Purpose: This study aimed to report the overall national trends in the rates of cancer screening based on recommendations and provide insights into the changing trends of these rates across different demographics. Materials and Methods: This study used data from the Korean National Cancer Screening Survey (KNCSS), which surveys nationwide cancer-screening rates and includes 4,500 individuals meeting the Korean National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP) protocol age criteria. Cancer-screening rates were assessed using structured questionnaires; yearly trends were analyzed for both lifetime cancer-screening rates and rates of screening based on recommendations, and subgroup analyses were performed based on age and sex. Results: The rates of cancer screening based on recommendations showed significant increments: the stomach cancer-screening rate increased from 39.2% in 2004 to 77.5% in 2023 (3.50% per year), the liver cancer-screening rate increased from 20.0% to 48.8% (4.30% per year), and the colorectal cancer, increased from 19.9% to 70.7% (5.15% per year). The breast cancer-screening rate increased from 33.2% to 72.7% (2.88% per year), and the cervical cancer, increased from 58.3% to 70.2% (1.08% per year). Despite some differences, particularly in relation to sociodemographic factors, screening rates increased significantly for all cancer types. Conclusion Cancer-screening rates in Korea increased consistently from 2004 to 2023, demonstrating the effectiveness of the national cancer-screening program. However, the increments in breast, cervical and lung cancer-screening rates were relatively lower, indicating the need for additional efforts and strategies.

Objective: We aimed to identify the expectations and preferences for medication and medical decision-making in patients with major psychiatric disorders. Methods: A survey was conducted among patients with major psychiatric disorders who visited psychiatric outpatient clinics at 15 hospitals between 2016 and 2018 in Korea. The survey consisted of 12 questions about demographic variables and opinions on their expectations for medication, important medical decision-makers, and preferred drug type. The most preferred value in each category in the total population was identified, and differences in the preference ratio of each item among the disease groups were compared. Results: A total of 707 participants were surveyed. In the total population, patients reported high efficacy (44.01%±21.44%) as the main wish for medication, themselves (37.39%±22.57%) and a doctor (35.27%±22.88%) as the main decision makers, and tablet/capsule (36.16%±30.69%) as the preferred type of drug. In the depressive disorders group, the preference ratio of high efficacy was significantly lower, and the preference ratio of a small amount was significantly higher than that of the psychotic disorder and bipolar disorder groups. The preference ratio of a doctor as an important decision maker in the bipolar disorder group was higher compared to the other groups. Conclusion This study revealed the preference for medications and showed differences among patients with psychiatric disorders. Providing personalized medicine that considers a patient’s preference for the drug may contribute to the improvement of drug compliance and outcomes.

Background: An autologous abdominal flap can provide an aesthetically pleasing breast with a natural feel. However, contracted scars and hourglass contour deformities at the abdominal donor site can sometimes occur. These complications can reduce patient satisfaction and quality of life. Therefore, we performed different oblique plane closure of the abdominal donor site and evaluated the aesthetic scores in comparison with the conventional vertical single plane closure. Methods: The procedures begin with a beveled incision down to the fascia level during transverse rectus abdominis muscle flap elevation. At the time of donor site closure, Scarpa’s fascia and the subcutaneous layers are sutured while being pulled downward. Sixty patients were divided into two groups: group A (single vertical plane closure) and group B (different oblique plane closure). Abdominal scars were scored by five reviewers using the scar scale. Results: There were no significant differences in scores for vascularization, dog-ear presence, and umbilical shape of the scar between the two groups. However, group B showed marked improvements in flatness, contracture, and thickness of the scar surface. Notably, the different oblique plane closure in group B achieved much higher scores for the abdominal contour than group A. Conclusions The vertical single plane suture of the abdominal donor site may result in depressive contracture with poor cosmetic outcomes. The different oblique plane closure technique markedly improved the appearance of scars on the abdomen. This technique is likely to enhance patient satisfaction with both the breast and abdominal outcomes of breast reconstruction using an abdominal flap.
