High mobility group box protein 1(HMGB1)is one of the most widely expressed protein member in the HMGs family, which is well known for its involvement in the body inflammatory response.Previous researches have found that it plays a significant role in cell migration, immune identification and neuroprotection.Spinal cord injury is a disease that causes severe damage to the nervous system, and neural circuits are disrupted after a spinal cord injury, which leads to many conditions including ischemia and hypoxia, inflammatory responses, demyelinating lesions, and glial scar formation that are detrimental to nerve regeneration and repair, making it one of the most difficult diseases to treat in the modern spinal surgery field.HMGB1 is upregulated after spinal cord injury, thereby regulating neuroinflam-matory responses, and participating in the neuronal apoptosis, promoting neuronal regeneration, and inducing neural stem cell differentiation and migration, which plays an important role in the process of neural function recovery. This paper summarizes the structure and function of HMGB1,as well as its role in spinal cord injury,in order to provide direction for founding therapeutic target for neurological function recovery after spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND:Radiotherapy for head and neck tumors can easily cause xerostomia, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. In recent years, engineered stem cells and their paracrine factors have shown therapeutic potential in the repair of salivary gland injury. However, there is currently no experimental study on the application of amniotic mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosome in radiation-induced salivary gland injury.OBJECTIVE:To preliminarily explore the repair effect of exosome derived from human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells on radiation-induced submandibular gland injury.METHODS:H uman amniotic mesenchymal stem cell exosomes were extracted and identified by ultrafiltration and ultracentrifugation.SD rats were randomly divided into a control group,a radiation injury group, and a radiation injury+exosome group. An in vitro model of radiation-induced submandibular gland injury was constructed using the submandibular gland tissue of SD rats irradiated with 18 Gy of radiation. One day after radiation modeling, exosome derived from human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells was injected into the submandibular gland in situ.Samples are taken at 1,3,7,and 14 days to detect the resting salivary flow rate. The structure of the submandibular gland tissue was observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. The expression of glycogen particles in the submandibular gland tissue was observed by Periodic Acid-Schiff staining.Fibrosis in the submandibular gland tissue was observed by Masson staining. The secretion of salivary amylase was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of aquaporin and tight junction proteins in submandibular gland tissue was observed by immunofluorescence staining.Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR was used to detect the relative expression levels of aquaporins and salivary amylase mRNA in submandibular gland tissue.TUNEL assay was used to detect the apoptosis rate of submandibular gland tissues in each group.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:After radiomodeling, compared with the radiation injury group,(1)hematoxylin-eosin staining observed that the submandibular gland tissue structure in the radiation injury+exosome group was restored, the nucleoli increased, the number of acinus increased, and the acinar atrophy improved.(2)Glycogen staining observed that the number and density of positive zymogen granules in the acinar cytoplasm of the radiation injury+exosome group gradually increased.(3)Masson staining results observed that the number and density of positive collagen fibers in the interstitium and around the ducts in the radiation injury+exosome group gradually decreased, the degree of fibrosis decreased, and the collagen deposition decreased.(4)The salivary flow rate in the radiation injury+exosome group increased(P<0.05).The fluorescence intensity of aquaporin-5 was enhanced(P<0.05)and the gene expression was significantly enhanced(P<0.01).The fluorescence distribution of tight junction protein 4 was weakened and the fluorescence intensity decreased(P<0.05,P<0.01).The content of salivary amylase increased(P<0.05)and gene expression were significantly increased(P<0.01).The number of positive apoptotic cells decreased(P<0.05,P<0.01).It is indicated that local injection of exosome derived from human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells could improve the pathological morphology of submandibular gland tissue, promote saliva flow rate and amylase expression, and may play a functional repair role in radioactive submandibular gland injury by inhibiting acinar apoptosis.

