Objective: The quantitative assessment of spinal cord volume is still in the early stages of development. Recently, normative morphometric values of the cervical spinal cord have been reported. This study aimed to establish normative values for spinal cord morphometry, extending beyond the cervical region to include the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord, and to examine the influence of sex and ethnicity on these measurements. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 28 young, healthy, East Asian volunteers (14 males and 14 females;mean age, 30.14 ± 4.07 years) who underwent spinal cord MRI using a 3T scanner. The cross-sectional areas (CSAs), anteroposterior (AP) and transverse diameters, and compression ratios of the entire spinal cord were calculated. Additionally, the effects of sex and ethnicity on spinal cord volumetry were evaluated, with the influence of ethnicity assessed by comparing the findings with a Caucasian dataset from the PAM50 study. Results: The CSAs demonstrated two enlargements at the cervical and lumbar levels. The cervical enlargement at C4–5 exhibited an elliptical shape, while the lumbar enlargement at T12 appeared more circular. The CSAs and AP and transverse diameters of the spinal cords in males were significantly larger than that of females (P < 0.001). The spinal cord compression ratios in East Asians were significantly lower than those in Caucasians (P < 0.001). Conclusion This study revealed that the two spinal cord enlargements exhibit different patterns and suggest significant differences in spinal cord morphometric values according to sex and ethnicity.

Background: This study aimed to identify the associated factors for brain metastasis (BM) in patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) and estimate the diagnostic yield of staging brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the initial evaluation of ATC. Methods: This retrospective, single-center study included patients newly diagnosed with ATC who underwent brain MRI, from May 2008 to July 2024. The patients were stratified into two groups (BM vs. non-BM). The clinical characteristics of ATC were compared between the two groups using the chi-squared test and multivariable logistic regression analysis. The diagnostic yield of initial staging brain MRI from 2010 to 2024 was calculated. Results: A total of 77 patients (61.52±13.19 years old, 37 men) were included. BM was observed in 19 patients (24.7%). The occurrence of BM was significantly associated with extracranial metastasis (p=0.004), especially lung metastasis (p=0.017), and neurologic symptoms (p=0.001). On multivariable logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for age, sex, and primary thyroid tumor size, the presence of extracranial metastases (odds ratio [OR]: 16.09 [2.39–360.70], p=0.019) and neurologic symptoms (OR: 5.95 [1.73–24.08], p=0.007) were independently associated with BM. The diagnostic yield of staging brain MRI during the initial evaluation of ATC was 6.1% (3/49). The diagnostic rate of BM was 26.5% (18/68) in patients with extracranial metastases and 38.9% (14/36) in those with neurological symptoms. Conclusion Routine staging or surveillance brain MRI in patients with extracranial metastasis is likely to offer significant benefits.

The spinal cord is a complex and densely packed structure of nerve tissue, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an excellent imaging modality for evaluating its pathologies. Among the distinct functional zones of the spinal cord, the dorsal (or posterior) column is a crucial white matter region responsible for transmitting sensory information and is located in the posterior aspect of the spinal cord. Myelopathies of the dorsal column typically appear as high signal intensity in this region on T2-weighted images. They may arise from several pathological processes, including degenerative, metabolic, inflammatory, infectious, and traumatic conditions. Identifying the specific etiology through characteristic MRI features, along with the patient’s clinical presentation, is crucial for developing an effective treatment plan and understanding the prognosis of sensory abnormalities. This study reviews myelopathies that specifically affect the dorsal column and outlines the MRI findings that aid in the differential diagnosis of these dorsal column lesions.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) caused by multidrug-resistant organisms have emerged as a significant global issue, posing substantial challenges to healthcare systems. Low- and intermediate-level disinfectants are extensively utilized for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in hospitals to mitigate environmental transmission of HAI. Therefore, the need for more effective and environmentally safe disinfectants is increasing.This study aimed to assess the effect of antimicrobial wipes used for surface cleaning and disinfection in healthcare environments. Materials and Methods: A microbe library comprising 188 bacterial and fungal isolates, including multidrug-resistant strains, was established and used to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of three types of antimicrobial wipes:A (didecyldimethylammonium chloride [DDAC] 0.31% and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride [Si-QAC] 0.45%); B (benzalkonium chloride [BAK] 0.63%); and C (DDAC 0.5% and BAK 0.9%). The antimicrobial effect of the wipes was assessed and compared in three assays: rapid bactericidal effect assay of the three wipes, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay of DDAC and BAK, and a time-kill assay of the DDAC and Si-QAC combination. Results: The rapid antimicrobial effect evaluation showed that both wipes A and C, which contain a combination of two quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), exhibited similar antimicrobial effect (P=0.8234). Antimicrobial wipe A demonstrated better effect against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi than wipe C (P <0.05). The antimicrobial efficacy of the A wipe against Mycobacterium strains was superior to that of both the B and C wipes. Moreover, DDAC exhibited MIC50 values that were 2 to 3-fold lower than those of BAK for Gram-negative bacteria and fungi.The time-kill assay results for the DDAC and Si-QAC combination exhibited a growth reduction of >3 logs for Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium, whereas approximately 2 logs of reduction was observed for Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 3 hour. Conclusion The results suggest that antimicrobial wipes containing relatively lower concentrations of QAC (wipe A) achieve similar rapid bactericidal effect as that of those with higher concentrations (wipe C). For Gram-negative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains and fungal isolates, DDAC presented lower MICs compared with BAK. Furthermore, the combination therapy with DDAC and Si-QAC demonstrated enhanced efficacy compared to treatment with either agent alone, except in the case of Klebsiella strains. Further research is needed to develop antimicrobial wipes that minimize the environmental impact while ensuring effective disinfection.
