1.First Report of Gray Mold Disease on Endangered Species Cypripedium japonicum

Cypripedium japonicum is known to be the indigenous plant to Korea, Japan, and China. However, C. japonicum represents the most critically endangered plant species in South Korea. The plant is esthetically pleasing due to its flower, which is larger than any other orchidaceous species. Disease symptoms relating to gray mold were observed on C. japonicum in May 2019. The suspected pathogen was successfully isolated from the symptomatic leaf tissue and conducted a pure culture of the fungi. The conidia formed consisted of a colorless or light brown single cell, which was either egg or oval-shaped with a size of 7.1 to 13.4 × 5.2 to 8.6 μm. Molecular phylogenetic relationship analysis was also confirmed that the pathogen concerned belonging to the family of Botrytis cinerea. Therefore, the findings confirmed that the pathogen isolated from C. japonicum was consistent with the unique properties of B. cinerea.

Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is caused by congenital or acquired causes and occurs in childhood or adulthood. GH replacement therapy brings benefits to body composition, exercise capacity, skeletal health, cardiovascular outcomes, and quality of life. Before initiating GH replacement, GH deficiency should be confirmed through proper stimulation tests, and in cases with proven genetic causes or structural lesions, repeated GH stimulation testing is not necessary. The dosing regimen of GH replacement therapy should be individualized, with the goal of minimizing side effects and maximizing clinical improvements. The Korean Endocrine Society and the Korean Society of Pediatric Endocrinology have developed a position statement on the diagnosis and treatment of GH deficiency. This position statement is based on a systematic review of evidence and expert opinions.

BACKGROUND:
AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance and safety of a new ¹â¸F-labeled amyloid tracer, ¹â¸F-FC119S.
METHODS:
This study prospectively recruited 105 participants, comprising 53 with Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, 16 patients with dementia other than AD (non-AD), and 36 healthy controls (HCs). In the first screening visit, the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery cognitive function test was given to the dementia group, while HC subjects completed the Korean version of the Mini Mental State Examination. Individuals underwent ¹â¸F-FC119S PET, ¹â¸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET, and brain MRI. The diagnostic performance of ¹â¸F-FC119S PET for AD was compared to a historical control (comprising previously reported and currently used amyloid-beta PET agents), ¹â¸F-FDG PET, and MRI. The standardized uptake value (SUV) ratio (ratio of the cerebral cortical SUV to the cerebellar SUV) was measured for each PET data set to provide semiquantitative analysis. All adverse effects during the clinical trial periods were monitored.
RESULTS:
Visual assessments of the ¹â¸F-FC119S PET data revealed a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 84% in detecting AD. ¹â¸F-FC119S PET demonstrated equivalent or better diagnostic performance for AD detection than the historical control, ¹â¸F-FDG PET (sensitivity of 80.0% and specificity of 76.0%), and MRI (sensitivity of 98.0% and specificity of 50.0%). The SUV ratios differed significantly between AD patients and the other groups, at 1.44±0.17 (mean±SD) for AD, 1.24±0.09 for non-AD, and 1.21±0.08 for HC. No clinically significant adverse effects occurred during the trial periods.
CONCLUSIONS
¹â¸F-FC119S PET provides high sensitivity and specificity in detecting AD and therefore may be considered a useful diagnostic tool for AD.
4.Effect of Manuka Honey on Transforming Growth Factor Beta-1-Induced Extracelluar Matrix Production in Nasal Polyp Derived Fibroblasts

