1.Exploring the lived experiences of working female nursing students in a private university in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam: A phenomenological study

INTRODUCTION
For female nursing students in Vietnam, juggling work, school, and personal obligations can be especially difficult. Research on how these students develop resilience while juggling their multiple roles is still lacking, despite the fact that their numbers in nursing school are increasing. This study explores how the work-life-study balance (WLSB) of female students pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is shaped by their real-life experiences and sociocultural influences.
METHODSA qualitative research design informed by interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used in this study. In September 2024, ten carefully selected female nursing students participated in semi-structured interviews at a private university in Ho Chi Minh City. From October 2024 to February 2025, each 45–60 minute interview was subjected to a thematic analysis using Delve software.
RESULTSThe challenges faced by the participants, along with their support systems, coping strategies, and aspirations, were captured in four key themes, each with its own set of sub-themes. The first theme, Navigating Life's Crossroads: The Struggle for Balance, highlighted the students' struggles to manage competing demands, featuring subthemes, Pulled in All Directions, Time as a Scarce Commodity, and Compromises and Sacrifices. The second theme, Anchors in the Storm: Finding Strength in Support, emphasized the vital role of relational support, showcasing subthemes, Peer Solidarity and Shared Struggles, and Family as a Pillar of Strength. The third theme, Pathways to Resilience: Strategies for Survival, focused on coping strategies and adaptive techniques, incorporating subtheme, Faith and Inner Strength, Embracing the Role of a Working Learner, and Prioritizing and Organizing. Finally, the last theme, Purpose, Aspiration, and Future Orientation, brought attention to the participants' sources of motivation and their optimistic outlook, with subthemes, Motivation Rooted in Family and Self and Hope and Optimism as Sustaining Forces. These findings, grounded in the Transformative Resilience Model, illustrate how students harness their inner drive, familial and social responsibilities, and cultural values to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges. To maintain their dedication to education and uplift their families, participants leaned on hope, spiritual insights, and a sense of agency, viewing their struggles as meaningful experiences.
CONCLUSIONThe experiences of Vietnamese female nursing students reveal a remarkable resilience shaped by both heavy social expectations and personal challenges. Drawing from the Transformative Resilience Model, this study highlights how facing and overcoming adversity can lead to significant identity development and personal growth. Institutional support plays a crucial role in enhancing a student's well-being, which can include flexible academic policies, accessible mental health services, and adaptable work-study options. Financial pressures, job-related stress, and academic demands often contribute to burnout. These findings underscore the urgent need for systemic, collaborative efforts to foster inclusive and sustainable learning environments for nursing students who are balancing work and study.

2.Study on Quantitative Evaluation Method of Balance Ability in Cancer Patients Based on Gait Features.

The importance of gait assessment in the rehabilitation of cancer patients is gradually being recognized. However, quantitative analysis of balance ability in cancer patients is still limited. A total of 102 cancer patients meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited from Hefei Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Their balance ability was evaluated using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Gait data were collected by an electronic walkway and an IMU sensor system, including spatial-temporal and kinematic gait features such as step length, cadence, support time, and range of motion. Recursive feature elimination was used for feature selection. Ridge, Elastic Net, SVR, RF, and AdaBoost models were used to predict balance ability scores. Five-fold cross-validation was used to evaluate the performance of these models. Results show that the SVR model achieves the best performance with fifteen features (RMSE=3.22, R 2=0.91), followed by Ridge (RMSE=3.63, R 2=0.89). A method for evaluating balance ability based on gait features is proposed, providing a quantitative tool for personalized rehabilitation interventions in cancer patients.

3.Study on normal reference values for dynamic balance parameters in healthy adults aged 20-69 years.

Objective:To establish normal reference value ranges for dynamic balance function parameters in healthy Chinese adults aged 20-69 years. Methods:A total of 100 healthy subjects were selected and evenly divided into five age groups: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-69 years, with equal gender distribution in each group. Balance function was assessed using the EquiTest system (NeuroCom), with following tests performed Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Motor Control Test (MCT), Adaptation Test (ADT), and Limits of Stability (LOS) test. All parameters were statistically analyzed and expressed as ±S. Results:The normal reference ranges for SOT, MCT, ADT, and LOS parameters were established for each age group. Multiple balance function parameters demonstrated a gradual decline with advancing age, with more pronounced deterioration observed after the age of 60. Specific findings included decreased vestibular ratio and reduced visual preference in SOT, as well as prolonged reaction time, impaired directional control, and reduced maximum excursion in the backward direction during LOS testing. Conclusion:This study is the first to establish age-specific reference ranges for dynamic balance function parameters in a healthy Chinese population aged 20-69 years, providing localized and objective criteria for the assessment of balance function and supporting clinical diagnosis of balance-related disorders in China.

