Despite publishing and securing research grants being obligatory in research universities, the literature on the factors influencing academic productivity is relatively scarce. Thus, in this study, we aimed to determine the personal and behavioural-related factors that influence the culture of publishing and securing research grants among academicians with lower research-related performance. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 49 academic staff members of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). A self-administered questionnaire consisting of personal, attitude and behavioural (barriers, perceived stress scale, work extrinsic and intrinsic motivation scale, psychological well-being scale, and basic needs satisfaction scale) questions were distributed during a workshop and online. Simple linear regression (SLR) analyses were performed for each variable, followed by multiple linear regression (MLR) to identify the associated factors of research output. After adjusting for covariates, having a doctoral degree (β=0.396, 95% CI=0.221-2.146, p<0.05) and integrated regulation (β=0.574, 95% CI=0.036-3.612, p<0.05) were found to be associated with research grant acquisition (R2=0.273). Moreover, increasing age (β=0.426, 95% CI=0.088-0.397, p<0.05), living alone (β=0.331, 95% CI=0.944-6.626, p<0.05), having a doctoral degree (β=0.248, 95% CI=0.174-6.747, p<0.05), environmental mastery (β=0.318, 95% CI=0.013-0.347, p<0.05), self-acceptance (β=0.284, 95% CI=0.010-0.242, p<0.05), satisfaction incompetence (β=0.273, 95% CI=0.001-0.200, p<0.05) and relatedness (β=0.280, 95% CI=0.001-0.116, p<0.05) were found to be the factors that influence the publications produced among participants (R2 =0.423). The findings of this study could be used by management to formulate effective strategies to increase the productivity of academics in their research-related performance.

Electronic medical records from hospital information system (HIS) offer a major potential for secondary data analysis which can improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery. This study describes an initiative to use HIS data to explore the level of diabetic care in patients with T2DM in a hospital-based outpatient clinic, the advantages and challenges in utilising HIS data. Methods: Patients age of 18 and above who received any diabetes medication in 2013 were retrospectively identified from HIS of Serdang Hospital. Demographic characteristics, anti-diabetic agent (ADA) dispensed, and glycaemic measures were quantified. Data was extracted using structured query language (SQL) and descriptive statistical analyses were conducted using Stata Version 12. Results: Prevalence of T2DM patients in the hospital was 7.5%. Male had slightly higher prevalence and patient at age of 61-70 years old. About 62% of patients were prescribed with metformin and 5% of newer combination of oral hypoglycemic agent. In prescribing pattern, stratification by age group, showed that patient age 41 to 70 years received mostly monotherapy, whilst 61.1% continue their regime for the year. Only 18% obtained good glycaemic control. Conclusion: Hospital Information system is a critical instrument in providing data as a platform in diabetic care in an outpatient care. Moving forward, steps to improve HIS should be taken to seize its potential as a tool to increase the efficiency of healthcare delivery.

Dengue virus (DENV) is maintained and circulated in both sylvatic/enzootic and endemic/human cycles and spill over infection of sylvatic DENV into human populations has been reported. Extensive deforestation and increase human activities in forest may increase the risk of human exposure to sylvatic dengue infection and this may become a threat to human. Present study investigated the changes in cell morphology and viral morphogenesis upon infection with sylvatic and endemic ecotypes in human monocytic U-937 cells using transmission electron microscopy. Autophagy, a process that is either pro-viral or anti-viral, was observed in U-937 cells of both infections, however only the replication of endemic DENV was evidenced. An insight into the infection responses of sylvatic progenitors of DENV in susceptible host cells may provide better understanding on dengue emergence in human populations.

Serological confirmation of dengue in 1,410 school-going children aged 7-18 years provided prevalence data for 16 different sites in Malaysia. These sites ranged from highly urbanized cities to small towns. We found that at least ~7 % of children in the study group had been exposed to dengue by age 12 and ~16% by age 18. Here we report that the dengue seroprevalence correlates with i) increasing land development and decreased vegetation, and ii) the overall population growth. Water bodies did not significantly affect dengue prevalence. High prevalence of dengue was also recorded in few of the non-urban sites suggesting the expanding geographical locality of those who get dengue in Malaysia in tandem with increased land usage activities. These findings highlight the need to give closer consideration to future urban planning and development, taking into consideration the changing demography and the importance of built environment to mitigate the increasing incidence of dengue in the non-urban areas of Malaysia.

Poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) was synthesized from p-xylylene bis(tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) using the Wessling route and characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) and UV-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopic techniques. The significance of thermal treatment along with evolution of precursor polymer to polymer PPV was also studied through these spectroscopic techniques. Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) measurements indicated the presence of crystallization, sulphonium group which occurred through the evolution from precursor polymer to polymer PPV during thermal treatment.

Hydroxyapatite, (HA; Ca1O(PO4)6(OH)2) has been successfully applied in medical and dental applications for several years due to its excellent biocompatibility. The usage of HA in Malaysia, however, is limited due to the lack of availability. Therefore the aim of this work is to produce HA materials from both pure chemicals and from Malaysian natural limestone precursors, and to compare their bulk properties. However, parts of Malaysian natural limestone deposits actually consist of a combination of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3. In order to utilise the limestone to produce HA material, the combination of these commercially pure chemicals as HA precursors should still work. In order to test this hypothesis, two HAs were produced by wet synthesis technique utilising (a) combination of Ca(OH)2 + CaCO3 from pure commercial chemicals [WCC] and (b) a local natural limestone [WL] precursors. The HAs produced; WCC and WL, were compacted into discs and sintered at 1250 degrees C. The characterisations and evaluations conducted were XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR and shrinkage factor. The results indicate that WL gives slightly better bulk properties compared to WCC.