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Manuka honey has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative action with a high concentration of methylglyoxal compound. It is also effective in killing Staphylococcus aureus biofilm and effective for the acute exacerbation of chronic rhinosinusitis. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-fibrotic effect of manuka honey in nasal polyp fibroblasts. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Primary nasal fibroblasts were isolated from nasal polyps and treated with transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1). To determine the anti-fibrotic effect of manuka honey, fibroblasts were pre-treated with various concentration of the honey. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis were then performed to determine α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen type I, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression and protein production in nasal polyp fibroblasts. Phosphorylated Smad (pSmad) 2/3 and phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (pAMPK) were then determined by western blotting. RESULTS: TGF-β1 stimulation increased α-SMA, collagen type I, and MMP-9 mRNA expression and protein production in nasal polyp fibroblasts. Manuka honey effectively suppressed α-SMA, collagen type I, and MMP-9 mRNA expression and protein production. Its inhibitory role on TGF-β1 induced myofibroblast differentiation and its extracellular matrix production was associated with Smad2/3 and AMPK pathway. CONCLUSION: Manuka honey can inhibit TGF-β1 induced myofibroblast differentiation, collagen type I, and MMP-9 production in nasal fibroblasts. These results suggest that manuka honey might be a useful candidate for the inhibition of nasal polyp formation if further studies in vivo were accompanied.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial appendage (LAA) anatomy and function have been well characterized both in healthy and diseased people, whereas relatively little attention has been focused on the right atrial appendage (RAA). We sought to evaluate RAA flow velocity and to compare these parameters with LAA indices and with a study of biomarkers, such as brain natriuretic peptide, among patients with sinus rhythm (SR) and atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: In a series of 79 consecutive patients referred for transesophageal echocardiography, 43 patients (23 with AF and 20 controls) were evaluated. RESULTS: AF was associated with a decrease in flow velocity for both LAA and RAA [LAA velocity-SR vs. AF: 61 +/- 22 vs. 29 +/- 18 m/sec (p < 0.01), RAA velocity-SR vs. AF: 46 +/- 20 vs. 19 +/- 8 m/sec (p < 0.01)]. Based on simple linear regression analysis, LAA velocity and RAA velocity were positively correlated, and RAA velocity was inversely correlated with brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). CONCLUSION: AF was associated with decreased RAA and LAA flow velocities. RAA velocity was found to be positively correlated with LAA velocity and negatively correlated with BNP. The plasma BNP concentration may serve as a determinant of LAA and RAA functions.

Bloodstain pattern analysis is a forensic discipline that reconstruct events of a crime scene by analyzing sizes, shapes, distributions, positions of bloodstains. Bloodstain pattern can be classified into the low velocity, medium velocity, and high velocity system. Velocities in this system represent the velocity of the wounding agent (the force applied) and not to the velocity of the blood in flight. Thus there is no reference system about the velocity of the blood in flight in the existing bloodstain classification system. Applying bloodstain pattern analysis to the real crime case, we needed to have the reference system of velocities of impact spatter, cast-off spatter, and expectorate spatter. Therefore we measured the velocities of these spatters using high speed camera and we analyzed the results. In this experiments the average velocity of impact spatter that generated by swinging a hammer with all experimenter's strength at the pool of blood is about 4.7 times faster than that of swing cast-off spatter that generated by swinging a red-wat hammer with all experimenter's strength, and about 3.9 times faster than that of expectorate spatter that generated by emitting blood from the mouth with all experimenter's strength. The velocities of cast-off spatter and expectorate spatter, however, showed similar distributions. Our experiments that measure the velocities of droplets of blood spatters in flight under the specific conditions that generated at fastest speed can give some reference to the classification system of velocities of bloodstains which is not distinct up to now, as well as some real bloodshed crime cases.

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a rare disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by the presence of calcific concentrations in the alveolar spaces. The radiographic appearance is pathognomonic. Plain chest radiographs show a white lung or sandstorm lung consisting of fine sand like microcalcifications diffusely scattered throughout both lungs with a higher density at the lung bases. We now report the case of a 67-year-old male whose diagnosis was based on characteristic findings on a chest X-ray and a high-resolution computed tomography scan.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous hypnotics are used in pregnancy, labor and delivery. The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the relaxant effects of propofol, thiopental, ketamine, and etomidate on isolated rat uterine smooth muscles. METHODS: Uterine smooth muscle preparations were obtained from non-pregnant female rats. The uterus of the rat was dissected and cut into 10 mm strips. The muscle strips were bathed in Krebs solution. After spontaneous uterine contractile activity had been accomplished, propofol, ketamine, thiopental, and etomidate in various concentrations were added cumulatively to the baths and resting tension, active tension, and frequency of contration were recorded at each concentration of agents. EC(5), EC(25), EC(50), EC(75), and EC(95) of each drug on active tension and frequency of contraction were calculated using a probit model. RESULTS: Propofol, thiopental, and etomidate reduced uterine contractions in a concentration-dependent manner. Ketamine concentrations of 10(-7) to 10(-5) M augmented uterine contractions but ketamine concentrations of 10(-4) to 10(-3) M attenuated uterine contractions. The EC(50)'s of propofol, thiopental, ketamine, and etomidate on active tension were 1.56 x 10(-5) M, 4.97 x 10(-5) M, 3.52 x 10(-4) M, and 2.73 x 10(-5) M, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: All four intravenous hypnotics relaxed the uterine smooth muscle of rats except for ketamine in low concentrations (10(-7) to 10(-5) M). Propofol had the greatest relaxant effects on isolated rat uterine smooth muscle among these hypnotics. It seems that ketamine is a suitable obstetric hypnotic agent for hypovolemic parturients and propofol is a useful hypnotic agent for uterine relaxation during pregnancy.
