Based on the close structural and functional associations of the Shaoyang (少阳) channel and related zang-fu (脏腑) organs with the brain and the pharynx, this paper proposes that the pathogenesis of post-stroke dysphagia involves constraint and stagnation of the pivot mechanism, binding of phlegm and stasis, frenetic stirring of ministerial fire, and incoordination of the spirit mechanism, ultimately leading to loss of pharyngeal function. An acupuncture therapy centered on regulating the pivot and unblocking the orifice is established. Acupoints of the Shaoyang channel, including Fengchi (GB 20), Wangu (GB 12), Yifeng (SJ 17), and Waiguan (SJ 5), are selected to regulate the pivot and treat the root; acupoints of the Du (督) and Ren (任) channels, including Fengfu (GV 16), Lianquan (CV 23), and Tiantu (CV 22), are used to unblock the orifice and treat the branch. In addition, staged treatment can be applied according to syndrome differentiation. In the acute stage with predominant phlegm turbidity, Fenglong (ST 40), Yinlingquan (SP 9), Jinjin (EX-HN 12), and Yuye (EX-HN 13) are added to resolve phlegm and facilitate orifice function. During the recovery stage with excess ministerial fire scorching the pharynx, Zulinqi (GB 41) and Zhaohai (KI 6) are added to drain fire and nourish yin; when ministerial fire disturbs the spirit, Tongli (HT 5) and Neiguan (PC 6) are added to calm the spirit and the heart. During the chronic stage with blood deficiency and collateral stasis, Zusanli (ST 36) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) are added to nourish blood and unblock collaterals. In clinical practice, the angle and depth of needling are adjusted based on the stage of dysphagia, with the combination of elongated needles and medicinal moxibustion are used to enhance the therapeutic effect.

Objective To investigate the association between dietary patterns and adolescent development in girls in Pudong New Area,Shanghai. Methods Using a stratified cluster sampling method, a total of 998 girls were selected from the cohort of growth, development, and health of children and adolescents in Pudong New Area of Shanghai. Physical development examinations and dietary surveys were conducted on these girls. Principal component analysis was used to determine girls' dietary patterns, and their relationship with adolescent development was analyzed using logistic regression. Results Among the 998 participants, 770 (77.15%) were pubertal girls. The factor analysis identified three dietary patterns, fungi and algae~nuts~legumes pattern, meat-vegetables and fruits-cereals pattern, and milk-eggs pattern. Logistic regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for age, waist circumference, residential district, mother's education level, and father's education level, the Q2 level (OR=0.54, 95% CI: 0.30-0.99), Q3 level (OR=0.50, 95% CI: 0.27-0.91), and Q4 level (OR=0.49, 95% CI: 0.26-0.90) of the fungi and algae-nuts-legumes pattern were negatively correlated with adolescent development. The Q2 level (OR=0.48, 95% CI: 0.27-0.87) and Q3 level (OR=0.49, 95% CI: 0.27-0.88) of the milk-eggs pattern were also negatively correlated with adolescent development. Conclusion The fungi and algae~nuts~legumes pattern and milk-eggs patterns are inversely related to pubertal development.

In order to clarify the effects of drought stress training on the quality and drought resistance of Codonopsis pilosula, this study used PEG to simulate drought stress and employed potting with water control for the drought stress training of C. pilosula plants. The polysaccharide content, secondary metabolites, antioxidant system, and photosynthetic pigment system of C. pilosula after drought stress training were analyzed. The results showed that the content of fructans in the root of C. pilosula increased after two rounds of drought stress treatment, and it was significantly higher than that of the control group. The accumulation of fructans in the root of C. pilosula showed an upward trend during the rehydration treatment. The content of lobetyolin and tangshenoside Ⅰ increased after drought stress treatment compared with that of the control group. The rehydration treatment caused first increasing and then decreasing in the content of lobetyolin, while it had no significant effect on the tangshenoside Ⅰcontent. The content of photosynthetic pigments decreased after drought stress treatment, and it gradually increased during the first round of rehydration and the second round of rehydration. Moreover, the increase was faster in the second round of rehydration than in the first round of rehydration. The content of the peroxidation product malondialdehyde(MDA) and the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), peroxidase(POD), and catalase(CAT) increased after drought stress treatment compared with those of the control group, and they showed a tendency of decreasing during rehydration. Moreover, the decrease was faster in the second round of rehydration than in the first round of rehydration. When the plants of C. pilosula after drought stress training were again subjected to severe drought stress, the wilting rate decreased significantly, and the biomass increases significantly. This study showed that the drought stress training could promote the accumulation of polysaccharides and secondary metabolites in the root of C. pilosula. When encountering drought stress again, C. pilosula plants could quickly regulate the antioxidant system and delay the decomposition of chlorophyll to respond to drought stress. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the ecological cultivation of C. pilosula in arid and semi-arid areas.

