1.Morning surge of blood pressure associated with increase incidence of cerebrovascular accidents in a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic events commonly occur in the morning hours. This is retrospective study of association between morning blood pressure surge and ischemic events in hypertensive patients.
METHOD: A descriptive analysis of patients diagnosed with cerebrovascular disease who presented in the Emergency Department of Pasig City General Hospital with elevated blood pressure of 140/90 and above (either known hypertensive or newly diagnosed), between 12 midnight and 12 noon from January to June 2009.
CONCLUSION: Incidence of stroke is higher among males and it increases advancing age. It is highest in women 65 years old and above. Analysis showed that higher blood pressure in the morning implicated with higher incidence of stroke with peak occurrence between 8 and 11 in the morning. There is lack of association between circadian rhythm and the timing and type of stroke.

2.Clinical efficacy of short-course three-day-amoxicillin therapy for suspected low risk community acquired pneumonia among adult patients seen at the OPD charity of Fatima Medical Center.

This study to determine the clinical efficacy of short course amoxicillin therapy in suspected low risk community acquired pneumonia in adults. Fifteen subjects diagnosed to have pneumonia were included in the study based on Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines on CAP 2004. All subjects were given 3 grams of amoxicillin per day in 3 divided doses for 3 days. Seven subjects were lost to follow up; eight patients were able to complete the study. Clinical manifestations were evaluated and monitored. All subjects (8), showed clinical improvement after treatment with no reported adverse effects. Short Course 3 grams amoxicillin per day for 3 days for the treatment of suspected low risk pneumonia resulted in excellent clinical outcomes.

3.Bone mass density among type 2 diabetes mellitus premenopausal women seen at Fatima Medical Center Out-Patient Department.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the prevalence of low bone mass density (BMD) among premenopausal women with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the factors associated with low BMD and the relationships between BMD in association to the duration of DM, the type of physical activity and calcium intake of the patient.METHODOLOGY: This prospective study involved 33 patients seen at the Fatima Medical Center - OPD on October 2004. Bone mass density was determined using the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan). Relationship associations were computed using Chi square.RESULTS: Mean age was 49.55 yrs, mean weight 59.00 kg, mean height 1.56 m and mean duration of DM was 3.58 yrs. Only 27 percent of the subjects have low BMD. Majority (64 percent) have normal body mass index (BMI). As to the duration of DM, nine (27 percent) were newly diagnosed with less than one year duration, 45 percent had diabetes for 1-5 years. Most of the subjects (73 percent) are classified with moderate physical activity. As to their calcium intake, fifteen (45 percent) were not taking any calcium supplement, twelve (36 percent) in less than once a week calcium, and six (18 percent) more than once a week.CONCLUSION: There is minor prevalence (27 percent) of low BMD among the premenopausal type 2 diabetics. Factors associated with low bone mass density (age, BMI) had no significant association in this study. (Author)