4.Association between fluid balance trajectory and 28-day mortality and continuous renal replacement therapy in patients with severe acute pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the association between fluid balance trajectories within the first 3 days of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 28-day mortality as well as the incidence of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).
METHODS:
Clinical data of SAP patients were extracted from the Medical Information Mart of Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV). Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was used to analyze the daily fluid balance of patients within 3 days of ICU admission, and grouping them accordingly. Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between fluid balance trajectory and 28-day mortality and ICU CRRT in SAP patients.
RESULTS:
A total of 251 SAP patients were included, with 33 deaths within 28 days, and a 28-day mortality of 13.15%; 49 patients (19.52%) continued to receive bedside CRRT after 3 days of ICU admission. The fluid balance on the 3rd day, cumulative fluid balance within 3 days of ICU admission, and incidence of CRRT in the death group were significantly higher than those in the survival group. According to GBTM groups, there were 127 cases in the moderate fluid resuscitation with rapid reduction (MF group), 44 cases in the large fluid resuscitation with rapid reduction (LF group), 20 cases in the moderate fluid resuscitation with slow reduction (MS group), and 60 cases in the small fluid resuscitation with slow reduction (SS group). The cumulative fluid balance within 3 days of ICU admission of the MF group, LF group, MS group, and SS group were 8.60% (5.15%, 11.70%), 16.70% (13.00%, 21.02%), 23.40% (19.38%, 25.45%), and 0.65% (-2.35%, 2.20%), respectively, and the incidence of CRRT during ICU hospitalization were 11.02%, 29.55%, 85.00%, and 8.33%, respectively, with statistically significant differences among the groups (both P < 0.05); the 28-day mortality were 11.02%, 18.18%, 20.00%, and 11.67%, respectively, with no statistically significant difference among the groups (P > 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis showed there was no statistically significant difference in 28-day cumulative survival rate among groups with different fluid balance trajectories (Log-rank test: χ 2 = 2.31, P = 0.509). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that cumulative fluid balance within 3 days of ICU admission was an independent risk factor for 28-day mortality [odds ratio (OR) = 1.071, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was 1.005-1.144, P = 0.040] and CRRT requirement (OR = 1.233, 95%CI was 1.125-1.372, P < 0.001); early aggressive fluid resuscitation on day 1 reduced CRRT risk (OR = 0.866, 95%CI was 0.756-0.978, P = 0.030).
CONCLUSIONS
Dynamic fluid management is essential in SAP patients. While early aggressive fluid resuscitation may reduce CRRT demand, excessive cumulative fluid balance is associated with increased 28-day mortality and CRRT incidence.

5.Physical Function Characteristics of Elderly Women With Fall Experiences.

Objective To explore the physical function indicators of elderly women with fall experiences,so as to provide more data reference for fall prevention,risk assessment,and solving of aging-related health problems in elderly women.Methods The fall history of 167 elderly women in communities in Tianjin was investigated by a questionnaire.The participants were assigned into a fall group(more than 2 falls in the last 1 year)and a non-fall group according to the number of falls.Body composition was tested by an Inbody 770 Body Composition Analyzer,and the calcaneus bone mineral density was measured by a UBD2002A Ultrasound Bone Densitometer.The muscle strength and proprioception of knee and ankle joints of lower limbs were measured by a PRIMUS BTE Isokinetic Tester.The muscle strength of lower limbs was evaluated by the number of 30-second sitting-rising.The visual sensitivity was examined by two-contrast near point reading cards(with a small number of strokes).The dynamic and static balance abilities were determined by a Korebalance Tester,and the static balance ability was tested by one-leg standing with eyes closed.The dynamic and static balance was assessed based on the Berg balance scale,and walking gait characteristics were studied by a BTS three-dimensional motion capture system.Results The skeletal muscle content(P<0.001),strength of non-dominant knee flexor muscle(P=0.002),number of 30-second sitting-rising(P=0.006),and average walking speed(P=0.013)in the fall group were lower than those in the non-fall group.The visual acuity at 10% grayscale(P=0.001),active knee joint position sense(P<0.001),strength of non-dominant ankle flexor muscle(P<0.001),and one-leg standing time with eyes closed(P<0.001)in the fall group were lower than those in the non-fall group.The fall group outperformed the non-fall group in right-left balance rate(P=0.031)and forward-backward balance rate(P=0.028)during static and dynamic balance tests.Conclusion The ankle angle,proprioception,muscle strength,and skeletal muscle content of lower limbs,visual sensitivity,dynamic and static balance abilities,and walking ability of elderly women with fall experiences were lower than those without fall experiences.

