Background:
This study examines whether stronger corporate governance is associated with workplace mental health practices and whether this relationship is mediated by a structured sequence of occupational safety and health (OSH) engagement: recognition, goal-setting, and implementation.
Methods:
We analyzed 134 listed companies in Taiwan that published sustainability reports and received corporate governance evaluations between 2014 and 2023. Governance scores―based on shareholder rights, board functioning, transparency, and sustainability―were dichotomized into high vs. low categories. Workplace mental health practices were measured using 24 binary indicators across planning, provision, and reporting. OSH engagement was conceptualized in three stages based on Global Reporting Initiative 403 guidelines, with composite indicators derived via grouped weighted quantile sum regression. Associations were analyzed using generalized linear mixed-effects and serial mediation models.
Results:
Compared to companies ranked low in corporate governance, those ranked high had a higher likelihood of adopting mental health practices. OSH goal-setting and implementation showed significant positive associations, whereas recognition did not. Serial mediation analysis showed that 83% of the total effect of corporate governance on mental health practices was direct, while 17% was mediated through structured OSH engagement, primarily via implementation. Recognition showed a nonsignificant effect but initiated significant sequential pathways via goal-setting and implementation.Goal-setting functioned as a bridge within these chains.
Conclusion
Corporate governance plays a central role in advancing workplace mental health practices. While most effects are direct, structured OSH engagement helps translate governance priorities into sustained organizational actions that embed mental health into routine practice.

Exotoxins produced by Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae (Apx) play major roles in the pathogenesis of pleuropneumonia in swine. This study investigated the role of ApxI in hemolysis and cellular damage using a novel apxIA mutant, ApxIA336, which was developed from the parental strain A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 10 that produces only ApxI in vitro. The genotype of ApxIA336 was confirmed by PCR, Southern blotting, and gene sequencing. Exotoxin preparation derived from ApxIA336 was analyzed for its bioactivity towards porcine erythrocytes and alveolar macrophages. Analysis results indicated that ApxIA336 contained a kanamycin-resistant cassette inserted immediately after 1005 bp of the apxIA gene. Phenotype analysis of ApxIA336 revealed no difference in the growth rate as compared to the parental strain. Meanwhile, ApxI production was abolished in the bacterial culture supernatant, i.e. exotoxin preparation. The inability of ApxIA336 to produce ApxI corresponded to the loss of hemolytic and cytotoxic bioactivity in exotoxin preparation, as demonstrated by hemolysis, lactate dehydrogenase release, mitochondrial activity, and apoptosis assays. Additionally, the virulence of ApxIA336 appeared to be attenuated by 15-fold in BALB/c mice. Collectively, ApxI, but not other components in the exotoxin preparation of A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 10, was responsible for the hemolytic and cytotoxic effects on porcine erythrocytes and alveolar macrophages.

The prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection among preschool children was reported to be low based on a 5-year screening program in Taipei City, Taiwan. The Taipei City government intended to terminate the E. vermicularis screening program among preschool children. Thus, we were entrusted with confirming whether pinworm infections among preschool children in Taipei City had truly declined. From each of 12 administrative districts 2-3 kindergartens were randomly selected for investigation. In total, 4,349 children were examined, of which 2,537 were boys and 1,812 were girls. The cellophane tape adhered to a glass slide was used, and all examinations were done by certified medical technologists. Results indicated that the overall prevalence rate of pinworm infections was 0.62% (27/4,349). Although the infection rate was higher among boys (0.67%, 17/2,537) than in girls (0.55%, 10/1,812), no significant difference was found (chi2 = 0.399, P = 0.62). According to the administrative district, the infection rate ranged from no positive cases of E. vermicularis infection in the Xinyi, Zhongzhen, and Wanhua Districts (0%; 0/299, 0/165, and 0/358, respectively), to 0.26% (1/131) in Songshan District, with the highest rate of 1.88% (7/373) in Wenshan District. Because the overall infection rate (0.62%, 27/4,349) in the present study was unchanged compared to that (0.40%, 197/49,541) previously reported in 2005, we propose that regular pinworm screening and treatment programs should be continued in some parts of Taipei City.

Chinese Medical Journal 2009;122(13):1544-1548
BACKGROUNDPrevious studies have noted that there is a high utilization rate of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services in Taiwan, China and in western countries, but few studies investigated factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan. This study analyzes the utilization rate and the factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan.
METHODSData for this study were from the 2002 HPKAP Survey that conducted the face-to-face questionnaire interviews of people aged 15 years and over from October 2002 to March 2003 in Taiwan. This study analyzed the utilization of TCM outpatient services, including admission to the hospital and clinic visits.
RESULTSA total of 26 755 participants completed the survey in the six-month period. The data revealed that 10.4% of participants had utilized TCM services in the past one month while 4.2% of participants utilized TCM only (without using Western medicine outpatient services (WM) or Folk therapy (FT)). The average visits of TCM services per patient was higher among people who had utilized TCM and FT services (2.68 visits) than among those who had utilized WM and FT services (2.15 visits) or TCM services alone (2.15 visits) during the previous one month. Younger people (odds ratio OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.47 - 2.16), women (compared with men), and people with higher education levels (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.25 - 1.98) were more likely to visit TCM than compared groups. People with self-reported poor health status (OR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.76 - 2.44) and people who exercise regularly (OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.07 - 1.27) had higher ORs to visit TCM service than comparison group.
CONCLUSIONSThere is a high utilization of TCM in Taiwan. Further studies are needed to investigate the related factors and determinants between the utilization of TCM and the utilization of FT in Taiwan.
