1.Herbal teas for gastritis: A narrative review and bibliometric analysis of Acorus calamus, Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, and Piper betle

Introduction: Medicinal herbs Acorus calamus, Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, and
Piper betle have been traditionally used for treating stomach-related conditions such as
irregular bowel movement, bloating, and gastric ulcers. The present study aimed to explore
current status, research trends, and future directions of these herbs as functional herbal
teas in prevention and treatment of gastritis. Methods: A total of 80 articles from Scopus
database were retrieved and reviewed. Research trends were quantitatively analysed
using VOSviewer software, focusing on the keywords, authors, countries, journals, and
documents. A narrative review was integrated to provide comprehensive insights into the
study. Results: Analysis revealed China and India as driving forces of this specific area
of research, with the Journal of Ethnopharmacology emerging as a prominent source for
publications in this field. “Curcumin”, “ginger”, and “Helicobacter pylori” were the main
keywords of the study. Several gastroprotective mechanisms, including stimulation of
mucosal proliferation, regulation of gastric acid production, reduction of inflammation
in the gastric mucosa, protection of the gastric mucosa from oxidative damage, and
inhibition of the growth of H. pylori, were associated with these herbs. Active compounds,
such as α-asarone, curcumin, gingerol, and piperbetol, were found to be responsible
for these effects. Conclusion: This study highlights various gastroprotective properties
of A. calamus, C. longa, Z. officinale, and P. betle, providing researchers with a deeper
understanding of the subject matter and opening new avenues for potential development
into a functional herbal tea formulation known as “Lega Tea” (Relief Tea).
2.Anti-acanthamoebic activity of methanolic extract of Piper sarmentosum leaves

Aims:
Piper sarmentosum or locally known as Kaduk, is a tropical herb plant that was investigated for its phenolic content by previous researchers. The present study aimed at the analysis of crude methanolic extract of P. sarmentosum leaves for phenolic compounds identification and its anti-amoebic properties against pathogenic Acanthamoeba castellanii.
Methodology and results:
Folin-Ciocalteu assay was used to determine P. sarmentosum leaves methanolic extract (PSLME)’s total phenolic content (TPC). The extract was further characterized by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analyses to determine the chemical constituents in methanolic PSLME extract. The cytotoxicity of the extract was evaluated through the determination of inhibition concentration for half of cell population (IC50) of pathogenic A. castellanii followed by cell morphological analysis using inverted light and scanning electron microscopies. Acridine-orange/Propidium iodide (AOPI) staining was also conducted to determine the integrity of cell membrane for quantitative analysis. The results demonstrated that the TPC from PSLME was 142.72 mg [GAE]/g with a total of 33 phenolic compounds identified. The IC50 value obtained for A. castellanii was low (74.64 μg/mL) which indicates promising anti-acanthamoebic activity. Microscopy analyses showed that the plant extract caused cells encystment, in which exhibited by distinctive morphological changes on the cells shape and organelle, as well as shortening of acanthopodia. The dual staining and its quantitative analysis prove compromised membrane integrity in the treated amoeba.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
This finding provides the evidence that PSLME contains active phenolic compounds contributing to the anti-acanthamoebic activity on pathogenic Acanthamoeba species.

3.Doses to Organs at Risk Calculated Using Plato and Oncentra Softwares in Intracavitary Brachytherapy Dos kepada Organ Berisiko yang Dikirakan Menggunakan Perisian Plato dan Oncentra bagi Brakiterapi Intrakaviti

This is a retrospective study, the organ doses of the bladder and the rectum were compared between routine PLATO
V14.2.3 (Nucletron B.V., Veenendaal, The Netherlands) and newer version software Oncentra MasterPlan (OMP) V4.3
(Nucletron B.V., Veenendaal, The Netherlands) treatment planning systems (TPS). The treatment data of 32 intracavitary
brachytherapy patients at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia from January 2010 to June 2015 were used. These data
sets were used for catheter reconstruction for both PLATO and OMP TPS followed by independent verification using
Excel. There was no significant difference in mean doses to organs at risk (OARs) that calculated by both TPS (p>0.05).
The mean percentage of doses calculated by PLATO TPS for bladder and rectum were 66.58 ± 27.42% and 46.27 ±
14.47%, respectively. While, the mean percentage of doses for bladder and rectum calculated by OMP TPS were 65.68
± 24.24% and 46.46 ± 16.66%, respectively. The mean percentage difference in doses comparison between independent
verification calculation and PLATO TPS was 1.96 ± 6.00% and then became 6.37 ± 5.17% when it was compared with
OMP TPS. Overall, the dose calculation differences for both versions of TPS were within the range recommended by
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The dose calculations of the two treatment planning systems showed good
agreement and both could be used in planning intracavitary brachytherapy for cervical cancer. Whereas, Excel based
independent verification is suitable to be implemented as routine dose verification programme prior to treatment
delivery.