6.A realist review of effective university-based wellness programs on physical activity, occupational balance, and vocal health

Background:
Wellness programs can be implemented in a university setting and may include varied elements such as physical activity, occupational balance, and vocal health. However, there is limited information that highlights and synthesizes why and how these programs work. Therefore, this study aimed to understand effective programs on physical activity, occupational balance, and vocal health for university constituents in relation to the implementation contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes (CMO).
Methodology:
Guided by the Health Belief Model in the context of a realist review design, the researchers conducted an iterative search among seven peer-reviewed electronic databases in the health and education fields using a predetermined set of eligibility criteria.
Results:
The search identified 6564 records, of which programs from 20 records contributed to data synthesis. Nine CMO statements were created, with physical activity programs accounting for most configurations. Key themes identified were tailored and individualized interventions, medium-term incentivization, lifestyle education programs utilizing information and communications technology, interdisciplinary multi-component programs, use of self-monitoring strategies, social support, and shared experiences among employees and students. Analysis of the mechanisms of these effective university programs revealed processes and structures that were consistent with elements of the Health Belief Model.
Conclusion
Effective university-based PA programs result from a health-supporting culture among staff and students, utilizing self-based, technological, and social approaches that target and address individual and organizational behaviors in physical activity, occupational balance, and vocal health. This realist review provides practical information that may guide the development of university-based programs and policies targeting these areas of wellness.

7.Impact of Transition to Online Teaching on the Work-Life Balance and Mental Health of Lecturers in a Medical University

Introduction:
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in a complete lockdown of educational institutions in Malaysia necessitating an immediate shift from conventional face-to-face teaching to online teaching-learning (OTL). This invariably affected the work-life balance and mental health of medical lecturers. This study was done to assess the adequacy of training of lecturers to conduct OTL and the challenges faced, and the impact of transitioning to OTL on the work-life balance and mental health of medical lecturers. The mental health status of lecturers was compared according to age categories of Gen-X, Gen-Y and Baby Boomer (BB) generations.
Methods:
An online survey was conducted between August and October 2021. Participants were asked to answer a series of questions designed to assess adequacy of training received, impact on work life balance, and score themselves with validated scoring tools to assess for anxiety, depression, and stress levels.
Results:
A total of 179 lecturers participated in the study. Training for OTL was deemed to be adequate and prepared the lecturers well for OTL. The transition to OTL negatively disrupted work-life balance causing extra work hours, disruption to family life, sleep issues, exhaustion, and stress but were positive in many other aspects. Gen-X and Gen-Y lecturers had higher perceived stress compared to BB.
Conclusions
Transitioning to online teaching during COVID-19 pandemic impacted work-life balance positively and negatively. Moderate to high perceived stress were reported, especially among younger lecturers. Training to equip lecturers to conduct online teaching and support for mental health and wellbeing should be provided.

8.Analysis of the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on corticomuscular coupling during standing balance.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proven to promote human balance, but research on its impact on motor ability mainly focuses on external physical analysis, with little analysis on the intrinsic neural regulatory mechanisms. This study, for the first time, investigated the effects of NMES on cortical activity and cortico-muscular functional coupling (CMFC) during standing balance. Twelve healthy subjects were recruited in bilateral NMES training, with each session consisting of 60 electrically induced isometric contractions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, electromyogram (EMG) signals, and center of pressure (COP) signals of the foot sole were collected before stimulation, two weeks after stimulation, and four weeks after stimulation while the subjects maintained standing balance. The results showed that NMES training improved subjects' postural stability during standing balance. Additionally, based on the EMG power spectral density (PSD), the κ frequency band was defined, and EEG-EMG time-frequency maximal information coefficients (TFMIC) were calculated. It was found that NMES enhanced functional connectivity between the cortex and lower limb muscles, with varying degrees of increase in β-κ and γ-κ frequency band CMFC after stimulation. Furthermore, sample entropy (SE) of EEG signals also increased after training. The results of this study confirm that NMES training can enhance CMFC and brain activation during standing balance. This study, from the perspective of physiological electrical signals, validates the effectiveness of NMES for balance training and provides objective assessment metrics for the training effects of NMES.

