Drugs and pesticide residues in broiler feed can compromise the therapeutic and production benefits of antibiotic (ANT) application and affect gene expression. In this study, we analyzed the expression of 13 key pancreatic genes and blood physiology parameters after administering one maximum residue limit of herbicide glyphosate (GLY), two ANTs, and one anticoccidial drug (AD). A total of 260 Ross 308 broilers aged 1‍-‍40 d were divided into the following four groups of 65 birds each: control group, which was fed the main diet (MD), and three experimental groups, which were fed MD supplemented with GLY, GLY+ANTs (enrofloxacin and colistin methanesulfonate), and GLY+AD (ammonium maduramicin), respectively. The results showed that the addition of GLY, GLY+ANTs, and GLY+AD caused significant changes in the expression of several genes of physiological and economic importance. In particular, genes related to inflammation and apoptosis (interleukin 6 (IL6), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), and caspase 6 (CASP6)) were downregulated by up to 99.1%, and those related to antioxidant protection (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6)) by up to 98.6%, compared to controls. There was also a significant decline in the values of immunological characteristics in the blood serum observed in the experimental groups, and certain changes in gene expression were concordant with changes in the functioning of the pancreas and blood. The changes revealed in gene expression and blood indices in response to GLY, ANTs, and AD provide insights into the possible mechanisms of action of these agents at the molecular level. Specifically, these changes may be indicative of physiological mechanisms to overcome the negative effects of GLY, GLY+ANTs, and GLY+AD in broilers.

We performed a comprehensive literature review of peer-reviewed and non– peer-reviewed literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for contemporary data on prevalence, cost, and projected future costs. Policymakers in the U.S. have long attempted to address the high-cost burden of LBP through limiting low-value services and early imaging. Despite these efforts, costs (~$40 billion; ~$2,000/patient/yr) continue to rise with increasing rates of unindicated imaging, high rates of surgery, and subsequent revision surgery without proper trial of non-pharmacologic measures and no corresponding reduction in LBP prevalence. Globally, the overall prevalence of LBP continues to rise largely secondary to a growing aging population. Cost containment methods should focus on careful and comprehensive clinical assessment of patients to better understand when more resource-intensive interventions are indicated.

Purpose: Gastrointestinal (GI) resection significantly impacts nutritional and physical health, causing stress and inflammation that increase energy needs. Post-operative caloric intake often falls short, disrupting protein homeostasis and compromising muscle health. Nutritional supplementation is crucial to reduce inflammation and maintain muscle health. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a three-week oral nutritional immuno-supplement (IMM) intervention compared to a control (CTL) on post-operative inflammatory status and muscle health in patients receiving limb and chest physiotherapy from June to August 2023. Methods: A randomized, controlled, blinded cohort of 20 patients (ages 30–75) undergoing GI surgery was established. Participants were recruited on the day of surgery and assigned to either the CTL, which received standard protein supplementation, or the IMM group, which received protein immune-enriched supplementation for three weeks. All participants also received chest and limb physiotherapy. Follow-up and data collection were conducted at three postsurgery time points: 3 days, 7 days, and 3 weeks. Assessments included body composition, handgrip strength, basal metabolic rate, 24-hour dietary intake, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Results: Fifteen patients completed the study (IMM=9, CTL=6). After three weeks of supplementation, the IMM group showed a significant increase in lean mass percentage and handgrip strength, along with a significant decrease in CRP levels, compared to the CTL. Conclusion A 3-week oral immuno-supplement provided to patients post-GI resection, in conjunction with limb and chest physiotherapy, is more effective in reducing inflammation and preserving muscle health compared to standard protein supplementation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide the perceptions of nurses, nursing supervisors, and nursing administrators about factors contributing to increased workplace violence (WPV) against nurses within the healthcare settings in Pakistan during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study used a Descriptive Qualitative design, with a purposive sampling technique. From September to December 2021, In-depth interviews of 45 to 60 minutes, using a semistructured interview guide, we collected data from a private and a public healthcare setting in Pakistan. Given the travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, these interviews were conducted online, using Zoom audio features. Bedside nurses, nursing supervisors, and nursing administrators with at least six months of work experience participated in this study. Results: The qualitative data analysis steps suggested by Braun and Clarke (2013) were used for thematic analysis. The overarching theme emerging from the data was “Factors perceived by nurses that contributed to increased WPV in their work settings during the first wave of COVID-19, in a lower middle-income country” The subthemes from the participants' narrations were (a) highly stressed patients, attendants, and healthcare workers; (b) the financial burden on patients and their families; (c) lack of resources and shortage of staff; (d) restricted visiting policy and a weak security system; (e) lack of awareness about the seriousness of COVID-19; (f) misconceptions about COVID-19 vaccines and nurses' role in disseminating awareness. Conclusions The current pandemic increased the intensity of WPV against nurses in healthcare settings in Pakistan. Despite any supposed reasons for WPV, exposure to violence should never be an acceptable part of nursing. The healthcare system in Pakistan needs to pay equal attention to funding, resource provision, and ensuring a safe working environment for healthcare workers.

MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT AND METABOLIC DISORDERS IN PREGNANCY: A LONGITUDINAL STUDY Objective: This study aimed to measure sequential rates of obesity, gestational diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, and anxiety, depression, and antidepressant treatment in pregnant women in Australia between 2008 and 2022. Materials and Methods: BMI ≥ 30 (obesity), BMI ≥ 35 (severe obesity/obesity class II and III), gestational diabetes, Type II diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, clinical diagnoses of anxiety and depression, antidepressant treatment. Results: Women taking antidepressants in pregnancy were substantially more vulnerable to obesity (BMI ≥ 30) with rates of 43.59% vs 26.00%. Women taking antidepressants in pregnancy also had higher rates of severe obesity (BMI ≥ 35) at 25.63% vs 12.98%. A small minority of these women were also nearly 6 times more likely to drink alcohol in pregnancy (2.7% vs 0.47%) and to use other drugs in pregnancy such as amphetamines (0.35% vs 0.07%) and cannabis (3.4% vs 0.73%). When compared with peers matched for diagnoses of depression and anxiety, women taking antidepressants were still more likely to be obese (25.63% vs 20.17%) though this difference was not so marked. Rates of obesity have increased in the cohort studied from 26.86% to 31.27%; of gestational diabetes from 3.98% to 21.77%; of polycystic ovary syndrome from 1.47% to 5.47%; of anxiety from 1.11% to 5.77%; of depression from 2.17% to 4.31%, and antidepressant treatment from 1.45% to 2.16%. Conclusions: Obesity, gestational diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome rates have substantially increased between 2008 and 2022 in Australia. Rates of anxiety in pregnant women have increased substantially over this period, as have rates of depression. Women living with depression and anxiety in pregnancy are increasing to suffer obesity and related metabolic conditions. Antidepressant treatment may also increase these women’s vulnerability to obesity and severe obesity. ASEAN Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 25 (7) July, 2024; 1-10.

PEER-ASSISTED LEARNING APPROACH IN DENTAL CURRICULUM: THE IMPACT ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is a peer tutoring strategy that can benefit dental education, such as enhanced experience and comprehension. The objective of the study is to assess the impact of PAL on student learning and the development of clinical skills and to evaluate the students' perceptions of this learning approach. A quasi-experimental study and online cross-sectional study were conducted from March 2022 to March 2023 to assess three main focuses, which are students' clinical competencies, students' perception towards PAL, and academic performances. This quasi-experimental study involved 82 fourth-year dental students divided into two groups to observe either orthodontic impression-taking (group A) or facebow transfer (group B) procedures for six months, followed by assessments of their clinical competencies of both procedures. Pre-seminar and post-seminar tests were done to evaluate the academic performance of fourth-year dental students. A validated questionnaire was used to assess the perceptions of 190 students from year 3 to year 5. There was no significant difference in clinical performance between groups following PAL sessions. There were weak correlations between groups A (p=0.538) and B (p=0.279), indicating a weak relationship between PAL and students’ clinical competencies. However, PAL helps to improve theoretical knowledge, which showed an increase in average scores in the pre-test and post-test. Moreover, the questionnaire responses reported positive perceptions of the PAL approach. The study found no significant correlation between PAL and students’ clinical performances. However, student feedback showed this approach to be beneficial in enhancing the clinical exposure of dental students and should be implemented in dental schools.
