Objective:To evaluate the association between heatwaves and fall-related mortality. Methods:A total of 61 421 fall-related mortality from 2013 to 2022 in 7 provinces of China were included in a time-stratified case-crossover design, with daily meteorological data derived from the fifth generation European Reanalysis dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Conditional logistic regression chimeric distributed lag nonlinear model was used to analyze the association between heatwaves and fall-related mortality and stratified analysis was conducted according to gender and age. Results:Heatwaves were associated with an increased risk of fall-related morality. The risk of fall-related mortality during heatwaves was higher than during non-heatwave periods ( OR=1.11, 95% CI: 1.05-1.18). The attributable fraction of fall-related motality due to heatwaves was 10.25% (95% CI: 4.49%-15.36%). For each 1 ℃ increase above the heatwave threshold, the risk of fall-related mortality increased by 34% ( OR=1.34, 95% CI: 1.02-1.76). The effect of heatwave duration on fall-related mortality was not statistically significant. Stratified analyses indicated that women experienced a higher risk of fall-related mortality during heatwaves ( OR=1.13, 95% CI: 1.04-1.22) compared to man ( OR=1.10, 95% CI: 1.04-1.17). Conclusions:Heatwave increases the risk of fall-related mortality, and the intensity of heatwaves modify this risk. Women are vulnerable populations.

Objective:To evaluate the impact of short-term exposure to daytime heatwaves, nighttime heatwaves, and compound heatwaves on the risk of road traffic mortality and calculate the attributable mortality burden. Methods:This study collected road traffic mortality data from the Disease Surveillance System in Guangdong, Hunan, Zhejiang, Yunnan, and Jilin Provinces from 2013 to 2018. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used in this study, with the death date for each case serving as the case day. Control days were selected from the same year, month, and day of the week as the case day. A conditional logistic regression model was employed to estimate the cumulative associations of short-term exposure to daytime heatwaves, nighttime heatwaves, and compound heatwaves on the risk of road traffic mortality (lag 0-1 day) and to calculate the attributable fractions (AF).Results:Compared to non-heatwave days, the excess risk ( ER) of road traffic mortality on daytime heatwave days, nighttime heatwave days, and compound heatwave days was 5.3% (95% CI: 0.5%-10.2%), 4.9% (95% CI: 0.5%-9.4%) and 7.5% (95% CI: 2.3%- 12.9%), with corresponding AF of 5.0% (95% CI: 0.5%-9.3%), 4.7% (95% CI: 0.5%-8.6%), and 6.9% (95% CI: 2.3%-11.4%), respectively. Stratified analysis showed that the risk of traffic mortalities caused by daytime heatwaves was higher in females ( ER=15.7%, 95% CI: 5.8%-26.5%) than in males ( ER=1.8%, 95% CI: -3.6%-7.4%). Elderly individuals over 64 years old ( ER=10.9%, 95% CI: 0.3%- 22.6%) had a higher risk of road traffic mortalities from compound heatwaves than those under 45 years old ( ER=2.6%, 95% CI: -5.4%-11.2%). The risk of road traffic injury mortality from motor vehicle accidents caused by compound heatwaves ( ER=16.6%, 95% CI:2.4%-32.7%) was higher than that from non-motor vehicle accidents ( ER=5.7%, 95% CI:0.1%-11.5%). Conclusions:Short-term exposure to daytime heatwaves, nighttime heatwaves, and compound heatwaves was associated with an increased risk of road traffic mortality, with the strongest association observed for compound heatwaves. The mortality burden attributable to compound heatwaves was higher than that for daytime and nighttime heatwaves. Heatwaves were more significantly associated with road traffic mortality risk among females, elderly individuals over 64 years old, and motor vehicle accidents.

