Objective:
To explore the association between takeout fast foods and sugar sweetened beverage consumption with co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among first year junior high school students in Yunnan Province, so as to provide theoretical basis for the prevention of anxiety and depressive symptoms co-occurrence among adolescents.
Methods:
A random cluster sampling involving 8 500 first year junior high school students in 11 counties in Yunnan Province was conducted by a questionnaire survey from October to December 2022. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) was applied to assess anxiety and depressive symptoms in first year junior high school students. Chi-square test was used to compare the anxiety-depression co-occurrence symptoms of first year junior high school students with different demographic characteristics. The association between takeout fast foods and sugar sweetened beverage consumption with co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms of adolescents was analyzed by binary Logistic regression models.
Results:
The detection rate of co-occurrence of anxiety and depression symptoms among first year junior high school students in Yunnan Province was 26.92%. After controlling for demographic variables and other confounders, takeout fast foods and sugar sweetened beverage consumption( OR=1.50, 95%CI =1.27-1.77) was associated with anxiety-depression co-occurrence symptoms among first year junior high school students in Yunnan Province ( P <0.01). Stratified analysis showed that both Han ( OR=1.37, 95%CI =1.07-1.77) and ethnic minorities ( OR=1.60, 95%CI =1.29-2.00) exhibited statistically significant associations between takeout fast foods and sugar sweetened beverage consumption with co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms(both P <0.05).
Conclusions
Takeout fast foods and sugar sweetened beverage consumption increases the risk of co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among first year junior high school students in Yunnan Province. It is recommended to strengthen guidance on the consumption of such products among junior high school students to prevent co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms.

ObjectiveTaking classical herbal pair compatibility research as the entry point, this study aimed to deeply investigate the material basis and compatibility rules underlying the antidepressant effects of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Zhizi Houpotang, and to elucidate its antidepressant mechanism, with a particular focus on its regulation of neuroinflammatory responses mediated by the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)/gasdermin D (GSDMD) signaling pathway and the consequent improvement of neuronal synaptic plasticity. MethodsC57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a blank control group, a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression model group, a Zhizi Houpotang full-formula group (6 g·kg-1·d-1), a Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (MOC)-Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (AFI) herbal pair group (4.2 g·kg-1·d-1), a Gardeniae Fructus (GF)-MOC herbal pair group (4.2 g·kg-1·d-1), a GF-AFI herbal pair group (3.6 g·kg-1·d-1), and a positive drug group (fluoxetine, 12 mg·kg-1·d-1). Depressive-like behaviors in mice were evaluated using behavioral tests. Immunofluorescence staining was used to label and quantify the expression of the microglial marker ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (Ibal) and the purinergic receptor P2X ligand-gated ion channel 7 (P2RX7) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to detect the levels of inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in serum and PFC tissues. Western blot was employed to determine the expression of pannexin 1 (Panx1), P2RX7, NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), Caspase-1, GSDMD, postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95), and the presynaptic protein Synapsin 1 in PFC tissues. Golgi staining was used to assess dendritic spine density of neurons in the PFC. ResultsCompared with the blank control group, the depression model group exhibited significant depressive-like behaviors. In addition, the immunofluorescence areas of Ibal and P2RX7 in the PFC were significantly increased (P<0.01), the levels of IL-1β and IL-18 in serum and the PFC were significantly elevated (P<0.01), and the protein expression levels of Panx1, P2RX7, NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, and GSDMD in the PFC were significantly upregulated (P<0.01). In contrast, the protein expression levels of PSD95 and Synapsin 1 were significantly downregulated (P<0.01), and neuronal dendritic spine density was significantly reduced (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the Zhizi Houpotang full-formula group and the GF-MOC herbal pair group showed significant improvement in all the above indicators (P<0.01). The GF-AFI herbal pair group improved all the above indicators except P2RX7, Caspase-1, GSDMD, and PSD95 (P<0.05, P<0.01). In contrast, the MOC-AFI herbal pair group showed no statistically significant improvement in any of the above indicators compared with the model group. ConclusionZhizi Houpotang and its key herbal pair, GF-MOC, can effectively ameliorate CUMS-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice. Its core antidepressant mechanism may involve inhibition of P2RX7/Panx1 signaling, thereby blocking the NLRP3/GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis pathway and significantly reducing the release of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. Simultaneously, it upregulates the expression of synapse-related proteins PSD95 and Synapsin 1 and increases dendritic spine density, promoting the recovery of synaptic plasticity. These results suggest that GF plays a key role in the antidepressant effects of this formula, and that the compatibility of GF with MOC may represent the principal herbal pair combination responsible for its core therapeutic action.

