1.Development and verification of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography for determination of residual phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride in recombinant virus-like particle vaccine stock solution

Objective To develop a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography(RP-HPLC) method for the determination of residual phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride(PMSF) content in recombinant virus-like particle(VLP) vaccine stock solution,and to verify the method for the determination of PMSF residues in recombinant VLP vaccine stock solution.Methods A RP-HPLC method for the determination of PMSF residues was developed by screening detection wavelength,flow rate,injection amount and chromatographic column.The specificity,linearity and range,limit of quantitation(LOQ),limit of detection(LOD),accuracy,precision and durability of the method were verified.The developed method was used to detect PMSF residues in three batches of recombinant hepatitis E vaccine stock solution.Results The RP-HPLC method was developed,with ChromCore 300 C18(4.6 mm × 250 mm,5 μm) as the chromatographic column at the column temperature of 25 ℃,the detection wavelength of 210 nm,the injection amount of 100 μL,0.1% trifluoroacetic acid(TFA)/water and0.1% TFA/acetonitrile as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1 mL/min,and the detection time of 18 min.The absorption peaks of PMSF control and vaccine stock solution containing PMSF appeared around 5.0 min,while the vaccine stock solution and stock solution buffer showed no absorption peak.There was a good linear relationship between the concentration of PMSF control and peak area in the range of 0-5.0 μg/mL,with R~2 of 0.999.The LOQ and LOD of this method was 0.250 μg/mL and 0.125 μg/mL,respectively.The recovery rates of PMSF control with high,medium and low concentrations were all between 90% and 110%.The relative standard deviations(RSDs) of retention time,peak height and peak area for the determination of instrument repeatability,sample repeatability and intermediate precision were all less than 5%.The RSDs of retention time,peak height and peak area were all less than 5% under the TFA concentration of 0.09%,0.1% and 0.11% at column temperature of 20,25 and 30 ℃.PMSF was not detected in the three batches of recombinant hepatitis E vaccine stock solution.Conclusion The developed RP-HPLC method has good specificity,linearity and durability,high accuracy and precision,and can be used to detect residual PMSF content in recombinant VLP vaccine stock solution.

2.Improving Academic Outcomes Through Remediation: Insights from a Medical Education Pilot Study

Introduction:
This paper explores the impact of a remediation programme on medical students’ overall performance. It also suggests a potential remediation framework encompassing planned learning sessions by subject experts, individualised coaching from an alumni group, professional counselling for
psychological support, and participants’ learning commitment.
Methods:
Twenty-seven students were identified as academically weak students (AWS). This was done
based on two criteria: students who failed more than one mini test (out of six mini tests) during the
delivery of the first-year curriculum, and students who had to repeat the study after failing the end-of-year-1 (EOY-1) exam. A remediation strategy consisting of 1) planned learning sessions, 2) individualised alumni coaching sessions, and 3) counselling sessions were offered to these students. However, participation is optional (Group A (n=12) – participants and Group B (n=15) – non-participants). Evaluation of the remediation programme is performed using mixed-method analysis: 1) comparative analysis of the performance of Group A vs Group B, and 2) qualitative analysis using a semi-structured interview with openended questions to obtain students’ perceptions of the programme.
Results:
Group A showed significantly higher pass rates (83% vs. 66%, p < .001) in the EOY-1 exam. Interviews revealed positive perceptions of personalised alumni coaching and its role in enhancing learning and confidence.
Conclusion
The study concludes that early identification and targeted remediation support improve academic outcomes, benefit the student’s educational journey, and contribute to quality education.

3.Research on the relationship between resting-state spontaneous electroencephalography and task-evoked electroencephalography.

In recent years, it has become a new direction in the field of neuroscience to explore the mode characteristics, functional significance and interaction mechanism of resting spontaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and task-evoked EEG. This paper introduced the basic characteristics of spontaneous EEG and task-evoked EEG, and summarized the core role of spontaneous EEG in shaping the adaptability of the nervous system. It focused on how the spontaneous EEG interacted with the task-evoked EEG in the process of task processing, and emphasized that the spontaneous EEG could significantly affect the performance of tasks such as perception, cognition and movement by regulating neural activities and predicting external stimuli. These studies provide an important theoretical basis for in-depth understanding of the principle and mechanism of brain information processing in resting and task states, and point out the direction for further exploring the complex relationship between them in the future.

4.A Personalized Predictor of Motor Imagery Ability Based on Multi-frequency EEG Features.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) based on motor imagery (MI) provides additional control pathways by decoding the intentions of the brain. MI ability has great intra-individual variability, and the majority of MI-BCI systems are unable to adapt to this variability, leading to poor training effects. Therefore, prediction of MI ability is needed. In this study, we propose an MI ability predictor based on multi-frequency EEG features. To validate the performance of the predictor, a video-guided paradigm and a traditional MI paradigm are designed, and the predictor is applied to both paradigms. The results demonstrate that all subjects achieved > 85% prediction precision in both applications, with a maximum of 96%. This study indicates that the predictor can accurately predict the individuals' MI ability in different states, provide the scientific basis for personalized training, and enhance the effect of MI-BCI training.

