Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2026;91(1):170-175
Background:
Although isotretinoin has been confirmed by clinical and experimental studies to be a teratogenic agent that causes fetal developmental abnormalities, its effects on placental development and placental-like extra-embryonic vascularization have not been sufficiently studied. The vascularization of the chorioallantoic membrane is structurally and functionally similar to mammalian placental vascularization, which provided the rationale for conducting this study.
Aim:
To study the effect of isotretinoin on chorioallantoic membrane vascularization using an in ovo chick embryo model.
Materials and Methods:
A comparative experimental control study was conducted using fertilized eggs of the same developmental age from Gallus gallus domesticus. At the HH10 embryonic stage, the control group received avian saline, while the experimental group was administered isotretinoin (5 µg/100 µL). Vascularization of the yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane was evaluated at the macro- and tissue levels at 72 and 120 hours of embryonic development. Vessel branching order, vascular density, and capillary number were compared, and statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test.
Result:
In the control group, vascularization progressed actively, with abundant formation of third and fourth order vessels, resulting in a dense reticular network. In contrast, the isotretinoin treated group showed delayed vessel branching, a marked reduction in the number of third- and fourth-order vessels, and an overall decrease in vascular density of 40–60%. Histological analysis revealed thinning of the chorioallantoic membrane, loss of tissue layers, and thinning of vascular walls, and the number of capillaries was significantly lower than in the control group (p<0.01). In addition, the development of chorioallantoic membrane vascularization in chick embryos was found to be structurally and developmentally similar to mammalian placental vascularization.
Conclusion
Isotretinoin was shown to inhibit the development of the chorioallantoic membrane and markedly reduce vascularization and differentiation in an in ovo chick embryo model.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2026;91(1):176-181
Background:
Functional constipation is a common condition in early childhood, with an estimated global prevalence of approximately 3%. In Mongolia, functional constipation has been increasingly diagnosed among young children, particularly those aged 2–6 years. The condition is associated with abdominal pain, bloating, painful defecation, stool retention behaviors, and long-term physical and psychological complications. Although pediatric Tuina massage is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a non-pharmacological intervention, evidence regarding its effectiveness remains limited in the local context.
Aim:
To evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic massage on stool frequency and stool consistency in children with functional constipation.
Materials and Methods:
A randomized controlled study was conducted between May and December 2025 at the “Bomborduk” Pediatric Traditional Medicine Center. Sixty children diagnosed with functional constipation (ICD-10 K59.04) were randomly assigned to a therapeutic massage group (n=30) or an exercise therapy group (n=30). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after one month using the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS) and the Bristol Stool Form Scale.
Result:
The mean age of participants was 3.75±0.94 years, with no significant difference between groups. In the massage therapy group, CAS scores decreased from 8.23±2.39 to 3.17±2.36, while Bristol Stool scores improved from 1.33±0.48 to 3.00±0.87. Improvements were significantly greater in the massage group compared with the exercise therapy group (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
Therapeutic massage is a safe and effective non-pharmacological intervention that significantly improves stool consistency and reduces constipation severity in children with functional constipation.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2026;92(2):82-86
Background:
In the modern era, information technology has become an integral component of the healthcare sector, increasingly requiring healthcare providers to possess basic computer literacy and information technology skills to effectively manage and utilize care delivery technologies. With the rapid digitalization of health information systems across all levels of healthcare facilities, there has been a transition toward electronic platforms, where comprehensive patient data are entered into databases and managed through digital applications. Consequently, the delivery of nursing care through electronic systems and technologies has placed growing demands on nurses to develop strong informatics skills and competencies.
Aim:
To describe the informatics competency of nurses in Mongolia.
Materials and Methods:
A cross-sectional design was used for the study. Data were collected from 233 nurses who use information technology. Study setting was taken from three hospitals including National Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics (NCTO), National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD), Ulaanbaatar Railway Hospital by using convenience sampling method. The self-assessment of Nursing Informatics Competency instrument for evaluating the informatics competence of nurses has 48 questions and is rated on a 1-4 Likert scale. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were calculated using SPSS-25.0
Result:
The quality of life among those with breast cancer was at a moderate level with the mean overall score of 58.8 (SD=13.08). The results of this study shown that the average age of subjects as (36±9.4) and 31.3% of participants were 20-29 years old. The majority of the subjects were 73.4% (n=171) use the computer several times a day, and 81.5% (n=190) use the computer more than 2 hours a day. 51.1% of nurses’ informatics skills are relatively good. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age (β=–0.287, p=0.032) and computer use (β=–0.156, p=0.017) were significant predictors of total informatics competency among nurses. Increasing age was associated with a decrease in informatics competency scores. Other variables including gender, years of experience, education level, professional rank, and computer utilization were not statistically significant predictors.