Objective:To compare the efficacy of dienogest (DNG) and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) in the treatment of intrinsic and extrinsic subtypes of adenomyosis. Methods:Totally 232 patients were enrolled in the study who were diagnosed as adenomyosis by ultrasound or pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and were classified into intrinsic and extrinsic subtypes according to different locations of lesions in MRI, treated with DNG (DNG group) or LNG-IUS (LNG-IUS group) in Peking University Third Hospital from July 2019 to December 2023. Clinical data of patients were retrospectively collected to analyze the clinical and imaging characteristics of different MRI subtypes of adenomyosis and whether there were differences in the therapeutic effects of DNG and LNG-IUS.Results:(1) Among the 232 patients enrolled, 129 were intrinsic subtype and 103 were extrinsic subtype. Among the 129 patients treated with DNG, the numbers of intrinsic and extrinsic subtype were 69 and 60, respectively. And among the 103 patients treated with LNG-IUS, the numbers of intrinsic and extrinsic subtype were 60 and 43, respectively. The mean age in DNG group [(37.5±5.6) years] was lower than that in LNG-IUS group [(40.3±4.3) years, P<0.001]. There were no significant differences in other clinical features (all P>0.05). (2) The visual analog scale (VAS) scores of dysmenorrhea and cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) levels in DNG group and LNG-IUS group were significantly decreased after treatment (all P<0.001), and hemoglobin levels were increased (both P<0.01). Compared between the two groups, the VAS score after treatment was lower in DNG group ( P<0.001), and the hemoglobin level was increased more significantly in DNG group ( P=0.016). The complete remission rates of dysmenorrhea in DNG group and LNG-IUS group were 73.0% (89/122) and 29.5% (28/95), respectively ( P=0.039). The incidence of irregular bleeding in DNG group was higher than LNG-IUS group, but there was no statistical significance [62.8% (81/129) vs 52.4% (54/103), P=0.112]. (3) Among patients with intrinsic adenomyosis, the incidence of menorrhagia was significantly higher than in those with extrinsic adenomyosis ( P<0.001), while the incidence and severity of dysmenorrhea were lower compared to extrinsic adenomyosis ( P=0.004, P=0.007, respectively). After treatment with DNG and LNG-IUS, there were no statistically significant differences in VAS scores between patients with intrinsic and extrinsic adenomyosis (all P>0.05). The incidence of irregular bleeding after DNG treatment was 78.3% (54/69) in intrinsic adenomyosis, which was higher than the 45.0% (27/60) observed in extrinsic adenomyosis ( P<0.01). Similarly, the incidence of irregular bleeding after LNG-IUS treatment was 63.3% (38/60) in intrinsic adenomyosis, higher than the 37.2% (16/43) in extrinsic adenomyosis ( P=0.009). (4) DNG treatment ( OR=19.163, 95% CI: 7.564-48.544; P<0.01) and duration of treatment ( OR=1.043, 95% CI: 1.012-1.075; P=0.007) were independent positive factors for complete remission of dysmenorrhea, while VAS score before treatment ( OR=0.654, 95% CI: 0.454-0.942; P=0.023) was negative factor. Intrinsic subtype was an independent risk factor for irregular bleeding ( OR=0.436, 95% CI: 0.235-0.811; P=0.009). Conclusions:DNG demonstrates greater advantages over LNG-IUS in terms of complete relief of dysmenorrhea and the degree of symptom alleviation. The incidence of irregular vaginal bleeding in patients with intrinsic adenomyosis is higher than in those with extrinsic adenomyosis. For patients with extrinsic adenomyosis, particularly those with prominent dysmenorrhea symptoms, DNG treatment offers greater benefits. However, for patients with intrinsic adenomyosis and those with significant menstrual disorders, a more cautious approach is required when selecting progestin therapy, along with enhanced monitoring and management.

Neuroscience Bulletin 2023;39(2):328-342
From birth to adulthood, we often align our behaviors, attitudes, and opinions with a majority, a phenomenon known as social conformity. A seminal framework has proposed that conformity behaviors are mainly driven by three fundamental motives: a desire to gain more information to be accurate, to obtain social approval from others, and to maintain a favorable self-concept. Despite extensive interest in neuroimaging investigation of social conformity, the relationship between brain systems and these fundamental motivations has yet to be established. Here, we reviewed brain imaging findings of social conformity with a componential framework, aiming to reveal the neuropsychological substrates underlying different conformity motivations. First, information-seeking engages the evaluation of social information, information integration, and modification of task-related activity, corresponding to brain networks implicated in reward, cognitive control, and tasks at hand. Second, social acceptance involves the anticipation of social acceptance or rejection and mental state attribution, mediated by networks of reward, punishment, and mentalizing. Third, self-enhancement entails the excessive representation of positive self-related information and suppression of negative self-related information, ingroup favoritism and/or outgroup derogation, and elaborated mentalizing processes to the ingroup, supported by brain systems of reward, punishment, and mentalizing. Therefore, recent brain imaging studies have provided important insights into the fundamental motivations of social conformity in terms of component processes and brain mechanisms.
