Objective This study reports on the obligatory parasitism of water mites Arrenurus sp. on Anopheles messeae at the Manzhouli Port, Inner Mongolia, China. Methods Duing July 2024, a survey on the mosquito diversity was conducted at the Manzhouli Port. Captured mosquitoes and their ectoparasites were identified to species level. Results A total of 1840 adult mosquitoes were collected, representing species from three genera: Culex(Cx. modestus, Cx. pipiens pallens), Aedes(Ae. dorsalis, Ae. flavidorsalis, Ae. flavescens), and Anopheles (An. messeae). Among all the mosqutioes specimens,3 out of 150 captured An. messeae were found to carry ectoparasitic mites, with number of 2,4,27 mites separately. Morphological and molecular identification reached the same result as water mites(Hydrachnidiae, Hydracrina). COI gene sequence showed 94% similarity with the closest species Arrenurus truncatellus. Conlusions Literature review suggests water mites are host-specific parasitism of mosquito species and herein with the first record of Arrenurus sp. parasiting on An. Messeae in the most high-latitude region globally.

Progress in Biochemistry and Biophysics 2025;52(8):2087-2102
As China accelerates its efforts in deep space exploration and long-duration space missions, including the operationalization of the Tiangong Space Station and the development of manned lunar missions, safeguarding astronauts’ physiological and cognitive functions under extreme space conditions becomes a pressing scientific imperative. Among the multifactorial stressors of spaceflight, microgravity emerges as a particularly potent disruptor of neurobehavioral homeostasis. Dopamine (DA) plays a central role in regulating behavior under space microgravity by influencing reward processing, motivation, executive function and sensorimotor integration. Changes in gravity disrupt dopaminergic signaling at multiple levels, leading to impairments in motor coordination, cognitive flexibility, and emotional stability. Microgravity exposure induces a cascade of neurobiological changes that challenge dopaminergic stability at multiple levels: from the transcriptional regulation of DA synthesis enzymes and the excitability of DA neurons, to receptor distribution dynamics and the efficiency of downstream signaling pathways. These changes involve downregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase in the substantia nigra, reduced phosphorylation of DA receptors, and alterations in vesicular monoamine transporter expression, all of which compromise synaptic DA availability. Experimental findings from space analog studies and simulated microgravity models suggest that gravitational unloading alters striatal and mesocorticolimbic DA circuitry, resulting in diminished motor coordination, impaired vestibular compensation, and decreased cognitive flexibility. These alterations not only compromise astronauts’ operational performance but also elevate the risk of mood disturbances and motivational deficits during prolonged missions. The review systematically synthesizes current findings across multiple domains: molecular neurobiology, behavioral neuroscience, and gravitational physiology. It highlights that maintaining DA homeostasis is pivotal in preserving neuroplasticity, particularly within brain regions critical to adaptation, such as the basal ganglia, prefrontal cortex, and cerebellum. The paper also discusses the dual-edged nature of DA plasticity: while adaptive remodeling of synapses and receptor sensitivity can serve as compensatory mechanisms under stress, chronic dopaminergic imbalance may lead to maladaptive outcomes, such as cognitive rigidity and motor dysregulation. Furthermore, we propose a conceptual framework that integrates homeostatic neuroregulation with the demands of space environmental adaptation. By drawing from interdisciplinary research, the review underscores the potential of multiple intervention strategies including pharmacological treatment, nutritional support, neural stimulation techniques, and most importantly, structured physical exercise. Recent rodent studies demonstrate that treadmill exercise upregulates DA transporter expression in the dorsal striatum, enhances tyrosine hydroxylase activity, and increases DA release during cognitive tasks, indicating both protective and restorative effects on dopaminergic networks. Thus, exercise is highlighted as a key approach because of its sustained effects on DA production, receptor function, and brain plasticity, making it a strong candidate for developing effective measures to support astronauts in maintaining cognitive and emotional stability during space missions. In conclusion, the paper not only underscores the centrality of DA homeostasis in space neuroscience but also reflects the authors’ broader academic viewpoint: understanding the neurochemical substrates of behavior under microgravity is fundamental to both space health and terrestrial neuroscience. By bridging basic neurobiology with applied space medicine, this work contributes to the emerging field of gravitational neurobiology and provides a foundation for future research into individualized performance optimization in extreme environments.