Amber and subfossil resins are subjects of interdisciplinary research across multiple fields. However, due to their diverse origins and complex compositions, different disciplines vary in their definitions and functional interpretations. In traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), amber has been utilized as a medicinal material since ancient time, with extensive historical documentation. However, its classification, provenance, and nomenclature remain ambiguous, and authentic medicinal amber artifacts are exceedingly rare. This study employed Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) to characterize amber and subfossil resins from various geological sources and commercially "medicinal amber". Additionally, historical literature and market surveys were analyzed to explore their provenance, composition, and functional attributes. The results indicate that amber and subfossil resins from different sources and with different compositions exhibit distinct fingerprint characteristics in the FTIR spectral range of 1 800-700 cm~(-1). "Medicinal amber" available in the market primarily consists of subfossil or modern resins, significantly differing in composition and structure from geological amber. This study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research on amber identification and resource management. It is essential to establish a systematic database of amber and subfossil resin characteristics and integrate modern analytical techniques to enhance research on their composition, pharmacological mechanisms, and potential therapeutic effects, thereby promoting the standardized utilization of amber resources and advancing the modernization of TCM.

Cinnabar(HgS) was widely used in ancient times for medicinal purposes, religious rituals, and pigments. A group of bright red powdery clumps was excavated from Mawangdui Tomb No.3 of the Han Dynasty. Early studies considered the clumps as evidence of cinnabar's medicinal use during the Qin-Han period. This study employed a range of archaeometric techniques, including extended-depth-of-field stereo imaging, micro-CT, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry FTIR, to systematically analyze the material composition and structural characteristics of these remains. The results revealed that the cinnabar particles were granular, finely ground, and tightly bound to silk matrix, with no detectable excipients typically associated with medicinal formulations. Micro-CT imaging indicated a well-preserved textile structure, with clear signs of sedimentary accumulation and mechanical damage. Based on historical and archaeological studies, this study suggested that these remains were more likely degraded accumulations of cinnabar-colored silk textiles rather than medicinal cinnabar. By clarifying the diversity of ancient cinnabar applications and preservation states, this study provides new insights for the archaeological identification of mineral medicinal materials and contributes to the standardized study of Chinese medicinal materials and understanding of the historical use of cinnabar.

A previous study showed that the length of the foreskin plays a role in the risk of sexually transmitted infections and chronic prostatitis, which can lead to poor quality of sexual life. Here, the association between foreskin length and sexual dysfunction was evaluated. A total of 5700 participants were recruited from the andrology clinic at The First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei, China). Clinical characteristics, including foreskin length, were collected, and sexual function was assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) questionnaires. Men with sexual dysfunction were more likely to have redundant foreskin than men without sexual dysfunction. Among the 2721 erectile dysfunction (ED) patients and 1064 premature ejaculation (PE) patients, 301 (11.1%) ED patients and 135 (12.7%) PE patients had redundant foreskin, respectively. Men in the PE group were more likely to have redundant foreskin than men in the non-PE group ( P = 0.004). Logistic regression analyses revealed that the presence of redundant foreskin was associated with increased odds of moderate/severe ED (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.31, adjusted P = 0.04), moderate PE (aOR = 1.38, adjusted P = 0.02), and probable PE (aOR = 1.37, adjusted P = 0.03) after adjusting for confounding variables. Our study revealed a positive correlation between the presence of redundant foreskin and the risk of sexual dysfunction, especially in PE patients. Assessment of the length of the foreskin during routine clinical diagnosis may provide information for patients with sexual dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is prevalent among men, but its relationship with dietary habits is uncertain. The aim of our study was to assess whether dietary patterns enhance erectile function by reviewing the literature published before August 1, 2022, via PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases. The data compiled included author details; publication dates, countries, treatments, patient numbers, ages, follow-ups, and clinical trial outcomes, such as ED cases, odds ratios (ORs), confidence intervals (CIs), and International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) scores with means and standard deviations. An analysis of 14 studies with 27 389 participants revealed that plant-based diets (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.66-0.75; P < 0.00001), low-fat diets (OR = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.13-0.53; P = 0.0002), and alternative diets such as intermittent fasting and organic diets (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.36-0.80; P = 0.002) significantly reduced ED risk. High-protein low-fat diets (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.12-1.64; P < 0.00001) and high-carb low-fat diets (HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.55-1.04; P < 0.00001) improved IIEF-5 scores. Combined diet and exercise interventions decreased the likelihood of ED (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.28-0.85; P = 0.01) and increased the IIEF-5 score (OR = 3.40, 95% CI: 1.69-5.11; P < 0.0001). Diets abundant in fruits and vegetables (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.98; P < 0.00001) and nuts (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37-0.80; P = 0.002) were also correlated with lower ED risk. Our meta-analysis underscores a strong dietary-ED association, suggesting that low-fat/Mediterranean diets rich in produce and nuts could benefit ED management.

