1.Health status of poor, older urban adults compared with key health indicators from the 2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the Republic of Korea: a cross-sectional comparative study

This study compared key health indicators of poor, older urban adults attending a free clinic with those of the general older population, using data from the 2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study included 60 adults aged ≥60 years who attended the Raphael Nanum Homeless Clinic in Seoul. Participants completed a questionnaire, underwent anthropometric assessment, and provided fasting blood samples for measurement of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG). Obesity, current smoking, monthly alcohol use, poor self-rated health, and strength exercise (≥ 2 days/week) were defined according to 2023 KNHANES criteria and compared with age-matched 2023 KNHANES estimates for adults aged ≥ 60 years using independent t-tests and two-proportion z-tests. Results: Participants were predominantly men (80.0%) with a mean age of 79.9 years; 70.0% reported no regular income, and 46.7% rated their health as poor. Compared with their 2023 KNHANES counterparts, the clinic group had a higher prevalence of obesity (50.0% vs. 35.0%), particularly among men, and a more atherogenic lipid profile characterized by higher LDL-cholesterol despite similar total cholesterol levels and lower TG. The prevalence of current smoking (3.3% vs. 10.6%) and monthly alcohol use (31.7% vs. 53.0%) was significantly lower, whereas participation in strength exercise was low in both groups, with no significant differences observed. Conclusion: Poor, older urban adults exhibited multidimensional health disparities, including obesity, adverse lipid profiles, and markedly poorer self-rated health, despite lower levels of smoking and alcohol consumption. Community-based interventions targeting nutrition, physical activity, and chronic disease management are needed to reduce health inequalities in this vulnerable population.
2.Multiple autoimmune syndrome in a dog presented with hematologic disease: a rare case report

Multiple autoimmune syndrome (MAS) refers to the occurrence of three or more autoimmune diseases in a patient. This case describes a 12-year-old neutered male Shih Tzu with fever and neutropenia, previously diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and inflammatory bowel disease. Blood tests revealed leukopenia and neutropenia, and immune-mediated neutropenia was suspected after ruling out other causes of neutropenia. The dog showed no response to antibiotics, but treatment with prednisolone (2 mg/kg q24h) led to improvement. This case highlights the potential for MASs to occur in dogs and underscores the importance of their recognition in the diagnosis and management of immune-mediated diseases.
3.Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity at Non-Cumulative Dose in a Dog with Multicentric Lymphoma

Doxorubicin is an effective chemotherapeutic agent widely used in veterinary oncology, particularly as part of the CHOP protocol for canine lymphoma. Despite its therapeutic benefit, cardiotoxicity remains a serious dose-limiting adverse effect. Although clinically significant cardiotoxicity is typically reported at cumulative doses of 150-240 mg/m 2 in dogs, functional cardiac deterioration has been observed at lower doses, with progression to congestive heart failure rarely reported. This case report describes doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity below the established cumulative threshold in a dog with multicentric lymphoma, which presented with overt clinical signs of congestive heart failure, including coughing, syncope, and pleural effusion. The dog also exhibited marked echocardiographic changes, including right atrial enlargement and a reduction in fractional shortening from 33% to 21% over 2 weeks, ultimately resulting in death 53 days after symptom onset. The clinical diagnosis was supported by the temporal relationship with doxorubicin administration and serial cardiac imaging findings. This case highlights that severe cardiotoxicity can occur even below traditionally accepted cumulative thresholds, reinforcing the importance of individualized, ongoing cardiac monitoring and early intervention, regardless of dose.
4.Survey on consumer perceptions, health benefits and preferences of kindergarten and school foodservices in Korea, including related keywords reported in newspaper: a mixed-methods study

