This narrative review examines the challenges, strategies, and future directions in the development of young teachers within the pathophysiology departments of Chinese medical colleges. A thorough review of 49 studies published between 2013 and 2024 was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, and various Chinese databases. The primary challenges identified include teaching innovation (cited in 84.2% of the studies), research pressure (91.2%), disciplinary characteristics (87.7%), and career development (80.7%). Medical schools have responded by enhancing training systems (94.7%), innovating teaching methods (93.0%), and bolstering research support (96.5%). Looking ahead, trends are shifting toward the application of new technologies, interdisciplinary integration, and international collaboration. The focus on cultivating young teachers is increasingly geared towards personalization and diversification, which are essential for advancing education in pathophysiology. High-quality young teachers are pivotal in raising teaching standards, fostering research innovation, and facilitating interdisciplinary exchanges. Based on these insights, we recommend several practical measures to enhance the quality of pathophysiology education in China. These include establishing comprehensive training programs that integrate teaching innovation and research skills; developing structured mentorship systems with clear pathways for career advancement; creating platforms that support technology-enhanced teaching and international collaboration; and implementing systematic evaluation mechanisms to assess teaching effectiveness. These targeted interventions will require a coordinated effort from department heads, educational institutions, and policymakers to ensure a sustained improvement in the quality of pathophysiology education.

Sensorineural hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders. In recent years, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders caused by mutations in the OTOF gene have garnered significant attention worldwide, marking it as the first deafness gene with breakthroughs in gene therapy. Most patients with OTOF gene mutations present with stable, congenital, or prelingual onset of hearing loss, which can range from severe to profound and even complete hearing loss. However, a minority of patients may exhibit mild to moderate progressive hearing loss or temperature-sensitive hearing loss. This review further explores the genotype-phenotype relationship of the OTOF gene based on reported cases in China and abroad. Additionally, we analyze the characteristics of the natural history of OTOF gene mutations within the Chinese population. This study aims to provide a reference for the clinical diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of hearing loss associated with OTOF gene mutations.

5.Study on meal preferences of school aged children based on discrete choice experiment

Objective:
To explore the relative importance of different food attributes and levels in food decision making of school aged children, and to understand their meal preferences, so as to provide the evidence for formulating precise intervention strategies for dietary behaviours of school aged children.
Methods:
From May to June 2024, a total of 854 children aged 11 to 15 years old were selected from 2 middle schools (each school in urban and rural areas) in both Hubei Province and Anhui Province by stratified cluster random sampling method to conduct a D-optimal discrete choice experiment. The mixed Logit model was used to analyze children s preference for meal attributes and different levels, and to calculate the relative importance (RI) of attributes and willingness to pay (WTP) in meal choices.
Results:
The included five food attributes had statistical significance on meal choice of school aged children ( P <0.05). The relative importance of food attributes affecting the meal choices of school aged children in descending order were dining mode ( RI =31.26%), food varieties ( RI =30.56%), cooking method( RI =23.84%), taste( RI =8.06%) and price ( RI =6.27%). Among them, school aged children preferred home cooked meals ( β =0.74) (WTP=86.3 yuan),varied foods(grain/tubers+vegetables+fish, meat, eggs and beans) ( β =0.61) (WTP=71.9 yuan), fried/roasted cooking ( β =0.51) and spicy taste ( β =0.33).Price was negatively correlated with meal choices( β =-0.01) ( P <0.05). Based on residential area and body mass index (BMI), the stratified analysis showed that dining mode was highest in the relative importance for rural children with overweight and obese children ( RI =31.28%,34.17%), both of whom preferred home cooked meals ( β =0.76, 0.91), and meals containing fish, meat, eggs and beans with grain/tubers or grain/tubers and vegetables in terms of food choice (area: β =0.53, 0.53 ; BMI: β =0.55, 0.56) ( P <0.05).
Conclusions
School aged children have different preferences for different attributes of meals. The quality of school meals should be improved,the cost of buying healthy meals should be reduced,targeted family health education should be carried out,and healthy cooking methods should be advocated.

8.Application of palatopharyngeal arch staging system in assessing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea and airway collapse.

