2.ICF Application and Assessment Tool Analysis for Dysphagia Evaluation in Patients with Dementia: A Scoping Review

Objective:
To analyze dysphagia assessment tools for dementia patients using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework and suggest future clinical directions.
Methods:
A scoping review of literature published between 2015 and 2025 identified 44 studies. Thirty assessment tools were mapped to the four ICF components: Body functions, activities, participation, and environmental factors.
Results:
Instrumental assessments (Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study [VFSS], Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing [FEES]) and the Water Swallow Test were most frequently used. ICF mapping revealed that 96.7% of tools focused on body functions, while only approximately 20% addressed participation and environmental factors.Self/caregiver-report questionnaires covered multidimensional domains but were limited by subjectivity, whereas instrumental assessments were objective but restricted to body functions.
Conclusion
Current assessments prioritize physiological safety, often overlooking actual eating activities and environmental contexts. Future research should focus on developing ICF-based standardized observational tools to objectively assess eating behaviors, environmental factors, and body functions. This approach will support occupational therapist-led integrated rehabilitation to improve the quality of life of patients.
3.Evaluating Oral Phase Function in Adult Dysphagia: Characteristics and Measurement Elements of Assessment Tools

The oral phase is the critical initial stage of swallowing, where the oral motor function is essential. Oral phase impairment can lead to severe complications such as malnutrition and pneumonia. Therefore, accurate assessments are clinically critical. This study systematically reviewed the characteristics and measurement elements of assessment tools for evaluating the oral function and oral motor function in adult dysphagia patients. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and RISS databases for articles published up to June 2025.Ultimately, 43 articles were selected, and 22 standardized assessment tools identified within these studies were analyzed.The assessments were classified into standardized clinical tools (n=22) and instrument-based methods. An analysis of the standardized tools revealed a frequent focus on static measures like ‘Anterior spillage’ (54.5%) and ‘mealtime duration’ (45.5%), while dynamic aspects like ‘tongue propulsion’ (9.1%) were overlooked. The instrument-based methods, including oral diadochokinesis, chewing gum tests, and tongue pressure measurement, had the advantage of quantitatively evaluating the oral function. The results showed that an integrated and standardized assessment protocol capable of deeply evaluating the oral phase is needed. This study provides foundational data for the evidence-based application of oral phase assessments in future clinical practice and research.
4.Standardization of the Korean Version of Dysphagia Risk Assessment for the Community-Dwelling Elderly

Objective:
This study aimed to standardize the Korean version of the dysphagia risk assessment for the community-dwelling elderly (K-DRACE), identify normative values in the Korean elderly, and age-specific swallowing characteristics.
Methods:
Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were confirmed in 489 community-dwelling elderly aged 65 years or older in Korea. Concurrent validity was verified by correlation with the Korean version of eating assessment tool (K-EAT-10). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to assess utility and estimate the cut-off value. Norms were identified in 5-year age increments, from 65 to 85+.
Results:
The Cronbach’s α value of K-DRACE was .815, test-retest reliability was .834 (95% CI .735-.909). It was significantly positively correlated with K-EAT-10 (r=.629, P<.01). K-DRACE was thus deemed suitable as a screening tool to identify the risk of dysphagia (area under the curve [AUC]=.828), with an optimal cut-off of 3.5 (Youden’s index=.494). The total score of K-DRACE increased with age, with individuals aged 85 years and older being at risk of dysphagia (total score >4). The highest mean score was found in the oral phase.
Conclusion
K-DRACE demonstrated sufficient reliability, validity, and feasibility in the Korean elderly population and can be effectively utilized in community-based swallowing rehabilitation. This study confirms the need for specialized assessment and intervention in the oral phase for the oldest age group (85+) and emphasizes the importance of managing dysphagia in the community-dwelling elderly.
5.Effect of quality control program on surgical management in advanced ovarian cancer