Aim To explore the mechanisms of PM2.5 exposure exacerbating bleomycin(BLM)-induced idio-pathic pulmonary fibrosis(IFP)by regulating ferropto-sis via nuclear factor 2 related factor 2(Nrf2)/solute carrier family 7 member 11(SLC7A11)/glutathione peroxidase(GPX)4 axis. Methods Forty C57BL/6J mice were randomized into the control,BLM,PM2.5,BLM+PM2.5 and sulforaphane(SFN,Nrf2 agonist)groups, with eight mice in each group.PM2.5 expo-sures were conducted to the BLM-induced IPF mice for two weeks. The lung function was measured, and the content of hydroxyproline(HYP)in lung tissue and the pathomorphology of lungs were observed.Reactive oxygen species(ROS),malondialdehyde(MDA),ferrous ion(Fe2+)and glutathione(GSH)of the lung tissue were measured by ELISA.The mRNA and pro-teins levels of Nrf2,SLC7A11,GPX4,collagen typeⅠ(COL-1),α-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)and Western blot. Results Compared with the control group, the lung function of mice was signif-icantly reduced(P<0.01)in the BLM and PM2.5 groups, while lung tissue showed the characteristic pathological changes of pulmonary fibrosis such as a large number of inflammatory cell infiltration, alveolar wall fracture, thickening, collagen deposition, and sig-nificantly increased HYP,Fe2+,ROS,MDA(P<0.05,P<0.01),genes and proteins of COL-1,α-SMA(P<0.01);and decreased GSH,Nrf2,SLC7A11,GPX4 genes and proteins(P<0.05,P<0.01).The above-mentioned lesions were markedly aggravated in the BLM+PM2.5 group compared with the BLM(P<0.05)and PM2.5 groups(P<0.01),and were also improved in the SFN group(P<0.05,P<0.01).Conclusions PM2.5 exposures can exac-erbate IPF-induced IPF in mice, and the regulating of Nrf2/SLC7 A1 1/GPX4 axis and ferroptosis might be in-volved in the related mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE:
This study explored the job choice preferences of Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) workers to provide CDC management information and recommendations for optimizing employee retention and motivation policies.
METHODS:
A discrete choice experiment was conducted in nine provinces across China. Seven key attributes were identified to analyze the job preferences of CDC workers. Mixed logit models, latent class models, and policy simulation tools were used.
RESULTS:
A valid sample of 5,944 cases was included in the analysis. All seven attributes significantly influenced the job choices of CDC workers. Heterogeneity analyses identified two main groups based on different levels of preference for attribute utility. Income-prioritizers were concerned with income and opportunities for career development, whereas bianzhi-prioritizers were concerned with bianzhi and welfare benefits. The policy simulation analysis revealed that income-prioritizers had a relatively higher sensitivity to multiple job preference incentives.
CONCLUSION
Income and bianzhi were the two key attributes influencing the job choices and retention preferences of CDC workers. Heterogeneity in job preferences was also identified. Based on the preference characteristics of different subgroups, policy content should be skewed to differentiate the importance of incentives.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2025;38(10):1179-1193
OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to explore the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality based on the 10-year population-based multicenter prospective study.
METHODS:
A general population-based multicenter prospective study was conducted at four sites in rural China between 2013 and 2023. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to assess the association between BMI and mortality. Stratified analyses were performed based on the individual characteristics of the participants.
RESULTS:
Overall, 19,107 participants with a sum of 163,095 person-years were included and 1,910 participants died. The underweight (< 18.5 kg/m 2) presented an increase in all-cause mortality (adjusted hazards ratio [ aHR] = 2.00, 95% confidence interval [ CI]: 1.66-2.41), while overweight (≥ 24.0 to < 28.0 kg/m 2) and obesity (≥ 28.0 kg/m 2) presented a decrease with an aHR of 0.61 (95% CI: 0.52-0.73) and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.37-0.70), respectively. Overweight ( aHR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.67-0.86) and mild obesity ( aHR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59-0.87) had a positive impact on mortality in people older than 60 years. All-cause mortality decreased rapidly until reaching a BMI of 25.7 kg/m 2 ( aHR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.98) and increased slightly above that value, indicating a U-shaped association. The beneficial impact of being overweight on mortality was robust in most subgroups and sensitivity analyses.
CONCLUSION
This study provides additional evidence that overweight and mild obesity may be inversely related to the risk of death in individuals older than 60 years. Therefore, it is essential to consider age differences when formulating health and weight management strategies.

Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae 2025;47(5):738-743
Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of transrectal contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for rectal cancer with intestinal stenosis caused by tumors. Methods Forty-nine patients with rectal cancer underwent transrectal CEUS and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before surgery.Intraoperative tumor localization and postoperative pathological results were taken as the gold standard for diagnosis. The differences in T stage, localization, and tumor length of rectal cancer were compared between the two methods. Results The total accuracy rates of transrectal CEUS and MRI in diagnosing T stage were 75.5% (36/49) and 67.3% (33/49),which had no significant difference (χ2=0.8,P=0.371).The total accuracy rates of transrectal CEUS and MRI in judging tumor localization were 79.5% (39/49) and 77.5% (38/49),which had no significant difference (χ2=0.061,P=0.806).The measurement results of tumor length in pathological examination had no significant difference from the transrectal CEUS results (t=1.42,P=0.162) but a significant difference from the MRI results (t=3.38,P=0.001).Furthermore,transrectal CEUS detected 8 (16.3%) cases of colonic polyps among the 49 patients, while MRI did not detect colon lesions. Conclusions Transrectal CEUS has good consistency with MRI in T staging and localization judgement of rectal cancer with intestinal stenosis, and this method can more accurately evaluate the tumor length and simultaneously evaluate whether there is a lesion in the entire colon at the proximal end of stenosis. It can be used as a supplementary examination before rectal cancer treatment in clinical practice.