9.The effect of visual-vestibular sensory input consistency on standing stability and electroencephalogram brain network characteristics in the elderly.

Aging is a crucial factor influencing postural stability control and contributing to frequent falls, yet its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aims to explore the effects of aging on postural stability control by comparing differences in postural stability and node strength of electroencephalogram (EEG) brain network between elderly and young people under the conditions of congruent and incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs. Eighteen elderly volunteers without neuromuscular disorders and eighteen young individuals participated in the present study. Virtual reality (VR) technology was employed to manipulate visual rotation stimuli (clockwise and counterclockwise), and a horizontal rotating platform was used for vestibular rotation stimuli (clockwise). Based on the directional disparity of sensory input in the horizontal plane, visual-vestibular input consistency was categorized as congruent and incongruent. Postural stability was assessed by the center of pressure (COP) trajectory, and EEG signals were collected and analyzed using directed network analysis to observe EEG brain network node connectivity strength. The results revealed that, under conditions of incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs, the elderly exhibited significantly inferior postural stability performance in terms of COP anterior-posterior (Y-axial) sway speed, total path length, anterior-posterior and medial-lateral sample entropy, compared to the young adults. Moreover, the node connectivity strength of visual cortex in the elderly was notably higher, while node connectivity strength of superior temporal cortex was significantly lower than that in the young adults. These findings suggest that the elderly have a heightened reliance on visual information in postural control and an impaired ability to cope with sensory conflicts arising from incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs, leading to compromised postural stability. The outcomes of this study hold significant implications for future assessments of balance function in the elder and fall prevention trainings.

10.Time-related association between fluid balance and prognosis in sepsis patients: a cohort study based on MIMIC-IV database.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate time-related association between fluid balance and prognosis in sepsis patients.
METHODS:
A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on the data of sepsis patients in the Medical Information Database for Intensive Care-IV 2.0 (MIMIC-IV 2.0) from 2008 to 2019. Sepsis patients aged ≥ 18 years who were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) for at least 2 days were included. The daily fluid balance and cumulative fluid balance (CFB) were calculated from days 1 to 7 after ICU admission. According to CFB,the patients were divided into negative fluid balance group (CFB% < 0%), fluid balance group (0% ≤ CFB% ≤ 10%), and fluid overload group (CFB% > 10%). In-hospital mortality was the primary outcome. Multifactorial Logistic regression was used to analyze time-related association between different CFB and the risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis during 7 days after ICU admission. In addition, subgroup analysis was performed on patients with septic shock and patients with sepsis who stayed in the ICU for 7 days or longer.
RESULTS:
A total of 11 437 patients with sepsis were included, of which 6 595 were male and 4 842 were female. The mean age was (64.4±16.4) years. A total of 10 253 patients (89.6%) survived and 1 184 patients (10.4%) died during hospitalization. Compared with the survival group, patients in the death group were older, lighter, had higher sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), simplified acute physiology score II (SAPS II), longer ICU stay, higher incidence of septic shock, and higher proportion of invasive mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy (RRT) and vasoactive drugs. In terms of comorbidities, congestive heart failure, renal disease, liver disease, and malignancy were more common in the death group. The death group had a higher daily fluid balance than the survival group during 7 days after ICU admission, the CFB in the two groups gradually increased with length of ICU stay. After adjusting variables such as age, gender, race, SOFA score, SAPS II score, comorbidities, and the use of invasive mechanical ventilation, RRT and vasoactive drugs, multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that fluid overload on day 1 after ICU admission was a protective factor for the reduced risk of in-hospital mortality in sepsis patients [odds ratio (OR) = 0.74, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was 0.64-0.86, P = 0.001]. However, fluid overload on day 3 was a risk factor for in-hospital mortality in sepsis patients (OR = 1.70, 95%CI was 1.47-1.97, P < 0.001) and the risk of in-hospital mortality was significantly increased from day 4 to day 7. Furthermore, the same results were obtained in patients with septic shock and sepsis patients who stayed in the ICU for 7 days or longer.
CONCLUSIONS
Fluid overload on day 1 was associated with reduced in-hospital mortality. However, from the third day, fluid overload increases the risk of in-hospital mortality. Thus, managing fluid balance at different times may improve prognosis.