Singapore medical journal 2025;66(12):640-644
INTRODUCTION:
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed care provision models, with a rapid increase in the adoption of telemedicine to reduce in-person visits. Although there are many benefits to teledermatology, there are also factors that hinder its widespread adoption. We aimed to examine patients' perceptions of teledermatology to identify the barriers to its adoption.
METHODS:
A prospective study was conducted from 15 June to 14 August 2020. Patients were invited to complete a questionnaire in an outpatient dermatology clinic via direct approach by clinical staff or posters posted at the door of consultation rooms.
RESULTS:
Out of 2,276 clinic attendances, 997 survey responses (43.8%) were collected over a 3-month period. When asked if they would change their subsequent visit to teledermatology, 294 (29.5%) patients were keen, 166 (16.6%) were unsure and 537 (53.9%) declined. Significant factors for declining teledermatology were lack of prior exposure to videoconferencing ( P < 0.01) and lower educational level ( P = 0.019). Patients also raised concerns regarding the ability of teledermatology to address medical concerns (32.1%) and indicated a preference for face-to-face consultation (29.7%).
CONCLUSION
Factors that influence patients' decision to adopt teledermatology, such as concerns about its ability to address medical issues, lack of IT literacy or experience in teleconferencing, are modifiable. Targeted strategies such as careful patient selection, a dedicated teleconsultation workflow, and the use of a novel 'teledermatology patient journey' (including a clinic walkthrough at the first visit) and an intuitive audio-enabled user interface, may improve patient perceptions and adoption of teleconsultation service.

OBJECTIVE:
To explore the effect and mechanism of acupuncture at "Weizhong" (BL40) on microcirculation of paravertebral skeletal muscle in rats with chronic blunt injury of lumbar muscle based on the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway.
METHODS:
Forty-eight SPF-grade SD rats were randomized into a blank group (8 rats) and a modeling group (40 rats). Chronic blunt injury model was established by weight impact method in the modeling group. Forty rats were successfully modeled, and were randomly divided into a model group, an acupuncture at Weizhong group (Weizhong group), an acupuncture at non-acupoint group (non-acupoint group), an inhibitor group, and an inhibitor+acupuncture at Weizhong group (inhibitor+Weizhong group), 8 rats in each group. In the Weizhong group and the inhibitor+Weizhong group, acupuncture was applied at bilateral "Weizhong" (BL40). In the non-acupoint group, acupuncture was applied at non-acupoints, i.e. points 0.5 cm inward from bilateral "Weizhong" (BL40). The acupuncture intervention was delivered 20 min each time, once a day for continuous 2 weeks. In the inhibitor group and the inhibitor+Weizhong group, intraperitoneal injection of IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) inhibitor was given once a day, at a dosage of 2 mg/100 g, for continuous 2 weeks. A combination of the "disease-syndrome-symptom" approach was used to study the syndrome characterization and features of dampness-heat obstruction syndrome in papain-induced knee osteoarthritis(KOA) model rats during the disease process. Forty-eight male SD rats were randomly divided into sham and model groups. The KOA model was established by injecting a mixture of papain and L-cysteine into the joint cavity on days 1, 3, and 5. During the 8 weeks following model establishment, the rats were assessed weekly for the plantar mechanical pain threshold, knee joint diameter, local skin temperature of the knee joint, weight-bearing difference between the two hind feet, and the modified Lequesne MG score of the knee joint. Samples were collected at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after model establishment to observe the gross lesions in cartilage and synovium. Histopathological changes in joint tissues were examined using hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, and Senna red O-solid green staining. ELISA and immunohistochemical analysis were performed to detect the levels of interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, prostaglandin E2(PGE2), and the expression of aquaporins(AQP) 1 and 3 in serum and synovium. The results showed that the ink score of articular cartilage in the model group significantly increased from 4 to 8 weeks, the cartilage Mankin's score and the percentage of Masson-positive area in cartilage increased significantly from 1 to 8 weeks. The percentage of red-stained area for cartilage proteoglycans decreased significantly from 1 to 8 weeks. The synovitis score from 1 to 6 weeks and the percentage of blue-stained collagen fibers in the synovium from 1 to 8 weeks increased significantly, with statistically significant differences compared to the sham group. The mechanical pain threshold in the model group significantly decreased from 1 to 8 weeks, the knee joint diameter significantly increased from 1 to 6 weeks, and the local skin temperature of the knee joint, the weight-bearing difference between the two hind feet, and the modified Lequesne MG score from 1 to 5 weeks significantly increased, all with statistically significant differences compared to the sham group. The levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and PGE2 in serum and synovium of the model group significantly increased from 1 to 6 weeks. Serum TNF-α and PGE2, and synovial IL-1β, also significantly increased at 8 weeks. The levels of cartilage AQP1 and AQP3 significantly increased from 1 to 4 weeks, while synovial AQP1 and AQP3 increased significantly from 1 to 6 weeks, with all differences statistically significant compared to the sham group. In conclusion, papain-induced KOA rats exhibited pathological changes, including articular cartilage degeneration and synovial inflammation, within 1 week of induction. The KOA rats showed characteristics of dampness-heat obstruction syndrome, such as joint pain, swelling, elevated skin temperature, and decreased function, as well as increased inflammatory factors and AQP1、AQP3 in serum and joint tissues within 5 to 6 weeks of disease onset. These results provide an experimental model for studying the syndromes of KOA with dampness-heat obstruction syndrome.