Objective:
We investigated the effect of our quality control (QC) program on the management strategy, completeness of the surgery, and clinical outcomes in advanced ovarian cancer.
Methods:
A retrospective review of medical records from January 2005 to December 2019 identified 129 patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Cases were categorized into group 1 (2005–2013) and group 2 (2014–2019) before and after implementation of the QC program.Comparisons included clinicopathological variables, operative details, recurrence and survival outcomes.
Results:
In Group 2 (n=44), after QC program implementation, primary debulking surgery (PDS) decreased (87.1% vs. 63.6%) and interval debulking surgery (IDS) increased (12.9% vs.36.4%), indicating a shift in surgical strategy. Optimal resection rates improved significantly for PDS in group 2 (50.0% to 75.0%, p=0.007) and remained high for IDS in both groups (81.8% vs. 81.3%, p>0.999). Post-QC, advanced debulking procedures and co-operation with other departments increased in the IDS (p<0.05). Intra/post-operative complication rates were statistically comparable (p>0.05), whereas postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in group 2 (17 days vs. 22 days, p=0.001). Median recurrence-free survival increased after QC, although not statistically significant (19.18 months vs. 25.38 months, p=0.855).
Conclusion
With QC program, treatment strategies and clinical outcomes were significantly improved in advanced ovarian cancer. Systematic QC monitoring program should be considered as routine surveillance for better surgical outcomes.
6.Clinical outcome and pattern of care for isolated or incidental serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma:a multicenter retrospective cohort study

Objective:
Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), a potential precursor of high-grade serous carcinoma, is associated with subsequent carcinomas development. This study aimed to identify cases of STIC and serous tubal intraepithelial lesions (STIL) and examine clinical outcomes and patterns of care in BRCA1/2 mutations carriers undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO), as well as patients with incidental STIC/STIL after benign gynecologic surgery.
Methods:
This retrospective study was conducted at six institutions to examine patients with isolated STIC/STIL. Demographic, adjuvant treatment, and follow-up data were collected from the date of implementation of Sectioning and Extensively Examining the Fimbriated end protocol, which varied from 2006 to 2015, until December 2022.
Results:
We analyzed the data of 1,119 women who underwent RRSO and were carriers of BRCA1/2 mutations. The detection rate of isolated STIC/STIL was 1.70%. No patient with STIC/STIL received adjuvant chemotherapy or staging operations. The institutions used different surveillance intervals and methods, with the most common being a 3–6 month interval (11 of 19 patients) and gynecological sonography (17 of 19 patients). All patients remained with no evidence of disease (NED) throughout the follow-up period (2–121 months). Additionally, we analyzed data from five women with incidental STIC/ STIL diagnosed after benign gynecological surgery; one woman underwent staging surgery.During the follow-up period (3–46 months), all patients remained in NED.
Conclusion
While patient monitoring after STIC/STIL detection may be considered due to the minimal risk of carcinoma, excessive concern may not be necessary. Furthermore, adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered only with caution.
7.Research Trends in Artificial Intelligence Applications in Dental Hygiene and Dentistry in Korean Academic Journals: A Scoping Review

