Background: While advanced age is a known risk factor for postoperative complications following hip arthroplasty, its role as an independent predictor versus a surrogate for comorbidity remains unclear, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to investigate the independent impact of age on postoperative outcomes and explore the mediating role of key comorbidities in a resource-limited setting. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 769 adult patients undergoing hip arthroplasty at a Vietnamese tertiary hospital (2021–2024), categorized into three groups: younger adults (18–64 years), older adults (65–79 years), and oldest old (≥80 years). The primary outcome was a composite of major postoperative complications. Multivariable logistic regression and structural equation modeling were used to identify independent predictors and assess mediation effects. Results: Among 769 patients, 363 were younger (47.2%), 241 older adults (31.3%), and 165 oldest old (21.5%). Complication rates increased significantly with age (18.7%, 36.9%, and 60.0%, respectively; p<0.001). However, multivariable adjustment showed that age was not an independent predictor. Instead, heart failure (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=5.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.19–13.74) and preoperative anemia (aOR=1.77, 95% CI 1.21– 2.59) were identified as independent risk factors. Mediation analysis revealed that the effect of age on complications was significantly mediated through preoperative anemia. Conclusion Increased postoperative risk in older adults is driven by comorbidity burden rather than chronological age. Preoperative anemia and heart failure are critical, independent predictors, with anemia acting as a key mediator for the effects of age. Individualized correction of modifiable comorbidities may be more beneficial than using age alone to assess surgical risk.

BACKGROUND: Acellular tubular artery scaffolds offer structural support for vascular regeneration but are inherently limited by poor anticoagulant properties, which increases the risk of thrombus formation following implantation. This thrombogenicity remains a major obstacle to their clinical application, particularly in small-diameter vascular grafts. METHODS: To address this challenge, the present study investigates the use of the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly technique for heparin immobilization under low-speed rotation. Utilizing a roller tube system, heparin was immobilized onto decellularized scaffolds through electrostatic interactions facilitated by a DHI-based linker. This low-speed rotation LbL approach enhanced the uniformity and stability of heparin deposition compared to traditional static methods. One, 4, 7, 10, 13 deposition cycles were performed to achieve optimal heparin loading, resulting in scaffolds capable of sustained heparin release over 28 days. RESULTS: The heparinized scaffolds exhibited an initial burst release (approximately 80%), followed by a sustained phase with 18.24% ± 0.242 remaining to support prolonged anticoagulant activity. Importantly, the modified scaffolds significantly reduced thrombus formation and exhibited minimal hemolytic activity, indicating improved hemocompatibility. In addition to their antithrombotic properties, the scaffolds also promoted endothelial cell adhesion, which is critical for restoring vascular integrity, regulating vascular tone, and maintaining long-term patency. CONCLUSION These findings highlight the efficacy of roller-assisted LbL heparinization as a practical and scalable strategy to enhance the blood compatibility of acellular vascular grafts. This method holds considerable promise for addressing thrombogenicity in vascular tissue engineering and advancing the clinical translation of bioengineered vascular constructs.

Objective: The risk of transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from schoolchildren to their household and the protective effects of vaccination in these settings remain poorly understood. We assessed the transmission dynamics of schoolchildren with SARS-CoV-2 within their households and the protective effects of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination among household members in Viet Nam. Methods: We estimated the attack rate, vaccine effectiveness and adjusted risk ratio (aRR) of factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 transmission to household contacts of children confirmed to have COVID-19 who attended three schools in Ha Nam, Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces between September and December 2021 using multivariable regression with household-level random effects. Results: This retrospective cohort study included 157 children infected with SARS-CoV-2 and their 540 household contacts. The attack rate among household contacts was 24.6% (133/540). Overall, vaccine effectiveness among household contacts was 39% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -1 to -63), higher among males than females and higher in adults aged >40 years. COVID-19 transmission was greater among female household contacts compared with males (aRR: 1.35, 95% CI: 0.94 to 1.95), although not statistically significant, and highest among those aged 19–39 years (aRR: 2.51, 95% CI: 1.50 to 4.21). Fully vaccinated household contacts had significantly lower infection risk (aRR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.84). Discussion: We found substantial onward transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from schoolchildren to household members, and older people were more likely to be protected by vaccination. We recommend that schoolchildren and all household members living with schoolchildren receive at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Recognizing the role of schoolchildren in the onward transmission of COVID-19 is an important lesson learned by Viet Nam that can help not only in managing other outbreaks but also in protecting schoolchildren by predicting the progress of the outbreak and preparing for a timely response.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize mental health issues among Vietnamese healthcare workers (HCWs) and to identify related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 990 HCWs in 2021. Their mental health status was measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. Results: In total, 49.9%, 52.3%, and 29.8% of respondents were found to have depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively. The multivariable linear regression model revealed that factors associated with increased anxiety scores included depression scores (β, 0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.39 to 0.51) and stress scores (β, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.41 to 0.52). Factors associated with increased depression scores included being frontline HCWs (β, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.10 to 1.10), stress scores (β, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.45 to 0.56), and anxiety scores (β, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.47), while working experience was associated with reduced depression scores (β, -0.08; 95% CI, -0.16 to -0.01). Factors associated with increased stress scores included working experience (β, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.00 to 0.16), personal protective equipment interference with daily activities (β, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.07 to 1.00), depression scores (β, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.48 to 0.59), and anxiety scores (β, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.50), while age was associated with reduced stress scores (β, -0.12; 95% CI, -0.20 to -0.05). Conclusions Specific interventions are necessary to enhance and promote the mental health of HCWs so they can successfully cope with the circumstances of the pandemic.