This paper summarizes Professor WANG Yaoxian's experience in treating diabetic kidney disease (DKD) from the perspective of spleen and stomach based on the "internal heat leading to concretions" theory. It is considered that internal heat leading to concretions constitutes the core pathogenesis of DKD, with the spleen and stomach serving as the source of internal heat; therefore, treatment should be based on regulating the spleen and stomach. In the early stage of DKD, dysfunction of the spleen and stomach leads to the initial generation of internal heat. Common syndrome patterns include gastrointestinal heat accumulation and constrained heat in the liver and stomach, for which modified Gegen Qinlian Decoction (葛根芩连汤) can be used to clear heat bind while modified Dachaihu Decoction (大柴胡汤) is used to clear stomach and soothe liver, respectively. In the middle stage of DKD, weakness of the spleen and stomach results in the initial formation of concretions and conglomerations. Common patterns include spleen deficiency with prevalence of dampness and deficiency of both the spleen and kidney. Treatment emphasizes strengthening the spleen and resolving dampness, raising yang and boosting the stomach with modified Shengyang Yiwei Decoction (升阳益胃汤), or supplementing spleen and boosting kidney, dissipating bind and dispe-ring concretions with modified Shenqi Dihuang Decoction (参芪地黄汤), respectively. In the late stage of DKD, it is characterized by spleen and stomach depletion, and rampant accumulation of turbidity and toxin, and the common syndrome patterns are damp-turbidity obstruction in the middle jiao (焦) and spleen-kidney yang deficiency. Treatment aims to remove turbidity and harmonize the stomach, or to warm the kidney and strengthen the spleen while elimina-ting turbidity, using modified Dahuang Gancao Decoction(大黄甘草汤) and Jupi Zhuru Decoction (橘皮竹茹汤) or modified Baoyuan Decoction (保元汤) and Lizhong Decoction (理中汤), respectively. In clinical practice, appropriate formulas and medications are flexibly selected according to specific syndromes.

BACKGROUND:Psoralen has a strong anti-osteoporotic activity and may have a restorative effect on chemotherapy-induced osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE:To explore the restorative effect of psoralen on the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in mice inhibited by cyclophosphamide and its mechanism. METHODS:C57BL/6 mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were isolated and cultured.Effect of psoralen on viability of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was detected by MTT assay.Osteogenic induction combined with alkaline phosphatase staining was used to determine the optimal dose of psoralen to restore the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells inhibited by cyclophosphamide. The mRNA expression levels of Runx2,alkaline phosphatase,Osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway-related genes Wnt1,Wnt4,Wnt10b,β-catenin,and c-MYC were measured by RT-qPCR at different time points under the intervention with psoralen. The protein expression of osteogenic specific transcription factor Runx2 and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway related genes Active β-catenin,DKK1,c-MYC,and Cyclin D1 was determined by western blot assay at different time points under the intervention with psoralen. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)There was no significant effect of different concentrations of psoralen on the viability of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The best recovery of the inhibition of osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells caused by cyclophosphamide was under the intervention of psoralen at a concentration of 200 μmol/L.(2)Psoralen reversed the reduction in osteogenic differentiation marker genes Runx2,alkaline phosphatase,Osteocalcin and osteoprotegerin mRNA expression and Runx2 protein expression in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells caused by cyclophosphamide conditioned medium.(3)Psoralen reversed the decrease in Wnt/β-catenin pathway-related genes Wnt4,β-catenin,c-MYC mRNA and Active β-catenin,c-MYC,and Cyclin D1 protein expression and the increase in DKK1 protein expression in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells caused by cyclophosphamide conditioned medium.(4)The results showed that cyclophosphamide inhibited osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in mice, and psoralen had a restorative effect on it.The best intervention effect was achieved at a concentration of 200 μmol/L psoralen, and this protective effect might be related to the activation of Wnt4/β-catenin signaling pathway by psoralen.

