Objectives: In May 2025, clusters of salmonellosis were identified in 7 cities in the Republic of Korea, all associated with consumption of identical bakery products. This investigation aimed to characterize the outbreak, identify potential contributing factors, and inform strategies for preventing similar multi-facility foodborne outbreaks. Methods: A case series study was conducted among individuals who consumed Manufacturer H’s Product I and Product II on May 15–16, 2025 at 7 facilities (n = 1,235). Clinical specimens from symptomatic individuals, retained food samples, and environmental samples were collected and tested. Food-exposure histories were assessed, and active case finding was implemented across all supplied facilities. Traceback investigations were conducted at the manufacturer, distributor, and egg farms. Human and food isolates underwent pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Results: A total of 323 cases met the outbreak case definition (attack rate, 26.2%), of which 48 were laboratory-confirmed. Salmonella Enteritidis was isolated from both clinical specimens and retained bakery products. PFGE patterns were indistinguishable between human and food isolates, and WGS demonstrated high genetic relatedness. These findings confirmed a common-source outbreak linked to the implicated bakery products. Conclusion This outbreak underscores the value of integrating epidemiological investigation, active case finding, and molecular typing to identify common food vehicles in outbreaks involving widely distributed manufactured foods. Coordinated collaboration between public health and food safety authorities is essential for the effective detection, response, and prevention of multi-facility foodborne outbreaks.

Background: Lapsi (Choerospondias axillaris), a plant native to Nepal, has been traditionally used in Asian countries to treat cardiovascular conditions. However, its effects on immune regulatory function remain largely unexplored.This study aimed to in vivo evaluate the immunoregulatory properties of Lapsi fruit extract in mice on immunotoxic responses with analysis on in vitro mechanism for immune suppression, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response.Male Balb/c mice were intragastrically administered various doses of the extract for 21 days. In some mice, immune suppression was induced with cyclophosphamide, and subsequent immune recovery was assessed. In addition, RAW264.7 cells and THP-1-derived macrophages were treated in vitro with lipopolysaccharide and different concentrations of the extract. Results: Administration of extract increased the IgG2a/IgG1 ratio while reducing serum IgE and IgG1 level compared with control mice. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-17 levels were lower in splenic culture supernatants of mice administered extract. Lapsi extract also effectively reversed cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced immunosuppression by enhancing serum levels of IgA and IgG2a, of interferon-γ and interleukin (IL)-4 secreted by splenic T cells, and of IgG1 and IgG2a secreted by B cells, as well as by increasing immune cell counts. In cell cultures, the extract decreased the levels of inflammation markers, including nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, prostaglandin E2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β). Mechanistic analysis showed that Lapsi extract modulated the NF-κB p65, MAPK, and inflammasome pathways. Conclusions Lapsi extract may act as both an immunostimulatory and anti-inflammatory agent, indicating its potential as a candidate immunomodulatory activity under polyclonal and CP-suppressed conditions; however, further disease-specific studies, along with isolation and characterization of active phytochemicals, are warranted to evaluate its therapeutic applicability.

We aimed to describe the aetiology of LRTI in children and analyse factors associated with bacterial or viral infection. Methods: Patients aged < 19 years with a diagnosis of LRTI were identified from the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model Database of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from January 2005–July 2019, and their clinical characteristics were obtained from the electronic medical records and retrospectively reviewed. Results: Among 5,924 cases of LRTI, 74.2% were pneumonia and 25.8% were bronchiolitis/ bronchitis. Patients’ median age was 1.8 (interquartile range, 3.1) years and 79.9% were < 5 years old. Pathogens were identified in 37.8%; 69.1% were viral and 30.9% were bacterial/ Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Respiratory syncytial virus was most common (70.9%) among viruses and M. pneumoniae (94.6%) was most common among bacteria. Viral LRTI was associated with winter, age < 2 years, rhinorrhoea, dyspnoea, lymphocytosis, thrombocytosis, wheezing, stridor, chest retraction, and infiltration on imaging. Bacteria/ M. pneumoniae LRTI was associated with summer, age ≥ 2 years, fever, decreased breathing sounds, leucocytosis, neutrophilia, C-reactive protein elevation, and positive imaging findings (consolidation, opacity, haziness, or pleural effusion). Conclusion In children with LRTI, various factors associated with viral or bacterial/ M. pneumoniae infections were identified, which may serve as guidance for antibiotic prescription.

Caesalpinia sappan (C. sappan) is a medicinal plant used for promoting blood circulation and removing stasis. During a screening procedure on medicinal plants, the ethylacetate extract of the lignum of C. sappan (CLE) showed inhibitory activity on arginase which has recently been reported as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. CLE inhibited arginase II activity prepared from kidney lysate in a dose-dependent manner. In HUVECs, inhibition of arginase activity by CLE reciprocally increased NOx production through enhancement of eNOS dimer stability without any significant changes in the protein levels of eNOS and arginase II expression. Furthermore, CLE-dependent arginase inhibition resulted in increase of NO generation and decrease of superoxide production on endothelium of isolated mice aorta. These results indicate that CLE augments NO production on endothelium through inhibition of arginase activity, and may imply their usefulness for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases associated with endothelial dysfunction.

Arginase competitively inhibits nitric oxide synthase (NOS) via use of the common substrate L-arginine. Arginase II has recently reported as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Here, we demonstrate that piceatannol-3'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (PG), a potent component of stilbenes, inhibits the activity of arginase I and II prepared from mouse liver and kidney lysates, respectively, in a dose-dependent manner. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells, incubation of PG markedly blocked arginase activity and increased NOx production, as measured by Griess assay. The PG effect was associated with increase of eNOS dimer ratio, although the protein levels of arginase II or eNOS were not changed. Furthermore, isolated mice aortic rings treated with PG showed inhibited arginase activity that resulted in increased nitric oxide (NO) production upto 78%, as measured using 4-amino-5-methylamino-2',7'-difluorescein (DAF-FM) and a decreased superoxide anions up to 63%, as measured using dihydroethidine (DHE) in the intact endothelium. PG showed IC50 value of 11.22 microM and 11.06 microM against arginase I and II, respectively. PG as an arginase inhibitor, therefore, represents a novel molecule for the therapy of cardiovascular diseases derived from endothelial dysfunction and may be used for the design of pharmaceutical compounds.
