Journal of Preventive Medicine 2025;37(5):486-489
Objective:
To analyze the phylogenetic characteristics of VP1 gene of Coxsackievirus A10 (CVA10) isolates from 2004 to 2023, and to understand the genetic evolution and epidemic trends of CVA10, so as to provide references for the prevention and control of hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Methods:
The full-length sequences of the VP1 region of CVA10 isolates were retrieved from the BV-BRC database before December 15, 2024. Gene typing, sequence analysis, evolutionary analysis, and amino acid mutation site analysis were conducted using bioinformatics software.
Results:
A total of 1 253 CVA10 isolates VP1 region nucleotide full-length sequences from 2004 to 2023 were included, with 9 strains from 2004 to 2008, 338 strains from 2009 to 2012, and 906 strains from 2013 to 2023. China had the highest number of CVA10 isolates, with 1 143 strains accounting for 91.22%, and the predominant genotype was C3. Compared to the prototype strain, the nucleotide sequence homology of the VP1 region of CVA10 isolates ranged from 74.94% to 77.63%, while the amino acid sequence homology ranged from 88.59% to 93.62%. The third codon position preferred cytosine and thymine. The top three most abundant amino acids were threonine, alanine, and valine. The average relative synonymous codon usage of 30 amino acid codon groups was greater than 1. The average amino acid substitution entropy value was 0.04, with four amino acid mutation-prone sites identified, and the mutation-prone rate was 1.35%.
Conclusions
From 2004 to 2023, the majority of CVA10 isolates were primarily sourced from China, with genotype C3 being the predominant circulating strain in China. The nucleotide homology between the CVA10 isolates and the prototype strain was relatively low, and mutation-prone sites were identified, indicating that enhanced monitoring of viral variation is necessary.

Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics and risk factors of airway mucus plugging in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD).Methods:This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 322 hospitalized AECOPD patients admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University from February 2023 to February 2025 were enrolled. Based on chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings of airway mucus plugging, patients were classified into mucus plugging and non-mucus plugging groups. General and clinical data were collected, including age, sex, disease duration, smoking and alcohol history, comorbidities, number of acute exacerbations in the past year, routine blood tests, biochemical indices, pulmonary function, and pathogen detection. The incidence of airway mucus plugging in AECOPD patients was calculated, and differences in baseline characteristics, laboratory parameters, and pulmonary function between the two groups were compared. Logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors for mucus plugging, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to evaluate the predictive value of relevant indicators. Results:Of the 322 enrolled patients, 87(27.02%) were found to have airway mucus plugging. Univariate analysis revealed statistically significant differences between the mucus plug group and the non-plug group in the following parameters (all P<0.05): body mass index (BMI), disease duration, smoking status, Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classification, modified British Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale, COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, frequency of acute exacerbations, neutrophil percentage, absolute lymphocyte count, lymphocyte percentage, albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, fibrin(ogen) degradation products, D-dimer, Aspergillus infection rate, percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to predicted value (FEV 1%pred), ratio of FEV 1 to forced vital capacity (FEV 1/FVC), and percentage of maximal mid-expiratory flow to predicted value (MMEF 75/25%pred). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the following as independent risk factors for airway mucus plugs (all P<0.05): elevated CRP ( OR=1.022, 95% CI: 1.013-1.036), decreased albumin ( OR=0.891, 95% CI: 0.825-0.959), Aspergillus infection ( OR=1.774, 95% CI: 1.366-2.317), and reduced MMEF 75/25%pred value ( OR=0.978, 95% CI: 0.964-0.990). ROC curve analysis showed that the combined predictive model incorporating CRP, albumin, Aspergillus infection, and MMEF 75/25%pred had an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.776(95% CI: 0.714-0.838), which was superior to each individual indicator alone, with AUCs of 0.721 for CRP, 0.687 for albumin, 0.579 for Aspergillus infection, and 0.631 for MMEF 75/25%pred. Conclusions:AECOPD patients with airway mucus plugging exhibit higher inflammatory markers, poorer nutritional status, a higher likelihood of Aspergillus infection, worse pulmonary function, and poorer prognosis. Aspergillus infection, elevated CRP, decreased albumin, and reduced MMEF 75/25%pred are independent risk factors for mucus plugs in AECOPD.

Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic disease characterized by decreased bone mass, leading to an increased risk of fractures. Although osteoporosis in children and adolescents is rare, its incidence in younger populations is showing an increasingly notable trend. The diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis in children and adolescents include a bone mineral density(BMD) Z-score of≤-2.0 accompanied by a significant fracture history, defined as two or more long bone fractures before the age of 10, three or more long bone fractures before the age of 19, or the presence of low-energy vertebral compression fractures even in the absence of low BMD. The genetic causes and underlying mechanisms of pediatric osteoporosis remain largely unknown, requiring further research to elucidate the molecular pathways involved. Such advances could help reduce the disease′s impact on growth and development and improve the quality of life in affected children and adolescents.

Objective:To learn about both the distribution of resources of radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic and the frequencies of radiological examinations to provide a basis for rational allocation of medical resources and standardize medical ionizing radiation. Methods:Based on the data on permanent resident population and the data reported by the Suzhou medical institutions in possesion of radiological equipment to the " Suzhou radiological health information management platform", a summary was made of the number of items of radiological equipment and the frequencies of radiological examinations in Suzhou medical institutions in 2022 and 2023.Results:In 2023, there were 368 medical institutions with radiological equipment in Suzhou, including 28 tertiary hospitals, 58 secondary hospitals, 159 primary hospitals and 123 unrated others. The total number of the items of radiological equipment was 1 688, with 39 items more than in 2022, about 1.30 units per 10 000 population. There were 5 187 medical radiation workers in total, with 339 more than in 2022. The frequencies of radiological procedures were 1 157.961/per thousand population, with 37.70% being from computed tomography in 2023.Conclusions:The number of items of radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic equipment and the frequencies of radiological procedures was at a relatively high level in China, but the distribution of medical resources were in a unbanlanced state. Efforts should be focused on optimization of the allocation of medical resources for the sake of reducing the public radiation dose and protecting public health.

Chinese Journal of Trauma 2025;41(6):530-541
Paraplegia caused by spinal cord injury is a serious neurological complication, for which surgery is currently the main treatment method. Due to different surgical approaches, patients are usually expected to maintain a passive prone position for a long time or switch between the supine and prone positions. Affected by multiple factors such as neurogenic sensory disorders, pathological changes in muscle tone and operative duration, the risk of intraoperative acquired pressure injury (IAPI) is significantly increased. Current clinical prevention strategies for IAPI in these patients predominantly focus on localized pressure relief during positioning, lacking systematic, standardized comprehensive prevention protocols or evidence-based guidelines. To address it, Department of Nursing, Orthopedics Branch, China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, Spinal Trauma Professional Committee, Orthopedics Branch, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Nursing Group of Spine and Spinal Cord Professional Committee of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine organized experts in relevant fields to formulate Guideline for the prevention of intraoperative acquired pressure injury in paraplegic patients with spinal cord injury ( version 2025), based on evidence-based medical evidence and latest research results and clinical practice at home and abroad. Eleven recommendations were put forward from the aspects of preoperative risk assessment, intraoperative prevention strategies, postoperative handover and monitoring, and supportive mechanisms for IAPI prevention, aiming to standardize the prevention measures and management strategies of IAPI in paraplegic patients with spinal cord injury and accelerate the recovery of patients and improve the therapeutic effect.

OBJECTIVES:
To investigate the effects of quercetin on cuproptosis and L-type calcium currents in the myocardium of diabetic rats.
METHODS:
Forty SD rats were randomized into control group and diabetic model groups. The rat models of diabetes mellitus (DM) induced by high-fat and high-sugar diet combined with streptozotocin (STZ) injection were further divided into DM model group, quercetin treatment group, and empagliflozin treatment group (n=10). Blood glucose and body weight were measured every other week, and cardiac function of the rats was evaluated using echocardiography. HE staining, Sirius red staining, and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) analysis were used to observe the changes in myocardial histomorphology, and serum copper levels and myocardial FDX1 expression were detected. In cultured rat cardiomyocyte H9c2 cells with high-glucose exposure, the effects of quercetin and elesclomol, alone or in combination, on intracellular CK-MB and LDH levels and FDX1 expression were assessed, and the changes in L-type calcium currents were analyzed using patch-clamp technique.
RESULTS:
The diabetic rats exhibited elevated blood glucose, reduced body weight, impaired left ventricular function, increased serum copper levels and myocardial FDX1 expression, decreased L-type calcium currents, and prolonged action potential duration. Quercetin and empagliflozin treatment significantly lowered blood glucose, improved body weight, and restored cardiac function of the diabetic rats, and compared with empagliflozin, quercetin more effectively reduced serum copper levels, downregulated FDX1 expression, and enhanced myocardial L-type calcium currents in diabetic rats. In H9c2 cells, high glucose exposure significantly increased myocardial expressions of FDX1, CK-MB and LDH, which were effectively lowered by quercetin treatment; Elesclomol further elevated FDX1, CK-MB and LDH levels in the exposed cells, and these changes were not significantly affected by the application of quercetin.
CONCLUSIONS
Quercetin ameliorates myocardial injury in diabetic rats possibly by suppressing myocardial cuproptosis signaling and restoring L-type calcium channel activity.

