Purpose: Lung cancer is frequently observed as a second primary malignancy following gastric cancer, yet the genetic causality between them remains uncertain. This study aims to evaluate the causal relationship between gastric and lung cancers using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Materials and Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with gastric and lung cancers were selected from genome-wide association study in East Asian and European populations as instrumental variables. The causal effects between gastric and lung cancers were evaluated using univariable and multivariable MR analysis, with the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method serving as the primary criterion. Heterogeneity and sensitivity analyses were performed to ensure the robustness of the findings. Results: Univariable MR analysis demonstrated that genetic susceptibility to gastric cancer in the European population was significantly associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (IVW: odds ratio [OR], 1.285; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.072 to 1.541; p=6.83E-03), which was consistently validated in the East Asian population (IVW: OR, 1.356; 95% CI, 1.114 to 1.651; p=2.40E-03). Multivariable MR analysis further indicated that the significant positive causal relationship between gastric cancer and lung cancer persisted in both populations after adjusting for confounding factors (all p < 0.05). Conversely, no significant causal relationship was observed for the risk of developing gastric cancer following the diagnosis of lung cancer in either population (p > 0.05). Conclusion This study confirms that genetic susceptibility to gastric cancer increases the risk of lung cancer. This finding provides a theoretical basis for exploring the underlying biological mechanisms and suggests that enhancing lung cancer screening in patients with gastric cancer may be necessary to improve patient prognosis.

In China, the crude oil supply is highly dependent on overseas countries, and thus strengthening crude oil self-sufficiency has become an important issue of the national energy security. Tertiary oil recovery, especially polymer flooding, has been widely applied in large oil fields in China, which can increase the recovery rate by 15%-20% compared with water flooding. However, the widely used oil flooding polymers show poor thermal stability and salinity tolerance, complicated synthesis ways of monomers, and environmental unfriendliness. Moreover, the polymer flooding induces problems including pore plugging, heterogeneity intensification, high dispersion of remaining oil resources, pressure rise in injection wells, and low efficiency circulation of injection medium, which restrict the subsequent recovery of old oil fields. Here, we systematically review the developing and current situations of polymer flooding, introduce the innovative biomanufacturing of oil flooding polymers and their monomers or precursors as well as low-cost bio-based chemical raw materials for multiple compound flooding. The comprehensive study of the relationships between microbial fermentation metabolites and polymer flooding will reveal the green and low-carbon paths for polymer flooding. Such study will enable the application of enzymes produced by microorganisms in polymer production and polymer plugging removal after polymer flooding as well as the application of microbial metabolites such as biosurfactants, organic acids, alcohols, biogas, and amino acids in enhancing oil recovery. This review suggests that incorporating biomanufacturing into polymer flooding will ensure the high productivity and stability for crude oil production in China.

Synthetic biology is a crucial tool for the development of the bio-industry and bio-economy, representing a significant aspect of new quality productive forces. As a core course for graduate students in bioengineering, Synthetic Biology plays a vital role in ensuring the supply of essential talents for the development of the bio-industry in the new era. To better serve regional economic development and provide high-level talents for China's progress in the bio-industry, we analyzed typical issues encountered in the past teaching activities, set up a multi-disciplinary teaching team, optimized the course contents, adjusted the teaching mode, and mobilized students' learning interest. With the application of scientific research project as the starting point, we guided students to think and discuss deeply through the simulation of application writing and project defense, which improved students' critical thinking and innovative thinking. With industrialization as a focus, we explored a new training model combining production, education, and research through the joint practice base of the university and enterprises introduced typical cases of biomanufacturing to encourage students to engage in scientific research. The teaching reform significantly enhances the comprehensive abilities and national sentiments of graduate students. This paper hopes to serve as a reference for colleagues engaged in teaching in this field.

Postoperative lower limb lymphedema following gynecological malignancies can be categorized under TCM concepts of"edema"and"meridian obstruction".Professor Jia Liqun believes that the underlying deficiency lies in yang and blood deficiency,while the excess is characterized by dampness and blood stasis obstructing the meridians.Consequently,the treatment strategies include warming yang and nourishing blood to unblock the meridians,dispelling dampness and promoting diuresis to unblock the meridians,and transforming stasis and promoting diuresis to unblock the meridians.Clinical practice requires dynamic syndrome differentiation and treatment according to the disease progression.Additionally,Professor Jia often employs the external application of Wenjing Tongluo Powder to directly target the affected area,combining internal and external treatments to enhance the effect of unblocking the meridians and reducing swelling.