Objectives:
With the rapid development of social culture, the perception of kindergarten and school foodservice, as well as opinions on its health benefits, has changed significantly. However, research on this topic remains scarce. We conducted a survey in South Korea on consumers’ perceptions, healthiness, and preferences regarding kindergarten and school foodservice.
Methods:
With the nationwide cooperation of 17 city and provincial education offices, online and offline surveys were conducted targeting the parents of kindergarten and lower-grade elementary school children, as well as upper-grade elementary, middle, and high school students. In addition, keywords in newspaper reports were analyzed using the Big Kinds platform. A total of 532 valid questionnaires were collected, and statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 27.0 (IBM Co.).
Results:
The average age of the parents and students was 40 and 12.5 years, respectively, with 36.4% of the students attending schools in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. The main keywords reported in newspaper articles, as analyzed using the Big Kinds platform, were “eco-friendly agricultural products,” “food ingredients,” “safety,” and “marine products.” The perception of kindergarten and school foodservice was very positive, especially regarding the attributes of safe ingredient use (4.44), menu variety (4.29), cafeteria cleanliness (4.31), cleanliness of plates, spoons, and utensils (4.24), thorough hygiene management (4.2), nutritional excellence (4.24), and support for proper eating habits (4.18). The healthiness of school foodservice was highly rated, although there is still room for improvement in terms of “not serving fried foods more than twice a week”. In terms of preference for school meals, the most preferred items were meat side dishes, followed by chicken, noodles, fried food, beverages, and bread. In contrast, soybean paste soup, vegetables, and mixed-grain rice received relatively low preference.
Conclusion
The results described above may be used to develop educational programs or policies that inform students and parents about the goals of school foodservice and help address common misunderstandings.
5.Developing educational videos to inform rightly about school foodservice from kindergarten to high school: a case study

Objectives:
Since the enactment of the School Nutrition Act in 1981, school lunch programs in South Korea have grown quantitatively and qualitatively with a current student participation rate of 99.8%. Nonetheless, educational materials are needed to reduce misunderstanding and ignorance about school lunch programs. This study aimed to develop 3 educational videos that help students of various ages (kindergarteners/lower-grade elementary, upper-grade elementary, and secondary school, respectively), understand the school lunch program.
Methods:
A scenario was created, was made, and the opinions on the scenario from experts in foodservice sectors were collected. A survey was conducted to students and parents to determine topics they wanted to know about school foodservice. The final videos were produced using this information and the expert opinions. The data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 for Mac (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA); a P-value of < 0.05 was considered significant.
Results:
Three videos on school foodservice were developed for various age levels of students: kindergarten/lower-grade elementary, upper-grade elementary, and secondary school. Additionally, English subtitles were included for the multicultural student population. These videos, each lasting about 7 minutes, cover topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and the cultural significance of the school lunch program. The survey results showed that parents and students wanted to know the following topics about the school lunch program: “nutritionally balanced diet” (11.9%), “purchasing safe food ingredients” (10.9%), and “healthy eating habits” (9.9%).
Conclusions
The developed videos will serve as valuable educational resources on school foodservice, foster a deeper understanding of the school lunch program in parents and students, and potentially address their inquiries regarding production processes, nutrition, hygiene, cultural heritage, and health.
6.Body Composition and Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women with Advanced Knee Osteoarthritis Undergoing Surgical Treatment

Objectives:
This study aimed to demonstrate the bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition in postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent surgical treatment, such as total knee arthroplasty, osteotomy, or meniscectomy.
Methods:
A total of 254 women with OA aged 50 years who underwent surgical treatment were enrolled in this study. We evaluated obesity-related factors, muscle components, and BMD using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
Results:
No significant differences were noted in the BMD of the hip joint between the symptomatic side of the leg with knee OA and the contralateral side. However, when comparing the BMD of each component, the results indicated a significantly higher BMD in the obesity group based on body mass index (BMI). When defining sarcopenic obesity (SO) using various indicators of obesity (BMI, the estimated visceral adipose tissue area, android/gynoid ratio, and total body fat percentage), the prevalence of SO in the OA group who underwent surgical treatment ranged from 22.0% to 49.6%.
Conclusions
This study investigated obesity-related factors in patients with advanced knee OA who underwent surgery, revealing a high prevalence of overweight/obese individuals, the presence of SO, and a complex relationship between obesity, body composition, and bone density, highlighting the potential protective effects of weight-bearing on bone health while exploring the impact of sarcopenia on bone density differences in the context of OA. Depending on various definitions of obesity, diverse proportions of SO in patients with OA have been observed, and further detailed research is required to understand its impact on the condition.