Conclusion
The level of nurses’ informatics competency was determined to be 51.1%. Age and computer usage were identified as significant factors influencing nurses’ informatics competency.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2026;92(2):134-138
Background:
Type I hypersensitivity, commonly known as an allergic reaction, is characterised by an IgE-mediated immune response triggered when foreign proteins enter the body. During allergic reactions, cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13, secreted by T-helper 2 (Th2) cells, play a crucial role in activating immune effector cells like eosinophils and mast cells, which contribute significantly to airway inflammation and obstruction. Conversely, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), produced by Th1 cells, suppresses Th2-mediated responses and plays an essential role in regulating allergic inflammation. Therefore, determining the balance of cytokines produced by Th1 and Th2 cells is crucial for understanding the mechanisms underlying allergic responses.
Aim:
We aimed to induce an allergic response in experimental animals using ovalbumin and to determine the levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ cytokines using an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Materials and Methods:
A total of 20 female C57BL/6 mice aged 6–8 weeks were selected for the experiment and randomly divided into two groups: control and experimental groups. The concentrations of IL-4 and IFN-γ cytokines in mouse serum were determined using an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Result:
Compared to the control group, the levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ cytokines in the serum of allergic model-induced C57BL/6 mice were determined to be 513.7 pg/mL and 193.2 pg/mL, respectively. A statistically significant difference was observed in IL-4 cytokine levels between the two groups (p < 0.001).
Conclusion
In the allergic model group, serum levels of IL-4 cytokine were elevated, while IFN-γ cytokine levels were decreased, suggesting a predominant Th2-type immune response.

Mongolian Medical Sciences 2026;217(3):43-51
Introduction:
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that noise pollution leads to a variety of
short-term and long-term health issues, including sleep disorders, cardiovascular diseases,
impaired concentration, decreased performance at work and school, and hearing difficulties.
It has been established that for every 10 dB increase in environmental noise, the incidence
of heart attacks among individuals aged 65 and older increases by 3.9% compared to those
living in quieter environments (Seidler, et al., 2016). Furthermore, it has been found that
noise pollution exceeding 65 dB is directly related to hypertension among residents living
along high-traffic roads.
Objective:
To assessing traffic load and noise pollution on the roads of Ulaanbaatar
Materials and Methods:
The study was a cross-sectional survey conducted to determine noise pollution at 15
locations along roads such as Sun Road, Peace Avenue, Ard-Ayush Street, and Ikh Toiruu.
Measurements were taken during morning (7-9 AM), afternoon (12-2 PM), evening (5-7 PM),
and night (11 PM-1 AM) using a Noise Meter, Sound Level Meter, and portable equipment.
Measurements were conducted at one point 100-200 meters from the main road, with three
repetitions to assess hearing levels. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS-24
software, and the results were compared to the Air Quality Technical General Requirements
MNS 4585:2016 standard (During the day (07:00-22:00), 60 dB(A), and at night (22:00
07:00), 45 dB(A)).
Results:
The measurement results revealed that the maximum noise value in the morning (7-9 AM)
was 83 dB(A), the minimum noise value was 51 dB(A), and the average of the maximum
noise values was 74.1±4.7 dB(A). The maximum noise value during the day was 97 dB(A),
the minimum noise value was 47 dB(A), and the average of the maximum noise value was
74.4±6.9 dB(A). In the evening, the maximum noise value was 88 dB(A), the minimum noise
value was 47 dB(A), and the average of the maximum noise value was 74.4±6.6 dB(A). For
the night measurements, the maximum noise value was 86 dB(A), the minimum noise value
was 49 dB(A), and the average of the maximum noise value was 69.4±7.7 dB(A).