STRESS IN RELATIONSHIP WITH BURNOUT DUE TO COVID-19: THE MODERATING ROLE OF COPING STRATEGIES This study investigates the relationship between stress and burnout related to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the moderating influence of positive and negative coping strategies. In a cross-sectional survey involving 3,664 Vietnamese citizens aged 18 and above, the research explores the dynamics of stress and burnout symptoms associated with the ongoing pandemic. The results reveal a negative impact of stress symptoms on COVID-19-related burnout among the population. Notably, both positive and negative coping strategies are identified as significant moderators in the interplay between stress and burnout. This suggests that individuals’ coping mechanisms influence the severity of stress and burnout experienced in dealing with COVID-19 challenges. These findings contribute to the foundational understanding of the stress-burnout relationship during the pandemic and provide essential insights for interventions. By recognizing the moderating role of coping strategies, this study lays the groundwork for strategies aimed at enhancing individuals’ coping abilities, ultimately reducing stress and burnout levels. These insights hold the potential to assist individuals in adapting more effectively to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, fostering improved mental well-being in the face of ongoing uncertainties. FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH VIETNAMESE STUDENTS’ SELF-PERCEIVED MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has stated the critical importance of addressing the mental health care needs of students. With the abrupt and extensive changes brought about by the pandemic, such as lockdowns and shifts to online learning, students worldwide faced significant psychological challenges. This context led to a comprehensive study focusing on Vietnamese students, aiming to understand their perceptions of mental health amidst these unprecedented times. The research specifically targeted the initial lockdown phase, seeking to describe the prevalence of mental health issues and identify the factors contributing to these problems among students in Vietnam. By examining these aspects, the study aimed to provide insights into the mental well-being of students during a major global crisis. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1889 students in North and South Vietnam from 30 August, 2021 to 5 September, 2021. Socio-demographic information was collected via an online survey and the SF-12 Mental Composite Score (MCS) was used to assess self-perceived mental health problems. The study results show that the prevalence of selfperceived mental health problems, defined by an MCS<1st quartile, was 21.9% (95%CI: 20%-23.8%) among students during the COVID-19 lockdown. Regression models indicated that the following factors were significantly related to self-perceived mental health problems: Female sex, not living with family, financial difficulty, decreased health status, decreased academic performance and decreased social relationships during the COVID-19 lockdown. The study showed that many factors related to student’s self-perceived mental health problems during COVID-19, affecting a significant number of students. Sphaeranthus africanus is commonly used as a traditional remedy for sore throats and pain treatment in Vietnam. The aerial parts have been studied for its anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative properties. However, the antioxidant and antidiabetic potential of the plant has not been explored. In this work, hydrophilic extracts of the plant's aerial parts were prepared in order to investigate its antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties. Also, the cytotoxicity of the root was evaluated and compared to that of the aerial parts. All of the extracts inhibited lipid peroxidation with IC 50 values ranging from 2.05 to 3.56 µg/mL, indicating substantial antioxidant activity. At an IC 50 value of 4.80 μg/mL, the 50% ethanol extract exhibited the most potent inhibition of α-glucosidase. The cytotoxic activity of root extracts is 2 to 5-fold less than that of the aerial parts. Nevertheless, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts of the root demonstrated a selective effect on leukemia cells, with no harm towards the normal HEK-293 cell line. This work provides a scientific support for the antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of the plant. Hence, it may find a promising material for the development of novel antioxidant and antidiabetic agents. More research can be conducted on the phytochemistry and anticancer activities of the plant’s root.