Objective:
To understand the association between beverage and snack intake and insufficient serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] among primary and secondary school students, so as to provide a scientific basis for targeted intervention measures.
Methods:
From October to December 2021, a stratified random sampling method was used to select 2 477 primary and secondary school students aged 8 to 15 years old from 9 counties in Yunnan Province implemented the Nutrition Improvement Plan for Rural Compulsory Education Students. The intake of beverages and snacks was investigated using the Rural Student Nutrition Monitoring Questionnaire from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The snack intake intensity was calculated and classified into no intake, extremely low, low, medium, and high intensity. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured in the laboratory, and levels <20 ng/mL were defined as insufficient. Chi square tests, LASSO regression, random forest and binary Logistic regression were used to analyze the association between 20 types of beverages and snacks and serum 25(OH)D insufficiency.
Results:
Insufficient serum 25(OH)D was detected in 564 boys (45.9%) and 855 girls (68.5%), with a total of 1 419 cases (57.3%). Binary Logistic regression results showed that extremely low intake intensity of carbonated beverages ( OR =1.51), plant protein beverages ( OR =1.61), and milk tea beverages ( OR =1.39) increased the risk of insufficient serum 25(OH)D, while protective factors were fruits and vegetables ( OR =0.77) and pure milk and yogurt ( OR =0.74) (all P <0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that extremely low intake intensity of carbonated beverages, milk containing beverages, tea beverages, fruit and vegetable juices, and plant protein beverages increased the risk of insufficient serum 25(OH)D in girls ( OR =2.22, 1.72, 1.67, 1.74, 1.92), and high intake intensity increased the risk of insufficient serum 25(OH)D in boys ( OR =1.73, 1.48, 1.52, 1.49, 1.97) (all P <0.05). Extremely low intake intensity of carbonated beverages, plant protein beverages, and milk tea beverages in junior high school students ( OR =1.92, 2.54, 1.68) and low intake intensity in primary school students ( OR =1.40, 1.33, 1.45) increased the risk of insufficient serum 25(OH)D (all P <0.05).
Conclusions
Frequent intake of beverages and highly processed snacks increases the risk of insufficient serum 25(OH)D in primary and secondary school students, while natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, pure milk and yogurt can reduce the risk. Girls and junior high school students are more susceptible to these effects.

Iron overload is strongly associated with heart disease. Ferroptosis is a new form of regulated cell death indicated in cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the specific molecular mechanism of myocardial injury caused by iron overload in the heart is still unclear, and the involvement of ferroptosis in iron overload-induced myocardial injury is not fully understood. In this study, we observed that ferroptosis participated in developing of iron overload and I/R-induced cardiomyopathy. Mechanistically, we discovered that Parkin inhibited iron overload-induced ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes by promoting the ubiquitination of long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 4 (ACSL4), a crucial protein involved in ferroptosis-related lipid metabolism pathways. Additionally, we identified p53 as a transcription factor that transcriptionally suppressed Parkin expression in iron-overloaded cardiomyocytes, thereby regulating iron overload-induced ferroptosis. In animal studies, cardiac-specific Parkin knockout mice (Myh6-CreER T2 /Parkin fl/fl ) fed a high-iron diet presented more severe myocardial damage, and the high iron levels exacerbated myocardial I/R injury. However, the ferroptosis inhibitor Fer-1 significantly suppressed iron overload-induced ferroptosis and myocardial I/R injury. Moreover, Parkin effectively protected against impaired mitochondrial function and prevented iron overload-induced mitochondrial lipid peroxidation. These findings unveil a novel regulatory pathway involving p53-Parkin-ACSL4 in heart disease by inhibiting of ferroptosis.

Interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) is a critical transcription factor that governs the differentiation of cluster of differentiation 4+ (CD4+) T cells. The pathogenesis and progression of psoriasis are primarily attributed to an immune imbalance stemming from the overproduction of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) by T lymphocytes. However, the role of IRF4 in psoriasis remains unexplored. In this study, we found that IRF4 activity is increased in the cutaneous lesions of patients with psoriasis in response to stimulation by IL-23A and IL-1β. This IRF4 elevation heightens its binding to the E1A binding protein p300 (EP300) promoter, triggering the transcription of downstream retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor-γt (RORγt) and increasing the secretion of IL-17A, thereby establishing the IL-1β/IL-23A-IRF4-EP300-RORC-IL-17A inflammatory cascade in psoriasis. The alleviation of imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriatic-like symptoms was achieved through the creation of a Irf4 -/- gene deletion mouse model and pharmacological inhibition using antisense oligonucleotides targeted for Irf4. This amelioration was accompanied by a decreased number of IL-17A-producing CD4+ T cells in the skin. The findings of this study suggest that IRF4 plays a crucial role in the promotion of inflammation and exacerbation of IMQ-induced psoriasiform dermatitis. Consequently, IRF4 targeting could be a promising therapeutic strategy.