When calculating the average noise pollution on weekdays and weekends, the average of
the max and min values during the morning, evening, and night on weekdays was 0.59-4.33
dB(A) higher than that of the weekend. The average maximum value during the day on
weekends was 2.79 dB(A) higher than that of weekdays. The number of vehicles participating
in road traffic showed a strong positive correlation with environmental noise (Rxy=0.660,
p=0.0001), and the number of times the horn was sounded also revealed strong positive
correlation with environmental noise (Rxy=0.674, p=0.029).
Conclusion
The noise level along the main roads exceeds the permissible limits set by the
"Air Quality. Technical General Requirements MNS 4585:2016" standard by 37 dB(A) during
the day and by 41 dB(A) at night. The average maximum value during the day exceeds the
standard by 14.6 dB(A). This indicates that Ulaanbaatar is experiencing noise pollution at
levels that negatively affect the health of the urban population.

Mongolian Medical Sciences 2026;217(3):52-58
Background:
Indoor air quality in schools is an important environmental health concern because children
spend a substantial proportion of their time in classrooms and are particularly vulnerable to
air pollutants.
Objective:
To assess common chemical, and biological pollutants in the indoor air of general education
schools in Ulaanbaatar.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 10, 2025, to March 1, 2026, in 16
purposively selected schools and 32 classrooms across six districts of Ulaanbaatar.
PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, and microclimatic parameters were monitored continuously for seven
days. Volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, BTEX compounds, and radon were also
measured. Airborne microorganisms were assessed using 160 air samples, and 160 surface
swabs were collected. Results were compared with MNS 7106:2026, MNS 5484:2005, and
MNS 6410:2018 standards.
Results:
The mean 24-hour concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 were 25.2 and 36.1 µg/m³, respectively.
PM2.5 exceeded the permissible level during winter and in schools located in apartment
areas, whereas the mean PM10 concentration met the acceptable level. Total bacteria were
detected in all air samples, with a mean concentration of 1,733.25 CFU/m³. Mould and fungi
were detected in 56.3% of classrooms, and enteric bacteria were detected in 4.3% of surface
swabs. Radon levels remained below the permissible limit, and pathogenic bacteria were
not detected. Formaldehyde was detected in all samples, while total VOCs and toluene were
detected in 81.3%; their mean concentrations remained within acceptable levels. In one
classroom, the concentration of benzene was detected approximately 30 times higher the
permissible level.
Conclusion
Although some indoor air-quality indicators met the relevant standards, PM2.5,
total bacteria, mould and fungi, surface enteric bacteria, and benzene contamination require
improvement and may pose health risks to children. Regular ventilation, improved cleaning
and hygiene, proper maintenance of HEPA devices, and routine monitoring of particulate
matter, mould, and VOCs are needed.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2025;88(4):188-192
Background:
In recent years, the incidence of liver diseases due to complications of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
(NAFLD) has shown a significant upward trend in Southeast Asian countries. NAFLD is a hepatic disorder characterized
by lipid accumulation in the microstructure of the liver in individuals who consume little to no alcohol. It is often associated with insulin resistance and is diagnosed when steatosis affects more than 5% of hepatocytes histologically, or when
the fat signal intensity on MRI exceeds 5.6%, based on fat-to-water ratio measurements. In Mongolia, histological studies
using frozen liver sections with routine and special staining techniques are limited, highlighting the necessity of this study.
Aim:
To determine and compare the degree of steatosis and fibrosis in frozen liver tissue samples of patients with NAFLD
through histological analysis.
Materials and Methods:
This study was conducted at the the Department of Anatomy, School of Biomedicine and Bio
medical Research Institute of MNUMS in collaboration with the Second State Central Hospital. Ethical approval was
obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of MNUMS (Protocol No. 2024/3-06). All procedures adhered strictly to
laboratory biosafety protocols. Participants were selected among patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, from whom informed consent was obtained. Based on inclusion criteria, five participants were grouped as follows:
healthy control (n=1), NAFLD without fibrosis (n=2), and NAFLD with fibrosis (n=2). Liver biopsies (approx. 1 cm in
size) were obtained intraoperatively, immediately deep-frozen in liquid nitrogen, and prepared for histological evaluation.
