Purpose:
This study evaluated the effects of an 8‑week liquid diets with different carbohydrate contents–64% energy in HINE E‑Gel (ST) and 50% energy in HINE E‑Gel LC (LC)–on glycemic control and nutritional status in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (db/db mice). The objective was to determine whether reducing carbohydrate intake within the Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese people improves glycemic control indices, addressing the evidence gap in regarding the long‑term safety and efficacy of low‑carbohydrate enteral nutrition in patients with diabetes.
Methods:
db/db mice (n=10 per group) and non‑diabetic db/m mice (n=4) as controls were fed ST, LC, or AIN‑93G diets ad libitum for 8 weeks. The diets primarily differed in carbohydrate content (64% in ST vs. 50% in LC). Blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), plasma glucose and glycoalbumin, organ weights, and renal function markers were measured weekly or at 4 and 8 weeks. Histopathological examinations of the liver and kidneys were performed at 8 weeks.
Results:
At 8 weeks, the LC group showed significantly lower plasma glucose (P=0.0051) and glycoalbumin (P=0.0013) levels compared to the ST group, with a trend toward lower HbA1c (P=0.0514). Although body weight was significantly higher in the LC group (P=0.0038), there were no significant differences between the ST and LC groups in caloric intake, renal function, or histopathological findings.
Conclusion
Reducing carbohydrate intake to 50% of total energy within dietary guidelines may improve glycemic control in diabetic mice, suggesting the need for further long‑term evaluation for clinical applications.

4.Return-to-work among COVID-19 survivors in the Philippines and the role of rehabilitation: A mixed-method design

BACKGROUND
A substantial number of COVID-19 recoverees are working-aged individuals, which makes return-towork (RTW) an essential part of rehabilitation. Many COVID-19 recoverees must deal with physical and mental symptoms of post-COVID conditions such as fatigue, dyspnea, difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, and anxiety. These symptoms coupled with often insufficient support from employers and the government can make the RTW process complicated. Although research related to RTW after COVID-19 has begun to emerge over the years, few primary studies have come out from developing countries.
OBJECTIVESThis exploratory study aims to describe perceived work ability and health-related quality of life, lived experiences of the RTW process, and role of rehabilitation in a limited sample of Filipino COVID-19 recoverees.
METHODSUsing purposive sampling and a convergent parallel mixed-method design, the study draws on an online survey and group interviews to understand expectations, experiences, and self-rated work ability of working-age adults with post-COVID condition. We report the findings of the questionnaire data using descriptive statistics. From the questionnaire respondents, eight participants were interviewed to explore the RTW experiences from multiple perspectives. The group interview was conducted online, and narrative analysis was used to explore the data. This analytic process involved an iterative and inductive process between data gathering and data analysis.
RESULTSFindings from our narrative analysis are reported under four themes: 1) The period of liminality; 2) A ‘positive’ problem; 3) Health as a psychosocial and justice issue; and 4) The reimagination of paid work. The narratives gathered document an overview of how selected Filipinos overcame the COVID-19 infection and their recovery and RTW process.
CONCLUSIONResults call for a re-examination of the concept of health and paid work for individuals undergoing rehabilitation and recovery.

5.Factors influencing the implementation of a disability package for children with developmental disabilities: A policy analysis

OBJECTIVE
This study analyzed the factors influencing the implementation of the disability benefit package for children with developmental disabilities (CDDs) in the Philippines.
METHODSData collection was done through document review of policy documents and focused group discussions (FGDs). Guided by Walt and Gilson’s policy triangle framework, data were analyzed through content analysis.
RESULTSTwenty-two (22) policy documents were reviewed and a total of 16 participants joined the FGDs. Facilitators and barriers were identified and categorized through the policy elements: 1) context is anchored by presence of laws and policies but is hindered by issues on politics, governance, and labor force; 2) policy actors are hopeful in the continuous implementation of the policy but there is a lack of participation from all potential policy actors and limitations with human resources; 3) content is sound and comprehensive but there are costing issues and compliance concerns with requirements; and 4) processes emphasize quality assurance and promising initial dissemination efforts but the lack of stakeholder engagement activities and the tediousness of requirements discourage potential service providers.
CONCLUSIONWhile the launch of the disability benefit package for CDDs in the Philippines seemed promising, the policy remains underutilized as the identified barriers outweigh the facilitators. Specific recommendations for the improvement and implementation of the benefit package were outlined and framed based on the policy triangle framework.