Chinese Journal of Dermatology 2025;58(8):759-766
Objective:To preliminarily explore therapeutic effects and possible molecular mechanisms of sinomenine on atopic dermatitis (AD) -like mouse models. Methods:Thirty female BALB/c mice (6 - 8 weeks old) were randomly divided into 5 groups: blank control group, model group, positive control group, topical sinomenine group, and oral sinomenine group. Except for the blank control group, all groups were subjected to repeated topical stimulation with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) on the dorsal skin to establish an AD-like mouse model. After modeling, no special treatment was given to the blank control group, the positive control group was topically treated with 100 μg of 0.1% mometasone furoate cream twice daily on the lesions, the topical sinomenine group was topically treated with 100 μl of 10 mg/ml sinomenine solution twice daily on the lesions, and the oral sinomenine group was gavaged with sinomenine solution at a dose of 100 mg·kg -1·d -1 (100 μl per dose, twice daily) . Treatments lasted for 14 days. Twelve hours after the final treatment, the severity of skin lesions in each group was assessed. Blood samples were collected via enucleation, and serum levels of interleukin (IL) -1β, IL-6, and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) . Histopathological changes in dorsal skin lesions were observed, and immunohistochemical study was performed to detect the expression levels of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor (NF) -κB p65 in skin tissues, expressed as the percentage of the immunopositive area. One-way analysis of variance was used for multiple group comparisons, while Tukey′s test or the Games-Howell test was applied for post-hoc comparisons between groups. Results:Compared with the blank control group, the model group exhibited epidermal hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis, thickening of the spinous layer, spongiosis, significant inflammatory cell infiltration, and prominent angiogenesis. In contrast, the positive control group, topical sinomenine group, and oral sinomenine group showed reduced spinous layer thicknesses, decreased inflammatory cell infiltration, and less pronounced angiogenesis compared to the model group. In the blank control group, model group, positive control group, topical sinomenine group, and oral sinomenine group, the severity scores of skin lesions were 0, 8.83 ± 0.75, 4.33 ± 1.08, 2.58 ± 0.49, 2.83 ± 0.93 respectively, the serum levels of IL-1β were 52.58 ± 1.72, 168.40 ± 7.23, 57.07 ± 6.39, 85.74 ± 4.15, 100.30 ± 11.55 pg/ml respectively, IL-6 levels were 86.88 ± 4.60, 215.00 ± 5.02, 79.34 ± 4.91, 127.20 ± 1.06, 149.00 ± 6.21 pg/ml respectively, IgE levels were 2 159.00 ± 176.00, 3 493.00 ± 89.61, 2 294.00 ± 158.10, 2 550.00 ± 214.70, 2 814.00 ± 119.70 μg/ml respectively, the expression levels of p38 MAPK in skin tissues were 3.03% ± 3.38%, 12.95% ± 6.89%, 2.14% ± 1.28%, 5.28% ± 3.71%, 3.85% ± 2.26% respectively, and NF-κB p65 expression levels were 0.61% ± 0.49%, 18.92% ± 6.96%, 3.77% ± 1.90%, 5.66% ± 2.28%, 6.25% ± 3.14% respectively; the differences in all the above parameters were statistically significant among groups (all P < 0.05) . Compared with the blank control group, the model group had significantly increased skin lesion severity scores, serum IL-1β, IL-6, and IgE levels, as well as elevated expression of p38 MAPK and NF-κB p65 in skin tissues (all P < 0.01) . Compared with the model group, the positive control group, topical sinomenine group, and oral sinomenine group showed significantly reduced skin lesion severity scores, decreased serum IL-1β, IL-6, and IgE levels, and lower expression of p38 MAPK and NF-κB p65 in skin tissues (all P < 0.05) . Compared with the positive control group, the topical and oral sinomenine groups exhibited further reductions in skin lesion severity scores (both P < 0.05) . Additionally, the topical sinomenine group showed significantly lower serum levels of IL-1β and IL-6 compared with the oral sinomenine group (both P < 0.05) . Conclusion:Sinomenine solution could obviously alleviate the severity of skin lesions in AD-like mouse models, likely by down-regulating the expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and IgE, inhibiting the MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway, and thus reducing the degree of inflammation.

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2025;66(15):1522-1527
Based on clinical epidemiological data, it is believed that qi deficiency constitution is closely related to allergic diseases. According to the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution theory, the intrinsic connection between qi deficiency constitution and allergic diseases is analyzed from the perspectives of inherited endowment, life process, environmental restriction, and the interplay of form and spirit. This paper discusses the key points of regulating qi deficiency constitution to prevent allergic diseases in three stages, prevention before illness, prevention of disease progression, and prevention of recurrence after recovery. It also distinguishes the treatment directions for regulating qi deficiency constitution to treat allergic diseases based on different disease locations such as the lung, spleen, and kidney. This aims to expand new ideas for the research on qi deficiency constitution and allergic diseases as well as the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases.
