Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy (AB-BNCT) in the treatment of recurrent and refractory malignant tumors. Methods:The data of 14 patients admitted to Xiamen Humanity Hospital from September 2022 to April 2023 were prospectively collected, including 7 patients with primary brain malignancies and 7 patients with locally recurrent inoperable head and neck malignancies. All patients received intravenous infusion of boron drug (NBB-001, p-dihydroxyborylphe nylalanine, a patented freeze-dried formulation) at a total nominal dosage of 500 mg/kg (11 patients) or 750 mg/kg (3 patients), and were irradiated with neutrons (operating with NeuPex system). Adverse events after treatment were recorded and assessed. The primary efficacy endpoint was the 90 d objective response rate (ORR), while the secondary endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS) and complete response rate (CRR). Data were compiled and analyzed by SAS 9.4 software. The rate and 95% CI were calculated using Clopper-Pearson method. Results:The median dose delivered to 80% of the target volume (D 80%) was 16.80 GyE (range: 8.93-23.79 GyE). The most common adverse reactions were hyperamylasemia, alopecia, and hyperprolactinemia. Five patients experienced 8 cases of grade 3 or above adverse events, including 1 case of grade 4 acute kidney injury and 7 cases of grade 3 adverse events. All adverse events were recovered after observation or treatment. At 90 d after treatment, the ORR of all patients was 9/14 (64%, 95% CI: 35%-87%), disease control rate (DCR) was 10/14 (71%, 95% CI: 42%-92%), CRR was 2/14 (14%, 95% CI: 2%-42%); and the best overall response during the entire course included an ORR of 10/14 (71% ,95% CI: 42%-92%), DCR of 13/14 (93%, 95% CI: 66%-100%), and CRR of 3/14 (21% ,95% CI: 5%-51%). The 1-year survival rate for head and neck malignancies was 71.4%, and the 2-year survival rate was 42.8%. The 1-year survival rate for recurrent brain malignancies was 42.8%. Conclusion:AB-BNCT demonstrates favorable safety and promising efficacy in treating primary brain malignancies and recurrent/refractory head and neck malignancies, representing a potential therapeutic option.

Objective:
To evaluate the efficacy of a self-developed mobile augmented reality navigation system (MARNS) in guiding spinal level positioning during intraspinal tumor surgery based on a dual-error theory.
Methods:
This retrospective study enrolled patients diagnosed with intraspinal tumors admitted to Fujian Provincial Hospital between May and November 2023. The participants were divided into conventional x-rays and self-developed MARNS groups according to the localization methods they received. Position time, length of intraoperative incision variation, and location accuracy were systematically compared.
Results:
A total of 41 patients (19 males) with intraspinal tumors were included, and MARNS was applied to 21 patients. MARNS achieved successful lesion localization in all patients with an error of 0.38±0.12 cm. Compared to x-rays, MARNS significantly reduced positioning time (129.00±13.03 seconds vs. 365.00±60.43 seconds, p<0.001) and length of intraoperative incision variation (0.14 cm vs. 0.67 cm, p=0.009).
Conclusion
The self-developed MARNS, based on augmented reality technology for lesion visualization and perpendicular projection, offers a radiation-free complement to conventional x-rays.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in pediatric care has a long history, proven efficacy, and distinctive characteristics. The China Association of Chinese Medicine has organized a series of youth salons to discuss the clinical advantages of treating diseases.Experts at this seminar proposed that the superior disease categories in pediatric TCM are significant for showcasing the unique strengths and advantages of TCM in the treatment of pediatric diseases, enhancing diagnostic and treatment levels, inheriting TCM knowledge, promoting the integration of TCM and Western medicine, and meeting patients' needs. The strengths of pediatric TCM are summed up as "having what others do not, excelling at what others have, being special in what others excel at,and ensuring safety in what others specialize in." The scope of superiority in pediatric TCM covers multiple systems, including respiratory, digestive, endocrine, psychological, and dermatological systems. This article summarized the advantages of TCM in treating 13 diseases discussed in the salon, such as upper respiratory tract infections, coughs, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, functional dyspepsia, functional constipation, enuresis, marginal short stature, simple obesity, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and tic disorders. The overall advantages were reflected in three aspects:First, the holistic concept and treatment based on syndrome differentiation in TCM highlight the advantage of treating the root causes of diseases, making the treatment methodical and precise.Second, most traditional Chinese herbs are natural and have strong safety profiles.Third,TCM treatment methods are abundant, especially the external treatment methods, which are widely used in pediatrics, highly accepted by parents, and have definite efficacy,as well as good safety and compliance.

Journal of Modern Laboratory Medicine 2024;39(4):170-174
Objective To investigate the expression of serum vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1(VEGFR-1)and macrophage inflammatory protein-3α(MIP-3α)in patients with endometriosis(EMs)patients and the predictive value of their combined detection for postoperative recurrence in EMs patients. Methods A total of 114 patients with EMs who underwent laparoscopic surgery in Maternal and Child Care Hospital of Qinhuangdao from April 2019 to June 2021 were selected as the observation group, while 114 healthy medical checkups of women of gestational age who had their medical checkups in the hospital were selected as the control group during the same period.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was used to determine the serum levels of VEGFR-1 and MIP-3α in the patients.According to the postoperative period of 2 years, they were divided into the recurrence group(n=78)and the non-recurrence group(n=36).Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze influencing factors of postoperative recurrence in patients with EMs.The predictive value of the combined serum VEGFR-1 and MIP-3α test for postoperative recurrence in patients with EMs was analyzed by using the receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC)curve. Results Compared with the control group, the levels of VEGFR-1 in the observation group(116.25±48.57 pg/ml vs 92.43±25.37 pg/ml)and MIP-3α(19.25±5.24 pg/ml vs 13.67±4.28 pg/ml)were elevated, and the differences were significant(t=4.641,8.806,all P<0.05).The level of VEGFR-1(104.22±5.78 pg/ml,118.60±6.56 pg/ml,138.55±7.85 pg/ml)and the level of MIP-3α(15.37±1.15 pg/ml,19.28±2.12 pg/ml,25.42±2.56 pg/ml)in mild, moderate and severe EMs patients were increased successively, and the differences were significant(F=147.757,133.654,all P<0.001).The percentage of the presence of palpable nodules in the posterior fornix,r-AFS staging(stage Ⅲ~Ⅳ)in the recurrence group was greater than those in the non-recurrence group(x2=15.139,10.310,all P<0.05),and the percentage of the recurrence group with postoperative medication for 6 months or more was lower than that of the non-recurrence group(x2=15.016,P<0.001),and the differences were statistically significant, respectively.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum VEGFR-1,MIP-3α,the presence of palpable nodules in the posterior fornix and r-AFS staging were risk factors for postoperative recurrence of EMs(all P<0.05),while postoperative medication for 6 months or more was a protective factor(P<0.05).The ROC curves showed that the area under the curve(AUC)of the combination of serum VEGFR-1 and MIP-3αpredicted postoperative EMs for postoperative recurrence was the largest(0.929),and its sensitivity and specificity were 85.90%and 86.11%,respectively.Conclusion VEGFR-1 and MIP-3α expression was elevated in the serum of patients with EMs.The efficacy of their combined detection in predicting recurrence after EMs could be better.
