Objective:
To explore the application method and clinical efficacy of endoscopic and computerized navigation technology in maxillofacial foreign body removal surgery, and to provide a reference for the clinical application of this technology.
Methods:
This study, which was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the hospital, retrospectively analyzed the data of five patients with maxillofacial foreign bodies who were admitted to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University from January 2018 to December 2024. All patients underwent preoperative CT scanning. Intraoperatively, endoscopic and computer navigation techniques were used in combination or separately according to the location, size, and adjacency of the foreign body to important neurovascular vessels. The foreign body was precisely localized by endoscopic magnification and direct visualization, and the optimal surgical path was designed and verified under the real-time guidance of computerized navigation to accurately remove the foreign body. The type of foreign body, location, length and diameter, duration of surgery, length of incision, success rate of foreign body removal, postoperative complications, and follow-up were recorded and analyzed.
Results:
The foreign body was successfully removed in all five patients with a success rate of 100%. The intraoperative computerized navigation system was accurate in positioning, and the alignment stability was not significantly affected by mandibular movement; the endoscope provided good illumination and exposure of the operative field. All surgical incisions were small, and no serious complications, such as foreign body residue, important neurovascular injury, or infection, occurred after surgery. One month after the operation, the patients were followed up and recovered well.
Conclusion
The combination of endoscopy and computer navigation or separately assisted technology can provide a clear field and real-time positioning for maxillofacial foreign body removal, effectively avoiding important anatomical structures, thus realizing safe and complete foreign body removal with minimized trauma. This assistive technology significantly improves the accuracy and safety of the operation and has clinical promotion value.

Collagen membrane has attracted much attention from researchers due to its excellent properties such as wide source, degradable absorption, and low immunogenicity. However, they are limited by poor mechanical stability and rapid degradation. To enhance their physicochemical properties and biological functions, researchers have developed various strategies, including cross-linking, incorporation of growth factors or drugs, combination with other biomaterials, optimization of composition and structure, and substitution with marine-derived collagen. These advances aim to expand the clinical applications of collagen membranes in oral medicine. With the urgent demand for high-performance biomaterials in oral medicine, summarizing recent progress on collagen membranes provides valuable insights into their mechanisms, clinical efficacy, and limitations, offering reference for optimized design and broader clinical use. Furthermore, further trends may include integrating advanced manufacturing technologies to develop personalized collagen membranes, which could significantly improve therapeutic outcomes in oral diseases.

Journal of Army Medical University 2025;47(6):602-612
Objective To provide an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced infections by preparing platelet membrane-modified catalase/silica nanoparticles(PCNP)capable of targeting leukocytes. Methods PCNP and catalase/silica nanoparticles(CNP)were prepared by using platelet membrane, catalase(CAT)and silica, and its biological safety was preliminarily evaluated with cell survival test, hemolysis test and acute toxicity test in mice after tail vein administration; The culture medium,FITC labeled(FITC+)PCNP and FITC labeled(FITC+)CNP were co-incubated with human peripheral blood B lymphocytes(AHH-1)and mouse monocyte macrophages(RAW264.7),respectively.Thus,there were control group,FITC+PCNP group and FITC+CNP group of AHH-1 and RAW264.7 cells.Laser confocal microscopy was used to observe the intracellular fluorescence intensity of PCNP to evaluate the leukocytes targeting function.AHH-1 cells were divided into control, irradiation, platelet membrane,CNP(100 μg/mL)and PCNP(100 μg/mL)groups.After corresponding co-incubation,the cell media were exposed to6 Gy Co60 γ irradiation. The generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and cell apoptosis were measured to determine the effect of nanoparticles on reducing radiation injury of leukocytes.Twenty C57BL/6 male mice(weighing 18~20 g)were randomly divided into irradiation group(n=10)and 10 mg/kg PCNP group(n=10).In 2 h after corresponding agents were injected into the mice through tail vein, the mice received whole-body irradiation of 5 Gy Co60 γ ray,and then in 2 h later, they were given intraperitoneal injection of multidrug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii(MDR-AB).The infection inhibitory effect of PCNP after irradiation was evaluated by detecting the bacterial load in main organs. Results The hydration particle of PCNP is 91.3 nm in size, and does not exhibit significant cytotoxicity or hemolytic toxicity at concentrations<400 μg/mL.Intravenous injection of 20 mg/kg PCNP resulted in normal increase in the body weight but no obvious pathological changes in the major organs such as the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. In AHH-1 and RAW264.7 cells,PCNP showed significant advantages in targeting compared to the FITC+CNP group[(15.45±3.48)%vs(9.33±2.03)%,P<0.01;(11.25±2.08)%vs(7.06±0.71)%,P<0.001].PCNP also effectively reduced the generation of ROS[(22.73±3.71)%vs(60.90±9.08)%,P<0.001]and apoptotic rate[(9.84±0.92)%vs(38.96±3.62)%,P<0.001]in AHH-1 cells. In in vitro study, bacterial colonization after irradiation showed that there was significantly less MDR-AB colonies in the spleen of mice intervened with PCNP than those of the irradiation group[(17.50±1.38)×104 vs(13.20±2.29)×106 CFU/g,P<0.001].Conclusion PCNP can effectively inhibit the complications of radiation infection in mice, which is due to its direct protective effect on leukocytes.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2024;59(12):1185-1192
Chinese Journalof Stomatology has issued eighty papers on Chinese stomatology history in seventy years. According to three stages of the journal, statistics of the quantity and themes of the issued papers are compiled: the number of issued papers increased while the theme shifted from Chinese stomatology history before 1912 to Chinese contemporary stomatology history. Research methods shifted from the comparatively scanty summary or induction on literature and cultural relics materials to multidisciplinary approaches. Early researches testified the achievments of senior scholars such as Zhou Dacheng and Mao Xiejun in the field while research teams represented by colleges and research institutions have published varied research topics in recent years. As the research deepens, platforms for issuing stomatology papers have been expanded and more subjects have been cross-disciplined. Varieties of academic monographs on stomatology history and stomatology education history have been published, among which Zhou Dacheng's Historic textual research of Chinese stomatology can be regarded as a milestone in the field. Comparing with other fields of stomatology, current research on stomatology history still has much more gaps to fill. The academic community should put more emphasis on talent training, discipline construction, research approaches, museum construction, as well as the cooperation between Chinese and western medical sciences so that to assist in the long-term development of the research.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2024;49(12):2005-2015
Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) is an adjunctive technique in orthodontic treatment, based on the principle of the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP). It aims to shorten orthodontic treatment duration by enhancing osteoclast activity. In recent years, the surgical approach of PAOO has been gradually optimized with the development of techniques such as piezosurgical corticotomy and alveolar micro-osteoperforations. The materials used have also improved, including novel grafting materials such as bioactive glass and new barrier membranes like platelet-rich fibrin. Thanks to these clinical innovations, PAOO is evolving toward a trend of minimal pain, low invasiveness, and high efficacy. However, clinical research on PAOO remains limited, large-sample, multicenter randomized controlled trials are still needed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of different surgical techniques and grafting materials in PAOO.