5.Interactively Integrating Reach and Grasp Information in Macaque Premotor Cortex.

Reach-to-grasp movements require integrating information on both object location and grip type, but how these elements are planned and to what extent they interact remains unclear. We designed a new experimental paradigm in which monkeys sequentially received reach and grasp cues with delays, requiring them to retain and integrate both cues to grasp the goal object with appropriate hand gestures. Neural activity in the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) revealed that reach and grasp were similarly represented yet not independent. Upon receiving the second cue, the PMd continued encoding the first, but over half of the neurons displayed incongruent modulations: enhanced, attenuated, or even reversed. Population-level analysis showed significant changes in encoding structure, forming distinct neural patterns. Leveraging canonical correlation analysis, we identified a shared subspace preserving the initial cue's encoding, contributed by both congruent and incongruent neurons. Together, these findings reveal a novel perspective on the interactive planning of reach and grasp within the PMd, providing insights into potential applications for brain-machine interfaces.

6.High performance liquid chromatography analysis of the active ingredients and evaluation of anti-caries potential of Thai propolis extracts

Objective:
This study aimed to determine and quantify the presence of the active components in Thai propolis extracts using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, the anti-caries potential of Thai propolis extract and its active ingredients were tested.
Methods:
Fifty milligrams of Thai propolis were extracted using either 100%, 90%, 80%, or 70% ethanol and subsequently analyzed using HPLC with a mobile phase gradient system of 10-100% acetonitrile in 0.05% aqueous ortho-phosphoric acid, flow rate of 0.8 mL/min, and detection wavelength of 280 nm. Varying concentrations of Thai propolis extracts as well as four active ingredients were subjected to agar well diffusion test against the growth of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) or Lactobacillus caseii (L. caseii).
Results:
The concentrations of the four active ingredients: vicenin-2, vitexin, apigenin, and cinnamic acid, were significantly affected by ethanolic concentrations. The chromatographic peaks of all active ingredients from 70% and 80% ethanolic extracts appeared more defined, as compared to those which used higher concentrations of ethanol for extraction. Except for the absolute ethanolic extract, all of the examined propolis extracts, as well as its active ingredients inhibited both S. mutans and L. caseii.
Conclusions
Thai propolis extracts contain vicenin-2, vitexin, apigenin, and cinnamic acid as part of its active ingredients. These were found to be significantly affected by the increase in ethanol during its extraction. The presence of these active ingredients might have contributed to the anti-caries potential of Thai propolis extracts.

BACKGROUND
Nursing, as a profession, is a facet where job satisfaction and performance matter. In the changing landscape of nursing practice in the Philippines and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to revisit and to perform an empirical investigation of the current state of nurses' job satisfaction and performance in the hospital setting. This study aimed to describe the job satisfaction and performance among staff nurses in private and government hospitals in Baguio City.
DESIGNUsing a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional survey design, a sample of 313 randomly selected staff nurses working in two private and two government hospitals in Baguio City were surveyed from March to April 2023, using a questionnaire. This study's protocol was approved by two ethics committees, namely the Saint Louis University Research Ethics Committee and the BGHMC REC. Nominal data was analyzed using the SPSS trial version employing frequencies, percentages, and the Chi-square test.
FINDINGSThere are more staff nurses in both private and government hospitals who reported satisfactory job satisfaction levels (276 nurses, 87.9%) and had good job performance (303 nurses, 96.5%) in all domains. However, results show that there are more nurses (209 nurses, 90.7% ) in government hospitals who are satisfied with their jobs than in private hospital nurses (67 nurses, 80.1%) in the domains Intra practice Partnership/Collegiality (p=0.010); Challenge/Autonomy (p=0.001); Professional, Social and Community Interaction (p=0.010); Professional Growth (p=0.036); Time (p=0.009); and Benefits (p=0.045). In terms of job performance, more government nurses at 97.3% (224 nurses) rated a higher self-appraisal of job performance. In comparison, only 94.8% (79 nurses) of private staff nurses appraised themselves as having good performance. No significant differences were found in the domains of job performance, namely leadership, teaching, planning, communications, and professional development, except in critical care. In "Critical care," which showed significance, the results suggest that more nurses in government hospitals perceive higher job performance, revealing a significant difference (p=0.011) in the "critical care" domain, indicating that a higher proportion of nurses in government hospitals demonstrate superior performance in this area.
CONCLUSIONThrough this study, it was learned that nurses in both private and government hospitals generally experience high job satisfaction and performance, reflecting a fulfilled workforce and indicating commendable competency among the staff nurses. However, more nurses in government hospitals report high satisfaction and perceived performance in critical care compared to those in private hospitals. Thus, the findings of this study can contribute to and serve as a rationale for policy making regarding creating a positive work environment, proper management and leadership, creation of training and skill development for critical care, providing opportunities for professional growth, and conducting regular evaluation and feedback----- all geared towards a satisfied and productive workforce.

