ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of artemisinin (ART) on histopathological damage and salivary secretion in the submandibular gland (SMG) of mice with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) model, and on the expression of aquaporin 5 (AQP5) in SMG cells. MethodsThe NOD/Ltj mice were used as a model of SS and randomly divided into the SS model group, the ART group, and the hydroxychloroquine sulfate (HCQ) group, with six mice per group. Another 6 female BALB/c mice at the same week were selected as the control group. Mice in the ART group was fed with the ART solution daily in the dosage of 50 mg·kg-1,and mice in the HCQ group was given with the HCQ solution (1 300 mg·kg-1). Mice in the SS model and control groups were given saline daily. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks. The 24-hour average water intake, salivary flow rate,SMG pathology scores of mice in each group were measured,as well as the expression levels of AQP5 protein and gene in the SMG tissues. ResultsCompared with the control group, the 24-hour average water intake of mice in the model group was significantly increased (P<0.01),and the saliva flow rate was significantly decreased (P<0.01). Compared to the SS model group, the 24-hour average water intake of mice in the ART and HCQ groups was significantly reduced (P<0.01),and the salivary flow rate was significantly increased in the ART group(P<0.01),comparisons between groups showed that the ART was superior to the HCQ in reducing water intake and improving saliva flow rate in SS model mice (P<0.05). The HE staining results showed that, compared with the normal group, the number of lymphocyte infiltration foci in SMG tissue in the model group increased, and the pathological score increased (P<0.01). Compared to the SS model group, after the intervention of the ART and HCQ,the number of lymphocytic infiltration foci in the SMG tissue decreased, the area of the lymphocytic infiltration foci was reduced, and the pathology score of the SMG tissues was lowered in the ART group(P<0.01). However, there was no difference in pathological scores between the ART and HCQ groups . The results of IHC,Western blot, and Real-time PCR showed that, compared with the normal group, the expression levels of AQP5 protein and gene in SMG tissue in the model group significantly decreased (P<0.05). Comparing with the SS model group, the ART and HCQ groups could significantly up-regulated the expression levels of AQP5 protein and mRNA in the SMG tissue, and the treatment effect was better than that of HCQ. ConclusionART was able to ameliorate SMG structural damage and salivary secretion function in SS model mice, and its mechanism of action may be related to the up-regulation of AQP5 protein and gene expression levels in SMG cells.

Journal of Preventive Medicine 2025;37(12):1292-1296
Objective:
To investigate the scientific research capacity building of administrative offices of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCs) across 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities), the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and 5 separately listed cities in China, so as to provide the reference for improving the positioning of office functions and promoting the enhancement of scientific research capabilities.
Methods:
A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among heads and staff members of administrative offices in 37 CDCs. Data on office setup, general information, staffing, scientific research incentive measures and outputs were collected and analyzed.
Results:
The 37 administrative offices of the CDCs had an average authorized staffing size of 12 personnel. There were 17 of them setting independently allocated budgets. A total of 511 staff members were surveyed, comprising 238 males and 273 females, resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 0.87∶1. In terms of educational attainment, the majority held bachelor's degrees (225 individuals, 44.03%) or master's degrees and above (157 individuals, 30.72%). Professional technical personnel constituted the main occupational category, 302 individuals accounting for 59.10%. Intermediate professional titles were most common, 138 individuals accounting for 27.00%. From 2021 to 2023, a total of 68 research incentive measures have been implemented, and 579 personnel have received further training. These offices cumulatively led or participated in 80 scientific research projects and published 253 papers. Sixteen offices reported 10 and above scientific research outputs. These offices generally exhibited higher proportions of independently allocated budgets, greater numbers of senior professional titles, more staff with master's degrees or above, more implemented research incentive measures, and higher frequencies of staff further trainings.
Conclusions
The staff in the administrative offices of CDCs generally have a high level of educational attainment and include a significant number of professional technical personnel. However, their scientific research capacity remains relatively underdeveloped. It is recommended to conduct targeted professional training and research-focused lectures to enhance research literacy, leverage the strengths of multidisciplinary backgrounds, and promote cross-departmental and cross-institutional scientific research activities.

Chinese Journal of Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetology 2025;31(3):283-286
Objective:To analyze the effects of the classic skin reset method and the modified skin reset method in correcting epicanthus. Methods:A retrospective study was conducted on 61 patients who underwent epicanthoplasty at Daqing Oilfield General Hospital from September 2019 to September 2021. Among them, 54 were female and 7 were male, with ages of 18-47 (25.7±4.6) years. The patients were divided into two groups based on different surgical methods: the classic skin repositioning method (control group, 30 cases) and the modified skin repositioning method (experimental group, 31 cases). Postoperative follow-up was conducted for 6 to 24 months. Photos were taken before the operation and during the follow-up period after the operation, and the inter-pupillary distance (IPD) and intercanthal distance (IED) were measured. For patients who underwent double eyelid surgery simultaneously, the proportion of postoperative outward rotation type effect was compared between the two groups. The incidence of adverse reactions such as visible scars, hypertrophic scars, overcorrection, and under-correction after the operation was recorded. Results:The preoperative and postoperative IED/IPD ratios were 0.63±0.02 and 0.56±0.03 in control group, and 0.64±0.02 and 0.56±0.02 in experimental group, respectively. There was no significant difference in IED/IPD ratio between the two groups before and after surgery (all P>0.05). By intra-group comparison, postoperative IED/IPD ratios were lower in both groups than that before surgery. In the experimental group, 83.9% (26/31) of patients underwent double blepharoplasty, which was higher than that in the control group (16.7%, 5/30) ( P<0.001). In the control group, the incidence of adverse reactions was 33.3% (10/30), including 4 cases of mild under-correction and 6 cases of lower eyelid scar. There was no correction deficiency and no visible scar in the experimental group. No overcorrection, hypertrophic scar and other complications were found in both groups. Conclusion:The modified skin replacement method is effective and can prevent the deficiency of epicanthus correction.

Chinese Journal of Hematology 2025;46(9):860-864
This study retrospectively analyzed data from 25 patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Dongfang Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine from January 2023 to June 2024. Patients receiving sufficient eculizumab treatment for at least 3 months and who completed hemolytic complex (CH50) level testing pre- and post-treatment for 3 and 6 months were selected. Blood routine, biochemistry, and the 50% CH50-related indicators were monitored pre- and post-treatment. Among these patients, 24 completed 6 months of treatment and CH50 testing. After 3 and 6 months of eculizumab treatment, all patients with PNH showed significant improvement in symptoms, with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels decreasing from a baseline of (1 814.4 ± 924.8) U/L to (248.5 ± 61.0) U/L and (239.3 ± 44.8) U/L. Hemoglobin levels increased from a baseline of (73.9±14.4) g/L to (99.9 ± 21.3) g/L and (99.6 ± 19.8) g/L. The baseline CH50 level was (32.4±14.7) %, which decreased to 2.0% (1.0% –8.0% ) and 1.0% (1.0% –4.0% ) at 3 and 6 months posttreatment, respectively. At baseline, a linear correlation was found between CH50 and LDH levels ( P<0.001), and the trend of CH50 changes was significantly lower than LDH at 3 and 6 months post-treatment with eculizumab, with similar trends. However, no linear correlation was observed between CH50 and LDH levels or other parameters at 3 and 6 months of medication. Our case demonstrates that eculizumab is effective for PNH hemolysis treatment. The serum CH50 level may be a biomarker for complement blockade induced by eculizumab, which can, to some extent, reflect the intravascular hemolysis of PNH and the efficacy of eculizumab.
