1.Nursing Students’ Perceptions and Educational Needs Related to Spiritual Care: An Exploratory Study

As holistic care gains prominence in nursing, spiritual care has emerged as a core dimension of patient-centered practice. However, undergraduate nursing curricula in South Korea have not sufficiently incorporated spiritual care education. This study examined nursing students’ perceptions, experiences, and educational needs regarding spiritual care using a mixed-methods approach. A total of 254 junior and senior nursing students completed an online survey assessing their educational experiences, perceived necessity of spiritual care, and levels of understanding and practice. To complement these findings, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven students from a Christian nursing college. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency analysis, the t-test, the chi-square test, and Pearson correlation coefficients, whereas qualitative data were thematically analyzed based on Giorgi’s phenomenological method. Results showed that more than half of participants had never received formal education on spiritual care, yet most recognized its importance and expressed strong preferences for required coursework and experiential learning. Students perceived spiritual care not solely as religious or end-of-life support but as empathetic, emotionally attuned care applicable across diverse clinical settings. Integration of structured and experiential approaches, such as role-play and simulation, was consistently emphasized. These findings highlight a significant gap between current curricula and clinical expectations, underscoring the urgent need for systematic integration of spiritual care education to strengthen holistic and patient-centered nursing competencies.
2.Clinical Implication of Candida Score in Multidrug-Resistant Pneumonia with Airway Candida Colonization

Background:
The growth of Candida in respiratory secretions is usually considered colonization, and antifungal therapy is rarely required. The role of Candida colonization in the progression of bacterial pneumonia remains controversial. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical implication of Candida score by analyzinge the relationship with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pneumonia and prognosis in patients with airway Candida colonization.
Materials and Methods:
This study was a retrospective review of patients with airway Candida colonization by bronchial washing or bronchoalveolar lavage. The Candidascore was calculated according to the four factors (severe sepsis, surgery at baseline, total parenteral nutrition, and multifocal Candida colonization). Pneumonia related mortality or hopeless discharge expecting death was defined as a poor outcome.
Results:
A total of 148 patients were enrolled in the study. In a multivariate analysis model, Candida score was identified as an independent predictor of poor outcomes (odds ratio 2.23;95% confidential interval 1.57 – 3.17; P<0.001) in pneumonia patients with airway Candida colonization. With a Candida score of three or higher compared with low score group, it was associated with bacterial pneumonia, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection (0.0% vs. 15.2%, P = 0.004). In addition, patients with a high Candida score had a longer hospital stay (13 vs. 38 days, P <0.001), longer duration of intensive care (7 vs.18 days, P <0.001), and higher pneumonia-related mortality (0.0% vs. 45.5%,P <0.001) as compared to the low Candida score group. The Candida score showed a positive correlation with other pneumonia severity scales such as CURB-65 (Confusion, Urea, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, and age ≥65 years) (r = 0.461, P <0.001), Pneumonia Severity Index (r = 0.397, P <0.001), and predisposition, insult, response, and organ dysfunction (PIRO) score (r = 0.425, P <0.001).
Conclusion
This study revealed that Candida is no longer a bystander of airway colonization, and that it affects the progression of bacterial pneumonia, including multidrug-resistant pathogens, particularly MRSA infection. Also Candida score can be used to predict the prognosis of patients with pneumonia.
3.Factors for Completing Case Management of Suicide Attempters: A Coihort Follow-Up Study Based on Data From Case Management of Emergency Room-Based Suicide Attempters

Objectives:
:The purpose of this study was to find out how demographic factors, suicide attempt patterns, psychiatric history and management of suicide attempters affect the completion of emergency department (ED) based case management program.
Methods:
:Among the patients who attempted suicide and visited the emergency department of Chung-Ang University Hospital from June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2021, 661 patients who agreed to case management were studied. After being discharged from the emergency department, subjects were registered for an eight-week follow-up service program. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted with demographic factors, suicide attempt patterns, psychiatric history and management as independent variables, and completion of case program as dependent variables.
Results:
:Suicide attempt pattern had the most significant influence on the completion of case management program, followed by demographic factors, psychiatric history and management. Those who completed the case management program were significantly more likely to have suicide plans in the future, more authentic in sui-cide attempts, and had higher proportion of past suicide attempts than those who did not complete the program.
Conclusions
:To ensure that the subjects complete the follow-up project program and get connected to community services, an individualized approach with consideration of suicide attempt patterns, demographic factors, and psychiatric history is needed.
4.Cumulative Exposure to Metabolic Syndrome Components and the Risk of Dementia: A Nationwide Population-Based Study

Metabolic disturbances are modifiable risk factors for dementia. Because the status of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components changes over time, we aimed to investigate the association of the cumulative exposure to MetS and its components with the risk of dementia.
Methods:
Adults (n=1,492,776; ≥45-years-old) who received health examinations for 4 consecutive years were identified from a nationwide population-based cohort in Korea. Two exposure-weighted scores were calculated: cumulative number of MetS diagnoses (MetS exposure score, range of 0 to 4) and the composite of its five components (MetS component exposure score, range of 0 to 20). Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) values for dementia were analyzed using the multivariable Cox proportional-hazards model.
Results:
Overall, 47.1% of subjects were diagnosed with MetS at least once, and 11.5% had persistent MetS. During the mean 5.2 years of follow-up, there were 7,341 cases (0.5%) of incident dementia. There was a stepwise increase in the risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and vascular dementia with increasing MetS exposure score and MetS component exposure score (each P for trend <0.0001). The HR of all-cause dementia was 2.62 (95% CI, 1.87 to 3.68) in subjects with a MetS component exposure score of 20 compared with those with a score of 0. People fulfilling only one MetS component out of 20 already had an approximately 40% increased risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Conclusion
More cumulative exposure to metabolic disturbances was associated with a higher risk of dementia. Of note, even minimal exposure to MetS components had a significant effect on the risk of dementia.