STOMATOLOGY 2023;43(1):1-10
Understanding the pattern and molecular mechanisms of tooth, maxilla and mandible development is the prerequisite for studying their regeneration. Tooth development can be divided into three stages: bud-bell stage, tooth crown development stage and tooth root development stage. During these processes, key genes show spatial and temporal expression pattern. Tooth development is a complex process involving interactions between dental epithelium and mesenchyme, precise regulations of enamel knots in cusp patterning, as well as successful eruption into the oral cavity under proper biomechanical stress and signaling transductions. The development of tooth, maxilla and mandible, all of which originate from the first branchial arch, is independent and regulates each other to form a whole during development. Any developmental defects of them will ultimately cause defects to the others. In this paper, we briefly reviewed the development of tooth, maxilla and mandible, proposed that the homeostasis of microenvironment is critical for their development. Moreover, we reviewed the role of Meckel’s cartilage, a special structure and signaling mechanism during mandible development. At last, we proposed an integrated development model of tooth, maxilla and mandible. We also hope that the regeneration of fully functional tooth, maxilla and mandible in human can be achieved based on fundamental knowledge we have gained so far.

West China Journal of Stomatology 2023;41(5):604-612
Chinese medicine entered a significant period from foundation to maturity between Han and Tang dynasties when the Chinese traditional stomatology was a key stage. Sorting and analysis of existing literature and research outcomes have showed that current research on stomatology between Han and Tang dynasties focuses on oral physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment, and health care. It also involves stomatology history and explanation of termino-logies related to mouth and teeth recorded in medical books, use of simple methods, and thinking with citation and analysis of literature simply listed and reasoning preliminarily deducted. From the macro perspective, current research has not unveiled the whole picture of stomatology between the two dynasties and left a series of key issues unresolved. Thus, new methods should be developed and employed to carry out medical research on stomatology between Han and Tang dynasties given that is has a prosperous future.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2022;47(4):521-528
Peri-implantitis, characterized by inflammation of tissues around implants and gradual loss of supporting bone tissue, has become one of the main causes for implant failure. Thoroughly removing the plaque biofilm on the implant surface is the first principle in the treatment of peri-implantitis. For this reason, various decontamination methods have been proposed, which can be divided into 2 categories: Removing biofilm and killing microorganisms according to the effect of plaque biofilm on the implant surface. However, at present, there is no decontamination method that can completely remove the plaque biofilm on the implant surface, and it lacks of clinical recommended guidelines. To understand the advantages and disadvantages, effectiveness and safety for different implant surface decontamination methods is of great significance to guide the clinical selection for peri-implantitis treatment.
