1.Application and Effects of a Digital Multimedia-Based Educational Intervention for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors:A Quasi-Experimental Study

Purpose:
This study aimed to develop a digital multimedia-based educational intervention for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) donors and to evaluate its effects on anxiety, knowledge, attitudes toward hematopoietic stem cell donation, and educational satisfaction.
Methods:
This quasi-experimental study employed a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized pretest-posttest design. Participants were 60 HSC donors admitted to a general hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea, between April and December 2024. The participants were assigned to an experimental group (n=30) and a control group (n=30). The experimental group received a digital multimediabased educational intervention in addition to the usual education using a standardized handout, whereas the control group received the usual education only. The intervention was provided in three sessions: on the day of admission (20 minutes), on the day of stem cell collection (10 minutes), and on the day of discharge (10 minutes). Data were collected at admission and discharge using structured questionnaires. Anxiety was analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE), knowledge and attitudes using mixed ANOVA, and educational satisfaction using an independent t-test.
Results:
The experimental group showed significantly lower anxiety (p=.048) and higher knowledge levels (p=.005) than the control group. No significant differences were found between the groups in attitudes toward donation or educational satisfaction.
Conclusion
The digital multimedia-based educational intervention was effective in reducing anxiety and improving knowledge among HSC donors. This intervention may enhance donors’ understanding of the donation process and support a more positive donation experience. Further multicenter studies with larger samples and longitudinal follow-up measurements are needed to verify the long-term effects and generalizability of the intervention.
2.Development of Hydrogel Sun Patch with Wound Healing Efficacy

Background:
This study focuses on the development of a hydrogel wound patch incorporating natural extracts, designed to function as a sun patch. By maintaining a moist environment and delivering bioactive compounds, the patch promotes wound healing while also providing cooling and ultraviolet (UV) protection. This dual-purpose approach enhances skin recovery and shields damaged areas from external stressors. The study aims to optimize the formulation and evaluate its efficacy for both therapeutic and cosmetic applications.
Methods:
Hydrogel solutions prepared using acrylamide, glycerol, and carboxymethyl cellulose were enriched with extracts from Saururus chinensis, Styrax japonicus, and Centella asiatica. The enriched solutions were processed into patches and tested for their adhesion, cooling effects, and UV protective abilities. Additionally, the wound healing efficacy was evaluated in a mouse model.
Results:
The hydrogel patches demonstrated comparable adhesion properties, effective skin cooling, and high UV protection rates similar to those of commercially available products. In the mouse model, the patches significantly improved wound closure and tissue regeneration in the experimental group as compared to the control group.
Conclusion
The study confirms that hydrogel sun patches enriched with natural extracts have the ability to effectively promote wound healing and offer substantial UV protection and cooling benefits, demonstrating their potential medical and cosmetic applications.
3.Antler abnormalities with testicular atrophy in a wild roe deer (Capreolus pygargus): a case report

Deer antlers are regenerate annually under hormonal control, particularly testosterone. Here, we report a case of antler deformity associated with testicular atrophy in a wild roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) in South Korea. Both antlers were abnormally enlarged and entangled in agricultural netting. Gross and histopathological examination revealed severe testicular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, and hindlimb muscle necrosis. Serum testosterone was extremely low (0.032 ng/mL). These findings explain the abnormal antler growth and suggest susceptibility to capture myopathy due to hormonal imbalance. This is the first documented case in South Korea linking antler abnormalities to testicular atrophy in wild roe deer, highlighting the impact of endocrine disruption on cervid health.
4.Tumors in pet hamsters in Korea: a retrospective study of 80 cases (2017–2023)

This study analyzed 80 biopsy specimens from pet hamsters in South Korea, focusing on naturally occurring tumors, particularly integumentary tumors. Tumors were most commonly found in the integumentary system (71.3%), followed by the reproductive (16.3%) and hematopoietic systems. In Djungarian hamsters, cutaneous atypical fibroma (27.8%) was the most frequent integumentary tumor, with the abdomen being the most affected site (42.6%). These findings highlight the importance of monitoring common neoplastic sites for better clinical management and preventative care, ultimately improving the health and longevity of pet hamsters.
5.Differentiation between Hypovolemic Shock and Septic Shock in Patients with Unstable Vital Signs after Cesarean Section: A Case Report