6.Investigation of the association between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction in the South Korean population

OBJECTIVE:
This study investigated the relationship between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in South Korean population.
METHODS:
This study obtained data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The final sample size was 5,567 participants who were ≥ 19 years of age. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD.
RESULTS:
Participants who underwent orthodontic treatment showed higher educational level, lower body mass index, reduced chewing difficulty, and reduced speaking difficulty. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for orthodontic treatment and TMD were 1.614 (1.189–2.190), 1.573 (1.162–2.129) and 1.612 (1.182–2.196) after adjusting for age, sex and psychosocial factors. Adjusted ORs and their 95% CIs for orthodontic treatment and clicking were 1.778 (1.289–2.454), 1.742 (1.265–2.400) and 1.770 (1.280–2.449) after adjusting for confounding factors. However, temporomandibular joint pain and functional impairment was not associated with orthodontic treatment.
CONCLUSIONS
Temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction was not associated with orthodontic treatment.
7.Impact of Cytomegalovirus Disease on New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Population-Based Matched Case-Control Cohort Study

BACKGROUND: A latent cytomegalovirus (CMV) cause chronic inflammation through undesirable inflation of cell-mediated immune response. CMV immunoglobulin G has been associated with cardiovascular disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus. We evaluated impact of CMV diseases on new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).METHODS: From the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service claim database of entire population with 50 million, we retrieved 576 adult case group with CMV diseases diagnosed with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related-Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) B25 code between 2010 and 2014 after exclusion of patients with T2DM to 2006. The 2,880 control patients without T2DM from 2006 to cohort entry point were selected between 2010 and 2014 by age, sex matching with case group. The subjects without new-onset T2DM were followed until 2015. T2DM, hypertension (HTN), dyslipidemia (DYS), and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) were coded as ICD-10.RESULTS: The frequency of new-onset T2DM in case group was significantly higher than that in control (5.6% vs. 2.2%, P<0.001). The group with T2DM (n=95) had higher incidence of CMV diseases than the group without T2DM (n=3,361) (33.7% vs. 16.2%, P<0.001). In multivariate regression model adjusted by age, sex, lower income, HTN, and DYS, the incidence rate (IR) of T2DM in case group was significantly higher than that in the control group (IR per 1,000, 19.0 vs. 7.3; odds ratio, 2.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.3 to 3.2). The co-existence of HTN, DYS, and ESRD with CMV diseases did not influence the IR of T2DM.CONCLUSION: CMV diseases increase the patients' risk of developing T2DM.

The purpose of this study is to propose learning objectives in social dental hygiene by analyzing and reviewing learning objectives in oral health administration area of the existing public oral health. This study is a cross-sectional study. The subjects of the study selected with convenience extraction were 15 members of the social dental hygiene subcommittee of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene Science. Data collection was conducted by self-filling questionnaire. The research tool is from 48 items of A division in the book of learning objectives in the dental hygienist national examination, and this study classified each of them into ‘dental hygiene job relevance’, ‘dental hygiene competency relevance’, ‘timeliness’, and ‘value discrimination of educational goal setting’ to comprise 192 items. Also, to collect expert opinions, this study conducted Delphi survey on 7 academic experts. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0 program (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). Recoding was performed according to the degree of relevance of each learning objective and frequency analysis was performed. This study removed 18 items from the whole learning objectives in the dental hygienist national examination in the oral health administration area of public oral health. Fifteen revisions were made and 15 existing learning objectives were maintained. Forty-five learning objectives were proposed as new social dental hygiene learning objectives. The topics of learning objectives are divided into social security and medical assistance, oral health care system, oral health administration, and oral health policy. As a result of this study, it was necessary to construct the learning objectives of social dental hygiene in response to changing situation at the time. The contents of education should be revised in order of revision of learning objectives, development of competency, development of learning materials, and national examination.

10.Soluble CD93 in Serum as a Marker of Allergic Inflammation.

PURPOSE: CD93 is receiving renewed attention as a biomarker of inflammation. We aimed to evaluate the potential for serum sCD93 to serve as a novel biomarker for allergic inflammation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 348 subjects with an allergic disease [allergic rhinitis (AR), chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), or bronchial asthma (BA)], including 14 steroid-naïve BA patients who were serially followed-up. RESULTS: The serum sCD93 levels (ng/mL) in patients with exacerbated AR (mean±standard deviation, 153.1±58.4) were significantly higher than in patients without AR (132.2±49.0) or with stable AR (122.3±42.1). Serum sCD93 levels in exacerbated CSU (169.5±42.8) were also significantly higher than those in non-CSU (132.4±51.6) and stable CSU (122.8±36.2). This trend was also seen in BA. Serum levels in patients with ICS-naïve BA (161.4±53.1) were significantly higher than those in healthy controls without BA (112.2±30.8), low- and medium-dose ICS users. Serum sCD93 levels in high-dose ICS users (72.2±20.6) were significantly lower than those in low- and medium-dose users. The serum sCD93 levels in steroid-naïve patients with BA (195.1±72.7) decreased after ICS use for 4 weeks (134.4±42.8) and 8 weeks (100.7±13.4), serially. CONCLUSION: Elevated serum sCD93 levels reflected exacerbated status of allergic diseases, including CSU, AR, and asthma. ICS use significantly diminished serum sCD93 levels in steroid-naïve patients with BA. This result may suggest sCD93 in serum as a therapeutic marker for allergic inflammation.