8.Age-Dependent Association of Height Loss with Incident Fracture Risk in Postmenopausal Korean Women

Background:
Height loss is a simple clinical measure associated with increased fracture risk. However, limited data exists on the association between height loss and fracture risk in postmenopausal Korean women. It is unknown whether this association varies with age.
Methods:
Data on height loss over a 6-year period were collected from a community-based longitudinal follow-up cohort (Ansung cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study). Incident fractures were defined based on self-reported fractures after excluding those due to severe trauma or toes/fingers. The association between incident fractures and height loss was investigated using a Cox proportional hazards model.
Results:
During a median follow-up of 10 years after the second visit, 259/1,806 participants (median age, 64 years) experienced incident fractures. Overall, a 1 standard deviation (SD) decrease in height (1.6 cm/median 5.8 years) was associated with 9% increased risk of fracture (hazard ratio [HR], 1.09; P=0.037), which lost statistical significance after adjustment for covariates. When stratified into age groups (50–59, 60–69, 70 years or older), a 1 SD decrease in height remained a robust predictor of fracture in the 50 to 59 years age group after adjusting for covariates (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.52; P=0.003), whereas height loss was not an independent predictor of fracture in the 60 to 69 (aHR, 1.06; P=0.333) or the 70 years or older age groups (aHR, 1.05; P=0.700; P for interaction <0.05, for all).
Conclusion
Height loss during the previous 6 years was associated with an increased 10-year fracture risk in postmenopausal women in their 50s.
9.A Recent Review of the Management of Postmenopausal Symptoms in Breast Cancer Survivors

The treatment strategy for postmenopausal symptoms resulting from estrogen deficiency in breast cancer survivors receiving endocrine therapy should differ from that in normal women. Several nonhormonal pharmacological therapies can be used to treat vasomotor symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can help alleviate psychophysiological symptoms, including depression and sleep disorders.Topical vaginal estrogen and moisturizers may aid in treating genitourinary symptoms. Additionally, chronic conditions must be individually managed. Prevention of osteoporosis should always be included in the management, and physicians should be alert to possible cardiovascular risk and cognitive function changes.
10.Comparison of the Right and Left Femur Bone Mineral Densities in Postmenopausal Women

Objectives:
Bone mineral density (BMD) is measured in the hip and posteroanterior spine; moreover, according to the 2019 International Society for Clinical Densitometry guidelines, unilateral hip can be used. This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference between the BMD of both the femurs in postmenopausal women.
Methods:
A total of 343 postmenopausal women were enrolled in this study from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019 at a single tertiary hospital. By using the Hologic® Horizon W DXA System, the femur and spine BMD was measured; BMD was recorded in g/cm 2 .Following regions were analyzed in both the femurs: the femur neck, the trochanter area, and total femur.
Results:
Mean age at imaging was 62 ± 9.7 years, and significant difference in the total BMD of both the femurs (P = 0.003) was observed. In secondary analysis, patients with osteoporosis showed significant contralateral BMD discrepancies in trochanter and total proximal femur BMD (P = 0.041 and P = 0.011, respectively). However, in women with normal BMD, no significant difference between the right and left femur BMD was observed. Furthermore, measurement of solely the unilateral hip can lead to a 16.9% of underdiagnosis in postmenopausal women.
Conclusions
In conclusion, it is necessary to check BMD in both hips, particularly in patients suspected of osteoporosis.