Background:
This scoping review examined research on artificial intelligence (AI) published in Korean academic journals in thefields of dental hygiene and dentistry. The Context–Concept–Maturity framework was applied to compare research trends and identify future directions.
Methods:
Following the Arksey and O’Malley framework, with extensions by Levac et al., the review adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Domestic academic journals published between January 1, 2020, and September 30, 2025, were searched in KISS, RISS, ScienceON, and DBpia. Studies were screened, extracted, and coded according to population, concept, and context criteria, yielding 70 eligible articles (26 in dental hygiene and 44 in dentistry).
Results:
In dental hygiene, most research focused on education (38.5%) and community/public oral health (38.5%), while clinicalapplications were limited (7.7%). Major conceptual domains included education/training tools (42.3%), workflow/automation (38.5%), prediction (15.4%), and classification (3.8%). Dentistry studies were predominantly clinically oriented and imagingbased, emphasizing classification, automation, and segmentation. Maturity analysis indicated that dentistry primarily occupied Stage 2 (application; ∼84.1%), whereas dental hygiene showed a dual distribution across Stage 1 (exploration; 46.2%) and Stage 2 (application; 46.2%), with limited Stage 3 (integration; 7.7%) studies.
Conclusion
AI research in Korea exhibits divergent developmental trajectories. Dental hygiene research emphasizes education,prevention, and public oral health, combining exploratory and applied approaches, while dentistry demonstrates greater clinical integration and application-level maturity. Advancing AI maturity in dental hygiene will require expansion of clinical data–driven studies, incorporation of AI and data literacy into curricula, standardized integration of unstructured and clinical data, multicenter long-term validation, and the development of ethical and performance governance frameworks.
8.Research Trends in the Journal of Dental Hygiene Science Using Keyword Network Analysis and Topic Modeling:A Comparative Study of Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Periods (2015∼2024)

Background:
As a multidisciplinary field, dental hygiene has seen the emergence of novel research topics that have reshaped itsscholarly landscape during the pandemic. This study investigated the evolution of research themes and knowledge structures in the Journal of Dental Hygiene Science (JDHS) by comparing the pre-COVID-19 (2015∼2019) and post-COVID-19 (2020∼2024) periods.
Methods:
A total of 499 articles (319 from 2015∼2019 and 180 from 2020∼2024) published in JDHS were analyzed. Using NetMiner 5.0, meaningful keywords were extracted from titles, abstracts, and author keywords. Term frequency, term frequency-inverse document frequency, degree centrality, and betweenness centrality were examined. Topic modeling was conducted using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithm.
Results:
During 2015∼2019, “student,” “stress,” “health,” and “tooth” showed high degree centrality, with eight topics identified:education and clinical practice satisfaction, oral health behaviors, job stress, teeth and oral tissues, professional identity, core competencies, preventive research, and factor analysis. In 2020∼2024, “tooth,” “work,” and “surface” demonstrated the highest degree centrality, with five reconfigured topics: dental hygienist competencies, infection control, biofilm and material-related experimental research, and oral health behaviors. Notably, “COVID-19,” “infection,” “control,” and “hand hygiene” emerged as an independent topic cluster. Across both periods, “health” and “dental hygienist” maintained high betweenness centrality, serving as bridging concepts across research domains.
Conclusion
Over the past decade, JDHS research has shifted from an education- and psychology-oriented focus to clinical andexperimental studies, with infection control emerging as an independent research theme after COVID-19. However, internationally prominent topics such as teledentistry and digital dentistry remain underrepresented, suggesting the need for expanded research in these emerging areas. This study provides quantitative evidence of structural changes in Korean dental hygiene research, offering insights to guide future research directions and journal development strategies.
10.Predication of Falls in Hospitalized Cancer Patients

Purpose:
/Objectives: To determine predictors of fall events in hospitalized patients with cancer, and identification of fall risk.
Methods:
An analysis of medical records was conducted together with a review of standardized fall reports of 565 patients admitted between January 1 and December 31, 2020. The collected data were analyzed with the chi-squared test, Fisher exact test, independent t-test, and logistic regression analysis using STATA 17 program.
Results:
There was a statistically significant increased fall risk; accompanied by a guardian (OR=10.30 CI=2.66~39.94), number of attachment devices (OR=1.30, CI=0.46~0.64), medication (OR=0.17, CI=0.04~0.84), pain (OR=4.73, CI=1.59~14.0), walking problem (OR=29.85, CI=9.31~95.74), chemotherapy (OR=5.20, CI=1.81~14.89), and fall risk score (OR=1.83, CI=1.50~2.24).
Conclusion
These findings can serve as academic evidence to support the role of nurses in assessing the risk of fall events/accidents with regard to cancer patients and the development of individually adjusted fall assessment tools.