Results:
In patients with NAFLD compared to the healthy liver group, disruption of hepatocyte columnar architecture and
mild periportal lymphocytic infiltration were observed. Oil Red O staining revealed 34–66% micro- and macrovesicular
steatosis, corresponding to grade 2 steatosis. Masson’s trichrome staining showed no fibrotic changes in perivenular or
periportal areas (Ishak grade 0/4) at this stage. However, upon progression to grade 3 steatosis, early-stage fibrosis was
observed in both perivenular and periportal regions (Ishak grade 1/4). Further progression to stage 4 fibrosis was characterized by the development of connective tissue septa, although no significant changes in droplet size were observed.
Conclusions
1. Increasing stages of fibrosis are not directly influenced by the severity of hepatic steatosis in NAFLD.
2. Although the degree of steatosis increases, the absence of corresponding fibrotic changes in early stages indicates a
complex progression pattern of NAFLD requiring further investigation.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2025;87(3):44-53
Background:
Cancer incidence and mortality are steadily increasing both
globally and in Mongolia. As these rates rise, traditional Mongolian medicine
has long utilized herbal formulas for the treatment of gastric and esophageal
cancers and precancerous conditions. One such formulation—Hot Natured
3 Herbs (HN3H)—comprises three species from the Ranunculaceae family:
Atragene sibirica L., Ranunculus repens L., and Pulsatilla bungeana L.. However,
scientific validation of its anti-tumor effects is essential. This study aimed
to investigate the effect of HN3H in a tumor-induced animal model.
Aim:
To identify the biologically active compounds of HN3H and evaluate their
effect in an experimentally induced tumor model in animals.
Materials and Methods:
The three herbs comprising HN3H—Atragene sibirica
L., Ranunculus repens L., and Pulsatilla bungeana L.—were collected
during their flowering stage (May–June) in Khishig-Undur, Bulgan province,
and dried according to official procedures. Extraction was carried out by maceration
in 96% ethanol at a 1:10 ratio. The concentrated extract was suspended
in water (1:1) and successively fractionated with dichloromethane, ethyl
acetate, butanol, chloroform, and n-hexane. The study was approved by the
Research Ethics Committee of the Mongolian National University of Medical
Sciences (Protocol №2020/03-04). A colorectal cancer model was established
by subcutaneous injection of MC-38 cells (Kerafast, USA) into C57BL/6 mice.
Immunohistochemistry was performed using CK20, CDX2, Ki67, and p53 antibodies
at 1:100 and 1:200 dilutions.
Results:
The ethanol extract of HN3H contained 2.98±0.04% total phenolics
and 2.16±0.05% total flavonoids. Body weight and tumor volume were
measured daily with three repetitions. All groups showed a time-dependent
increase in body weight. Mice in groups 1A and 1B received ethanol extract at
50 and 100 mg/kg doses; groups 2A and 2B received dichloromethane extract
at the same doses. The negative control group was administered 0.5 mg/kg
PBS orally, while the positive control group received intraperitoneal injections
of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) at 10 mg/kg twice a week. Tumor growth increased in a
time-dependent manner across groups. Compared to the negative control, tumor
volumes in four treatment groups showed statistically significant reduction
(p˂0.05), while no significant difference was observed when compared to the
positive control (p=0.08). Histological analysis revealed necrosis in all groups,
with variation in extent.
Conclusion
The ethanol extract of HN3H exhibited moderate levels of phenolic
compounds and a high concentration of flavonoids. HN3H extract inhibited
tumor progression and activated lymphocyte-predominant inflammation in
tumor tissues, indicating potential anti-tumor activity (p˂0.05).
9.Some findings on health issues linked to noise pollution in Ulaanbaatar city
Unurzaya E ; Mygmarjargal N ; Altangerel B ; Mygmardorj Ch ; Enhjargal A ; Oyun-Erdene O ; Suvd B
Mongolian Medical Sciences 2025;212(2):42-51
Introduction:
According to the WHO, being exposed to loud noise for a long time can be very harmful
to health. It can lead to heart and blood vessel problems, mental health issues, trouble
sleeping, and hearing loss. Noise pollution has a negative effect on the brain and nervous
system, and it can cause many problems. High-frequency noise, in particular, can disturb the
central nervous system. This can lead to problems like poor concentration, more anxiety, and
feeling mentally tired. Many studies around the world have shown that noise levels of ≥85 dB
at work increase the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus. In Ulaanbaatar,
environmental noise pollution continues to grow due to population growth, construction, and
urban planning. Therefore, it is important to find out whether environmental noise pollution is
linked to mental and behavioral disorders, insomnia, nervous fatigue, high blood pressure,
and hearing loss among the population.