Hypovolemic shock and septic shock present similar symptoms, such as increased heart rate and decreased blood pressure. However, the two conditions have different causes, mechanisms, and treatment approaches. Early differentiation between the two conditions can have a positive impact on patient prognosis. In this case, the patient underwent a right ovarian cystectomy due to a teratoma torsion during a previous pregnancy, followed by treatment for a postoperative infection. While recovering, the patient underwent an emergency cesarean section due to sudden severe abdominal pain. After the surgery, unstable vital signs were suggestive of hypovolemia due to massive bleeding from the cesarean section. Therefore, fluid infusion and blood transfusion were initiated. The vital signs did not improve. So, the patient was reassessed. Body temperature and the previously elevated C-reactive protein levels were remeasured. The results of the reassessment indicated a septic condition due to previous infection. The patient was prescribed additional vasopressors and antibiotics for the following week. Subsequently, the patient’s vital signs stabilized, and the treatment was discontinued.

7.Robotic surgeries in pediatric patients: an early experience in a single center

Purpose:
Robotic surgery (RS) has the advantages of 3-dimensional view, optical magnification, motional scaling, and improved ergonomics and degree of freedom. Although RS has widely been performed on pediatric patients lately, there are still numerous restrictions and ambiguous indications. The purpose of this study was to report our early experience with RS on pediatric patients at a single center.
Methods:
Electronic medical records of patients who underwent RS with the da Vinci Xi surgical platform (Intuitive Surgical, Inc.) in Seoul National University Children Hospital from November 2019 to August 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. The median follow-up was 21.0 months (range, 12.3–31.8 months). An online survey was conducted to investigate satisfaction with robotic surgical scars.
Results:
Fifty-four patients underwent robotic surgeries (median age at operation, 11.1 years [range, 0.1–17.8 years]). In our hospital, patients had 20 different kinds of robotic surgeries, including choledochal cyst excision with hepaticojejunostomy, ovarian mass excision, and others. Median operation time and console time were 157.5 minutes (range, 45–505 minutes) and 40 minutes (range, 11–360 minutes), respectively. All cases were done without conversion into open or laparoscopic methods. Postoperative complications were found in 5 patients. According to an online survey, over half of patients (60.9%) answered that they felt satisfied with scars.
Conclusion
Our early experience demonstrated the safety and feasibility of RS in children with a range of diagnoses and complicated procedures. With more experience, RS could be an alternative to traditional open or laparoscopic operations in pediatric patients. Further studies are needed to clarify indications of pediatric RS.
8.Evaluation of Silicone-Based Gel for the Treatment of Hypertrophic Scarring in Rat Models

Background:
Hypertrophic scarring represents an aberrant response to wounds in certain individuals, manifesting with symptoms such as itching, tenderness, pain, and pigmentation. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a silicone-based gel on the healing of hypertrophic scars, particularly those originating from deep tissue wounds.
Methods:
A rat model of wound healing and scarring was established, and 12 rats were randomly assigned to three groups: Dermatix Ultra group, SFG-100 silicone-gel group, and non-treated group. Rats in the treated groups (Dermatix Ultra and SFG-100 silicone-gel) received twice-daily applications for 8 weeks. Histologic analysis, including biopsy, was conducted to evaluate the scar elevation index, epidermis thickness, and the number of granulation veins.
Results:
Overall, both the Dermatix Ultra and SFG-100 silicone-gel groups exhibited improvements in hypertrophic scar healing, accompanied by a significant reduction in skin pigmentation. Histopathologically, scars in both treated groups displayed a notable decrease in scar elevation index, epithelial thickness, and collagen disorganization compared to the non-treated group. However, no significant difference was observed between the Dermatix Ultra and SFG-100 silicone-gel groups.
Conclusion
The results suggest that SFG-100 silicone-gel is an effective therapeutic agent for hypertrophic scars. Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying its efficacy and to optimize its application for clinical use.
