Purpose: The male predominance in the incidence of gastric cancer (GC) is established; however, sex differences in the prognosis of GC remain controversial. As such, this study analyzed the prognosis of patients with GC based on age and sex. Materials and Methods: Data from 14,739 patients diagnosed with GC at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between 2003 and 2023 were analyzed. Baseline characteristics, histological types of GC, overall and GC-specific survival rates (age and stage stratification), and associated risk factors were analyzed. Results: Females were significantly younger (p < 0.001) and exhibited more gastric body cancers (p < 0.001) and tumors with diffuse-type or poorly differentiated histology (p < 0.001) than males. Females exhibited an advantage over males in terms of overall survival (p=0.004), but not in GC-specific survival. However, age stratification revealed significant sex differences, that females < 50 years of age exhibited survival disadvantages (p < 0.001); however, this trend was reversed with age, and females > 60 years exhibited survival advantages (p < 0.001) for both overall and GC-specific survival. This may be explained by the lower ratio of diffuse-type GC as females age. Furthermore, in the analysis according to stage, females with stage IV disease exhibited significant survival disadvantages, with significantly younger age and a higher proportion of diffuse-type GC which exhibits aggressive features, resulting in poorer survival than in males. Conclusion Age and stage stratification revealed significant differences in survival between the sexes, which can be helpful for public health strategies.

The medical journal publishing environment in Korea has changed rapidly since the 2010s owing to the expanded influence of international indexing databases, changes in research performance evaluation systems, and the strengthening of research and publication ethics. Amid these changes, the Journal of Yeungnam Medical Science (JYMS) has successfully advanced from a local journal to an international journal through a series of strategic transformations, including the appointment of a Managing Editor in 2011, conversion to an English journal in 2018, introduction of an online manuscript submission and peer review system in 2020, and transition to continuous article publishing in 2025. Consequently, it has been indexed in major international indexing databases, including the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). Notably, in 2025, international submissions increased substantially, with foreign authors accounting for 79.1% of the total submissions. In addition, citation metrics such as Journal Impact Factor and CiteScore increased. These achievements were supported by the dedicated efforts of the editorial board members, volunteer peer reviewers, and the local and international authors who submitted high-quality manuscripts, together with the establishment of standardized editorial policies and systematic quality control procedures. However, practical challenges remain, including financial constraints, staffing structures, workflow continuity, and difficulties securing peer reviewers. The JYMS case demonstrates that journal internationalization is a long-term process enabled by sustained investment, establishment of professional infrastructure, and organizational support. This suggests that collective academic commitment and stable operational systems are essential for the sustainable development of journals.

Alterations in gait patterns often indicate health status, and their analysis enables the diagnosis and assessment of various health conditions. This study aimed to develop a noncontact gait analysis system using red, green, and blue-depth (RGB-D) cameras and to evaluate its potential clinical applicability. A single case study was conducted to assess changes in the gait patterns of a patient with stroke before and after the application of an ankle-foot orthosis. Twenty walking trials were recorded to evaluate the key gait parameters. The custom RGB-D camera-based gait analysis system demonstrated the potential to rapidly quantify key gait parameters in the patient. Compared with normative data, it effectively identified characteristic stroke-related gait impairments such as shorter step lengths and slower gait speeds. However, the intraclass correlation coefficient analysis indicated low measurement reliability. Although the stance time and minimum knee angle on the left and right sides exceeded the standard error of measurement (SEM), no changes exceeded the minimal detectable change (MDC) criteria. Moreover, other gait parameters did not show significant changes beyond SEM or MDC, limiting the interpretability of the results. Therefore, further technological developments and data collection are required to improve test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change.

After a year of exchange in Montreal, a South Korean academic physiatrist and his Canadian colleague have reflected on the strengths and weaknesses of their respective healthcare systems. They have focused more specifically on physiatrist-delivered pain medicine treatments. This article is written based on personal perspectives. It aims to present the differences between the systems in South Korea and Quebec, highlighting the issues arising from each system and providing perspectives on potential solutions.

Background: Tinnitus is a multifactorial condition with no universally accepted assessment guidelines. The Korean Tinnitus Study Group previously established consensus statements on the definition, classification, and diagnostic tests for tinnitus. As a continuation of this effort, this study aims to establish expert consensus on tinnitus assessment and treatment outcome evaluation, specifically tailored to the Korean clinical context. Methods: A modified Delphi method involving 26 otology experts from across Korea was used. A two-round Delphi survey was conducted to evaluate statements related to tinnitus assessment before and after treatment. Statements were rated on a scale of 1 to 9 for the level of agreement. Consensus was defined as ≥ 70% agreement (score of 7–9) and ≤ 15% disagreement (score of 1–3). Statistical measures such as content validity ratio and Kendall’s coefficient of concordance (W) were calculated to assess agreement levels. Results: Of the 46 assessment-related statements, 17 (37%) reached consensus, though overall pre-treatment assessments showed weak agreement (Kendall’s W = 0.319). Key areas of agreement included the use of the visual analogue scale, numeric rating scale, and validated questionnaires for pre-treatment evaluation. Five statements, such as the use of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography for diagnosing pulsatile tinnitus, achieved over 90% agreement. For treatment outcome measurements, 8 of 12 statements (67%) reached a consensus, with moderate agreement (Kendall’s W = 0.513). Validated questionnaires and psychoacoustic tests were recommended for evaluating treatment effects within 12 weeks. While standardized imaging for pulsatile tinnitus and additional clinical tests were strongly recommended, full consensus was not achieved across all imaging modalities. Conclusion This study provides actionable recommendations for tinnitus assessment and treatment evaluation, emphasizing the use of standardized tools and individualized approaches based on patient needs. These findings offer a practical framework to enhance consistency and effectiveness in tinnitus management within Korean clinical settings.

Background: Anterior dislocation in epilepsy patients is relatively severe, difficult to treat, and prone to recurrence. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of arthroscopic Bankart repair and the open Latarjet procedure in epilepsy patients who had anterior shoulder instability and to compare the results of the open Latarjet procedure in epilepsy and non-epileptic groups. Methods: A total of 57 shoulders (34 dominant) in 55 patients (18–50 years, 45 men and 10 women) with anterior glenohumeral instability were included in the study and the average follow-up was 24 months. Out of 21 epilepsy patients (23 shoulders), 11 were treated with the open Latarjet procedure and 12 with arthroscopic Bankart repair. Additionally, comparisons were made between the 34 non-epileptic patients who underwent the open Latarjet procedure and the epilepsy patients who underwent the same procedure. Results: In the epilepsy group, all 12 patients who underwent Bankart repair had on-track lesions, and all 11 patients who underwent the Latarjet procedure had off-track lesions. In the non-epilepsy group, all cases were off-track lesions. In the epilepsy group, there was no significant difference in the postoperative clinical outcome and recurrence rate between the Bankart repair and Latarjet procedure groups. In the Latarjet group, postoperative re-dislocation rate in the non-epilepsy patients was 14% (5/34 cases), compared to 45% (5/11 cases) in the epilepsy patients, 4 of which 4 occurred during seizures. It was 41% in the Bankart repair group for on-track lesions, which was similar to the recurrence rate after the Latarjet for off-track lesions in the epilepsy group. Conclusions After the Latarjet procedure, the functional outcomes in the epilepsy group were similar to those in the non-epilepsy group, except for the higher re-dislocation rate. With either of the surgical procedures, the re-dislocation rate secondary to seizures was very high. Despite the presence of on-track lesions, the Latarjet procedure would be more preferrable for anterior stabilization in epilepsy patients, in view of the high recurrence rate with arthroscopic Bankart repair.