8.Effect of Knee Joint Rotational Stability on Sport Performance After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Objective To investigate the effects of rotation stability after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) on subjective outcomes,sport performance,psychological readiness,and return to sport. Methods The patients who underwent ACLR in the Sports Hospital,National Institute of Sports Medicine,General Administration of Sport of China from January 2015 to January 2021 were followed up during the period from November 2022 to December 2023.The patients were grouped according to the results of the pivot shift test (PST) of the affected knee at the last follow-up visit.A total of 66 patients who participated in the follow-up and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were finally enrolled in this study,including 32 patients showing a negative PST result (stable group) and 34 patients showing a positive PST result (unstable group).The basic information,subjective function score,and return-to-sport performance were compared between the two groups. Results In terms of sport performance,the two groups showed differences in the limb symmetry index in single-leg hops,triple hops,and crossover hops (P=0.028,P=0.024,and P=0.044,respectively).The anterior cruciate ligament-return to sport after injury scale score was higher in the stable group than in the unstable group [(70.44±22.82) scores vs. (53.44±21.74) scores,P=0.003].The mean of KT-2000 test results in the stable group was lower than that in the unstable group [(0.53±1.02) mm vs. (2.06±2.31) mm,P=0.001].The Lysholm score,international knee documentation committee score,knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score,Tegner score,and Marx score did not have significance between the two groups (all P>0.05).The return-to-sport rate was 43.8% (including 14.3% reaching safe return criteria,which accounted for 6.3% in all the patients) in the stable group and 35.3% (including 8.3% reaching safe return criteria,which accounted for 2.9% in all the patients) in the unstable group.There was no difference in the 60°/s isokinetic muscle strength,maximal muscle strength ratio of the affected extensor-flexor muscles,or Y-balance test result between the two groups (all P>0.05). Conclusions Knee joint rotational instability after ACLR results in poor performance in single-leg hops,triple hops,and crossover hops,low psychological readiness,and anterior-posterior knee laxity.In short- to medium-term follow-up for ACLR,the return-to-sport rate remained low regardless of knee joint rotational stability,with the majority of patients failing to meet safe return criteria.

INTRODUCTION:
The landscape of work has changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as more
companies shifted from face-to-face to the work-from-home (WFH) setup. This change has affected several
aspects of human life especially the motivation to WFH. The study aimed to determine the motivation
of WFH among office workers in the National Capital Region (NCR) from March 2020 to February 2022
METHODS:
Using a descriptive cross-sectional study design, an online survey of WFH office workers around
the NCR, Philippines was conducted. A 26-item questionnaire on motivation covering dimensions of
availability (flexibility), safety (work-life balance), and meaningfulness (work performance) was used. Data
was analyzed using SPSS version 24.
RESULTS:
A total of 252 respondents were included in the study, with a majority identifying as females
aged 21 to 30, never married, and college graduates. Additionally, respondents reported having one to
five years of work experience and were employed in professional/technical/managerial fields. Regarding
the impact of remote work, the findings indicated that most individuals who worked from home (WFH)
felt motivated by this setup due to its positive effects on availability, time and cost savings from reduced
commuting, and the flexibility it provided for managing their schedules according to personal preferences.
Furthermore, in terms of safety and conducive work environment, WFH office workers expressed agreement
that the remote work setup contributed to a favorable work environment, leading to increased job
satisfaction. This setup allowed them to effectively balance work responsibilities with personal and family
commitments. The study also revealed that WFH office workers perceived a sense of meaningfulness in
their work, as they felt trusted and valued by their employers. This sentiment contributed to their overall
well-being, both physically and mentally
CONCLUSION
Work-from-home office workers are generally always motivated in terms of availability
(flexibility), safety (work-life balance) and meaningfulness (work performance).

Genetic factors play a key role in human athletic ability, and endurance quality and explosive power quality are the important components of athletic ability. In this review, we aimed to reveal the biological genetic mechanism of human athletic ability at the molecular level through summarizing the relationship between genetic variants and human athletic ability, including endurance quality related genetic markers angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene, creatine kinase MM (CKMM) gene and explosive power quality related genetic markers alpha actinin 3 (ACTN3) gene, angiotensinogen (AGT) gene and interleukin6 (IL6) gene. Meanwhile, we also summarized the distribution of allele frequencies among various populations.