Objective:To investigate the relationship between the Palatopharyngeal Arch Staging System(PASS) and the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA), as well as the patterns of airway collapse, while further assessing its clinical applicability. Methods:A total of 98 patients diagnosed with OSA at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Shenzhen University Affiliated Shenzhen Hospital, were recruited for this study. Data collected included basic demographic information, oropharyngeal laryngoscopy videos, results from awake laryngoscopy Muller tests, and indicators from sleep respiratory monitoring. The distribution of each PASS stage among patients with varying severities of OSA was compared. Additionally, both objective and subjective sleep indicators along with occurrences of airway collapse in OSA patients across different PASS stages were analyzed. Results:In total, 98 patients participated in this study. Statistically significant differences were observed in neck circumference, weight, Body Mass Index(BMI), tongue position, and PASS stage when comparing mild-to-moderate OSA patients to those with severe OSA(P<0.05). Furthermore, there were statistically significant variations in Apnea-Hypopnea Index(AHI), minimum blood oxygen saturation levels, average blood oxygen saturation levels, oxygen desaturation index values, and total oxygen desaturation indices among OSA patients categorized by different PASS stages. Multiple comparisons revealed statistically significant differences in AHI as well as minimum and average blood oxygen saturation levels between patients at PASS 1 versus those at PASS 3(P<0.05). Additionally, notable differences regarding oropharyngeal collapse rates among OSA patients across various PASS stages were identified; specifically between those at PASS stage 1 and those at PASS stage 3. Conclusion:The proportion of PASS stages for OSA varies across different severity levels. The severity of OSA and the degree of airway collapse in patients with varying PASS stages also exhibit significant differences. Patients classified as PASS 3 demonstrate a more severe form of OSA compared to those at PASS 1, with stage 3 being more susceptible to oropharyngeal collapse than its stage 1 counterpart. This assessment system is anticipated to address the current limitations in evaluating the lateral pharyngeal wall within the oropharynx.

9.Prediction of Pharmacoresistance in Drug-Naïve Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Using Ictal EEGs Based on Convolutional Neural Network.

Approximately 30%-40% of epilepsy patients do not respond well to adequate anti-seizure medications (ASMs), a condition known as pharmacoresistant epilepsy. The management of pharmacoresistant epilepsy remains an intractable issue in the clinic. Its early prediction is important for prevention and diagnosis. However, it still lacks effective predictors and approaches. Here, a classical model of pharmacoresistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) was established to screen pharmacoresistant and pharmaco-responsive individuals by applying phenytoin to amygdaloid-kindled rats. Ictal electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded before phenytoin treatment were analyzed. Based on ictal EEGs from pharmacoresistant and pharmaco-responsive rats, a convolutional neural network predictive model was constructed to predict pharmacoresistance, and achieved 78% prediction accuracy. We further found the ictal EEGs from pharmacoresistant rats have a lower gamma-band power, which was verified in seizure EEGs from pharmacoresistant TLE patients. Prospectively, therapies targeting the subiculum in those predicted as "pharmacoresistant" individual rats significantly reduced the subsequent occurrence of pharmacoresistance. These results demonstrate a new methodology to predict whether TLE individuals become resistant to ASMs in a classic pharmacoresistant TLE model. This may be of translational importance for the precise management of pharmacoresistant TLE.

10.Osthole ameliorates chronic pruritus in 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis by inhibiting IL-31 production.

OBJECTIVE:
This study aims to elucidate the therapeutic potential of osthole for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), focusing on its ability to alleviate chronic pruritus (CP) and the underlying molecular mechanisms.
METHODS:
In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of osthole in both a 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD mouse model and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) stimulated huma immortalized epidermal (HaCaT) cells. The anti-itch effect of osthole was specifically assessed in the AD mouse model. Using methods such as hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blot (WB), quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and immunofluorescence staining.
RESULTS:
Osthole improved skin damage and clinical dermatitis scores, reduced scratching bouts, and decreased epidermal thickness AD-like mice. It also reduced the levels of interleukin (IL)-31 and IL-31 receptor A (IL-31 RA) in both skin tissues and HaCaT cells. Furthermore, Osthole suppressed the protein expression levels of phosphor-p65 (p-p65) and phosphor-inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-Bα (p-IκBα). Meanwhile, it increased the protein expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and PPARγ in HaCaT cells.
CONCLUSION
These findings indicated that osthole effectively inhibited CP in AD by activating PPARα, PPARγ, repressing the NF-κB signaling pathway, as well as the expression of IL-31 and IL-31 RA.