Understory planting of medicinal plants is a new planting mode that connects Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) with forest resources. The complex and variable understory environmental factors will inevitably affect the yield and quality of understory CHM.This research summarized the research progress on understory planting of medicinal plants based on forest types and environmental factors within the forest from the perspectives of understory light, air temperature and humidity, soil characteristics, and the interaction between crops within the forest. The results showed that the complex and variable light, temperature and humidity, and soil factors(such as fertility, acidity and alkalinity, and microorganisms) under the forest could affect the yield and quality of medicinal plants to varying degrees through physiological activities such as photosynthesis and respiration, resulting in a significant increase or decrease in yield and quality compared to open field cultivation. In addition, the competition or mutual benefit between different crops within the forest could lead to differences in the yield and quality of understory medicinal plants compared to open field cultivation.A reasonable combination of planting could achieve resource sharing and complementary advantages. Therefore, conducting systematic research on the effects of understory environmental factors on the yield and content of medicinal plants with different growth and development characteristics can provide theoretical guidance and technical references for formulating comprehensive strategies for understory planting of medicinal plants, such as selecting suitable medicinal plant varieties, optimizing planting density, and conducting reasonable forest management, thus contributing to the sustainable development and ecological protection of CHM.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2025;38(5):585-597
OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to identify high-risk areas for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mortality to provide relevant evidence for interventions in emerging economies.
METHODS:
Empirical Bayesian Kriging and a discrete Poisson space-time scan statistic were applied to identify the spatiotemporal clusters of T2DM mortality. The relationships between economic factors, air pollutants, and the mortality risk of T2DM were assessed using regression analysis and the Poisson Log-linear Model.
RESULTS:
A coastal district in East Guangdong, China, had the highest risk (Relative Risk [RR] = 4.58, P < 0.01), followed by the 10 coastal districts/counties in West Guangdong, China (RR = 2.88, P < 0.01). The coastal county in the Pearl River Delta, China (RR = 2.24, P < 0.01), had the third-highest risk. The remaining risk areas were two coastal counties in East Guangdong, 16 districts/counties in the Pearl River Delta, and two counties in North Guangdong, China. Mortality due to T2DM was associated with gross domestic product per capita (GDP per capita). In pilot assessments, T2DM mortality was significantly associated with carbon monoxide.
CONCLUSION
High mortality from T2DM occurred in the coastal areas of East and West Guangdong, especially where the economy was progressing towards the upper middle-income level.

Widespread utilization of glyphosate has led to environmental residues, posing potential threats to ecological systems and human health.Traditional methods for detection of glyphosate are limited by specialized equipment and operational techniques, resulting in inefficient responses. Therefore,it is urgent to develop a convenient, sensitive and accurate detection method for detection of glyphosate.Herein,a new naphthalenesulfonamide-based"Turn-on"fluorescent probe was synthesized using 2-chloroaniline and dansyl chloride as raw materials through a one-step process, which showed a good linear relationship between the glyphosate concentration in concentration range of 0.003-70 μmol/L and the fluorescence intensity(R2=0.995),with a detection limit of 2.73 nmol/L(S/N=3).Analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry(HRMS)were used to investigate the interaction mechanism between the fluorescent probe and glyphosate. The results indicated that a nucleophilic substitution reaction occurred between the probe and the secondary amine(—NH—)of glyphosate, inducing a photoinduced electron transfer(PET)effect which enhanced the fluorescence intensity by 11.2 times. The probe showed good anti-interference ability towards coexisting metal ions, anions and pesticides in water. When applied to determination of glyphosate in the samples such as tap water, river water(Xiangxi River Reservoir),soil, soybeans, and corn, the spiking recoveries ranged from 94.7%to 109.9%,demonstrating the high accuracy and broad applicability of this detection method.A portable test strip based on this fluorescent probe was developed for rapid semi-quantitative analysis of glyphosate. The developed method was rapid, sensitive, and portable, providing theoretical and technical support for on-site measurement of environmental contaminants.