Objective To investigate the current situation of frailty in patients with home peritoneal dialysis and analyze its influencing factors,so as to provide bases for early identification of high-risk groups and targeted clinical intervention.Methods From October to December 2024,205 home-based peritoneal dialysis patients under long-term follow-up at a tertiary A hospital in Zhongshan,Guangdong Province,were selected by convenience sampling.The General Information Questionnaire,Fried Phenotype Scale,Nutritional Risk Screening Tool,Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale,and Social Support Rating Scale were used to investigate the influencing factors of frailty in home-based peritoneal dialysis patients by ordinal logistic regression analysis.Results A total of 201 valid questionnaires were collected.The prevalence of frailty among home-based peritoneal dialysis patients was 24.3％,while 39.3％were in the pre-frailty stage,and 36.3％showed no frailty.0rdinal logistic regression analysis revealed that age,residence location,primary disease,sleep status,serum albumin concentration,and exercise self-efficacy level were influencing factors of frailty in the home peritoneal dialysis patients(P＜0.05).Conclusion The incidence of frailty in patients with home peritoneal dialysis is higher,and patients with advanced age,living in rural areas,other types of primary diseases,insomnia,low serum albumin concentration and low exercise self-efficacy are more likely to develop frailty.Specialist doctors and nurses of peritoneal dialysis should pay attention to the early screening of frailty in patients with peritoneal dialysis at home,and take personalized intervention measures to prevent or delay the occurrence of frailty according to the relevant risk factors.

Objective:To summarize the surgical strategies and to evaluate the clinical outcomes of up-per urinary tract reconstruction in patients with stone-related ureteral strictures.Methods:This retro-spective study included 71 patients diagnosed with ureteral strictures secondary to urinary stones who un-derwent upper urinary tract reconstructive surgery at Peking University First Hospital between March 2014 and November 2023.Patient data were collected,including demographic characteristics,clinical presen-tation,laboratory results,imaging findings,surgical procedures,and follow-up outcomes.Ureteral stric-tures were classified according to anatomical location into upper,middle,lower,or multiple segments.Surgical procedures were carried out depending on the stricture characteristics.Surgical success was de-fined as resolution or improvement of clinical symptoms,radiographic improvement or stabilization of hy-dronephrosis,and maintenance of normal and stable renal function.Results:Among the 71 patients,36(50.7％)had strictures in the upper ureter,9(12.7％)in the middle ureter,15(21.1％)in the lower ureter,and 11(15.5％)had multifocal ureteral strictures.The median stricture length was 5.0 cm(interquartile range:3.0-15.0 cm).Surgical approach selection was individualized based on the location and extent of the stricture.For upper ureteral strictures,the most frequently employed techniques were oral mucosal graft ureteroplasty(13/36,36.1％)and appendiceal flap ureteroplasty(8/36,22.2％).Other options included ureteroureterostomy and ileal ureter replacement for longer or more complex strictures.In middle ureteral strictures,treatment was stratified by length:balloon dilation(1/9,11.1％)and ureteroureterostomy(1/9,11.1％)were applied in shorter strictures,while oral mucosal graft ureteroplasty(3/9,33.3％)and ileal ureter replacement(4/9,44.4％)were reserved for longer segments.For lower ureteral strictures,ureteral reimplantation into the bladder was the most common approach(10/15,66.7％),often combined with a psoas hitch or Boari flap when necessary.All the patients with multiple segmental strictures underwent ileal ureter replacement due to the extensive nature of the disease.The median follow-up period was 14.2 months(range:6.1-107.1 months).During follow-up,69 of 71 patients(97.2％)achieved surgical success.Conclusion:Stone-related ure-teral strictures present with considerable heterogeneity in terms of anatomical location,length,and com-plexity.Careful preoperative evaluation and individualized surgical planning are critical to successful re-construction.With appropriate selection of surgical methods,favorable long-term clinical outcomes can be achieved in the majority of patients.

Visual system is a critical sensory system in humans and a vital component of the central nervous system, which is responsible for over 80% of external information acquisition.Visual function is a key indicator of overall health.With socioeconomic development, the public has higher expectations for eye health, shifting the focus of eye health initiatives from disease treatment to comprehensive public eye health.Key scientific challenges include how to effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat blindness and visual impairment at an early stage; how to enhance the overall visual quality of patients to ensure not just sight but clear and comfortable vision; and how to meet the public's diverse and multi-tiered eye health needs.Visual science is an interdisciplinary field exploring the development of the visual system, the mechanisms of vision, and brain-related perceptual, cognitive and behavioral processes involving sight.Prioritizing and advancing visual science research is of great significance for promoting comprehensive eye health and implementing the Healthy China Strategy.This article first outlines the concept and research significance of visual science.It then highlights the key scientific questions in visual science pertaining to several major eye diseases, such as myopia, amblyopia, cataract, fundus diseases, glaucoma, and corneal diseases, reviews the historical foundation of visual science research in China, selectively summarizes key achievements and ongoing progress in this field, analyzes the landscape and challenges faced by domestic research, and proposes, to this end, strategies to advance visual science in China.These recommendations are designed to promote visual science research in China and ultimately advance comprehensive eye health.
