For centuries, deer antler velvet (DAV) has been a staple in traditional medicine due to its numerous health benefits, including immune stimulation, anti-ageing, wound healing, and anti-osteoporosis properties. Researchers attribute the therapeutic advantages of DAV to various compounds in its extract, ranging from growth hormones to minerals and amino acids. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these natural products for their potential use in treating chronic diseases such as bone health and development, bacterial infections, and sports supplementation to increase athletic performance. The available literature supports that DAV significantly affects bone development, chondrogenesis, and antimicrobial properties, making it a valuable resource in medical and dental settings. This review aims to provide an in-depth overview of the potential applications of DAV in modern medicine and dentistry.
2.Fruit and vegetable intake among overweight and obese school children: A cluster randomised control trial

Introduction: Adequate daily intake of fruits and vegetables is crucial for the
prevention of chronic diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects of My
Body is Fit and Fabulous at School (MyBFF@school) with nutrition education
intervention (NEI) on the stages of change for fruit and vegetable intake among
overweight and obese secondary school children based on the trans-theoretical
model (TTM). Methods: This was a cluster randomised controlled trial involving 15
out of 415 eligible government secondary schools in central Peninsular Malaysia,
which were randomly assigned into intervention (six schools; 579 school children)
and control (nine schools; 462 school children). The intervention group was given
NEI for 24 weeks, while the control group followed the existing school programme
by the Ministry of Education. Results: There was no significant difference between
the intervention and control groups for the stages of change, with majority at the
maintenance stage after six months (intervention: 34.9%; control: 39.0%). The
within group analysis showed a significant reduction after six months for those
at the action stage (action and maintenance stage) from 68.0% to 60.4% in the
intervention group and from 71.4% to 65.6% in the control group. However, there
was a significant increase among those with adequate fruit and vegetable intake in
the intervention group and no significant increase in the control group. Conclusion:
MyBFF@school with NEI based on TTM provided acceptable changes in fruit and
vegetable intake among overweight and obese secondary school children.
3.Prevalence And Factors Associated With Cataract Among Rural Community Adults In Negeri Sembilan

‘Klinik Pakar Mata Bergerak’ (KLiP Mobile), translated to specialised ophthalmology mobile clinic is a programme that provides ophthalmology care in the rural community of Negeri Sembilan. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of cataracts and its associated factors among rural adults in Malaysia through an outreach programme of specialised ophthalmology services by KLiP Mobile. This is a cross-sectional study carried out from January 2016 until March 2018 and was conducted in rural areas of all seven districts in the state of Negeri Sembilanvisited by the KLiP Mobile. Universal sampling was applied to all adults attending the mobile clinic. The participants are those who were referred by the government community clinics and walk-in patients. The total number of participants in this study was 1480. The mean (SD) age for the study population was 56 (16.9), by which majority were Malay (n = 1220, 82.4%) and female (n = 809, 54.7%). Most of them received either primary (n = 604, 42.4%) or secondary education (n = 577, 40.5%). The majority of participants were categorized into the low-income group, with a monthly income of less than RM 3,000 (n = 1118, 92.4%). The prevalence of cataracts in the study population was 28.6%. In the multivariate analysis, factors significantly associated with cataracts were being male, having no formal education, race and suffering from hypertension. The prevalence of cataracts in rural areas is considerably high. This study highlights the need for baseline information for future study or as the main reference by the policymakers for policy development related to improving vision and eye care among the populations in Malaysia.
4.White mineral trioxide aggregate mixed with calcium chloride dihydrate: chemical analysis and biological properties.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the chemical and biological properties of fast-set white mineral trioxide aggregate (FS WMTA), which was WMTA combined with calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl₂·2H₂O), compared to that of WMTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surface morphology, elemental, and phase analysis were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The cytotoxicity and cell attachment properties were evaluated on human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFs) using methyl-thiazol-diphenyltetrazolium (MTT) assay and under SEM after 24 and 72 hours, respectively. RESULTS: Results showed that the addition of CaCl₂·2H₂O to WMTA affected the surface morphology and chemical composition. Although FS WMTA exhibited a non-cytotoxic profile, the cell viability values of this combination were lesser than WMTA, and the difference was significant in 7 out of 10 concentrations at the 2 time intervals (p < 0.05). HPLFs adhered over the surface of WMTA and at the interface, after 24 hours of incubation. After 72 hours, there were increased numbers of HPLFs with prominent cytoplasmic processes. Similar findings were observed with FS WMTA, but the cells were not as confluent as with WMTA. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of CaCl₂·2H₂O to WMTA affected its chemical properties. The favorable biological profile of FS WMTA towards HPLFs may have a potential impact on its clinical application for repair of perforation defects.

Combination between tissue engineering and other fields has brought an innovation in the area of regenerative medicine which ultimate aims are to repair, improve, and produce a good tissue construct. The availability of many types of scaffold, both synthetically and naturally have developed into many outstanding end products that have achieved the general objective in tissue engineering. Interestingly, most of this scaffold emulates extracellular matrix (ECM) characteristics. Therefore, ECM component sparks an interest to be explored and manipulated. The ECM featured in human amniotic membrane (HAM) provides a suitable niche for the cells to adhere, grow, proliferate, migrate and differentiate, and could possibly contribute to the production of angiogenic micro-environment indirectly. Previously, HAM scaffold has been widely used to accelerate wound healing, treat bone related and ocular diseases, and involved in cardiovascular repair. Also, it has been used in the angiogenicity study, but with a different technical approach. In addition, both side of HAM could be used in cellularised and decellularised conditions depending on the objectives of a particular research. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to investigate the behavior of ECM components especially on the stromal side of HAM and further explore the angiogenic potential exhibited by this scaffold.

6.Extraction of mitochondrial DNA from tooth dentin: application of two techniques

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a hereditary material
located in mitochondria and is normally maternally inherited.
Mutational analysis performed on mtDNA proved that the
mutations are closely related with a number of genetic
illnesses, besides being exploitable for forensic identification.
Those findings imply the importance of mtDNA in the scientific
field. MtDNA can be found in abundance in tooth dentin where
it is kept protected by the enamel, the hardest outer part of the
tooth. In this study, two techniques of mtDNA extraction were
compared to determine the efficacy between the two
techniques. Teeth used for the study was collected from Dental
Clinic, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. After the removal of
tooth from the tooth socket of the patient, the tooth was kept at
-20C until use. Later, pulp tissue and enamel was excised
using dental bur and only the root dentin was utilized for the
isolation of mtDNA by crushing it mechanically into powdered
form. MtDNA was extracted using the two published methods,
Pfeifer and Budowle and then subjected to spectrophotometry
DNA quantification and purity, Polymerase chain reaction
(PCR) amplification of hypervariable-two region of mtDNA,
followed by DNA sequencing to analyze the reliability of the
extraction techniques. In conclusion, both techniques proved to
be efficient and capable for the extraction of mtDNA from tooth
dentin.