8.Motivating and hindering factors affecting muslim mothers' Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices in select municipalities of Maguindanao, BARMM, Philippines

OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to determine the motivating and hindering factors affecting the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices of Muslim mothers in select municipalities of Maguindanao.
METHODSA pretested questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews conducted among 320 randomly selected Muslim mothers with a child aged 6-23 months.
RESULTSResults revealed that prelacteal feeding was practiced by 16.6% of the Muslim mothers, giving mostly plain water. Solid/semi-solid foods were introduced at a mean age of 6.1 ± 1.4 months, with home-cooked lugao (porridge) (55.0%) and commercial baby food (31.3%) as the top foods introduced. The majority of Muslim mothers (82.5%) fed processed foods as complementary food to their children, including instant noodles (85.2%) and canned goods (51.5%). These processed foods were mostly obtained from sari-sari stores, with TV as the top source of information. More than 80% of the Muslim mothers cited food availability, economic reasons, and convenience in food preparation as the top three motivating factors in the practice of complementary feeding (CF). In addition, almost all the Muslim mothers (~97%) mentioned seeing their children grow healthy as the top reason for improving their food preparation practices, followed by positive feedback from their families. Meanwhile, household duties, low milk output, and a new pregnancy make it difficult to continue breastfeeding, while high complementary food costs, a limited budget, and a lack of food make it difficult to provide complementary food. The preparation of food for infants and young children is hindered by an increased workload and a lack of understanding.
CONCLUSIONThe results revealed suboptimal practices in prelacteal feeding and the reliance on processed foods among Muslim mothers, with economic factors, availability, and convenience as motivating factors in complementary feeding practices. Challenges such as household duties, low milk output, and financial constraints hinder breastfeeding and nutritious food provision for infants and young children. The study reinforced the necessity for holistic strategies in IYCF promotion among Muslim mothers.

9.Comparative copy number variation profiling of GL01, an immortalized non-small cell lung cancer cell line derived from a Filipino patient, and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Cell lines serve as invaluable tools in studying lung cancer biology and developing new therapies to combat the disease. However, commercially available cell lines are typically of Caucasian origin and may be less representative of the local genetic background. To address this, our lab previously immortalized cells from pleural fluid of a Filipino non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patient via CDK4 transduction. Copy number variations (CNVs) are a type of genetic variation which may affect physiology and disease by disrupting gene function or altering gene expression, and in cancer, these may be associated with patient outcomes. CNV profiling can be valuable for understanding the biology of our immortalized cells and identifying genes that could serve as potential targets for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic interventions. This study aimed to characterize previously immortalized NSCLC-derived cells, GL01, in comparison with an established lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cell line, A549, through whole-genome microarray-based copy number profiling.
METHODSDNA was extracted from GL01 and A549 cells using a commercially-available silica-based DNA extraction kit. DNA extracts were quantified and normalized for microarray analysis. Whole-genome copy number profiling was done using the OncoScan CNV Plus Assay following the manufacturer’s protocols, and data was analyzed using the Chromosome Analysis Suite software. Functional analysis of genes identified to be involved in copy number aberrations was done using the PANTHER Classification System.
RESULTSCopy number aberrations span 1,592,737,105 bp in GL01 and 1,715,708,552 bp in A549, with a high degree of concordance between the two. Large-scale and focal copy number aberrations previously identified to be recurrent in various LUAD cohorts were present in both GL01 and A549. Focal copy number aberrations associated with previously described lung cancer-related genes involve the PDE4D gene in GL01 and the SKIL and CDKN2A/CDKN2B genes in both GL01 and A549. PANTHER Pathway analysis of genes positively correlated with mRNA expression showed that the ubiquitin proteasome pathway was significantly overrepresented in both GL01 (FDR p = 0.000074) and A549 (FDR p = 0.000075), with 20 genes involved. Additionally, the KRAS:p.G12C/S:c.34G>T/A somatic mutation variant was detected in both GL01 and A549.
CONCLUSIONThis study provides a method for identifying potentially clinically-relevant genes associated with a sample’s copy number aberrations and the pathways they represent, providing personalized mechanistic, prognostic, and therapeutic insights into the cancer biology of our cells.

10.Effect of a capacity building on the knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy on Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) of the Local Agriculture Planners in CALABARZON: A non-randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND
Filipino farmers recorded the highest incidence of poverty in the last decade. In addition, a heightened awareness was observed within agriculture and different government agencies to better understand the link between agriculture and nutrition. However, limited studies have been conducted in the Philippines integrating nutritionsensitive agriculture into the Municipal Agricultural Development Plan (MADP).
OBJECTIVESThis study aims to determine the effect of capacity building on the knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy of municipal agriculturists on Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) in CALABARZON.
METHODSThis study utilized a non-randomized controlled trial design to measure the change in knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy of the municipal agriculturists on NSA and nutrition sensitivity of the MADP. A total of 57 municipal agriculturists from CALABARZON participated in the capacity building.
RESULTSLocal agriculture planners' knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy significantly improved after capacity building. In addition, membership of municipal agriculturists to local nutrition committee was significantly associated with higher scores difference in knowledge and self-efficacy after the training. Meanwhile, the score difference in their attitude was significantly related to the tenure of employment in local agriculture planners.
CONCLUSIONCapacity building on the NSA can significantly improve local agriculture planners' knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy. Thus, the government must support programs and initiatives concerning the NSA, like increasing the capacity of local agriculture planners. This will allow them to integrate nutrition-sensitive agriculture concepts positively into their agriculture development plan.
