Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of alternative instructional approaches, including distance and online learning. This study aimed to determine factors associated with preference for online learning modality among medical students at a private medical school in the National Capital Region (NCR). Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 367 medical students using convenience sampling. Participants completed an online survey assessing preferred learning modality, general anxiety, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with online learning. Factors associated with preference for online learning were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: Most respondents (79.3%) preferred traditional face-to-face learning, whereas 20.7% preferred online learning. Male students were more likely to prefer online learning than female students (OR = 2.19, p = 0.003). Married students were more likely to prefer online learning than unmarried students (OR = 9.71, p = 0.021). Students who reported greater satisfaction with their online learning experience were more likely to prefer online learning (OR = 2.28, p = 0.024). Self-efficacy demonstrated a borderline association with preference for online learning (OR = 0.42, p = 0.053). Conclusion Sex, civil status, and satisfaction with online learning were significantly associated with preference for online learning modality. Self-efficacy demonstrated a borderline association. Despite the increased use of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, most respondents continued to prefer traditional face-to-face instruction.

CONTEXT

Accurate diagnosis of onychomycosis is important since misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate therapy, delayed diagnosis of other nail conditions, and antifungal resistance. Dermoscopy is an emerging diagnostic tool, particularly valuable in the resource-poor settings.

The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of dermoscopy as a point-of-care tool in diagnosing distal subungual onychomycosis (DSO) at a tertiary hospital.

An observational, prospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted among 22 clinically diagnosed DSO patients using convenience sampling at a tertiary hospital from November 2019 to September 2021.

Participants underwent gross nail examination, dermoscopy, potassium hydroxide (KOH), and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) examinations.

Sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, and likelihood ratios (LRs) of the dermoscopic patterns were obtained using KOH and PAS results as the reference standard.

Fifty-one nails were submitted but 2 were lost during the processing, leaving 49 nails for analysis. The most common pattern was jagged edge with spikes (65.3%). Individual patterns yielded only low-to-moderate sensitivity (32.4%–73.5%). However, combining all patterns increased sensitivity to 91.2% (95% confidence interval: 76.3–98.1). Ruin appearance showed the highest specificity (100%) and positive predictive value (100%). LRs were not significant enough to draw the conclusions.

Dermoscopy may serve as an on-site, adjunct tool in the diagnosis of DSO, especially when the combination of patterns is considered. Ruin appearance maybe particularly useful in ruling in DSO. However, confirmation using mycological and histopathological tests remains essential.

OBJECTIVES

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated burnout among medical students, impacting their academic performance and well-being. Resilience, a protective factor against burnout, remains understudied in the context of blended learning for medical students. This study aimed to examine the correlation between resilience and burnout dimensions (emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and academic efficacy) among first- to third-year medical students at a private medical institution during the 20222023 academic year.

A correlational design was employed, utilizing the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 (CDRISC-10) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey for Students (MBI-GS (S)). Sixty participants were randomly selected from the first-year to third year medical students .

High levels of emotional exhaustion (63.33%) and cynicism (56.67%) were observed, while 55% of students exhibited low resilience. Significant correlations included a negative low correlation between cynicism and resilience in first-year students (r = -0.480; p = 0.018), a negative moderate correlation between emotional exhaustion and resilience in second-year students (r = -0.571; p = 0.026), and a positive moderate correlation between academic efficacy and resilience in second-year students (r = 0.566; p = 0.028). Overall, a positive low correlation was found between academic efficacy and resilience (r = 0.375; p = 0.003).

Resilience mitigates burnout, particularly emotional exhaustion and cynicism. Targeted interventions to enhance resilience may improve academic efficacy and well-being in medical students under blended learning.

Repair of complex aortic aneurysms such as those involving the thoracoabdominal and pararenal aorta presents a formidable challenge for surgeons with significant perioperative morbidity and mortality. A hybrid procedure combining renovisceral debranching with endovascular aneurysm exclusion has been developed as an alternative approach for high-risk patients. This paper reports our initial experience with hybrid repair for these complex aortic diseases in three high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics pose a significant environmental and health threat, yet the understanding and response of young adults to this issue remain underexplored. There is an increasing amount of microplastics in our environment and as the numbers grow, the danger that comes with it is still not fully understood. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of young adults in Muntinlupa, particularly students of a public university regarding microplastics and their health implications. METHODS: Employing a quantitative cross-sectional design, the research targeted college students aged 18 and older. RESULTS: Findings revealed that while students were knowledgeable about microplastics—particularly their harmful effects on health—attitudes and practices related to plastic disposal and recycling could be improved. Although the majority engaged in proper garbage disposal, only 41.5% consistently separated plastic waste from biodegradable materials. However, a weak positive correlation between knowledge and attitudes was observed, suggesting that increased awareness may enhance positive attitudes toward reducing microplastic pollution. CONCLUSION These results suggest that while students are aware of microplastics and generally responded positively, there remains a gap in the translation of knowledge into practices, highlighting the need for enhanced educational interventions.

Background: The prone position has been seen to benefit patients experiencing acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, performing this position in pregnant patients has been difficult and raises safety concerns. Objective: The current study aimed to test the use of a supportive pillow (Prone Pillow for Pregnant Patients or 4P) to address concerns regarding pregnant patients in prone position. Methods: The study prospectively evaluated the use of the prone pillow for patient comfort and usability among healthcare workers with qualitative and quantitative measures. Results: A total of three patients were recruited alongside 16 healthcare workers assisting pregnant patients to the prone position. Overall, awake pregnant patients found the pillow to be comfortable while healthcare workers perceived the pillow to be useful in improving quality of care among awake and intubated pregnant patients. Conclusion The 4P is a potentially useful and beneficial product in placing pregnant patients in the prone position during episodes of acute respiratory distress. However, due to the limited sample size, more clinical trials are needed to evaluate the impact of this innovation in improving patient and healthcare worker safety.