Goal:
The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of primary hypertension (I10), nervous
fatigue (F48.0), sleep disorders (F51.0), and tinnitus (H83.3) caused by environmental noise
among the population of Ulaanbaatar.
Materials and Methods:
A descriptive research design was applied to examine statistical data from the Center for
Health Development regarding diseases related to noise pollution. Based on the 10th revision
of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), the study focused on conditions such
as neurasthenia (F48.0), non-organic sleep disorders (F51), primary hypertension (I10), and
hearing disorders (H83.3). The analysis included data recorded between 2014 and 2023
among the population of Ulaanbaatar city. Epidemiological analysis was performed using
SPSS-24 software, and the results were calculated per 10,000 population.
Ethical Considerations:
This study did not receive any external funding or financial support from public or private
organizations. It utilizes secondary data from the Health Development Center, which does
not contain any personal information.
Results:
In 2014, the average age of individuals diagnosed with neurasthenia (F48.0) was 40.1±12.6
years; for non-organic sleep disorders (F51.0), it was 48.1±14.5 years; for noise-induced
hearing disorders (H83.3), 47.2±12.7 years; and for primary hypertension (I10), the average
age was 59.0±11.4 years. By 2023, the average age for primary hypertension had slightly
decreased to 58.0±12.9 years. Since 2014, the number of cases of nervous fatigue, non
organic sleep disorders, and hearing problems caused by noise has risen in Ulaanbaatar.
In 2023, the average age of people with primary hypertension (I10) dropped to 58.0±12.9
years. Noise-related illnesses are common among people aged 40 to 60 in Ulaanbaatar, and
this is lowering their quality of life.
Conclusion
Noise-related illnesses are being recorded among the 40–60 age group in Ulaanbaatar,
which is negatively affecting their quality of life. It is urgently necessary to introduce
measures for adequate protection of the population from the negative health effects of
environmental noise.

Mongolian Medical Sciences 2024;207(1):30-36
Introduction:
In 2020, the prevalence of respiratory system diseases in the population of Gobi-Altai province is
1339.5 cases per 10,000 population, which is 4% (52) more than the average of the provinces and
20% (223.8) more than the national average. In 2021, the number of deaths due to respiratory system
diseases was 2.9 per 10,000 population, increasing by 1.1 from 2020 (1.8). Pneumonia-related deaths
account for 60.7% of all respiratory system-related deaths. As of 2022, there are 7,281 simple stoves,
248 low-pressure and steam boilers, and 18,207 automobiles in the Gobi-Altai province as sources of
air pollution. 63.1% of the total coal is consumed by water heating boilers with a capacity of more than
101 kW, 20.5% by households, and 16.4% by small and medium enterprises.
Goal:
Determining the relationship between the incidence of pneumonia in the population of Gobi-Altai
province and the common air pollutants.
Material and Method:
According to the rotation research model, the common external air pollutants SO₂, NO₂, PM₁₀,
climate parameters, temperature, pressure, humidity, and population pneumonia measurements
and registration data of Altai Sum, Gobi-Altai Province in 2020-2021 were analyzed using SPSS-24
software. statistical processing was calculated for non-parametric parameters.
Result:
The annual average value of sulfur dioxide (SO₂ ) measured in 20 minutes in Gobi-Altai province is
25.2 ± 13.7 μg/m³, the annual average value of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) measured in 20 minutes is
36.329±29 μg/m³, and the annual average concentration of PM₁₀ particles is 35.2 ± 28,264 μg/m³,
which is the standard level of MNS4585:2016. But the 20-minute average concentration of SO₂
(r=0.81, p=0.005), the average concentration of NO₂ (r=0.089, p=0.008), and the average concentration of PM₁₀ (r=0.089, p=0.002) is directly related to the incidence of pneumonia. It is also inversely correlated with air temperature (r=-142, p=0,000).
Conclusion
Common outdoor air pollutants in Yesunbulag sum, Gobi-Altai Province are related to
pneumonia in children aged 0-5 years.
