Asian Nursing Research 2024;18(2):106-113
Purpose:
To identify the predictors of infectious disease-specific health literacy (IDSHL), and establish an easy-to-apply nomogram to predict the IDSHL of older adults.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study included 380 older adults who completed the IDSHL, self-rated health, socio-demographic and other questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to identify the IDSHL predictors. Nomogram was used to construct a predictive model.
Results:
Up to 70.1% of older adults had limited IDSHL. Age, education, place of residence, self-rated health, and Internet access were the important influencing factors of IDSHL. The established nomogram model showed high accuracy (receiver operating characteristic curve: 0.848).
Conclusions
The IDSHL of Chinese older adults was significantly deficient. The constructed nomogram is an intuitive tool for IDSHL prediction that can not only contribute toward rapid screening of high-risk older adults with limited IDSHL but also provide guidance for healthcare providers to develop prevention strategies for infectious diseases.

Chinese Medical Journal 2023;136(23):2867-2873
BACKGROUND:
Human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL) has been used extensively to differentiate acute bacterial infection from febrile diseases as a biomarker to reflect the activation of the neutrophil. The serum HNL levels in the adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) patients with and without infection, as well as the healthy controls (HCs), were analyzed statistically in this study to evaluate the value of HNL for the diagnosis of AOSD.
METHODS:
A total of 129 AOSD patients were enrolled, from whom blood samples were drawn and the AOSD diagnosis was confirmed through the review of the medical records, where the systemic score, demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, and laboratory parameters were also collected for the patients; in addition, a total of 40 HCs were recruited among the blood donors from the healthcare center with the relevant information collected. The HNL test was done for the blood samples with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the analyses were done for the correlations of HNL with clinical manifestations and diagnostic effectiveness.
RESULTS:
The serum HNL increased significantly in the patients with only AOSD as compared with that in the HCs (139.76 ± 8.99 ng/mL vs . 55.92 ± 6.12 ng/mL; P < 0.001). The serum HNL level was correlated with the white blood cell (WBC) count ( r = 0.335, P < 0.001), neutrophil count ( r = 0.334, P < 0.001), erythrocyte sedimentation rate ( r = 0.241, P = 0.022), C-reactive protein ( r = 0.442, P < 0.0001), and systemic score ( r = 0.343, P < 0.0001) in the AOSD patients significantly. Patients with fever, leukocytosis ≥15,000/mm 3 , and myalgia in the HNL-positive group were observed relatively more than those in the HNL-negative group ( P = 0.009, P = 0.023, and P = 0.007, respectively). HNL was a more sensitive indicator than ferritin and C-reactive protein (CRP) to differentiate the AOSD patients with bacterial infection from AOSD-only patients, and the Youden index was 0.6 for HNL and 0.29 for CRP.
CONCLUSION
Serum HNL can be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of the AOSD, and HNL is also observed to be associated with the disease activity.

Objective:To observe the long-term efficacy and late adverse reactions of simultaneous integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) for mediastinal lymph node recurrence after radical surgery for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).Methods:A total of 20 ESCC patients with mediastinal lymph node recurrence (≤5) after radical surgery admitted to Department of Radiotherapy, Shanghai Ruijin Hospital between June 2019 and December 2021 were enrolled in this prospective study. Among them, 10 patients were enrolled in phase I study and 10 patients in phase II study. Four, 3 and 13 patients received three different doses of SIB-IMRT at 58.8 Gy/28 fractions, 64.4 Gy/28 fractions and 70.0 Gy/28 fractions for recurrent lesions, respectively. The overall survival (OS) rate, local control rate (LCR) and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Adverse reactions were also analyzed. Results:The most common sites of recurrence were 2R and 4 L, accounting for 35% and 25%, respectively. The median follow-up time was 32 months. For patients who received salvage chemoradiation after relapse, the 1-, 2- and 3-year OS rates were 100%, 88% and 78%, the 1-, 2- and 3-year PFS rates were 85%, 78% and 78%, respectively. The most common hematological toxicities were leukocytopenia and anemia. The most common nonhematological toxicity was esophagitis. However, no grade 3 or above esophagitis, pneumonia and cardiotoxicity were found. Three patients who received SIB-IMRT at 58.8 Gy/28 fractions died of distant metastases at 2 years after treatment, and 1 patient who received SIB-IMRT at 70.0 Gy/28 fractions died of distant metastases at 16 months after treatment. Conclusion:Salvage chemoradiotherapy using SIB-IMRT is efficacious and safe for mediastinal lymph node recurrence in ESCC patients after radical resection.

Chinese Journal of Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine 2014;(9):53-57
Objective To study anaphylactoid reactions induced by traditional Chinese medicine injections (TCMI) of Qingkailing (QKL) and Xuesaitong (XST) with RBL-2H3 cells; To provide some reference for improving the screening system of TCMI induced anaphylactoid reactions. Methods The IC50 induced by QKL and XST injections was determined by MTT assay. RBL-2H3 cells were stimulated with TCMI at different concentrations or with C48/80 or culture medium. Thirty minutes later, the supernatant was collected to determine the release of histamine andβ-hexosaminidase. The cell degranulation rate and the ultrastructure changes were observed. The ICR mice were given single injection of TCMI containing Evans Blue through tail vein. The number of the animal with blue ear, the total number of blue ears and the quantity of Evans Blue of extravasation were determined 30 minutes later. Results The IC50 of both QKL injection and XST injection was 12.5μL/mL. These two injections promoted RBL-2H3 cells to release histamine andβ-hexosaminidase at higher concentrations (P<0.05,P<0.01) in a dose dependent manner. Cell morphology showed a decrease of villous on the cell surface and an increase of the internal vacuolated structure. Both injections caused the blue ears of all animal with a rate of 100%. The quantity of Evans Blue of the extravasation was significantly increased (P<0.01). The results in vitro study were in close agreement with that in vivo. Conclusion Both QKL injection and XST injection may potentially cause anaphylactoid reactions. The RBL-2H3 cell model may be valuable to evaluate the anaphylactoid reactions induced by TCMI.