Journal of China Pharmaceutical University 2025;56(5):548-556
Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) exhibits elevated expression levels in a variety of cancers and has emerged as a critical target for cancer therapy in recent years. However, first-generation PRMT5 inhibitors have exhibited inadequate selectivity, leading to significant hematological toxicity, thus limiting their clinical utility. The second-generation PRMT5 inhibitors have shown marked improvement in safety and efficacy by selectively targeting MTAP-null tumor cells without impacting normal cells. This review systematically summarizes the biological and functional roles of PRMT5 in MTAP-deficient tumor cells, and comprehensively analyzes the research and development process, molecular binding mechanisms, and the latest advancements in clinical trials of the five second-generation PRMT5 inhibitors currently under investigation, aiming to provide valuable insights for further in-depth studies in this field.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of robot-assisted laparoscopic technology via abdominal approach for patients with primary retroperitoneal tumors. Methods:A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted for the clinical data of 71 patients who underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of primary retroperitoneal tumor via abdominal approach at the Department of Urology of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital,Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January 2015 to December 2023. There were 35 male and 36 female patients. The age ( M(IQR)) was 56(21) years (range: 21 to 83 years). The median tumor diameter was 46 (31) mm (range: 15 to 134 mm). Postoperative pathology revealed 58 benign and 13 malignant cases. Patients were divided into non-adherent group ( n=47) and adherent group ( n=24) based on whether the tumor was adhered to major organs or vessels. Perioperative and postoperative situation were compared between the two groups. Data comparisons were conducted using independent samples t-test for normally distributed continuous variables, Mann-Whitney U tests for non-normally distributed data, χ2 test or Fisher′s exact test for categorical variables. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was employed to estimate 3-year recurrence or metastasis rate and 3-year mortality rate. Results:Operative time was 120(60) minutes (range: 45 to 440 minutes), intraoperative blood loss was 50 (80) ml (range: 10 to 2 000 ml). The median change of intraoperative mean arterial pressure was 40 (19) mmHg(1 mmHg=0.133 kPa)(range: 10 to 112 mmHg). Intraoperative blood transfusion was required in 7 cases, whereas 64 cases did not necessitate transfusion. The change in hemoglobin levels before and after surgery was (17.9±13.6) g/L (range:-16 to 53 g/L), and the median change in serum creatinine levels was 2.0 (14.5) μmol/L (range:-71.0 to 100.4 μmol/L). Postoperative fasting duration was 2.0 (1.5) days (range: 1 to 6 days), and the median hospital stay was 10.0 (7.5) days (range: 4 to 24 days). No perioperative mortality occurred in any of the patients. The non-adherent group had shorter operation time, less estimated blood loss, lower blood transfusion rate, smaller delta value of hemoglobin before and after surgery, larger delta value of creatinine before and after surgery, fewer postoperative complications, shorter postoperative fasting time, and shorter length of hospital stay than the adherent group(all P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in mean arterial pressure fluctuation between the two groups ( P>0.05). Follow-up data were available for 69 patients, with a median follow-up duration of 39 (43) months (range: 4 to 88 months). Among these patients, 40 completed the 3-year follow-up. The 3-year recurrence or metastasis rate was 10.14%, and the 3-year mortality rate was 2.90%. Conclusions:Robot-assisted laparoscopic technology via abdominal approach for resection of primary retroperitoneal tumors is safe and feasible. It can also achieve secure surgical outcome for primary retroperitoneal tumors adherent to surrounding organs or vessels, albeit with increased surgical complexity and slower postoperative recovery compared to non-adherent cases.