Objective:To analyze the relationship between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and the levels of inflammatory factors in peripheral blood and the brain injuries of suppurative meningitis in neonates (NPM) and the value of joint prediction of hydrocephalus.Methods:Ninety-five children with NPM diagnosed and treated in the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College from January 2020 to December 2022 were retrospectively selected, including 31 children with non-cerebral parenchymal injury (group A), accounting for 32.63%(31/95); 36 children with parenchymal injury and no hydrocephalus (group B), accounting for 37.89%(36/95); 28 children with brain parenchymal injury and hydrocephalus (group C), accounting for 29.47%(28/95). The clinical data, peripheral blood levels of NLR, interleukin 6(IL-6), hyper-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) were compared among the three groups, and the influencing factors of hydrocephalus were analyzed by Logistic regression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the value of changes(△, representing the absolute value of the difference between the corresponding indexes and 3 d after admission) in NLR, hs-CRP, IL-6 and PCT in predicting hydrocephalus in NPM alone and combination. Results:The incidence of respiratory failure and convulsion and the levels of NLR, hs-CRP, IL-6 and PCT in the group C were higher than those in the group B and A: 42.86%(12/28) vs. 13.89%(5/36), 6.45%(2/31); 42.86%(12/28) vs. 16.67%(6/36), 3.23%(1/31); 3.91 ± 0.71 vs. 3.12 ± 0.64, 2.16 ± 0.58; (98.21 ± 10.17) mg/L vs. (86.74 ± 9.30), (75.18 ± 8.42) mg/L; (40.73 ± 7.88) ng/L vs. (31.26 ± 6.45), (25.01 ± 5.19) ng/L; (13.26 ± 2.04) ng/L vs (11.83 ± 1.91), (9.45 ± 1.67) ng/L; the levels of NLR, hs-CRP, IL-6 and PCT in the group B were higher than those in the group A, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the levels of peripheral blood NLR and serum hs-CRP, IL-6 and PCT at admission were independent risk factors for hydrocephalus in children with NPM ( P<0.05). The △NLR, △hs-CRP, △IL-6 and △PCT of the children with hydrocephalus were lower than those without hydrocephalus: 0.73 ± 0.24 vs. 1.02 ± 0.31, (42.73 ± 13.08) mg/L vs. (69.56 ± 18.19) mg/L, (13.43 ± 4.22) ng/L vs. (19.86 ± 6.43) ng/L, (4.35 ± 1.34) ng/L vs. (6.58 ± 2.03) ng/L, there were statistical differences ( P<0.05). ROC curve analysis results showed that the AUC of △NLR, △hs-CRP, △IL-6 and △PCT combined to predict hydrocephalus in children with NPM was 0.903, which was greater than each single index ( P<0.05). Conclusions:The levels of NLR, hs-CRP, IL-6 and PCT in peripheral blood of children with NPM are significantly correlated with brain injuries, and have certain predictive efficacy in predicting the risk of hydrocephalus.

Chinese Journal of Comparative Medicine 2025;35(2):139-146
Attention refers to the body's capacity to maintain alert awareness of internal and external stimuli.Attention deficit can impair an individual's learning capacity and working proficiency, resulting in a heavy burden to the family and society.Vagus nerve stimulation(VNS)is an emerging neuro regulatory technique that can achieve reciprocal interaction between the central and peripheral nervous systems, which has demonstrated great potential for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases;however,it has not been used clinically to treat attention-deficient developmental disorders in children or neurodegenerative diseases in the aged population. We briefly review the anatomical and physiological bases of VNS,and its application status and potential use in treating attention deficit diseases.A potential mechanism by which VNS participates in attention-related nervous regulation is proposed,to lay a theoretical foundation for the application of VNS in the field of attention nervous regulation.
