Laboratory Animal and Comparative Medicine 2025;45(3):349-359
Laboratory animals serve as the cornerstone in life science research, acting as surrogate models for human physiology, pathology, and disease treatment. They play an irreplaceable role in basic research, drug development, and translational medicine. Gut microbiota, a complex microbial community comprising bacteria, fungi, viruses, and unicellular organisms, colonizes the host's intestinal tract and is closely associated with the maintenance of normal physiological metabolism and overall health. Studies have shown that dysbiosis of the gut microbiota can lead to various diseases, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, conducting characteristic analyses of the gut microbial composition of laboratory animals can not only enhance the reliability of experimental outcomes but also facilitate their translational application. Sex differences represent a critical variable in biological research, significantly influencing the physiological functions, metabolic traits, and gut microbial composition of laboratory animals. However, a pronounced sex bias has been widely observed in many biological studies, thereby limiting the generalizability of results. This study focused on ten commonly used laboratory animals in life sciences, including mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, dogs, cats, non-human primates, miniature pigs, and chickens. Their gut microbial composition was summarized and related sex-specific differences of certain species were analyzed. Furthermore, by comparing the gut microbiota of laboratory animals with that of humans, this study offers novel perspectives for comparative medical research. In summary, this study not only deepens researchers' understanding of gut microbiota characteristics and sex-dependent variations across laboratory animal species but also provides practical guidance for selecting appropriate laboratory animals, constructing sex-specific disease models, and interpreting experimental results in scientific studies.

Objective:To explore the clinical efficacy of pelvic floor biofeedback combined with electroacupuncture therapy in the treatment of chronic pelvic floor pain syndrome (CPPS).Methods:Ninety CPPS patients admitted to the Dongguan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated to Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2022 to July 2023 were selected prospectively, and they were divided into two groups by random number table method, each group with 45 cases. The control group received pelvic floor biofeedback treatment alone, while the observation group received pelvic floor biofeedback combined with electroacupuncture treatment. The two groups were treated once a day, 10 times as a course of treatment. After two courses of treatment, the clinical efficacy, pain degree before and after treatment, inflammatory factor levels, SF-36 health questionnaire (SF-36) scores, pelvic floor surface myoelectric parameters, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results:The total effective rate in the observation group after treatment was higher than that in the control group: 95.56% (43/45) vs. 75.56% (34/45), there was statistical difference ( χ2 = 7.28, P<0.05). After treatment, the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, levels of procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the two groups were decreased, and SF-36 scores were increased, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05); the VAS scores, PCT, IL-6 and CRP levels in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, and SF-36 scores was higher than that in the control group: (2.11 ± 0.24) scores vs. (2.87 ± 0.34) scores, (0.92 ± 0.08) ng/L vs. (1.26 ± 0.09) ng/L, (24.08 ± 2.52) μg/L vs. (28.49 ± 3.10) μg/L, (4.55 ± 0.51) mg/L vs. (6.06 ± 0.63) mg/L, (74.55 ± 7.29) scores vs. (70.18 ± 7.80) scores, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). After treatment, the surface muscle potential of pelvic floor muscle were increased in the front resting stage, rapid contraction stage, tension contraction stage, endurance contraction stage and post-resting stage, and the above parameters in the observation group were higher than those in the control group: (3.56 ± 0.34)μV vs.(3.20 ± 0.37) μV, (35.26 ± 3.05) μV vs. (31.47 ± 3.08) μV, (34.22 ± 3.25) μV vs. (31.15 ± 3.01)μV, (29.77 ± 3.17) μV vs. (27.04 ± 2.68) μV, (3.21 ± 0.27) μV vs. (3.00 ± 0.34) μV, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). The incidence rate of adverse reactions in the two groups had no statistical difference ( P>0.05). Conclusions:Pelvic floor biofeedback combined with electroacupuncture in the treatment of CPPS has good clinical effect, and can relief pain response, regulate the inflammatory response and pelvic floor function, and have high safety.

Objective To evaluate the regulatory effects of psilocybin on social behavior of male C57BL/6J mice. Methods Adult male C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with psilocybin(0.2,1 and 5 mg/kg,i.p.),and the effects of psilocybin on prosocial behavior were evaluated by the three-chamber test.Stressed mice undergoing chronic social defeat stress(CSDS)were given acute intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin(1 mg/kg)to evaluate the moderation of social novelty preference behavior using the modified two-chamber test. Results Intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin(1 mg/kg)promoted prosocial behavior and prolonged social time(P<0.01),while intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin(0.2 mg/kg)had no apparent effect on the prosocial behavior of mice, and intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin(5 mg/kg)inhibited prosocial behavior before promoting it.Further studies showed that intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin(1 mg/kg)increased the social novelty exploration time in stressed mice undergoing CSDS.Conclusion This study shows that 1 mg/kg dose of psilocybin can promote the prosocial behavior in mice, and potentially ameliorate the deficit of social novelty preference behavior in CSDS mice.

Traditional open head and neck surgery often leaves permanent scars, significantly affecting appearance. The emergence of surgical robots has introduced a new era for minimally invasive surgery. However, the complex anatomy of the head and neck region, particularly the oral and maxillofacial areas, combined with the high costs associated with established systems such as the da Vinci, has limited the widespread adoption of surgical robots in this field.Recently, surgical robotic platform in China has developed rapidly, exemplified by the promise shown by the KangDuo Surgical Robot(KD-SR).Although the KD-SR has achieved some results comparable to the da Vinci surgical robot in urology and colorectal surgery, its performance in complex head and neck regions remains untested. This study evaluated the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of the newly developed KD-SR-01,comparing it with standard endoscopic systems in head and neck procedures on porcine models. We performed parotidectomy, submandibular gland resection, and neck dissection, collected baseline characteristics, perioperative data, and specifically assessed cognitive workload using the NASA-TLX.None of the robotic procedures were converted to endoscopic or open surgery. The results showed no significant difference in operation time between the two groups(P=0.126),better intraoperative bleeding control(P=0.001),and a significant reduction in cognitive workload(P<0.001)in the robotic group. In conclusion, the KD-SR-01 is feasible, effective, and safe for head and neck surgery.Further investigation through well-designed clinical trials with long-term follow-up is necessary to establish the full potential of this emerging robotic platform.
