed based on the individual characteristics of the participants.
RESULTS:
Overall, 19,107 participants with a sum of 163,095 person-years were included and 1,910 participants died. The underweight (< 18.5 kg/m 2) presented an increase in all-cause mortality (adjusted hazards ratio [ aHR] = 2.00, 95% confidence interval [ CI]: 1.66-2.41), while overweight (≥ 24.0 to < 28.0 kg/m 2) and obesity (≥ 28.0 kg/m 2) presented a decrease with an aHR of 0.61 (95% CI: 0.52-0.73) and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.37-0.70), respectively. Overweight ( aHR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.67-0.86) and mild obesity ( aHR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59-0.87) had a positive impact on mortality in people older than 60 years. All-cause mortality decreased rapidly until reaching a BMI of 25.7 kg/m 2 ( aHR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.98) and increased slightly above that value, indicating a U-shaped association. The beneficial impact of being overweight on mortality was robust in most subgroups and sensitivity analyses.
CONCLUSION
This study provides additional evidence that overweight and mild obesity may be inversely related to the risk of death in individuals older than 60 years. Therefore, it is essential to consider age differences when formulating health and weight management strategies.

As a serine protease, thrombin can convert soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin and plays a pivotal role in the coagulation cascade. Therefore, the accurate quantitative assay of thrombin levels is of great value in the evaluation of coagulation function, clinical screening and prognostic monitoring of coagulation-related diseases, and screening of drugs for targeted therapy.Existing methods for thrombin detection can be divided into two categories,e.g.,the assay of concentration levels using nucleic acid aptamers as the affinity elements and the assay of activity levels based on the hydrolytic cleavage of substrate peptides. In recent years, electrochemical biosensors have attracted much attention in thrombin detection due to high sensitivity, high selectivity, simple instrument, fast response, and good portability. In this review, the latest research progress in methods for electrochemical detection of thrombin was summarized, focusing on the detection principles and the applied signal amplification strategies of related electrochemical biosensors. In addition, the challenges with respect to the practical use of electrochemical thrombin biosensors and the prospects were discussed.

OBJECTIVE:
To detect and analyze the expression and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA tyrosine kinase non-catalytic region adaptor protein 1-antisense RNA1 (NCK1-AS1) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
METHODS:
89 AML patients and 23 healthy controls were included from the People's Hospital Affiliated to Jiangsu University. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the expression levels of NCK1-AS1 and NCK1 in bone marrow samples. The relationship between the expression of NCK1-AS1 and the clinical characteristics of patients were analyzed, as well as the correlation between NCK1-AS1 and NCK1.
RESULTS:
The expression level of NCK1-AS1 in all AML, non-M3 AML and cytogenetically normal AML (CN-AML) patients was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively). In non-M3 AML, patients with high NCK1-AS1 expression had a significantly lower hemoglobin level than those with low NCK1-AS1 expression (P =0.036), furthermore, NCK1-AS1 high patients had shorter overall survival than NCK1-AS1low patients (P =0.0378). Multivariate analysis showed that NCK1-AS1 expression was an independent adverse factor in patients with non-M3 AML ( HR =2.392, 95% CI :1.089-5.255, P =0.030). In addition, NCK1 expression was also significantly upregulated in all AML, non-M3 AML and CN-AML patients compared with controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.001, respectively). There was a certain correlation between NCK1-AS1 and NCK1 expression (r =0.37, P =0.0058).
CONCLUSION
High expression of NCK1-AS1 in AML indicates poor prognosis of AML patients.

As a long-standing research focus in electroanalytic chemistry, electrochemical biosensors have attracted immense interest in detection of biological targets such as small molecules, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, exosomes, circulating tumor cells (CTCs),bacteria, and viruses. etc. The highly sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of biological targets relies on the use of the specific biorecognition elements (BREs) and efficient signal amplification strategies. In this review, the typically used BREs and amplification strategies in electrochemical biosensing were summarized. On the basis of the interactions between BREs and targets, the enzyme/substrate-based and receptor/ligand-based electrochemical biosensors were first introduced, focusing on the BREs used in the electrochemical detection of nucleic acid targets and non-nucleic acid targets. Then, the representative use of various isothermal nucleic acid amplification technologies, catalytic reactions, functionalized nanocarriers, and polymer materials in amplified electrochemical detection of biological targets were introduced. The challenges with respect to the practical use of electrochemical biosensors and the prospect of electrochemical biosensing were discussed.

The quantitative detection of glucose is vital for human health monitoring and chronic disease management. At present, the method for glucose detection is mainly based on glucose oxidase(GOx)with simpleness, accessibility, and easy observation. However, the target signals are usually recorded on large and expensive instruments(such as a biochemical analyzer or microplate reader),and analyzed by skilled professionals, which limits the widespread use of such methods in poor areas and densely populated cities.Herein,a ferriferous oxide(Fe3O4)nanozyme-assisted colorimetry method was developed for determination of glucose in serum.Specifically, glucose was catalyzed by GOx to produce hydrogen peroxide(H2O2),and then the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB)substrate was oxidized by H2O2 with the assistance of peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4,resulting in blue product.Afterward, the colorimetric signals were measured by a smartphone-based intelligent device with automated data analysis function. The linear response range obtained from this method was 1-30 mmol/L,and the limit of detection(LOD)was 0.366 mmol/L.The method was applied to detection of clinical serum samples(n=20),and the detection results of this device were in good agreement with those by a microplate reader and provided by hospital. The prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles possessed advantages including high catalytic activity, good stability, easy separation, and repetitive utilization.Taken together, smartphones owned simple operation, excellent image acquisition, data analysis, and easy integration, and benefiting from that,a promising platform for detection of glucose was developed with low lost.