Background: Suicide continues to be a leading cause of death worldwide. Recently, more than 45,000 children in the age group of 10 to 19 years died by suicide, making it the second leading cause of death in the age group of 15 to 19, surpassed only by traffic accidents, tuberculosis, and fighting. Objective: To determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents whose parents are separated/divorced; and to explore the factors associated with suicidal ideation and describe adverse experiences among adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 309 adolescents with separated/separated parents in Hue City. Data was collected through direct interviews using a structured questionnaire. Suicidal ideation was defined as the presence of thoughts or plans related to suicide within the last 12 months. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with suicidal ideation in adolescents with separated/ separated parents. Results: The study found that 15.5% (95% CI:11.7 - 20.1) of adolescents with separated /separated parents reported experiencing suicidal thoughts, in which men accounted 8.4% (95% CI:5.6 – 11.2) and women accounted 7.1% (95% CI:4.5 - 10.6). Several factors were identified as increasing the risk of suicidal ideation, including alcohol use (OR = 3.24; 95% CI:1.42 - 7.42), hyperactivity/inattention (OR = 4.96; 95% CI:1.58 - 15.605), and a poor quality of family relationships (OR = 4.82; 95% CI:1.26 - 18.50). On the contrary, certain factors were found to reduce the risk, including being in the 14-15 age group of 14-15 (OR = 0.26; 95% CI:0.10 - 0.69) and participating in physical activity (OR = 0.44; 95% CI:0.21 – 0.94). Conclusions: The research highlights a significant percentage of adolescents with separated / divided parents who experience suicidal ideation. Therefore, it is imperative for families, schools, and society to develop comprehensive strategies to monitor and address various risky behaviours among students simultaneously.

Background: Vietnamese herbs are considered as a botanical resource, a precious medicinal source of our country, and are widely used in the residential community in general. Phu Vang district is a coastal plain and lagoon in Thua Thien Hue province, where people’s living standards are not high, health facilities lack equipment. Therefore, the needs for primary health care are necessary to be strengthened, especially in the treatment of common diseases using Vietnamese herbs to reduce costs and improve health for the people. However, the knowledge of the local residents about Vietnamese herbs preventing and treating common diseases at home has not been surveyed. Objectives: (1) To describe the knowledge, attitude and practice on the use of Vietnamese herbs used in the treatment of common diseases of residents in some communes of Phu Vang district. (2) To determine some factors related to the use of Vietnamese herbs in the treatment of common diseases among the residents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 residents representing the heads of households in three communes of Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province, Thua Thien Hue province. Descriptive statistical analysis and multivariable logistic regression were performed with SPSS software. Results: Knowledge: Good: 45.2%; Fair: 30.8%; Average: 9.0%; Poor: 2.0%. Attitude: 97.0% of residents preferred using Vietnamese herbs in the treatment of common diseases, and 96.6% of residents agreed to continue using Vietnamese herbs to treat similar diseases later. Practice: Good: 7.8%; Fair: 16.7%; Average: 25.3%; Poor: 50.2%. Receiving information about Vietnamese herbs and growing them at home gardens were two factors related to the use of Vietnamese herbs to treat common diseases (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The practice of using Vietnamese herbs to treat common diseases of the residents in Phu Vang district is still low, it is necessary to strengthen educational propaganda to raise the awareness and practice among residents on the prevention and treatment of diseases with Vietnamese herbs at home.

Background: Lung cancer is a common cancer with a high mortality rate. The identification of prognostic factors in lung cancer patients in Vietnam is still limited and inconsistent in clinical practice. Objectives: To describe the clinical, paraclinical characteristics and m-LCPI index in patients with primary non-small cell lung cancer and evaluate the factors affecting overall survival in patients with primary non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: Prospective study of 210 cases of non-small cell lung cancer diagnosed with primary non-small cell lung cancer at the Oncology Department of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital from February 2020 to February 2023. Results: The majority of hospitalizations were at late stages, from stage IIIA (89%), group 3 and 4 in m-LCPI grading scale constituted the majority (80%). Average overall survival at 3 years was 20.0 ± 14 months, and gradually decreased to 54.8%, 40%, and 38.6% after 1 year, 2 years and 3 years, respectively. Regression analysis of COX model between m-LCPI and OS showed statistical significance with m-LCPI 4 (HR = 3.9, 95%CI = 1.57 - 9.69, p = 0.003), while m-LCPI 3 (HR = 2.44, 95% CI 0.97 - 6.13), p = 0.058) had a weak correlation. Conclusion: Our study shows that 38.6% of patients were still alive after 3 years of diagnosis. m-LCPI index is a good predictor of the patients’ overall survival.
